My ticket bought in Spillers Record Store (Cardiff) for one of the few 'Anarchy' gigs to survive after the ITV Grundy interview. Swapped with Eddie Lock for a signed Jamie Reid 'God Save the Queen' screenprint (17/200) I'm sorry to inform anyone wishing to aquire this item.

For once, I'll start off with the photo, and then move to the rest of the ramblings. This is from the Kumbh Mela. From the epitome of Kumbhness. From the mighty Ganga arti. I'm standing in the middle of a swarm of humanity eagerly awaiting the beginning of the worship of the Ganga. The man in the photo is a collector of donations. Donations that buy the heavy fuel for the gigantic fires. The gigantic fires which are held aloft by the many priests. The many priests who, the devotees think, will complete the cleansing of their sins. Donations to keep this farce alive. And in return, the donor receives a slip of paper. A ticket. To heaven.

Thursday, last week. Hard Rock Cafe, Bombay. Dire Straits tribute concert. Bruce Lee Mani starts the concert in the background, picking the guitar to perfection. Picking it so well, Mark Knopfler would've been proud.

The first song is overshadowed by the pimped up Mihir (from a band whose name I wouldn't bother finding out). Mr. Mihir is decked out in a suit (of sorts), dark glasses (if I remember correctly) and his very own LED lit, erm, stick. Yes. A stick. To wave around all over the stage. And to air guitar during the guitar solos (instead of shutting up and letting the guitarist take the limelight for a few moments). He's got his voice going pretty well for him, I'll give him that. And the accent too. And that is the reason the songs he sang were forgettable. Who wants to hear covers done the same way as the original!?

And then came the time of Bruce Lee Mani. Second song. His voice hits our ears. Deep, soulful, and totally not wannabe Dire Straits. He does his thing with the lyrics, messes them up when needed. The highlight of the show.

A shared highlight though. Because next up on the vocals is Aditi Singh Sharma. A true rockstar, if this concert is to be taken as my lone source of information. She sets the stage on fire. Yes, Dire Straits could've had a female vocalist! And she makes me love the only song of Dire Straits that I haven't adored till date (Twisting by the Pool). And boy, can she twist.

The fourth vocalist, Ashu, is comparatively a disappointment, 'cause we never realise when he gets onto stage and when he leaves. A voice and accent that matches Dire Straits, he suffers from the same issues as Mihir in terms of vocals. Concerts cannot be appreciated if they sound like the record itself.

Fortunately, the organizers have ensured that the bulk of the songs are sung by Bruce Lee Mani and Aditi Singh Sharma, and they do justice to Dire Straits.

The accompanying band members from Thermal And A Quarter are tight, and keep the sound of Dire Straits alive, steady and let the vocalists do the rest. And of course, there's Naveen from Galeej Gurus, who, except for his guitaring, reminds me of a Gult wedding musician, what with the sideward head twists, the grin, the suit and the french beard.

The show ends with Mihir and his blue LED lit stick back on stage and the musicians bid a perfect goodbye with an excellent rendering of Sultans of Swing. Around this time I realise I've written a pretty bland review here. And it's going nowhere. So, as I've done in the past, I decide to stop. Right now. Yes.

This ticket is cut by the conductor at the price it costs - in this case 6.50 baht. The ticket is about the size of my thumb nail! So antiquated and time consuming: it should have been scrapped years ago. We are in the DIGITAL age!

But new buses and systems are coming......in a few.. ...more.... .years!
