We spent another magnificent afternoon at Pataphysical Studios this Saturday, making art together … and playing at the edges of time.

Our visitors this week were Jim Neidhardt (now Dr. Neidhardt) and his lovely wife Denise (Dr. Now?), longtime friends of Drs. Rindbrain, Skidz and the Queen of the Desert. • Dr. Igor and Heatshrink both gave Dr. Figurine nice gifts for her birthday

• Dr. Canard created a colorful zen map, inviting other doctors to art it up

Here are this week’s notable art projects:

• Drs. Really and Rindbrain created a banner for an art protest, ‘Traffic Jam Valley’

• Dr. Rindbrain developed ‘Magical Thought’, an illuminated wonderbox

• Dr. Fiske dropped by to record an impromptu video of Pataphysical Studios

• Dr. Figurine showed off the head and body of her Owl for our Dada Exhibit

• Dr. Fabio presented composite sketches for the Time Machine, based on team designs

• Dr. Truly demonstrated how to share videos on social media while lying flat on your back

• Dr. Canard discussed her Dada Mobile with Dr. Zboon, who then created a greeting card

• Dr. Fabio showed off a new circle design for the Crazy Clock, discarding its old frame

We then went on a nice walk to Oakwood Valley. On the way, Dr. Rindbrain re-discovered himself and nearby dimensions on a neighborhood pole. We then played in a secret grove of bay trees, deep in the heart of the valley.

We’re building a Time Machine with crazy clocks and other whimsical art pieces at Pataphysical Studios. On a quiet Saturday afternoon, Drs. Canard, Figurine and Fabio reported for duty.

Drs. Canard and Fabio are creating a Crazy Clock together. This interactive artwork features a collection of ancient clocks. When you press the green button, all three clocks will spin out of control with surreal sound effects, followed by a musical quote about time (e.g.: “Time is on my side’). This week, Dr. Canard figured out how to arrange old watches all around the main clock; Dr. Fabio picked and edited musical quotes for the first prototype.

We inspected the space around the Time Machine in its new location and brainstormed ideas for where its different parts might go. Dr. Fabio revised the exhibit layout to reflect actual dimensions and added new designs, for discussion purposes. Drs. Figurine also suggested we feature a few 'time wonderboxes' on the side walls, which would be scenes from our past, present or future.

We spent the rest of the afternoon working on making Magic Mushrooms that will glow in the dark and set the mood for Violet’s Journey and other art projects.

This week, we worked on our Time Machine and our new Dada exhibit:

• Dr. Canard made a birthday card for Dr. Pozar (a.k.a. Heatshrink)

• Dr. Figurine soldered more electronic parts for her theramine

• Drs. Fabio and Zboon experimented with Time Machine controls and seating

• Drs. Rindbrain and Igor discussed the roof and structure of the Time Machine

• Dr. Really presented the latest plans for the Dada exhibit, dressed as a Renaissance man

• We all discussed what Dada means to us in the 21st century

• Dr. Tout d’Suite reviewed Dr. Figurine’s picture book about Dada with Dr. Canard

• Drs. Fabio and Canard discussed adding quotes about time to their Crazy Clock

• Dr. Canard played with ‘Pataphysical Talismans of different sizes, laser cut by Dr. Fabio

To quote artist Man Ray, “Dada is a state of mind”. That state of mind was very much alive at the Pataphysical Studios this week.

I was getting 'Stranger Things' vibes from the Time Machine ride at the Oklahoma State Fair.

A fearless crew of ‘pataphysical doctors went on an art expedition to Treasure Island, looking for hidden gems and inspiration. This call to adventure came from Drs. Canard and Figurine, and we were joined by Drs. Heatshrink, Really and Truly.

We started by scouring this quaint flea market, where we found many worthy artifacts for our Time Machine and other art projects. We then headed over to Building 180, where some of Burning Man’s most treasured artworks were created. There, we met with artist Peter Hudson, who showed us Eternal Return, his latest stroboscopic zoetrope, which is an amazing work of art and science.

We also got a chance to view some other legendary artworks in this building, before it closes down at the end of the month, including Marco Cochrane’s original models for Bliss Dance and his large-scale steel sculptures of nude women.

It was an inspiring visit, and I enjoyed visiting this mecca of Burning Man art -- and meeting Peter, whom I had heard so much about. And it was great fun to go on this little expedition with my maker friends, to collect art debris and inspiration for our next creations!

The good doctors at Pataphysical Studios gathered for a viewing party at Dr. Pozar’s home to watch clips of movies about time travel.

We had a fine potluck dinner and viewed a dozen time travel scenes together, from a wide variety of films: George Pal’s classic Time Machine, La Jetée, Jubilee, Waybac Machine, Back to the Future, Dr. Who and more.

These cultural references can inspire our work on the Time Machine we are starting to build. Many thanks to Tim and Sue for hosting this fun and educational party!

i love it when i come across these old glass negatives. this one i bought at the flea market today, with a whole box of them. looking at them makes you travel back in time so this is for this week's theme time machine (19/52).

My thanks to Scott for the tip about the Time Machine feature in PaintShop.. I took one of my old evening shots that was in the little video and used that particular filter as a base and then used the Nik Software filters to complete it... I really love the effect that it gave me so Thanks again Scott !!!!

My friend Jean Bolte (a.k.a. Dr. Figurine) would like to bring characters to life by projecting videos of human faces onto her ‘life casts’ of David Bowie, Sean Connery and John Cleese.

On a quiet sunday afternoon, we gathered in my studio to experiment with this idea, with the help of our friend Mark Petrakis (a.k.a. Dr. Zboon). For our first test, we used a video of my interview with Jean’s daughter Natalina (a.k.a. Dr. Canard), and projected it onto the David Bowie and Sean Connery life casts, as well as on a plain mannequin head. We also shot original video footage of Mark and projected it on the same life casts, along with some facial expressions.

The results of this first test were very encouraging, as you can see in these photos:

We would like to apply this projection mapping technique to our Time Machine art project. One idea is to project the faces of historical figures onto these ‘life casts.’ They could be set in a dark box behind of the Time Machine’s porthole. Opening the porthole would reveal an animated face from the past, which would speak to you for a moment, across time and space. We could even add an old phone in front of that box, which would ring when a new historical figure is ready to talk.

If this experiment goes well, we may also feature one of these characters in our Dada Exhibit this fall, as part of the puppet show and Magic Theater project we are working on separately.

Here are some of our observations:

• this technique works well to bring characters to life

• it creates the illusion that you are seeing a real person

• aligning the faces from the videos with the life casts can be tricky

• we may need to hold the actor’s heads to keep them aligned while we shoot

• getting the eyes, nose and mouth to match may require adjusting the video as well

• some interesting expressions come out when the faces are not perfectly aligned

• people can be made to look older or younger, depending which cast you use

• when the face looks straight at the camera, you really feel that it is talking to you

• some facial expressions work really well, like shifting eyes left and right

• some interesting effects can be created by speeding up the footage, as in Max Headroom

In our next experiments, we will play with different ways to align the projected image and the life cast, and make it all work in a small space. We will also face a trade-off between realism and diversity: we could focus on just a single character to perfect the alignment for that figure; or we could aim to project a range of different characters against a more generic life cast where the alignment might be less precise.

I can’t wait for our next experiments with this promising direction.

Pataphysical Studios, our art collective, is starting to build a Time Machine for our next exhibit. This week, our maker friend Geo Monley joined us to consult on our construction plans. While he was at it, he also led our motley crew to raise the structure up from the floor and build a doorway into our inner sanctum. It was a productive team effort and we got a lot done, thanks to Dr. Geo’s wonderful guidance.

This week, we also worked on other art projects:

• Dr. Canard started a new assemblage project with assorted art objects and voodoo dolls

• Drs. Fabio and Canard finalized the design of their Crazy Clock and brainstormed time quotes

• Dr. Figurine finished soldering her theramine and showed off her David Bowie life cast

• Dr. Rindbrain provided sundry tools and supplies to support all this fine work

• Dr. Really worked on our proposal for the Dada exhibit

• Dr. Heatshrink did extensive documentation on this photo set

Next, Drs. Fabio and Rindbrain will prepare more detailed sketches of the Time Machine, to reflect the new reality in the studio. These visualizations will inform our next group discussion, so that team members can get a better understanding of where their work might fit in the exhibit.

Spring is back at Pataphysical Studios, where we spent another lovely Saturday afternoon, making art together and exploring new dimensions across space and time.

This week, we developed our Time Machine and started work on our new Dada exhibit:

• Dr. Rindbrain showed a new mockup for the Time Machine viewing frame

• Dr. Max and his family came to experience the magic of the art garden

• Dr. Canard posed by the pataphysical flag and sanded her music box

• Dr. Phylora picked up her new pataphysical badge and caught up with the group

• Dr. Truly brought blank canvases and art ideas for the new Dada exhibit she is producing

• Dr. Tout d’Suite picked the Alfred Jarry canvas as her art project for the Dada exhibit

• Dr. Fabio picked the Gidouille canvas and worked on the Crazy Clock prototype

• Dr. Canard picked the Eye/Hand canvas as her art project for the Dada exhibit

• Dr. Figurine picked the Apostrophe canvas and worked on her theramine

• Dr. Skidz picked the Ubu canvas and pitched a duck phone for the Dada exhibit

• The Queen of the Desert shared her research on Dada and time travel

• Drs. Rindbrain, Really and Igor installed the back wall for the Time Machine

• Dr. Fabio showed Dr. Canard how to shoot a video interview with Dr. Rindbrain

• Drs. Zboon, Fabio and Figurine discussed a puppet show for the Dada Exhibit

Making art with friends brings new light into our lives and brightens the world around us.

The good doctors at Pataphysical Studios gathered for a viewing party at Dr. Pozar’s home to watch clips of movies about time travel.

We had a fine potluck dinner and viewed a dozen time travel scenes together, from a wide variety of films: George Pal’s classic Time Machine, La Jetée, Jubilee, Waybac Machine, Back to the Future, Dr. Who and more.

These cultural references can inspire our work on the Time Machine we are starting to build. Many thanks to Tim and Sue for hosting this fun and educational party!

Each Saturday, the good doctors make art together at Pataphysical Studios.

Here are this week’s notable art projects:

• Drs. Really and Rindbrain created a banner for an art protest, ‘Traffic Jam Valley’

• Dr. Rindbrain developed ‘Magical Thought’, an illuminated wonderbox

• Dr. Fiske dropped by to record an impromptu video of Pataphysical Studios

• Dr. Figurine showed off the head and body of her Owl for our Dada Exhibit

• Dr. Fabio presented composite sketches for the Time Machine, based on team designs

• Dr. Truly demonstrated how to share videos on social media while lying flat on your back

• Dr. Canard discussed her Dada Mobile with Dr. Zboon, who then created a greeting card

• Dr. Fabio showed off a new circle design for the Crazy Clock, discarding its old frame

We then went on a nice walk to Oakwood Valley. On the way, Dr. Rindbrain re-discovered himself and nearby dimensions on a neighborhood pole. We then played in a secret grove of bay trees, deep in the heart of the valley.

Lumberman's Monument is dedicated to the workers of the early logging industry in Michigan. It was built in 1931, dedicated in 1932 and is managed by the USDA Forest Service. It is located in the northeastern part of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan along the Au Sable River within Huron-Manistee National Forests. Access to the park is on River Road, which intersects M-65 west of Tawas City, Michigan. Monument Road, from East Tawas, also leads directly to the monument. The monument is part of the River Road Scenic Byway, a 22-mile (35 km) drive between Oscoda and South Branch that runs parallel with the beautiful Au Sable River. It is a designated National Scenic Byway
