NJ Transit's 40th Anniversary Express rolls to an unexpected stop on the six-track section of the Northeast Corridor in Linden. A mechanical issue caused only a brief delay but allowed gathered photographers to take as many photos as they wanted. The next stop will be South Amboy where the historic "engine change" from electric traction to diesel occurred in years past. NJT's remaining active pair of F40PHs would take over from there to Bay Head. The train is led by two NJT heritage units, one PRR and the other represents a scheme applied to NJ Transit E60s and ALP-44s in the 1980s-90s.

Here's hoping lots of things get better in 2021.................

Good Luck all

autumn has finally come bringing colors and pumpkins and lots of fun

soon it will be a time for joyful celebrations across all the nations

the great divides of oceans and lands

made smaller by people reaching hands

bring the small up with the tall

make the tall stoop low to help us all.

fairy tales of santa and elves

can hopefully empty the shelves

of toys for girls and boys

one thing for sure with Covid near

the fear

the pushy

the demanding pleas

will be silenced for a while

the trial

of Truth always wins

it's about Love above all

not the small

human men

but the heavenly amen

of angels on high.

It’s been far too long since I’ve posted so it’s about time I start sharing again.

Toothed belts /timing belts are available in different sizes even in loops (which sometimes can be of corrrect length for tinkering).

This morning we have 60 knts nortwest wind. Heavy swell and waves like this, jumping over the Mouro Island, covering its lighthouse.

Another session of water drop shots, this time experimenting with 3 drops, which I found to be very tricky. Getting the timing just right so that the third drop hits short enough after the second AND before the whole thing collapses is, well...yeah, I think you get the idea. By using my phone to record in 240 fps I managed to get a rough idea of the timing but still, the tolerances are miniscule, so getting it right is not easy. I managed to get a few shots where you can actually see the third drop creating an effect, but not exactly what I was aiming/hoping for. Drop size, timing between them and the delay before the camera fires are all factor that influence the result and I still haven't quite understood the relationship between them. I use the Mirror Up function in the camera to avoid having to deal with shutter lag as well.

I used milk for opacity control and I went crazy and added many different food colours to the mix as well as yellow colour in the drop. No thickening yet; I still don't have the strength for that!

I used 2 Godox speedlights off-camera on 1/32 power. One had a red gel mounted and illuminated the background and another, with a softbox mounted, illuminated the drop. The background was simply semi-transparent plastic binders in front of a white background. ISO 100, 1/200 or 1/250 shutter speed and varying f-stops.

Focus was achieved by standing a pen attached to a bunch of Blu Tac in the bowl so it was completely stable. With the camera switched off I fired the MIOPS Splash to see where the drop landed and then positioned the pen accordingly, with the drop landing slightly off-center towards the side facing the camera. Then I focused on the pen using autofocus to get perfect focus. I use back button focus so the camera doesn't try to focus with each shot :)

"Disclaimer": I totally forgot to clean the filter (good thing that was on so it didn't get to the lens) and background regularly so there might be some slight spots here and there. Sorry about that! :D

Again, please get in contact with me if you have any advise and/or experience you'd like to share. I am aiming for shots with 3 drops, crisp sharpness overall and even a soap bubble bursting. Maybe even the liquid going through the top of that from the bowl below. Perhaps in a year or so? Heh!

In the next drop-session I might use some opaque liquid in the bowl below and hopefully get a "plastic'y"/CGI look. I might also vary the camera angle and lighting to get some reflections and/or shadows as well BUT! Next photo shoot will NOT be drop related. ---> Need. To. Do. Something. Else. Next! <---

Good time at the fundraiser at Lagunitas Brewery. Cool place, but you can only take so much of the soundtrack from Willy Wonka before you say "peace out". Thanks to Holly - dear friend and she never has a problem when I say "I need to get a picture!"

A rural country light that caught my eye because of the contrasting colours... this is straight from the camera!

Shot this at the right time.

I gave the skirt a little flip just as the timer timed out. Cool...

Jackie and Carlos came together by good timing. Carlos is a Grand Canyon hiking community rescue in the canyon favorite. Maybe these 2. Models came in separately but I just had to get them ttogether.

Apps used

Sketchbook-my go to app to assemble, work or paint things, also has 16 blending effects, a very good scanner, and other enhancers.

PhotoWizard: Interesting to use effects (and such a delicate plaster effect) the background line work utilizes this. First the clouds were softened both color and texture with Seaweed/Formulas. Photowizard used to have an HD iPad version but they chose not to upgrade it. For the man in the far back I used Graffiti Me, always fun to add a noir look.

The church hosts also a marking in the form of a meridian line inlaid in the paving of the left aisle in 1655; it was calculated and designed by the astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini, who was teaching astronomy at the University. A meridian line does not indicate the time: instead, with its length of 66.8 metres (219 ft) it is one of the largest astronomical instruments in the world, allowing measurements that were for the time uniquely precise. The sun light, entering through a 27.07 mm (1.066 in) hole placed at a 27.07 m (88.8 ft) height in the church wall, projects an elliptical image of the sun, which at local noon falls exactly on the meridian line and every day is different as to position and size. The position of the projected image along the line allows to determine accurately the daily altitude of the sun at noon, from which Cassini was able to calculate with unprecedented precision astronomical parameters such as the obliquity of the ecliptic, the duration of the tropical year and the timing of equinoxes and solstices. On the other hand, the size of the projected sun's image, and in particular its rate of variation during the year, allowed Cassini the first experimental verification of Kepler's laws of planetary motion.

Cassini and Domenico Guglielmini published an illustrated account of how the meridian line was accomplished in 1695.

If alternative/historic photographic processes need patience, so does water drop photography...

Better than before calibrating with HPR, but still haven't found that "oomph" contrast with salt prints. To be continued. :-)

The timing for this was almost perfect, but these two actually crossed about a minute apart on the evening of Monday 31st March. GBRf's 66733 'Cambridge PSB' plods along the branch from MoD Kineton with 4C01, 19:21 Kineton - Carlisle Yard. By the time DB's 66148 'Maritime Intermodal Seven' flashed across the gap with 4E68 Southampton - Wakefield, the final wagons of the military train were disappearing around the corner into Fenny Compton.

The slow branch speed and long vista means a 'real' shot of 2 trains crossing like this isn't impossible. I'll keep trying, and hopefully won't have to rely on Photoshop next time!

I surprised myself with this one! I was trying to sneak up on a Bald Eagle through the crunchy snow. No easy task. He heard me coming and leapt from his perch. I followed him through the trees and snapped quick when I saw an opening. I really thought I missed the shot but lo and behold I got it! LOL! Pretty fast for an old guy!

We were headed home when we noticed this WBD U-NSDTND4-19A got the signal at Western Avenue as we passed by the land of the Burlingtons on the tollway. A short wait later and we lens him framed between bare trees just east of Western Springs, IL. Gotta love the "Conrail Heritage" that was riding second out!
