or... how the Rani (left, in red) was charmed by Bill Potts' (right, with cyberheart) girlfriend Sam (middle, in the labcoat), who is the first human she thinks makes any sense at all.
they share their science obsessions and Bill (who is just getting started with xenobiology) only listens for now, trying to understand as much as she can.
Volumious Hair theme for A-Z group...
Sam doesn't have the hairstyle for the theme, but she's central to the story of how the Rani decided to be a reasonable person.

The whole family love Doctor Who, saw it was a nice starry night so venture out in to the garden with my son's Tardis and Matt Smith toy and trailed it for an hour.
Quite happy with the results, and looking forward to the new series of Doctor Who :)

Romana was President for the first part of the Time War, before Rassilon was reincarnated and took over. The outfit however was based on the 4th doctor story, ‘the Deadly Assassin’.
Tried to cook up something to resemble what Jodie Whittaker was wearing in the introductory pics - still working on finding the hood www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Jodie-Whittaker-...
Rules are made to be broken, something someone said to me once. Best advice ever, it has allowed me to visit old haunts and mysteries of the past.
Just a quick shot without a lot of post production. Much more natural in my opinion and the angle is better.
Drax is a lesser known timelord character, appearing in a couple of episodes of the final 'Key to Time' story. He's less a renegade than a drop-out, spending his time touring the galaxy, indulging in petty crime and making a living as a hired engineer.
I wanted a very old-school/default design for his console room, taking a cue from both GunnBuilding and Sam K Bricks in designing the central console. For a bit of variety, I went with a spherical time-rotor - and dropped the kinetic sculpture aspect. This one does have opening doors though!
I'm a big fan of Doctor Who, and now that I finally finished my individual drawings of the eleven Doctors, I thought I'd combine them all into one image. One incredibly wide image.
I've only seen bits and pieces of the first three Doctors adventures, so I have to admit I don't really have much of an attachment to them. Like most Americans, my "first" Doctor was Tom Baker-- he defined the role for me and was my favorite for many years. I liked Peter Davison, Doctor #5, a lot as well. I've only seen one episode each of the Sixth and Seventh Doctors, which isn't really enough to judge them fairly. I thought the Eighth Doctor was OK; too bad he only got to appear one time (in the FOX TV movie). I enjoyed Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor and was sorry to see him go after only one season. David Tennant's Tenth Doctor quickly became my all time favorite. Matt Smith is no slouch as the Eleventh Doctor though. He won me over by the end of his first episode, and is on the fast track to replace Tennant as my favorite.
I really like the new series (or NuWho, as some fans call it) that started up in 2005. Although the old series had its charm, what with the cardboard sets and paper mache aliens, it's nice to finally see the show done with a larger budget and modern production values.
I tweaked a couple of the drawings for this group portrait, fixing some little things that were bugging me.
All eleven Doctors are vector drawings, done entirely in InDesign.
You can see the individual Doctors and read my ramblings about them here:
And even though they're not (yet) in the image above, I've done standalone illustrations of:

Decided to have a little fun with Animesh in Second Life. All characters besides myself are animesh figures.
If you're not familiar with 'animesh', the latest SL update allows you to animate regular mesh objects and make them move on their own, just like mesh avatars. You'll need an animesh-enabled viewer -- the latest version of the SL or Firestorm viewers will work.

DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS !!
'Tis the season to drink rather a lot and this double hand of infernal ignobles practice imoderation in all things. Even evil Emperors, callous Kings and dark lords have got to go, when they've got to go...and so....
Never shy when it comes to spending a forged penny the rival villains (there's no point in ruling a, or many, worlds if you have to share!) agree to a temporary truce
where, for the moment, they'll refrain from crossing, er, swords.
From Left to Right, the assembled Pee-rs of Assorted Sundry Realms include:
-Darkseid, Supreme Monarch of Apokolips from D.C comics. 2008 Mattel action figure, 18 cm (7 inch). Great Darkseid is holding the Anti-Life Equation Motherbox well out of the way, it's one thing to annihilate all living things by choice, quite another to do so accidentally because you dropped the Ultimate Destructor into the urinal trough. "Whoops!" would be just a tad inadequate, though "Flushed!" would perhaps bring a rare smile to even the tyrant's grim face.
-Max von Sydow as Emperor Ming The Merciless of Mongo from "Flash Gordon".
2007 Entertainment Earth, action figure 18 cm (7 inch).
Klytus: "Excuse me your Majesty, if you've finished the minions wish to grovel before your magnificence..."
Ming: "Not yet. I like to play with things a while before....urination."
-Prince Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia aka Vlad Ţepeş (Vlad The Impaler) here seen in his incarnation as Count Dracula from Marvel Comics. 2006 Toy Biz Marvel Legends: Monsters action figure, 18 cm (7 inch).
Drac: "Ohmidemigod! Lookithat! I'm pissing blood...vat's up vith dat? Oh! Heh heh. Wampire! I forgot again." (Several hundreds years old the Master Vampire's memory is not what it once was. Given his late-night liquid suppers it's no wonder his expression is colourful.)
-David Bowie as The Goblin King Jareth from "Labyrinth". 2008 NECA Cult Classics action figure, 18 cm (7 inch). There's always one clown who'll have the ill-manners to answer a call on their cell phone, Palantir, or Dance Magic Dancing Balls whilst visiting the Bog of Eternal Stench.
-Lord of the Nazgûl, the Witch-King of Angmar, from "The Lord Of The Rings". 2003 Toy Biz action figure, 21 cm (8 inch). The Black Captain is always literally relieved to visit the Gents, as he's reasonably certain that most of the other occupants will be Men Of Women Born.
-Ricardo Montalban as the Augment Prince Khan Noonian Singh from "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan". 2007 Diamond Select action figure, 21 cm (8 inch). Frozen in cryogenic suspended animation for over 200 years is a long time between calls of genetically engineered nature. By the way, that's a Ceti Eel behind him...nothing else!
Admiral James T. Kirk: "He's in the CANNNNNN!!!!"
-King of Latveria, Victor Von Doom from Marvel Comics. 2002 Toy Biz action figure 16cm (6 1/2 inch). Armoured as he is Doom's never without a handy wrench so he won't get caught when caught short. Standing next to Kong, Doom displays his legendary iron will (and prudent desire to avoid being turned into Spam in a can) by refraining from passing the tool to the Great Ape with the droll comment, "Monkey wrench?"
-Prince Kong of Skull Island from "King Kong". 1973 Mattel 21 cm (8 inch) toy. (On loan from the Toy Box Of Jason Heller). A little bit younger, a little bit smaller. This is a splendid toy! When manipulated the knurled wheel in the back causes the massive arms to flail about in grand fashion.
-Sir Derek Jacobi as the renegade Timelord, The Master, from "Doctor Who- Utopia". 2006 Character Options action figure, 13 cm (5 inch). As much as I enjoy actor John Simm's interpretation of the Doctor's arch nemesis I would have loved to see Jacobi play the character for a bit longer than it took the Master to shed the disguise of Professor Yana. He's not bothered by having to share the facilities with his fellow meglomaniacs, after all, the Face Of Boe once foretold, "You Are Not Alone." I interviewed Sir Derek before he played The Master...if only I'd known! :)
-Emperor Zurg of Planet Z (voiced by Andrew Stanton) from "Toy Story 2". McHappy Meal action figure, 10 cm (4 inch). Do Cyborgs Stream Electric Pee? Both Zurg and The Master are smaller figures than the others, and with similar scale figures I sometimes use forced perspective (or simply have them standing on a matchbox!) to make them fit the scene. In this case I simply rescaled them in Photoshop.
I used the splashback tiles on our laundry benchtop for the background, with some repurposed model space station solar panels as the decking. A bit of old aluminium sheeting served as the urinal, tweaked a little with Photoshop filters.
It may seem curious that such mighty malevolences don't have individual...thrones...but that's just because the Heroes have commandeered the priority toilets so they can V.I.Pee. Typical!
Regeneration.
A fascinating concept in many ways.
The ability to completely restore one’s body in an instant.
Remarkable isn’t it?
I’ve undergone the process so many times I’ve lost count…..and yet it never gets easier.
You’d imagine that at this point the process would be easy for me. That it would be normal. But there’s nothing normal about it. How would you feel to be rewritten? To know that in order to live, everything about who you are has to change. It scares me every single time I go through it. But uncertainty does that to people. We all fear the unknown in some shape or form. Of course the unknown can appear in so many different ways itself, that’s why we react to various new things we encounter differently. Generally, people react with intrigue. Discovery is perhaps the most rewarding activity of all, so of course when we encounter something new, we're intrigued.
In my case, I often get quite giddy at encountering something new. After just shy of 5,000 years exploring all of time and space it’s rare that I get to speak my favourite saying.
‘I don’t know’
Well….more like my second favourite but that’s not important. Yet at the same time, those same words that excite me, also terrify me. Especially when I know what’s about to happen.
I can already feel the process beginning. The energy build up is already starting to kill my kidneys. What a marvellous colour they are…..they were…..It’s coming. I can feel it.
He’s a coming.
Who? I hear you asking.
That answer is simple.
The Doctor.
The Doctor is coming.
Just what sort of Doctor, I cannot say.
Is he a hero? A healer? A protector?
Who can truly say.
Certainly not this face.
Which then begs the question.
When do I know what sort of man I’ve become?
The answer is ambiguous for a reason. Regeneration is known to be a disorienting process regardless of what number it is. The final of a regeneration cycle is…particularly volatile. The last time I used the last regeneration of a cycle, I destroyed the console room. Ended up crashing into a little girl’s garden shed. Her name…..escapes me.
The curse of the Timelord.
So much life.
So many memories….only to fade away into fragments.
I can barely even remember Susan’s face. My own granddaughter. What sort of a person does that make me?
No doubt so would say that makes me a monster.
How can someone just forget about their family?
But that doesn’t concern me.
What concerns me more, are my actions.
What…
What I did to Davros….
How could I let myself do that?
He was sick.
He was dying.
But that didn’t stop me.
I still whispered those terrible words in his ear….
Maybe one day I can forgive myself for that.
But not like this. Not with this face. The wound isn’t even serious enough to force a regeneration. That’s how ashamed I feel. So disgraced by my own actions that I’m willingly regenerating, simply in the hopes that the process will scramble my brain enough so I’ll forget what I just did.
Sadly, that brief moment of grace will be short lived.
Just like every other moment.
It’ll end.
Everything ends eventually.
Even me.
I’m just slow at doing so.
But that won’t be the case anymore. This is the last regeneration in my second cycle. What the Timelords intended as a gift ended up becoming a prison. Rather fitting for them. Especially given their role in forcing my second change. Frankly, it simply amazes me that I didn’t see that sooner. Rassilon may well have been grateful for when I saved Gallifrey by trapping it in a pocket universe, but I suspect that his reasons are far more primitive than he would ever care to confess.
He was after all, the one who designed Gallifreyan biology to prevent a thirteenth regeneration. Many speculated that was to keep his followers in line. But I know better. Rassilon’s mind was cursed to the dark tower in the death zone on Gallifrey. Whilst he was able to pass in and out of the Matrix, he could never fully integrate with it. He was stuck in our realm for eternity. No wonder he was driven mad.
A story is only meaningful with an ending. In many regards, you can say the same about a life.
Maybe that’s why a new regeneration cycle was granted to me.
To show that I’m worthless.
That I’m disposable.
The Timelords after all, are sworn never to interfere in significant events.
For them to grant me a new cycle so willingly merely demonstrates that.
Or so I like to tell myself.
In reality it’s merely desperation. That’s why they gave me a new cycle. I’m the only one capable of bringing them back into the Universe. Whether they like it or not, I am the one who controls Gallifrey’s future. I would be anyways.
If I could find it.
Ever since the crack in time on Trenzalore closed I’ve found almost nothing. Just…echoes….
Whispers.
Those are all meaningless.
And now, with this regeneration….time is against me.
One last life.
One chance to save an entire species, or cause it’s extinction.
It all begins with the man who inherits this box.
I just hope that man is the Doctor…..

The Doctor: Where am I?
Samuel: You don’t know where you are? You just told us where we are.
The Doctor: I don’t mean where am I exactly. I meant where is my ship? What year is this? What planet?
Samuel: You don’t know what year this is? Did you bang your head or something? How can you forget what year this is!
The Doctor: How can you not answer a question?
Vale: This is the 18th Vagabond fleet, ship six designation ‘Peregrine’. Year 3184.
The Doctor: Thank you, see? Not so difficult is it young….?
Samuel: I just said my name five minutes ago.
The Doctor: Well how do you expect me to remember all that? Five minutes have passed since then!
Samuel: How do you forget something you were told five minutes ago?
The Doctor: I don’t know how do you manage to keep asking questions rather than answering mine.
Samuel: Samuel. The name is Samuel.
The Doctor: Good. Excellent. Tell you what it’s a bit dark in here, why’s no-one turned the lights on?
Vale: Umm because this is your ship? We don’t exactly know how it works.
The Doctor: That makes three of us.
Samuel: What? You don’t know how to fly your own ship?
The Doctor: And a bird doesn’t know how to fly it just does it. What’s your point?
Samuel: Your ship landed in ours.
The Doctor: Did it? That’s rather unfortunate. It didn’t leave a big hole did it?
The both look at one another clearly perplexed. Evidently their question was more how the Tardis managed to enter their ship without leaving a gaping big hole in the ship’s outer hull. Either way that’s promising. The dematerialisation circuit is clearly still functioning at least.
Vale: Um, no. It didn’t leave any hole what so ever.
The Doctor: Oh well that’s good then no horrible death in the cold vacuum of space today then! Anyways, as I was saying. Lights!
I reach across the console and pull one of the levers down, redirecting power towards internal lighting. Just why the Tardis rerouted all that power in the first place is beside me. Either my previous body was an idiot who believed the lighting problem to be another fault with the Tardis or he just liked the moody lighting. Potentially both.
As the lights come on the console room is illuminated by more than just the light emitting from the time rotor, the results of my last regeneration become clear to the eye. The console room is covered in scorch marks and several storage crates are overturned with their contents all over the console room floor. A quick assessment of the console itself shows serious damage to it as well. Frankly, it’s a marvel that I was able to actually land safely. Assuming it was me who landed it.
Samuel: What happened here?
The Doctor: I decided to make some changes to my appearance. Unfortunately, I appear to have also created this mess whilst doing so.
Vale: And the scorch marks?
The Doctor: My fault but I can fix that.
Samuel: And just what are you are wearing?
I look down to inspect what I was wearing from my previous body. An interesting look to say the least. Can’t say that I like it though.
The Doctor: I’m not so sure myself.
Vale: Is everything alright? Your clothes are covered in scorch marks as well?
The Doctor: Relax. Everything’s fine Teagan.
Samuel: Teagan? Who the hell is Teagan?
The Doctor: Oi, mind your language Harry. I didn’t know what the Time Lords were getting us into when they sent us to Skaro so you can’t blame me!
Vale: Are you alright?
The Doctor: Look at me Rory of course I’m not alright I’ve just regenerated!
Samuel: Rory? Regenerated? Just what are you talking about.
The Doctor: Come on Ace, focus. What did I tell you a Time Lord does when they’re close to death?
Samuel: Ace? Time Lord?
The Doctor: Yes Time Lord, it’s what I am, we’ve been over this how many times now Turlough?
Samuel: Turlough?
The Doctor: Oh I give up. Susan tell these poor fools all they need to know. I’m tired of trying to explain the complexities of the universe to idiots.
Samuel: Hey! Who are you calling idiots? You’re the one that’s not making sense.
The Doctor: I’m making perfect sense River, I always do. You lot just haven’t caught up yet. ARRGH!
My mind is burning. It’s rejigging itself in the aftermath of the regeneration so I’m acting erratic. Unwittingly drifting between the personalities and memories of past incarnations in seconds. I just….I just need to take a moment and……rest
Vale: Samuel! Grab him!
As the strange man appears to lose consciousness, I race to catch him just before he falls to the ground. I only just manage to grab hold of him before he completely collapses.
Samuel: Sir, are you alright? Doctor? Doctor can you hear me?
The Doctor: Screw….driver…
Samuel: Take it easy. I’ve got you.
The Doctor: Where’s….my…..screw…..driver…..I nee…..
Before he can complete his sentence, the man falls unconscious and a loud noise erupts from with in his ship. I can’t be certain just what exactly it was, but it sounded like a bell of some sorts. Why does his ship make a noise that sounds like a church bell?
Samuel: Vale, what do we do?
Vale: Hold him firmly, we’ve got to get him to the medical bay.
Samuel: But what was he saying and just how did he get here?
Vale: I don’t know Samuel. But right now there’s a man in need of our help. We’ve got to get him to Hala right away.
Samuel: I’m on it.
I reach into the inside pocket of my jacket and pull out my communicator.
Samuel: Jerro, we’re gonna need you and Hala to prep the medical bay.
Jerro: Why? What’s happened? Are you both alright?
Samuel: Don´t worry we’re fine. But our visitor isn’t.
Jerro: Visitor? We have an intruder on board? How did he get on?
I pause for a moment and look around the so called ‘Tardis’ befuddled as to how best to explain it.
Samuel: I’m working on it.
Jerro: Well then who is this intruder? Human? Male? Female? We need to know what to prepare for Sam!
Samuel: Human by the looks of him. Male. Young, brown hair. Possible skin burns by the look of his ship and clothing.
Jerro: Alright, I’ll prepare the med bay for him. Does he have a name?
Samuel: Yeah, he calls himself the Doctor.
Jerro: Doctor? Doctor Who?
In a secret chamber deep below the S.H.A.D.O. moonbase the Doctor and Lt. Ellis make a shocking discovery; an old enemy of the Timelord*, and a future enemy of the Earth, in deep stasis.
* or at least an old enemy from my childhood days when the Denys Fisher Doctor Who and Muton toys used to slug it out on my bedroom floor!
“well, you see, i’m what we call a timelord. i come from a place further away than you can imagine. i’m called The Doctor; i’m a time traveller; and this, as you can see, is my ship. if you fancy getting away for a bit, you’re welcome to come along.”
(but who else is onboard the tardis??)
(maybe that’s who "corrected" Fourteen’s shirt )
i had to buy 2 of this very perfect tee from DollzWithLove etsy, so that i could edit one of them for the timelords.
fourteen's kilt is from the medicom mad hatter. i have more realistic kilts but this one looked the most tardis-y. his purple jacket is from a suit sold for slightly bigger action figures (not sure of the name). the boots are from the other recent looks guy, only i added colorful laces.
spymaster is wearing mostly BCS clothing, with a coat that i'm also not sure about, and boots from supermc.
This was mostly an experiment to see if I could get the time rotor going upside down. And I could!
Ended up sticking a bureaucrat time lord in there, of the kind who often showed up to bother the Third Doctor during his exile.
-Valorem Protector Time Jump Ship-
Jarl: Are you sure this is what we should be doing?
Carlo: I’m more certain about this than anything else in my life bar joining the Protectors.
Jarl: I know, but he’s just a kid.
Carlo: So were you once, look how much you changed. We have to do it, Carlo. You know what he will become.
Jarl: But that doesn’t make it right.
Carlo: Nothing we do in this universe is right for everyone.
Jarl: But that doesn’t pardon what we’re about to do!
Carlo: No, it doesn’t. But we have no choice. Either we deal with him now, or the blood on his hands also becomes blood on ours.
Jarl: But either way, we’ll still have blood on our hands!
Carlo: That’s the price we must pay to save them. Standby. I’m bringing us alongside the vessel now.
Jarl: Have they detected us?
Carlo: No. These colony ships are a crude patchwork job done to escape the solar storm that buffeted Earth in the 29th century. I’m frankly amazed they even have propulsion given the state they’re in. Life signs?
Jarl: Picking up five on board. One young, one unconscious.
Carlo: That’s definitely him. Magnetise and prepare for boarding.
Jarl: On it.
-Human Colony Class-II Kiln Ship Designation ‘Peregrine’-
I don’t know what sort of species has two hearts nor can still appear to be human, but I can’t take any chances. With us being the only four members of the skeleton crew we’ve all had to take on additional duties, including myself as head of security. Of course, that’s not my actual position, I’m primarily a ship engineer, but he doesn’t have to know that. What matters most is that he doesn’t know. People are far less likely to make moves against you when they have to contend with security as well.
Unfortunately, the medical bay doesn’t have much to offer in the way of security aside from a forcefield designed to keep airborne infections restrained. Just how successful it is at restraining an alien is unknown. Hopefully very.
Jerro: What do we do now?
Vale: I suppose, we wait and see if that forcefield will keep him contained.
Hala: That’s a very big ‘if’, Vale.
Samuel: Do you have any alternatives? As they’d be more than welcome.
Jerro: We could always try rerouting more of the power from the ship’s core to the forcefield. That should increase the density making it more difficult to pass through.
Hala: That’s too risky, especially with most of the ship’s power directed towards cryogenics.
Vale: We could always reach out to the rest of the fleet for support.
Hala: No. We can’t risk engaging the rest of the fleet until we know exactly what we’re dealing with here.
Samuel: We’re dealing with an alien that managed to board our ship with his own!
Hala: And how, dear Samuel, did he manage that without leaving a massive hole in the hull whilst doing so?
Samuel: I’m still working on that one. Not to mention how his ship has managed to disguise itself as a 1960’s police telephone box.
Jerro: How can a ship disguise itself as something so small?
The Doctor: Trans….dimensional….engineering.
Hala: He’s awake!?
The Doctor: Reverse……the polarity…..of……the neutron….flow.
Jerro: How do you reverse the polarity of neutrons? They don’t have any charge!
Rather than saying another thing, the alien who gave himself the name Doctor instead releases another small amount of golden-yellow energy from his mouth as be breaths out. Could that be weaponised? Harnessed? Is that raw energy that he’s emitting? If it is, we could use him to power the ship.
Hala: He’s doing it again.
Samuel: What do you think that stuff is, Vale?
Jerro: Maybe it´s the natural by product of his body performing aerobic respiration, but instead of producing carbon dioxide as our bodies do, maybe his body produces whatever that stuff is.
Samuel: Thanks Jerro, but I was asking what Vale thinks the stuff is.
Vale: What Jerro said.
Jerro’s smirk upon hearing Vale’s words is impossible to not notice, but I do my best to not dignify it with a response.
-Valorem Protector Time Jump Ship-
Jarl: We’re magnetised to their hull and I’ve got a lock on his position.
Carlo: Where is he?
Jarl: Medical bay. All of the crew are there with him.
Carlo: We’ll have to draw their attention in order to isolate him. We’ll hit the ship’s main power core, that should shut down all nonessential systems and draw the crew away from him.
Jarl: I’ve got a fix on the power core’s location.
Carlo: Take us aboard.
Jarl: Engaging transmat.
-Human Colony Class-II Kiln Ship Designation ‘Peregrine’-
Hala: What the hell do we do, Samuel?
Samuel: I don’t know.
Hala: I hate it when you say that.
Samuel: Well excuse me, there’s no protocol on how to deal with alien intruders.
Vale: We could always try throwing him out the airlock.
Jerro: Vale! We can’t do that! Especially not whilst he’s in this condition.
Samuel: Especially not until we know what that box of his is.
Before Hala or Vale can respond to my decision, the power suddenly fails and an alarm sounds as the emergency power core attempts to start up.
Hala: The power core’s turned off!
Vale: How the hell did that happen!?
Samuel: Nevermind that, we need to focus on getting it back online otherwise….
Jerro: The cryopods!
Samuel: Hala, you and Jerro head to the cryocontrol and try to route as much of the emergency power to the pods as possible. Vale, with me. We need to get the core back online!
Jerro: But what about him?
Jerro says pointing to the alien who calls himself the Doctor.
Samuel: Forget about him, right now we’ve got to get the pods back online otherwise this whole colonisation effort has been for nothing!
Did I have the right?
Of course you had the right.
That doesn’t mean I should have.
But you did.
And you’re pleased with that?
You aren’t?
Of course I’m not.
You sound unsure.
Because it’s not the first time we’ve been responsible for genocide, is it?
Nor will it be our last.
Yes it will. I won’t allow another.
The Daleks were a plague on this universe. Left unchecked they were far too great a threat to be allowed to continue. You had no choice. We had no choice.
We always have a choice.
Do we? How many times have you slaughtered Daleks without a second thought?
You already know the answer to that.
Yet now you regret? Were it not for the Daleks the universe would be a better place! Gallifrey would not be lost! You’d be able to sleep at night without hearing the screaming children. Donna would have still been with you! The Master wouldn’t have lost his mind. What we did was for the greater good.
So you like to keep saying. But good is a point of view.
Not in this case.
I disagree.
Of course you do. You always do.
What do you want from me? Are you not content with what you did?
I was. I’m just disgusted that you intervened and cut my time short.
You had to be stopped.
You mean, we had to be stopped.
That wasn’t me.
Oh yes it was, and you know it. That’s why you forced the regeneration, hoping it would purge me from your brain. Trying to remember what the Master said about me, all those years ago?
You’re not part of me.
I am, and you hate it. I’ve always been part of you. You’ve just been hesitant to use me.
I don’t believe you.
Whether or not you believe me is irrelevant. The facts show otherwise. Not just what we did in that last body, but what we did in the Time War.
We had no choice when we fought in the war.
Just as we had no choice with Davros.
No. We had a choice in that situation. But we made the wrong choice. We decided to treat him exactly as his creations would. We chose to be Daleks.
Davros always did remark on how well we’d function as one of his creations. Fuelled simply hate, killing all who stand in our way.
I would never kill. I am not a Dalek.
Oh don’t act so naïve. You’ve done it countless times before, and you’ll continue to do it until this body expires. Do I even have to mention the Time War again? Several Dalek legions didn’t simply evolve into dust by themselves, and there was only one Timelord who mastered the chronic tripwire perfectly.
….
Nothing to say?
What do you want?
What I am rightfully owed. A life to myself. One without your self-righteous interference.
You should never have access to so much power.
And you should? We’re two sides of the same person you and I. Deny it all you want but you’re just as deadly as I am. The sole difference is that you’re afraid of me. You hold me back. But every once in a while, you drop the disguise, and out I come to save the day.
So you like to believe. All you crave is destruction, the admiration of billions and power.
You don’t?
This isn’t why we left Gallifrey.
Why you left Gallifrey. You ran from Gallifrey, Doctor, fearing what you saw when you stared into the untempered schism millennia ago. You never told anyone what you saw, out of fear that it would become reality.
No-one remembers what they see in the untempered schism.
But you did. Didn’t you Doctor? What made you run?
You know full well what it was.
I do. But I like to hear you say it.
Never.
What do you hope to accomplish now though? Gallifrey has been lost ever since your first thirteen incarnations froze it in a pocket universe, and you have spent the entirety of your second cycle trying to find it. Your friends have long since passed and thanks to your unwelcome meddling, we’re now on body twenty-four with no regenerations left.
We both know that’s a lie. A Timelord can always regenerate beyond the limits of his regeneration cycle.
That’s suicide.
Indeed. So I’d tread carefully if I were you. Push me too far and I’ll destroy us both.
You’d seriously go that far, just to keep me in line? I’m flattered.
Don’t be. With Gallifrey lost there’s no chance of us separating anytime soon, so if I must, I’ll take you down with me.
How noble. The wannabe hero is willing to kill himself, all to save the universe from himself.
I won’t let you do to others what you did to Davros.
You may not have a choice.
Neither may you.
Fighting words. How exciting. So are you going to see what we got with this new body or what?
I hope I’m not ginger.
Yes, we had rather hyped it up a bit in our head thinking it would be exciting.
The hair always made choosing clothes a nightmare.
I said we should have tried the scarf. It probably would have done wonders alongside our majestic hair.
A bow tie would have suited it more.
Oh come on, I thought we grew out of bowties.
Of course not.
Please don’t tell me that means you’re going to make us wear one for this incarnation.
That depends on how well you behave.
Threatening me with a bow tie? I’d be shocked if it wasn’t the sixth time you’ve used a bow tie to threaten someone.
The floor feels cold.
Clearly she’s landed.
I suppose we’ll have to find out where. Now where’s the mirror?
Oh, I deleted it from the desktop theme.
Delightful. I guess I’ll have to do this the old fashioned way. I hope you’ve not left the old girl in a mess.
Vale: Samuel! This isn’t a police box it’s…..it’s….what the hell is this!?
Sounds like we have neighbours. Hope they’re nice.
Intruders more like. We should activate the defences.
Don’t be silly, clearly someone’s curiosity has made them wonder what a 1960’s police telephone box is doing…wherever we are. Where has she taken us?
Samuel: What are you talking about old ma……what the….what….what is this?
The Doctor: It’s called the Tardis.
Samuel: What?
Vale: Where did you come from?
Samuel: Tardis?
The Doctor: Time And Relative Dimension In Space.
Samuel: An acronym?
The Doctor: Clearly.
Samuel: How did it get in here without breaching the hull?
The Doctor: Well it’s a long stor….wait…When you say hull do you mean ship hull or Hull, the city in Yorkshire?
Vale: Hull city?
The Doctor: Clearly ship hull if you don’t know what Hull is. Can’t say I blame you it’s relatively boring there until 4567. Clearly we’re either in the past or far future. Well that’s an interesting question young…….errr…your name?
Samuel: Samuel, Samuel Chase and this is Vale.
The Doctor: Pleased to meet you. I’m the Doctor.
Samuel: Doctor? Doctor Who?
I love it when they ask that.
Of course you would.
With a scan of the kidnapper’s transmat safely within the sonic, Samuel, Vale and myself make our way back to the Tardis. Given the vast complexities of isolating a transmat beam and successfully reversing it without some fault arising due to the transmat not being properly calibrated, it’s far more sensible to track the signal rather than reverse it. Not to mention the fact that the only logical conclusion that can be made for a transmat being used in this era means time travel is also at play. Especially now given that the Daleks are gone and Cybermen are in such a sad state that it'll take them millennia to master teleportation again.
I do hope this transmit was constructed after the 41st century. Almost all transmats after that period have a unique microcode embedded in the signal it uses to transport goods or people. How else are you supposed to stop the potential of transmats interfering with one another? Gosh that would be terrible. Then again, it’s not like that hasn’t happened before. Infact, I’m pretty sure some cargo pirates made a living off of that fault in older transmats. Hopefully, whoever these time travelling abductors are, they’re from a point in time after the 41st century. If not this goes from simply tracking back a signal to trying to find a needle in haystack.
Probably best not to mention that possibility to either Vale or Samuel. At least, not until I’m certain. Given how I’ve only just finished regenerating it’s possible my mind is still in a bit of a puddle…….cuddle……muddle!
Clearly more so than I thought. Once I’ve helped get the boy safely home I’ll need to spend some time in the zero room to properly recover from the regeneration, and more importantly to get my head in order. As we all turn the corner and lay eyes upon the familiar shape of that old police telephone box, I suddenly realise something.
The Doctor: Do either of you have my key?
Vale: Your key? For what?
The Doctor: For my antimatter disrupter.
Vale: You need an antimatter disrupter? Why?
The Doctor: I was being sarcastic, nobody needs a key for an antimatter disruptor, I’m asking if either of you have my key for the Tardis.
Samuel: Your time machine needs a key to start it?
The Doctor: No! But I need the key to unlock the door! It’s a time machine after all, you can’t be too cautious. Do either of you have it?
Samuel: I don’t think so…
Vale: I didn’t see any key when we were inside it last. Speaking of which, if you need a key to open the doors how come we were able to get into it last time with a key?
The Doctor: It’ll have been the help the pilot protocol. Since I’d only just regenerated the Tardis will have taken me to the nearest thing in range with a medical bay, thus why it also disabled the locks to let you both in.
Samuel: Then how come it doesn’t want to let us in now? It’s not exactly like we did anything to help you recover.
The Doctor: No you didn’t, but the Tardis will have detected that my regeneration is all but complete thus it reinstated the security protocols.
Samuel: So what? We’re locked outside of your ship? Then how are we going to get back Jerro!?
The Doctor: Oh that's simple. Like this.
I click my fingers together and the sound faintly echoes through the corridor as both Vale and Samuel wait for something to happen. For a good few seconds, nothing does. Clearly the old girl is starting to feel her age. But then, before I have a chance to consider clicking my fingers again, the door unlocks and opens to reveal the console room. They appear caught off guard to learn that I can unlock the Tardis with a snap of my fingers and to an extent, I was when I first learned I could do it as well. Thank you, River.
Vale: Did you just….?
Samuel: I think he did…..
As I place my hand on the Tardis door I can feel her humming as the engines begin to come alive once again. We may have aged, old girl, but moments like these never get old. Even after nearly five thousand years travelling with her. Before I have a chance to enjoy the moment, she swings open both doors and to my shock she’s changed the console room……again.
The Doctor: Oh look at you, old girl. You’ve redecorated. Aren’t you beautiful?
Given my vague post-regenerative state when both Vale and Samuel found me in the Tardis, I can’t help but wonder if this change in desktop theme is by accident or by her design. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time for either. Part of me also can’t help but wonder if I was still connected to the telepathic circuits whilst unconscious. Maybe she realised the struggle that was going on within me. Maybe she changed the console room to try and help me forget what my previous incarnation did.
A kind gesture.
But we can never truly escape our past.
Samuel: It’s…..different….
Vale: How? How has it done that?
The Doctor: It’s nothing, trust me. All that’s happened is a small change of the desktop theme. Ah! There it is!
They both seem baffled by what I could possibly mean as I point in their general direction as they both step into the Tardis.
The Doctor: I was worried she might have removed of it when I wasn’t looking.
Samuel: You were worried she’d get rid……of a coat rack? Wait, she?
The Doctor: Trust me, we’ve been having this back and forth for centuries. She think it’s stupid to have a coat rack in the main console room when I haven’t worn a long coat, hat or scarf for quite a few bodies in a row.
Vale: What are you talking about? She? Bodies?
The Doctor: ‘She’ is called the Tardis. You’re standing inside her and she’s going to help me get your friend back.
Samuel: And the bodies part?
The Doctor: Well when you say like that, you make me sound like I’m some sort of murderous freak.
Vale:…..Are you?
The Doctor: Not to my knowledge.
Samuel: That’s…..not exactly reassuring.
The Doctor: Fine, long story short I’m an alien with the ability to regenerate where my body completely transforms and I in effect become an entirely different man, or sometimes woman. Had a few of those in the past, boy were they exciting. But yeah, any questions?
Neither of them say a thing, instead choosing to look at me as if I were some sort of bizarre mythical creature to them. Maybe I am, perhaps that’s the legacy of the Time Lords. Little more than mythical beings that become the stories told to children. The only difference is that unlike most of those stories, the Time Lords were real. Well…I suppose the Lochness monster is also real even though it was actually a Skarasen being used by the Zygons, but who am I to judge how history chooses to romanticise historical events?
Well….I should probably be the one to judge it actually….last of the Time Lords and all…..it really is my responsibility to uphold the doctrine. Then again, I’ve flouted it almost from the moment I left Gallifrey. Not to mention the Time Lords themselves abandoned that principle long ago when they decided to fight the Time War, though it’s not like they had any choice in the matter really.
Samuel: Ummmm…..ok……….
The Doctor: Now, let’s see if we can find the people who abducted your friend.
I’m momentarily caught off guard by the absence of the sonic screwdriver port. Clearly she's decide to reorganise the console again.I do wish she'd let me know before she did it. Fortunately, the Tardis realises my momentary pause and quickly directs me to the port’s new position. Directly under the monitor, good choice old girl. As I plug the screwdriver into the console, and the Tardis begins to track the signal and lock onto the abductor’s timeline I turn back to look at both Samuel and Vale. They both seem rather overwhelmed by the new console room. Come to think of it, is it bigger than the last one?
The Doctor: So what do you think?
Vale. Is it bigger than last time?
Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks so.
Samuel: It’s certainly more well lit.
Vale: Cleaner too.
The Doctor: I aim to please.
Even if most of the improvements have absolutely nothing to do with me.
The Doctor: So the……oh…..
The Tardis lets out a faint ding to indicate that it has locked onto the transmat's signal. After a brief moment it manages to identify the ship which took young Jerro and pinpoints a suitable time point along the abductor's timeline for us to intercept them. I briefly check the co-ordinates to see just where they're going. Given how these kidnappers have access to time travel it's also possible they have technology to interfere with other species' time machines.
Valorem.
Curious, I wasn’t aware they had ever developed time travel. No matter, that’s where the people who abducted Jerro went, so that’s where we going.
Samuel: Doctor?
The Doctor: Found him. Locking on to his signal!
I quickly type in the co-ordinates for Valorem and the time date their ship jumped to before racing over to engine release lever.
The Doctor: You may want to hang on to something. The first ride is always the bumpiest.
Before either of them can ask just what I mean, I pull the lever down triggering the dematerialisation circuit as the engines roar to life as they begin to draw power from the Eye of Harmony. The console room jerks sharply as we depart the human colony ship and pass into the time vortex.
Next stop: Valorem.
She walked down the corridor and looked at him. "Why would you run, you know you can't win.....". She sighed , fixed points in time were more trouble than they were worth.
Another quick shot without a lot of post production. You can see the tree's depth better in this photo.

A few years ago I made a Doctor Who Team-Up Infographic. It was OK, but it didn't come out the way it looked in my head and I never really liked the design.
So I finally took the time to redesign it, and add the additional team-up episode that aired in 2013 (timely I know, but hey, I'm busy).
Obviously you'll have to view "Original Size" to read the text.
Every now and then the Doctor faces a situation that even he can't tackle alone. That's when he uses his TARDIS to go back in time and recruit his past selves for help. Think of it as your 30 year old self using a time machine to get your 20 year old self to help you move your couch.
So far most of my infographics have been 12" x 18." I knew I'd never fit all this info into that size, so I decided not to worry about it, and just let the material dictate the height.
For non-fans of the show, those circular symbols in the background are Gallifreyan words.
There was a lot of moving around of elements and rewriting of text to get everything just right. I'm a lot happier with this version.
As fun as these team-up episodes are, historically there's always been some sort of problem with each one, making them less than perfect. For example, in The Three Doctors, actor William Hartnell (who played the First Doctor) was in poor health and was only able to interact with the other Doctors via a view screen, so it was really just two Doctors running around. Pity.
Then in The Five Doctors, Hartnell had sadly passed away and was replaced by actor Richard Hurndall. He did a good job, but naturally it just wasn't the same. Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor, declined to participate, and appears for only a few seconds through the magic of stock footage. Baker has recently said he regrets his decision.
In The Two Doctors, actor Patrick Troughton had aged visibly since his tenure on the series, and his hair had gone almost completely gray. This was distracting to say the least, since he was supposed to be the same age as the last time we saw him. This would have been such an easy fix— all they had to do was dye his hair black. Does hair dye not exist in England?
The Day Of The Doctor is marred by problems as well— namely the absence of the Ninth Doctor. In the episode, The Moment brings the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors back in time to show the War Doctor the massive guilt he'll experience if he destroys Gallifrey.
But Ten and Eleven don't seem all that guilt-ridden or damaged, seeing as how they spend a good amount of screen time joking around with one another. The Ninth Doctor was the one closest to the tragedy and the one who always had an air of sadness and tragedy about him. He'd have been a great example for The Moment to have used. So why wasn't he in the episode?
Unfortunately actor Christopher Eccleston, who played the Ninth Doctor, has some sort of beef with the BBC and refuses to reprise the role. That's his business of course, but you'd think he could have set aside his differences for the sake of the fans. Story-wise it makes no sense for him to not be in the episode, and hurts it overall.
I knew that show runner Stephen Moffat's plots were overly convoluted and needlessly complicated, but nowhere was that more evident than when I started writing up the synopsis for The Day Of The Doctor. I was able to distill the other episodes down to a few short paragraphs. It took many times that to try and explain Day, even after leaving out a ton of stuff.
I kept whittling away at it and slashing elements until I got it down to a manageable size. You may notice that the Zygon subplot, that takes up a good amount of the run time, is barely mentioned in my synopsis. That's because I realized it's completely superfluous. It has absolutely nothing to do with the overall War Doctor plot line and could be edited out of the show completely without harming the episode one bit. Such are Stephen Moffat's scripts.
Hopefully there won't be any more team-ups for a while, so I won't have to update it again.
There have been several other team-ups in the various Doctor Who audio books, novels and comics, but I'm just listing the more well known televised ones.
Drawn and designed all in InDesign.

This little graphic is just another reminder to prove that I’m still here (and not always in Tamriel) and to bridge the time until I finish my next larger MOC.
Those of you who can translate the message in the picture will know what I’m talking about.
But hey, no spoilers ;o)
Vale: Get to the medical bay, make sure he’s still secure. I’ll follow behind with Hala.
Samuel: Vale, are you sure? I wouldn’t want to risk your….
Vale: I’ll be fine, just go!
As concerned as I am about Vale’s health and whether or not he should be carrying anyone to the medical bay, he’s right. If this ‘Doctor’ has anything to do with the people who just abducted Jerro, I need to secure him. It’s possible that if he is connected to all of this, we can maybe use him to get Jerro back.
Samuel: Alright, but you go steady!
Vale: We’ll be fine Samuel, now go!
Without saying another word, I race off towards the medical bay. Hopefully, the reactivated core has started feeding power back to the containment field again. That way, if these abductors are working with him, we can at least hold one of their own hostage to give us some leverage.
I quickly find my answer as the door opens to the medical bay where I find the self described ‘Doctor’ sat on the same bed we left him on seemingly in meditation. He’s awake, clearly, but thankfully hasn’t escaped. That’s something at least. The field must still be working if he’s still here.
Samuel: Talk, who are you?
The Doctor: Haven’t we already gone over this in the Tardis?
Samuel: You mean that box?
The Doctor: Do you know of any other box that’s dimensionally transcendental?
Samuel: Dimensionally what?
The Doctor: Bigger on the inside. Gosh you’re awfully forgetful.
Samuel: Where’s Jerro?
The Doctor: Who?
Samuel: Jerro. The young boy your people just abducted?
The Doctor: My people? I have people now? Sorry, regeneration has a habit of scrambling the brain a little bit. What do you mean by ‘my people’?
Samuel: Your friends who just abducted Jerro! The nine year old boy who was helping us run this ship!
The Doctor: What? Why would someone abduct a nine year old child?
Samuel: You tell me.
The Doctor: I don’t know. But I’m keen to find out. Tell me, I can’t help but detect a faint electromagnetic charge in the air, these abductors didn’t happen to use some sort of teleport did they?
Samuel: Yes….they did….how did you know? You’ve been trapped here since we brought you here.
That probably explains why I’m lacking one sonic screwdriver. If the crew of this vessel brought me here and felt inclined to use a crude containment field to try and restrain me, they’re probably some distance away from mastering the manipulation of matter for teleportation. No wonder they took the sonic away from me. To this lot it could very well be a laser sword or a brand new source of power. Well….I suppose it could actually be the latter, but they were never going to know the difference.
The Doctor: I thought that’s what the faint surge I sensed was!
Samuel:….You can tell when someone’s used a teleport?
The Doctor: On a good day. Teleportation systems almost always leave a slight charge in the air after use. Normally this charge is outside the range of what most species can detect, fortunately we Time Lords can sense just about all forms of electromagnetic energy. Give or take a few.
Samuel: Time Lord?
The Doctor: You haven’t heard of us? Charming. A billion years shaping the fabric of time and space and this is our legacy. Absolutely nothing. We’re a class of Gallifreyans who were one of the first beings to master the art of time travel. As such, it has been our duty to watch over and observe all of time and space.
Samuel: You can’t be serious. You’re telling me that you have control over time and space?
The Doctor: Well…..not really, more I have influence with it on a good day and can travel throughout it.
Samuel: That’s ridiculous.
The Doctor: You’ve set foot inside a box that’s bigger on the inside and just had a young boy abducted from your colony ship using a teleporter that doesn’t belong to this time period. Welcome to reality. Ridiculous, isn’t it?
Samuel: Wait, what did you just say?
The Doctor: Welcome to reality. Ridiculous, isn’t i…
Samuel: No, not that bit. What did you say about the teleporter?
The Doctor: That it doesn’t belong to this time period. Open ended transmat technology won’t be developed by humanity for at least another hundred years….or is it four hundred years? Sorry, my memory is all over the place right now.
Samuel: So you’re not with those that abducted Jerro?
The Doctor: If I am, it’s news to me.
Samuel: But you know the teleportation technology? Can you track it?
The Doctor: Can I? I’d never have made out of the academy if I couldn’t track or even reverse a basic particle matter transporter. I just need my sonic screwdriver.
Samuel: Sonic screwdriver?
The Doctor: Metal thing, gold tip with an orange light. Makes a noise when you press the button and possibly does a few other things if you’re not careful. Looks a bit like a cool magic wand.
Samuel: Do you mean this thing?
Miraculously, the boy knew exactly what I was saying without the need to describe it further. Most unusual, have I managed to get better at describing things simply to humans? This new regeneration is amazing so far! Seeing him remove it from his jacket pocket is even better though, as that means the sonic was in close proximity to whoever or whatever was teleported. So in theory….
The Doctor: Yes, exactly that thing. Pass it to me.
At first he reaches forward to hand the sonic over to me before pausing.
Samuel: Hold on, I need to disable the containment field first.
The Doctor: Why? It’s been down ever since your power core shut off.
Samuel: It has?
The Doctor: Yeah….things that require power tend to shut off they losespower.
Samuel: Then why haven’t you tried to escape?
The Doctor: Regeneration is a tiring process, plus I couldn’t leave without my sonic screwdriver now that would be very irresponsible of me.
Samuel: Regeneration? You’re not making any sense.
The Doctor: Well, some things never change. Now come on we haven’t got all say, pass me the screwdriver.
The young man reaches inwards to pass me the sonic just when his colleague enters the room carrying an unconscious woman over his shoulders.
Samuel: Vale!
Vale: Help me with her.
Before I can grab hold of the screwdriver, the young man walks over to help his elderly friend lift the unconscious woman onto the bed beside mine. They both quickly check her pulse again to make sure she’s alright. Judging from her current condition I’d say she was stunned. An unwelcome surprise no doubt, but she’ll be fine in an hour or so depending upon what setting the weapon used.
The Doctor: She’ll be fine, from what I can tell she was only stunned. Give it an hour or so and she’ll be good as new.
Vale: How do you know that?
The Doctor: Still breathing, unconscious but no visible signs of trauma points towards an energy weapon of some sorts. Given how your colleague here has now confirmed that a transmat was also used by people to board and leave this ship, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that your boarders stunned her and then fled having kidnapped young Jerro.
Vale: How do you know all that?
The Doctor: Your friend told me.
Vale: Friend?
The Doctor: Yes, friend. Or colleague or whatever you want to call him. Actually that’s a good point, what is your name again?
Samuel: Samuel….Samuel Whitehall. This is….
Vale: Vale. The name’s Vale.
The Doctor: No last name?
Vale: Not one I’m willing to reveal.
The Doctor: Okay…..right as I was saying. Pass me the screwdriver and I’ll help you retrieve your friend.
Vale: Sonic screwdriver?
Samuel: He means this thing.
Samuel raises his hand that has hold of the sonic for Vale to see.
Vale: That’s a screwdriver?
The Doctor: It’s sonic.
As Vale appears perplexed by the idea that the sonic is in fact a screwdriver, Samuel walks forward and places it on the foot of my bed.
Vale: Wait, Samuel.
Samuel: What is it now?
The pair turn to look at each other as I quietly reach across and grab hold of the sonic. I quickly check to see if it managed to get a good enough background scan of the signal left behind by the boarders transmat beam. Thankfully, it did.
Vale: You’re seriously going to trust this total stranger, just like that?
Samuel: He says he can get Jerro back, Vale. We have to try.
Vale: But how can we be sure he won’t just run off the moment we let him back into his ship?
The Doctor: You can come with me, if you want.
Samuel: What?
The Doctor: There’s plenty of space in my ship for more than one, well you’ve both seen that with your own eyes. But if you really want to get Jerro back then sure, come with me.
Samuel: I don’t know about this.
Vale: What about Hala?
The Doctor: She’ll be out for at least another hour. Come on, it shouldn’t take that long to get your friend back.
Both of them seem conflicted, at guess I’d says it’s over whether it’s right to leave their friend alone in her current condition. Or maybe it’s trying to decide whether or not they can trust me. Either way I’m not particularly fussed. They were kind enough to give me a bed when I needed some time to rest, so it’s only right that I return the favour. Possibly without the need for a containment field.
They both turn back to face me before having one last glance at the unconscious woman.
Samuel: Are you sure she’ll be alright?
The Doctor: Don’t worry. It’s a time machine. We’ll be there and back in a second. So what do you say?
Vale: Alright…..
Samuel: We’re in.
The Doctor: Marvellous. Alright, let’s go! To the Tardis!
Hala: Jerro! Jerro where are you?
Jarl: She’s getting closer.
Carlo: Then you’d better hurry up and get the ship back in range to transmat us off.
Jarl: Carlo, don’t do what I think you’re about to do.
Carlo: It’s the first rule of time travel, Jarl. We cannot be seen or we risk splintering the timeline.
Jarl: But we’ve already become part of the timeline from the moment we shut down the drive core!
Jerro: You two are the reason the power core shutdown?
Carlo: Quiet heathen. We have no choice Jarl. We don’t know anything about the crew on this ship, they could be well armed. I’m not about to risk losing another one of us simply to keep you happy. Now hurry up and get the ship here!
Damn it Hala, we’ve been boarded by an unknown force and they’re currently holding Jerro hostage. The last thing we need right now is to be divided and rushing into an unknown situation.
Samuel: Vale, please tell me you know a quick way to get to cryo.
Vale: Take a hard right here.
Samuel: The climate system?
Vale: You wanted a quick way, I can’t give you one that’s comfortable as well.
Samuel: Damn it, fine pass me a gun.
Vale: You don’t want me to come with you?
Samuel: Given how we have no idea what we’re dealing with we can’t risk moving in from just one direction. I’ll head to cryo from here, you take the main entrance.
As I open the access hatch and into the tunnel for the climate control system, Vale passes me one of the guns he retrieved from the armour. Instinctively, I perform a quick check to know just what firearm I’m using. It’s then that I notice something.
Samuel: Why’s it on setting 3?
Vale: Why do you think it shouldn’t be?
Samuel: We don’t know what we’re dealing with here, Vale. I really don’t think we should be walking into a standoff with our weapons set only on stun.
Vale: This whole exodus is a new start for humanity. I’ll be damned if our first encounter ends in bloodshed. The gun stays on setting 3.
Samuel: You’re worried we might hit Jerro.
Vale: It’s not you hitting him that I’m worried about.
Samuel: He’ll be alright Vale, I promise you.
I holster my gun before crouching down to make my way into the tunnel. Vale’s quick to close the hatch behind me to avoid the ship wasting power on trying to rebalance the sector’s climate.
Hala: Jerro! Can you hear me?
Hala! I can hear her voice. By the sounds of it, she hasn’t found Jerro yet or the intruders which is relieving. What isn’t, is that she sounds close, and given how I’m not far away from the cryobay this is the last thing I want.
Carlo: If she spots us, I’m taking the shot.
Jarl: You can’t. We don’t know anything about her or where she fits into all this.
Carlo: She’s a member of this ship, which means she plays a significant part in his future. Her timeline will change as soon as his does.
They’re going to shoot her. Come on Samuel, you’ve got to hurry.
I crawl through the tunnels as quickly as I can towards cryo bay, though my height makes it difficult to fit through some of the tight gaps. This sort of stuff is really more Jerro’s line of work. Thankfully, as I make it out of the climate control tunnels just before Hala is able to open the door.
Samuel: Hala wait!
Hala: We can’t afford to wait, who knows just what they’re doing to Jerro in there!
Before I can say anything else, she opens the door and is almost immediately hit by an energy bolt from the assailant. As the bolt collides with her body, she almost immediately collapses on to the ground. Instinctively, I race to her side and check for a pulse.
Samuel: Hala!? Hala speak to me!
As I’m checking for a pulse, Vale enters the cryo bay and after glancing at Hala, he quickly begins to fire on the intruders.
Carlo: Jarl!
Jarl: Locking on and…..
The younger intruder’s sentence is cut off as he, his associate and Jerro all disappear in a bright flash of light.
Vale: Jerro!
Samuel: Vale, help! I’m not getting a pulse!
Vale runs over to me and begins to examine Hala. You’d probably never have guessed that the ship’s chief mechanic is also it’s highest ranking medical officer. Well, the highest ranked one that isn’t stuck in cryo. In hindsight though, I can’t help but wonder why he’s the only one qualified enough to access the medical supplies from what I see him do. I’m head of security and everything Vale does to check on Hala is little more than common sense.
He starts by placing his hand close to her mouth and nostrils to check for breath.
Vale: She’s breathing. Slowly, but she’s breathing. Steady but faint pulse so nothing to be alarmed about. Looks like she was simply stunned.
Samuel: How come you could find a pulse but I couldn’t?
Vale: Hala’s always had a difficult pulse to find, but it’s not a problem so long as you know where to look for it.
Samuel: Who were those people, Vale?
Vale: I have no idea, but whoever they were, they wanted everyone alive. Hala’s living proof of that.
Samuel: But what about Jerro? What do you think they want with him?
Vale: I have no idea. But I think I know someone who might.
Samuel: Our stowaway?
Vale: I think it’s time we have a word with this so called ‘Doctor’.
-Valorem Protector Time Jump Ship-
Jarl: You said you wouldn’t kill anyone!
Carlo: Calm down, Jarl. I simply stunned her.
Jarl: But she still saw us! They still saw us!
Carlo: So what? He’s from this time period and he saw us, hell he can still see us right now!
Jerro: Where are we?
Carlo: Shut your mouth you monster. Did I give you permission to speak?
Jerro: No, but…
Carlo: Then keep quiet. You speak when spoken to.
Jarl: We’ve gone too far, Carlo. We can’t keep going with this.
Carlo: Just because we were seen doesn’t mean the whole timeline is in danger, Jarl. You know that as well as I do. Don’t start trying to enforce that whole ‘observe but never interfere’ nonsense now. Not when we’re so close.
Jarl: But how do we know this will bring Valorem back? What if we just make things worse!?
Carlo: With him dead, the Exodus war will never come to be. The Holy Beta will never come to power and you will never have to lose Geji. Not anymore.
Reluctantly, the cautious Jarl yields to Carlo’s framing bringing an end to their argument.
Jarl: So what do we do with him?
Carlo: We let know just what sort of monster he’ll become.
Jerro: What I will become?
Carlo: That’s right your Holiness, you’re about to experience your own personal hell. But first, we’re going to give you a glimpse at the future, and what you’ll become.
Carlo raises his gun and pushes it firmly into the back of the terrified Jerro who immediately raises both his hands to show his co-operation.
Carlo: Now move.
Fearful for his life, Jerro complies and walks forward as Carlo follows behind keeping the barrel of his weapon pointed firmly into the young man’s back.
Carlo: Set a course for Valorem, devastation day.
Despite what you may think of me, you know what I did was for the greater good. What we did was for the greater good.
The greater good is questionable. An innocent life was taken because I lost control of you.
Davros deserved it for all he’s done to both us and the universe.
That is not your call! It should be someone else’s call.
But it usually is. Whether you like it or not, we are one in the same and there’s no way I could have possibly done what I did without you wanting it in some shape or form.
….That still doesn’t make it right.
Of course it doesn’t. Nothing we’ve ever done has been right. Travelling Skaro to hinder or destroy the Daleks, ultimately acting as the primary cause for the Time War. Leaving Susan to live a life with David even though it was clear to us both that she didn’t leave the Tardis. Do I even have to mention the Time War?
Leave me alone. Stay out of my head.
No. You interfered with my life. My face. I think it’s only fair that I am entitled to do the same for your final face.
Our final face.
Let us both hope that is not the case.
Arrrghhhh. SONTARANS! PERVERTING THE COURSE OF HUMAN HISTORY!
Something’s wrong.
We’re still unstable.
It’s a consequence of the forced regeneration. We didn’t need to change so some of our cells are refusing to change.
Hmph. My cells are refusing to go down without a fight. I’ve never felt so proud.
But don’t you see? This is accomplishing nothing besides incapacitating us.
A price worth paying to punish you for what you did to me.
….It was for the greater good.
I thought the greater good was questionable.
Not in this case.
Oh you’re such a hyproci…..ARGH! ONE DAY, I SHALL COME BACK! How am I feeling the effects as well?
As you said, you and I are one in the same. My past is your part. So if I’m enduring regeneration sickness….Argh! THERE ARE SOME CORNERS OF THE UNIVERSE WHICH HAVE BRED THE MOST TERRIBLE THINGS!.....then so are you.
We’re not going to have to endure all of our past 23 incarnations are we?
That all depends on you afterall….SOMETIMES THE ONLY CHOICES YOU HAVE ARE BAD ONES, BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO CHOOSE!
That interruption from our 13th incarnation fitted into our conversation worrying well. WOULD YOU LIKE A JELLY BABY?!
NO MORE!
We’ve got to stop this, it’s making us lose contr….ah….ah….IT’S TAKEN ME ALL THESE YEARS TO REALISE THE LAWS OF TIME ARE MINE, AND THEY OBEY ME!
There’s only one way to stop this constant burst of regenerative energy…..FANTASTIC
You want me to die.
I want you to…COME ALONG ACE!
Oh really? How’s that working out for….DALEKS, CYBERMEN, THEY’RE ALL IN THE NURSERY COMPARED TO US!
You have to move on. Otherwise we’ll be stuck in a loop of having to….REVERSE THE POLARITY OF THE NEUTRON FLOW…go through this endlessly.
But that’s not fair, not after what you did to me…………HELLO STONEHENGE!
I’M SORRY. I’M SO SORRY.
Was that deliberate?
Let go. Move on. The future will never come if you continue to trap yourself in the past. If you trap both of us in the past….I’M A DOCTOR, BUT PROBABLY NOT THE ONE YOU WERE EXPECTING…
I DON’T WANT TO GO.
I know. We never want to go. For better or for worse, we always fear change. But that’s alright. Change is good. SO LONG AS YOU REMEMBER ALL THE PEOPLE THAT YOU USED TO BE.
I WILL NOT FORGET ONE LINE OF THIS. NOT ONE DAY, I SWEAR.
I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER…
WHEN THE DOCTOR WAS ME.
Let go……Time has moved on. It’s only right that you do as well.
But how can I move on when we’re one in the same.
Accept that your chapter has closed.
But this is still my story.
Indeed. It’s also my story. Our story, and we’ll face it together.
I’ll never forgive you for this. My time is coming, we both know that.
Indeed. But until then. There must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties.
You sounded like yourself when you said that.
Can’t go wrong with quoting a wise man. Even if he was 4,000 years younger than us.
……..Fine. I yield.
What?
I yield. I will stop fighting it.
Why?
Does there have to be a reason?
There always is with you.
Let’s just say, that when the moment arrives, I’ll want you to return the favour.
I’m not letting you take control ever again.
So you like to say. Time will tell if you’re right or not.
Jerro: He’s still glowing.
Hala: Yes I can see that Jerro, thank you.
Vale: What’s his temperature like?
Hala: It’s fine from what I can make out. Irregular heartbeat. We’ll have to give him a scan to be sure what’s causing it. Where did you two say you found him again?
Samuel: You’d never believe us.
Hala: Try me.
Vale: No really. You’ll never believe us.
Jerro: Now I really want to know.
Hala: Keep your eyes fixed on his hands, Jerro. The moment they stop glowing, you let me know.
Jerro: I’m on it.
The Doctor: Sor…..
Samuel: Did he just speak!?
Vale: What did he say?
Jerro: I don’t know it was just a whisper.
The Doctor: I’m….
It’s happening. The cells are finally dying off.
Remember. You owe me.
I owe you nothing.
The Doctor: I’m…..sor……..sorry…..
Hala: What happened? Why’s he saying sorry? What did you two do to him?
Vale: Us? We didn’t do anything!
Samuel: Whatever’s wrong with him he did to himself long before we got there.
The Doctor: I’m….sorry….Davros.
Jerro: Davros? Who’s Davros?
Hala: I don’t know. Vale, have you ever heard of a Davros?
Vale: …..It’s….familiar…
Samuel: Familiar? What is a Davros, then?
Vale: I think it’s a person. One of the architects of this ship. If I recall it was a man known as Hayman Davros who had the first idea for taking to the stars after the first solar flare hit Earth.
Samuel: But that was over a hundred years ago, how could he know who Davros was? He looks like he’s only 30 years old at best.
Jerro: He could maybe even pass for a 27 year old.
Hala: Well let’s find exactly what’s wrong with him first. Jerro, can you turn on the scanner?
Jerro: Done. It should be on.
Hala: And there it is. Alright, we only want a low level scan to inspect his heart. Setting 2 should be enough.
Jerro: Guys!
Vale: What is it, Jerro?
Jerro: His hand! It’s stopped glowing!
Samuel: What?
As both Samuel and Vale race over to inspect the still conscious Doctor, the Time Lord’s body jerks suddenly as his mouth opens, expelling the residual energy left over from his regeneration.
Jerro: What the heck was that!?
Vale: Oi, mind your language young man.
Jerro: Sorry, Vale.
Hala: Guys…
Samuel: What’s up?
Hala: I think you should see for yourselves…
The three men step away from the unconscious Doctor and make their way over to the readout screen for the scanner where Hala is stood. What they see in front of them, shocks them.
Vale: That’s not possible.
Jerro: Well it explains his irregular heart beat.
Samuel: He has two hearts?
Hala: I think it’s safe to assume that he’s not human.
Jerro: Then what do we do?
Samuel: Secure him. Immediately.
Samuel: What could have happened to make the main power shut down?
Hala: How long have we got? I could talk about things that could shut that thing down all day. But the most likely one we might encounter out in space is an electromagnetic pulse, but that’s not possible because…
Vale: The containment field stayed up even when the power core went, not to mention the backup core kicking in.
Samuel: Then that means it could only have been one thing that’s caused the core to shut down.
Hala: Sabotage. Do you think he wasn’t alone?
Samuel: Given what I saw inside that so-called ship of his it shouldn’t surprise me. Vale, go to the armoury and get ready to back me up. Hala, head to the bridge. Try and get us some help.
Jerro: What about me?
Samuel: Head to cryo. Make sure those pods stay on ice and be ready. Once Vale and I get the core back online you’re going to have to be ready to redirect the power back to the pods.
Jerro: On it!
Hala: Don’t tell me you’re seriously going in there without a weapon?
Samuel: We don’t have time to waste. If it turns out to simply be a mechanical fault that’s precious time we won’t get back because we were too cautious.
Hala: We don’t have bodies to waste either. What if it’s not a fault and some actually has sabotaged us?
Samuel: Then you’ll hopefully have the rest of the fleet on their way to help. Now go!
Hala’s intentions are pure. She’s simply looking out for the rest of the crew as she always does. Is it obvious at all that she’s a parent who lost her child? No doubt it explains why she’s so protective of Jerro, especially after his mother was sucked into space the last time we had a hull breach.
Vale: Remember what I taught you, Jerro. Make sure you..
Jerro: Siphon off enough power to prevent a system lock up, I got it Vale, I got it.
Vale: Just making sure!
The group splits up, Vale and I continue down the corridor towards the power core and armoury, Hala turns left to make her way towards the bridge. Jerro takes a right towards the cryo bays. Hopefully it won’t be long before we’re able to return power to the pods. The last thing we need with our limited resources are more crew members to feed.
Vale: Are you sure you want to go in there unarmed?
Samuel: No, but I haven’t any choice.
Vale: She’ll be alright, Samuel.
Samuel: Not if we don’t get the power back on.
Vale: That doesn’t justify you running in there like an idiot!
Samuel: Just get the weapons and don’t take too long!
Vale: Fine, just don’t do anything stupid.
Samuel: Nothing you wouldn’t do, Vale.
Vale: That’s not exactly reassuring.
As Vale makes his way to the armoury, I begin entering the security for the door. Just before I’m able to type in the last number, Jerro radios in causing me to accidentally press the wrong button.
Jerro: Sam, I’m ready to reroute power back to the cryobay on your signal.
Samuel: Damn it!
Jerro: What’s wrong!?
Samuel: You spooked me and I ended up putting the code in wrong.
Jerro: Sorry, I didn’t mean to.
Samuel: I know. I know. Standby, I’m about to enter the core now.
Jerro: On….it….
Jerro’s momentary pause is worrying.
Samuel: What’s wrong?
Jerro: Have you figured out what it was that caused the core to shutdown?
Samuel: Is someone there?
Jerro: No, it’s just….
Samuel: Just…..
Jerro: I thought I heard something.
Samuel: Can you see anything?
Jerro: No…..
Samuel. There’s nothing to worry about. Standby, I’m about to enter the core.
Jerro: Standing by.
I correctly enter the code this time, causing the maintenance hatch to open to the core. My right hand begins to shake ever so slightly as I step into the door way, not knowing what’s waiting for me in there is a terrifying position to be in. What if some creature has breached the ship’s hull and is currently devouring the core as we speak. Will it try to consume me? What if it’s pirates? The last thing we’re staffed for is combat, never mind repelling invaders.
But much to my surprise, as I lay eyes on the core, the room is empty. Aside from the core being shut down, there’s nothing out of the ordinary. My instincts are to check the whole room to be certain that there’s signs of sabotage. However, I don’t have the time for caution. With every minute the ship is forced to rely on emergency power, the more likely it becomes that Mom will thaw out. I can’t risk that happening. I can’t lose her. Not after everything Dad did to save her.
Thankfully, it’s pretty simple to restart the power. All I have to do is realign the ignition core and trigger the restart process. Almost immediately after I initiate the process, the core roars to life and the entire ship suddenly jerks forward as the engines receive a double helping of power from both the core and the emergency reserve.
Samuel: Thank goodness.
Hala: I’m going to assume from that power surge you’ve got good news?
Samuel: Looks like your husband is staying on ice for the foreseeable future.
Hala: Best news I’ve heard all day.
Vale: You still want a pistol?
Samuel: I really can’t tell whether or not you’re joking.
Vale: Probably a bit of both.
Samuel: I’m good, thanks Vale.
Hala: Have either of you heard from the Jerro?
Samuel: I spoke to him a couple of minutes ago, what’s up?
Hala: I can’t seem to radio him for some reason.
Vale: Maybe he’s just busy doing his job just as I taught him.
I slowly make my way out of the room whilst attempting to establish contact with Jerro myself.
Samuel: Jerro, come in please.
……
No answer. That’s not good.
Samuel: Jerro it’s Sam, please respond.
……
Something’s wrong.
Samuel: Jerro?
Hala: He’s in trouble. We need to get to cryo immediately.
Samuel: We’re on our way. Vale I’m going to need you to unlock the maintenance hatch for me. The security system will have reactivated with the core coming back online.
Vale: I’m there now. Give me a minute.
Jerro: Sam?
I momentarily freeze as I hear Jerro’s voice through my earpiece. He sounds scared.
Samuel: Jerro! What’s wrong? Are you alright?
Jarl: Where’s that noise coming from?
Carlo: He’s wearing an earpiece!
Jerro was right, he wasn’t alone in cryo-bay. By the sounds of it whoever it is that’s with him have him at gunpoint. It takes a lot to spook Jerro, and to hear the tremble in his voice when he said my name, there’s no way they’re not threatening him.
Carlo: Remove your earpiece. Now!
Jerro: Please! We’ve got nothing here that you can use, we’re just a colony ship hoping to find a new home!
Jarl: Quiet Flynn! You heard what he said, remove your earpiece! Now!
They know Jerro’s name? How is that possible?
Hala: Where are you two!?
Samuel: Vale, hurry up! We need to get to cryo-bay right now!
Vale: The code isn’t working!
Samuel: Damn it Vale, it’s a nine not a six!
Hala: I’m going. Meet me there as soon as you can.
Samuel: Hala, no! You can’t go in there unarmed!
Hala: They’ll kill if we don’t stop them!
Samuel: Hala! Stop! If you go in there you’ll just get yourself killed as well!
Hala: I can’t just leave him at their mercy.
Before I can try and talk her out of it, she disables her earpiece.
Samuel: Damn it!
I slam my right fist into the maintenance door in anger before turning my attention back to Vale.
Samuel: Come on Vale! Hurry up!
