Very tough to capture the austere grandeur of mountain scenery on cam they always seem smaller than in person. I think I managed it here.....or maybe not :)
Another shot from the Prescott Hill Climb, i had great fun trying to time the shots to catch the drivers illuminated in the dappled light. A lot of binned images to get the odd few that I liked

I originally scouted this location back in November 2020. Although I didn't get the good conditions or the timing wasn't right for Milky Way season. I for sure marked this spot to revisit one day with better conditions.
I'm a sucker for pointy rocks and balanced compositions, I'm pretty sure this is very relevant for those items. And thankfully on my return visit to the Hills we were presented with some decent cloud formations.
I decided to go with a blue hour panorama because the light on the clouds weren't the best and if you're starting to notice I do like the color blue.

Former Santa Fe GP39-2 2846 leads the L-CHI105 west through Coal City, IL. Good timing here, as about ten minutes later a major downpour rolled in.
It was perfect timing when the sun came out from behind the clouds, the breeze dropped and I was able to capture this shot of two leaves being lit up by the light. Also pretty good Timing that Flickr fixed whatever bug it had so that I could upload in time to make Flickr Friday! :)
While I was stuck in a cubicle for most of the day, the Iowa Pacific tooled around the Elgin Subdivision joyriding. Once freed from my corporate shackles, I returned home just as the Iowa Pacific was blasting off for Elgin again.
I casually stepped out onto the deck and nabbed a nice pan shot. Happy times at CP Mastadon.
I think getting one of the small birds in flight, in focus is all in the timing... and just plain luck of shutter control. In other words, it's flippin' hard! This is only the second time I've done it and I tried often in the last several winters.

Post sunrise at Cathedral Cove, in the Coromandel region of New Zealand. A beautiful location that was fun to shoot before the crowds arrived. :)

I always take a quick peek on the little screen after taking a picture...
And I didn't see the expression on their face at that moment....
But when I came home and see the shots on my pc, I was laughing out loud!
My doggies make me smile all the time...wooohooo!

Right place, wrong time...
Being in the right place at the right time is key to a great photo, regardless of the subject matter. In many cases it is just pure luck.
Lady Luck and I play games every day I depart Chicago. She seems to work against me more often than not, but once in a while gives in and allows a nice shot.
On my assigned train home, there are two times that can be pivotal for a potential photograph at the former Grand Junction. One involves an over/under possibility, while the other is a side by side which will be discussed later in "Grand Timing Again."
If things go as planned, our train is doubled up and air tested after 2pm. An outbound Metra electric passes under our mainline every day at 2:20pm.
Keep in mind, all of the tumblers have to fall in place. Just one problem, like issues with the power or problems doubling up, and any photo op is gone. And we are talking about railroading here!
On this day, Lady Luck was on my side. Perfect skies, an on time Metra, and the dispatcher holding us for a westbound all made this picture a reality.
It truly was Grand Timing!
Timing is everything, for the Egret to catch its meal and for the photographer to capture the moment, all in a split second.

As the saying goes timing is everything. As I watched this show develop I was hoping for a train before all the color disappeared. Fortunately it all worked as a short train appeared at the right moment.
I had no plans to stop in Sharples after a day of shooting in east Central Alberta, but it looked like the sun might be in my favor as I approached the Sharples turnoff. I got there just int time to take advantage of this.
CN L516 is two miles into its journey to Stevens Point from Withrow at milepost 429 of the CN Minneapolis Subdivision. A late season thunderstorm roared over Washington County here at Arcola in May Township while the L516 was getting its track warrant to head east. Just as the storm was letting up yet still raining in sheets, L516's headlight appeared. I can't describe the sky in this moment other than strange. It was shades of orange and pink, honestly not looking that real.

I went to the lake last week to try to catch some rising mist. I wasn't sure where to get the best views. Stopped at this spot and 5 minutes later the mist was all gone and the sun warmed up the view (image below)
This photo was taken two minutes after the last one I posted. This illustrates how quickly the light changes at sunrise and how sometimes you only have a matter of seconds to capture the shot you are after. Like they say, "timing is everything."
