This idea popped into my head yesterday and this morning I set out to experiment and play with it. I was so excited how the smoke was acting around the egg I wanted to race back here and show you all the very first one I took :D Off I go!

Being the European Capitol of Culture is a big deal for the small city that gets the nod. All sorts of visual and performance events, lots of tourist money. But well, 2020, you know. Hard to recoup an investment.

This back lit towering cumulus cloud displayed nice iridescence, shadow cast on to higher clouds, and a bird of prey (although it might just be a raven).

The lilac breasted roller has been a long time favorite of mine and one never tires of their incredible beauty. Some years we did not see many but the past two years in Etosha we have been fortunate to see numerous rollers in varying parts of the area. Needless to say it is always a thrill. They are small but packed with dynamite color and they leave you feeling well just awesome.

A southbound work train slips through Waxhaw, NC on their way south to Catawba, SC during the golden hours of sunlight. As far as shooting southbounds in Waxhaw goes, this is about the best lighting you can get - golden sunlight straight down the tracks.
It looks like this young Cuckoo has at last left the family of reed Warblers ( Host parents ) in peace and I believe has left on his long journey to spend the winter in central Africa I last saw him around August 14th. I have watched him on the ground feeding perfectly well on his own and not calling for food . I hope you have enjoyed seeing the progress of this young bird through my lens it has been a wonderful thing to see for me and at times I have been amazed that the little Reed Warblers survived the ordeal , some of the images have not been shown in chronological order but the basic timing has been as posted .
The timing of this one had to be perfect and after almost two years in the planning this is the shot I've had in my head since the last time we visited Arches National Park.
We headed up this short but strenuous hike during the heat of the afternoon sun. When we arrived, there were a good couple of hundred people all waiting for the sunset as this is one of the most iconic sights in the whole park.
Some just sitting and watching and some frantically running around trying to get the best spot for a photo. There was one group of Japanese guys who just couldn't make their mind up and were backwards and forwards with all their gear pretty much non stop. Inevitably the outcome of all this faffing around was that one guy, who obviously hadn't attached his camera to his tripod properly the previous time he moved all his gear, managed to drop his camera a good 150 feet down a steep rock face directly in front of us, it made an awful sound as it tumbled towards its death in the bushes below. The ironic thing about it was that his whole camera body and lens were covered in a camouflage housing meaning that he couldn't find it when he went down to retrieve it!
After sunset most people started to head off back down while we took up our pre-determined position carefully calculated using the photopills app many weeks beforehand.
We knew we then had to wait until 10pm when the moon had just dipped below the horizon and the Milky way had appeared directly above the Arch.
Lots of people were shining lights at the arch taking their own shots while we sat patiently waiting.
Just before 10pm there was just 3 of us left so I set up my manfrotto lights on their lowest setting, one about 150 feet away to the right and one about 60 feet to the left, both with 1/2 CTO filters.
And there it was, the shot I'd had in my head for nearly two years came to life on the back of the camera.
This is a six shot vertical panorama of the stunning Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, Moab. My spiritual home!

I think I must photograph this building at least once per trip we make to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This time, I heard a Harley coming and just snapped the photo as soon as they were in frame.
I've always liked motorcycles and grew up thinking Harley's were cool. I'm more into adventure bikes, now. At least the Harley crowd this weekend were mostly cool. There was one exception, though. A dude cruising around town on his Street Glide with music cranked up so loud it was literally painful. Sorry man, you're not cool and no one likes your butt country music.

Taken at Chester Zoo on the 22nd Nov 2023. I have taken many photographs but never managed to get the teeth showing. I was really pleased with the composition, tone and mood of this one.
Really most of the time it is sheer luck! I had just pressed the shutter release when the train appeared. I didn't even hear it coming. I then spent the next few seconds praying that the shutter didn't close too early on my exposure. I would love to say that it was timed perfectly with the meteor but no, the train arrived about 10 minutes before the sky exposure. Its not often i do this but i just thought the blended re-edit summed up the enjoyment of the night all in one.

"Macro Mondays".. "Chain". This chain & sprocket are unused and date back to the 1960s. I had to open two BMC "British Motor Corporation" parts packets to photograph these items. The oily appearance is the original anti-corrosion preservative.

The timing on this one was completely by accident, and I take absolutely no credit for trying to get the birds to line up like that. They are not photoshopped in, and were actually captured in those positions. I only noticed when I went through my images after the fact.
Lake Erie can indeed be very dramatic with the right conditions!
