It may not be able to travel forward or backwards in time. But it does go 88 miles per decade! :P

Ten years ago today, I uploaded my first MOC.

After weeks of sorting and cleaning my old LEGO collection, after countless hours of getting to know to the new parts that had emerged during my dark ages, after days of trying and failing to build something that looked remotely like the Time Machine from the 2002 movie, after finally being satisfied with the result, after my first timid Bricklink order, after dozens of photos and after I comprehended the complicated process of dealing with MOCpages , yes, after all that, I uploaded my first MOC and … nothing happened.

For 2 whole days.

Then, oh glory, I received my first comment (thank you so much, McVitie 15). Somebody actually had a look at my MOC and even wrote something (I’ve only read the book, but this is the sort of thing I’d imagine it to look like.)

It took the whole, hot summer of 2010, a lot of stamina and willpower, to keep building. I dreamed of huge MOCs that I was going to build, of how to be blogged one day by the almighty The Brothers Brick and of how to be noticed by the great ones, like Nannan Zhang , Mark Kelso or Mark Stafford .

Please don’t be mad at me for not naming more or even all of them, because there are far, far too many people in this fantastic community that motivated and inspired me, that I met online and in real life, and some of them became good friends over the decade.

Thanks so much to all of you. I don’t know where I’d be today without you and this incredible hobby.

To give something back to the community, I created instructions for the little vignette that I uploaded for the ‘Hobbit Day’.

You can download them for free HERE (ca. 10 MB)

Have fun with them and be creative.

And thanks to everybody for 10 amazing years.

That's just the top-level. Digging a little deeper, it operates through a series of hypermodal undulative quantum matricies. Any locambulatory feedback is re-routed through the primary polycyclic encaptolography circuit, effectively eliminating nearly all perceived phase eddies.

The rest of the internals are proprietary at this point in time. More updates later...

“Do you like living in a big city?” he asks with a slightly disgusted look on his face. “Of course!” she chimes, looking around at the massive buildings, throngs of people littering the narrow sidewalks, and the business on the streets.

He lets out a deep breath, looks first down at his plain shoes then turns his head slightly and stares sideways at her for a bit. “Why?” he finally asks, wrinkling his nose a little.

“Why not?!” she boasts. Not skipping a beat she continues, “Public transportation in this city is one of the best in the world. Every time you round a corner you never know what you’re going to see. If you want to attend a play, you’re not limited to what the local community theater or high school is putting on. Ballets, operas, musical performances!” She throws her arms excitedly into the air as her voice grows. “And just think about how many performers and shows visit this city each year. You have so many choices. This place is exploding with stimulation!”

You’re going to explode…” he muses in a sarcastic tone.

She reaches out and pokes him in his side playfully.

His shoulders start to heave as he shakes his head and chuckles, “How much do they pay you to rattle off that garbage anyway?”

She pokes his side again, this time a little harder. “Let’s get a cab, it’s freezing out here.”

“That’s the smartest thing I’ve heard all day!” He says. Now she’s the one shaking her head.

“But let me move about five feet back from the road. They’ll stop if they see a pretty girl hailing a cab in the cold. When they see me they lay on the gas."

“Fine.” She says as he shuffles back towards the alley.

She stands near the corner with her arm outstretched, dancing a little: Alternating the distribution of her body weight from one foot to the other, hoping the movement might help to keep her warm.

“Hey!” He yells over the noise of the city.

“What?” She yells back. When there is no reply she finally turns to look at him. His neck is craned and he’s scanning the area. “What?” She yells again, whipping her head back towards the road.

“I need a time machine.” He says, quite plainly.

She’s cold standing in the wind, and not amused. “What for?” She yells back, still searching traffic for a cabby with a light on.

“So I can go back 20 years and invest in concrete.”

“Concrete?!” She replies, perplexed.

“Yes, look around you! This city is one big slab of it, interrupted by a few million pieces of steel and glass. I’d be a rich man by now.”

She rolls her eyes then smiles as she spots a taxi slowing down.

She grabs the handle and pops the door open before motioning to him to join her.

“See, what did I tell you? My plan is a well-oiled machine.” He boasts with a hint of ego.

She gives the driver directions and the vehicle speeds off. The car navigates through heavy evening traffic, it’s passengers lunge back and forth as the driver practices his erratic skills. She clutches onto the door arm to steady herself.

“Here’s another investment opportunity, and I don’t even need a time machine for it.” He whispers and shoots her a mischievous grin.

“What?” She replies coyly.

He leans in closer to her and says, in a hushed voice, “Brake pads.”

We spent another magnificent afternoon at Pataphysical Studios this Saturday, making art together … and playing at the edges of time.

Our visitors this week were Jim Neidhardt (now Dr. Neidhardt) and his lovely wife Denise (Dr. Now?), longtime friends of Drs. Rindbrain, Skidz and the Queen of the Desert. Jim showed us the ‘hypno-disks’ he is working on to create experiences like this surreal Duchamp film, Anemic Cinema: youtu.be/AsnhBUp7xxM?t=24s

We had a great conversation and I knew they were like-minded folks when Dr. Neidhardt and I both exclaimed at the same time the same exact phrase: “Life IS Change!”. Jim is interested in contributing to our madcap art adventure, so stay tuned. Learn more about his work at: neidhardtstudio.com/

Throughout the day, we brainstormed more ideas for our new Time Machine, while working on sundry maker art projects:

• Dr. Rindbrain and Canard put the finishing touches on their music box

• Drs. Figurine and Heatshrink prepared to assemble a theremin together

• Dr. Fabio drew a first sketch of what a time controller might look like

• Dr. Igor and Heatshrink both gave Dr. Figurine nice gifts for her birthday

• Dr. Tout de Suite considered lighting up her goggles, chose to paint instead

• Dr. Zboon discussed time travel and made a birthday card for his friend Ernesto

• Dr. Canard created a colorful zen map, inviting other doctors to art it up

• Dr. Rindbrain added more rainbow-colored lights to the Time Machine framework

It was great to stretch out to the edges of time and back again in the company of my friends.

Fire in the hole!

Wasn't thrilled with the last pic, so I got out the lightbox.

Rebuilt the rear section of my six stud wide DeLorean this weekend. The big change was I got rid of the wedges I was using on the sides and added bars in a sloping angle to try and replicate the rear/side window frames. Also added exhaust pipes, some dark gray framing around the tail lights and reshaped the glowing pieces.
