Artisans painstakingly repair the medieval tile work on the roof of the Registan in Samarkand.

The importance of tilework in Persian architecture arises from two important factors; first the need to weatherproof the simple clay bricks used in construction, and secondly the need to ornament the buildings. The colours used were blue, yellow, turquoise, pink, aubergine and green.

This fine example of tilework is found on this storefront on Market St., Kingston, PA.

To me, this appears to be of the Art-Deco Style.

Though it still looks good, the original work extended for a longer distance into an alcove. The store's dimensions were changed, eliminating the alcove, and resultantly, the full effect of this tilework.

A lot of the Mosaic tilework found in public places, churches, palaces and monuments are of the blue-and white variety, which became popular in the second half of the 17th century. The Spanish artist Gabriel del Barco Y Minusca introduced into Portugal the blue-and-white tiles from Delft in the Netherlands.
