All the photos I present were taken in the town of Taormina;

I made photos related to "street photography";

I photographed people who, for the most part, I had never met before, performing their portraits, I thank them for their sympathy and availability;

The volcano Etna, in recent days has shown an intense eruptive activity, I photographed that spectacular eruptions from Taormina;

I tried to capture minimal photographic stories, collected walking down the street .. ... in search of fleeting moments ...

For some photographs I used a particular photographic technique at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production.

Tutte le foto che presento sono state realizzate nella cittadina di Taormina;

ho realizzato foto riconducibili alla “street photography”;

ho fotografato persone che, per la maggior parte, non avevo incontrato prima, eseguendo dei loro ritratti, le ringrazio per la loro simpatia e disponibilità;

il vulcano Etna, nei giorni scorsi ha mostrato una intensa attività eruttiva, anche con intensi fenomeni chiamati "fontane di lava", emissioni a getto continuo perdurate intensamente per molti minuti, di altissime "fontane" di magma incandescente, molto spettacolari e non comuni, le fotografie dell'Etna sono state realizzate da Taormina;

Liposcelis bostrychophila

Liposcelis are spread worldwide, and 99.9% are female. They reproduce asexual - no need for males (parthenogenetic). Thus, from a genetic point of view, they are identical.

The right one is still in a nymph stadium, while the left (twin-) sister is adult.

Just across the river Irwell (bottom of the picture) is the Greengate area of the City of Salford; I took this picture from the Manchester side of the river. An estimated £950 million of investment was planned for building work between 2016 and 2020 with a further £900 million between 2020 and 2026. The Greengate area sits in the heart of Salford where the vision for the future, as far ahead as 2040, is for it to become a distinctive place to live, work and to attract visitors. These building sit on the site of the old Manchester Exchange Railway Station; even thought it was in Salford. From 16 April 1929, Exchange Station had a platform link to the adjacent Victoria Station, (which is still in use today and is in Manchester), thus creating Europe's longest platform at 2,238 feet (682 m); it could accommodate three trains at once.

Five minutes before I took this I was asked to stop taking pictures of the two buildings centre and right, by security. I asked why and was told I was standing on private land. I was on the bridge to the right of the image, so I stepped off the bridge onto Victoria Street and took this picture. Now standing on public land in Manchester I can now take a picture legally; how stupid is that?

Yeliu is a cape of about 1,700 meters long formed by Datun Mountain reaching into the sea. When overlooked from above, the place is like a giant turtle submerging into the sea. Thus, it is also called "Yeliu Turtle". Because the rock layer of seashore contains sandstone of limestone texture and it is subject to sea erosion, weathering and earth movements, there is particular scenery consisting of sea trenches/holes, candle shaped rocks, and pot shaped rocks.

20-March-2025

The Tamar former glacial circle valley does not see the sun from October to early March due to the over 1000m rocky wall, which, to the south, connects the Mojstrovka-Travnik chain with the Jalovec, constituting an obstacle, in addition to the sun, also to the mild Mediterranean southern currents; so, the presence of a vast glacier that shaped the valley during the last Ice Age is thus explained, exactly as for the other Julian cirques.

Here we are near the springs called "Črne vode" (Black Waters) at just under 1300m a.s.l. altitude, but the sparse and prostrate vegetation (from the weight of the snow, also the result of frequent avalanches), the mountain pines and the rock all around make one believe that we are at a higher altitude.

The Tamar Valley continues, slightly lower, a few more kilometers, bending towards the southwest (in the direction of the sun), ending up "hitting" the bastions of Mount Jalovec.

This mountain massif is geographically and climatically very important as it is located at the crossroads of three valleys and is part of the watershed between the Adriatic and the Black Sea catchments: so, in addition to the Danube catchment/basin Tamar valley, the Adriatic catchment valleys Koritnica and Trenta also reach it.

It is also the main mountain of three mountain ranges that branch off from it, namely the Mojstrovke-Travnik mountain chain, on the left of the photo, the Ponce/Ponze, along the Italian border, which continue with the Spiče on the right, and the long chain of the Pelc mountains, up to the Bavski Grintavec, towards the south.

Valentine, Texas

This is an art installation just outside of Valentine, Texas by the artists Elmgreen and Dragset. The store never opens but contains actual Prada merchandise. The idea was to let it decay naturally, however it has been vandalized, and thus restored, a couple of times.

West Texas is one of the most beautiful and interesting places I've visited. Can't wait to return.

Culzean Castle is a castle overlooking the Firth of Clyde, near Maybole, on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland. It is the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa, the chief of Clan Kennedy. In 1945, the Kennedy family gave the castle and its grounds to the National Trust for Scotland (thus avoiding inheritance tax). In doing so, they stipulated that the apartment at the top of the castle be given to General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower in recognition of his role as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during the Second World War. The General first visited Culzean Castle in 1946 and stayed there four times, including once while President of the United States of America.

Thanks to the legacy of the banker Pau Gil, the first stone of the new hospital was laid on January 15, 1902. The old name of Santa Creu was added to Sant Pau to respect the will of its benefactor. Thus, in 1930 the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau was inaugurated. The architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1850-1923) was in charge of this project, which became the most important civil building of Catalan modernism.

Located on the northwest edge of the Werler or Höveler County, Westerwinkel was together with Stockum a lonely outpost on the edge of the area of interest of Münster .

The strategic importance of the location is thus likely to be reciprocal to the number of sources received, which makes the existence of a fortification during this period probable but unassignable for the entire period of the existence of the counties Werl and Hövel. This is all the more true, as no building substance has been preserved from the original castle complex and no one can say what the castle complex originally looked like. At the time of the Werler rule but in any case existed already today belonging to Ascheberg village Herbern, in the immediate vicinity

Westerwinkel is (Herbern is historically first mentioned in 889 in the books of the monastery Werden an der Ruhr [1] ). For his owner, the need must have existed to secure this property on the northwest edge of the county against possible invaders. In addition, Herbern was on the old trade route Münster - Dortmund - Cologne, today's B54, which led by Herbern, which underlines the strategic importance of the place.

No they're Minerals! Jesus Marie!

IAIS 153 and 152 fly down the former Rock Island mainline in Mineral Illinois with a short SIBU turn on their way back home to Silvis. Definitely didn't start the day thinking I would be shooting SD38s. But with some helpful heads up and being relatively close, I was lucky enough to have a chance to catch these brutes. Big thanks to all those who helped me along the way. Unfortunately, as quickly as they appeared, this pair found it's way back into storage only a couple of days later.

This was the first time I've explored this part of Illinois and the Iowa Interstate. One thing I wasn't expecting while out here was a canal! West of Bureau Jct to Colona, the former Rock Island main closely follows the Hennepin Canal (officially known as the Mississippi and Illinois Canal).

The idea for a canal was first conceived in 1834 as a way to create a quick water route between Chicago and the Mississippi River. This involved digging a 105 mile long trench between Hennepin on the Illinois River, and Colona on the Rock River. However, getting support and funding for construction was a hard fought battle. Thus, the canal wasn't completed until 1907; quite late in the canal era which had been surpassed by railroads as the primary mode of transport decades earlier. Additionally, due to the small lock size, the canal was thought to be obsolete even before it was finished.

Despite that, the canal operated until 1951 when the Army Corps of Engineers suspended all lock operations. Today, the canal is a recreational waterway and the tow path is popular for hiking, biking, and on this day in particular, snowmobiling.

Happy 2026 everyone.

I have always seemed to enjoy New Year's Day more than New Year's Eve. It is a day of fresh starts (or in some years, fresh adventures). A good day for housecleaning and organizing and getting yourself set up for the year ahead. And thus I put some time into catching up a bit on some recent photos I have made, scanned, but not finished up.

This landscape came from about a month or so ago. One of our customers at Blue Moon Camera does a lot of 3D printing and made a 4x5 pinhole camera that needed testing. In form and function it reminds me quite a bit of the Harman Titan, just without the interchangeable cone. Naturally I was more than happy to give it some field testing. It has been a long while since I shot much 4x5, procuring the Hasselblad Flexbody largely scratched that itch. So I decided to take it on the scramble out to Upper Bridal Veil Falls - a waterfall I had not visited in roughly 10 years. Where does the time go?

I don't have a ton to say about it honestly. It is a pretty straightforward and simple camera. A pinhole camera really doesn't need to do a lot. Jody, the camera designer, saw fit to put a nice pinhole in it, so combined with the large film size, this camera makes pretty great images. He loaned me two versions: one with an 85mm focal length and an even wider model with a 65mm focal length. This image was made with the wider of the two cameras.

Another image of the Chat, because I am so delighted it has thus far survived the winter and I got to photograph it .

As noted on my last post i saw the Chat as it came in to feed. It has always been very wary and I was reluctant to move from my sitting position- but I did as there were many branches between me and the bird and I was shooting between the them . As a result i got a much better view. The blue background is caused by the river flowing below the bank on which i was standing. Luckily the bird was not spooked and stayed awhile

It is now four days later and we have had two heavy snowfalls and it was bitterly cold last night at minus 4 - I sure hope it is still with us. A fitting image to celebrate World Wildlife Day

When I was working on this it reminded my of those DNA coding trays thus the title. Base image created using a Canon PowerShot camera and processed using Photoshop, and Redfield filters.

Norman and his crew getting ready to work repairing the soffits of this sprawling, 92-unit, senior housing complex in Ukiah, called, appropriately, Autumn Leaves. What better time than mid-autumn.

Fun fact: I once applied for subsidized housing at this complex. Eventually, however, I was able to continue renting the house I was living in.

Contractor Norman Hudson called me on February 18, 2021 to tell me he was in line to get the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. He died two days later, at 77 years of age. He thus fulfilled his often-expressed desire never to retire.

The sturdy steelwork of the DM&IR bridge over Crawford Creek feels the weight of a loaded natural ore train. This train was loaded at the Auburn Mine along the DM&IR and was destined for the blast furnaces of U.S. Steel's Gary Works in Indiana.

In early 1994 mining of natural ore began again at the dormant Auburn Mine, one of the last known pits of natural iron ore on the Mesabi Range, near Virginia. The primary recipient of this ore was US Steel's Gary Works. Initially the ore was to be shipped through the DM&IR ore docks and lake vessel. However, the moisture content of the unscreened ore made it sticky and dumping at the dock was difficult. So, in October 1994, managers opted to move the ore in all-rail trains using DM&IR cars and via a DM&IR-WC-EJ&E routing.

Originally slated to be only 4 trains, then upped to 10, it ended up being a total of 20 that year. The following year, August 1995, Auburn all-rail trains started up again with 35 trains operated up to mid-October. In 1996, a drying/screening plant was built at the Auburn Mine to solve the moisture problems and dock/boat shipments resumed as originally intended, thus ending the movement of natural ore over the WC. WC symbols for these trains were EJELD for loaded trains and EJEEM for empty movements.

The above info was pirated from my WC book Volume 2 and was co-written with my friend Brian Buchanan who worked in the WC marketing/traffic department.

Small "true" bug, about 4-5mm

The tip of the forewing of Heteroptera is fairly thick (~1.2 microns), thus there is no color iridescence visible (brown curve). The base is even thicker and leathary. This is the origin of the name "hemiptera" which means "half-winged". The newer name Heteroptera means also "mixed-wings". This leads to the typical "X" structure of the closed wings in dorsal view, which is an easy means to identify "true" bugs.

Hind wings in contrast, are much thinner (~0.2 microns here), which leads to a brillant blue-violett if illuminated coaxially.

Forewings are shown here

Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Mexico and Central America. A member of the Compositae (also called Asteraceae) family of dicotyledonous plants, its garden relatives thus include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum, and zinnia. There are 42 species of dahlia, with hybrids commonly grown as garden plants. Flower forms are variable, with one head per stem; these can be as small as 5 cm (2 in) diameter or up to 30 cm (1 ft) ("dinner plate"). This great variety results from dahlias being octoploids—that is, they have eight sets of homologous chromosomes, whereas most plants have only two. In addition, dahlias also contain many transposons—genetic pieces that move from place to place upon an allele—which contributes to their manifesting such great diversity.

The dahlia was declared the national flower of Mexico in 1963. The tubers were grown as a food crop by the Aztecs, but this use largely died out after the Spanish Conquest. Attempts to introduce the tubers as a food crop in Europe were unsuccessful.

Hammer mill mentioned first time 1693. Up to 1874 owned by the Beinwil monastery, when it was bought by Ankli family. The mill was in daily use up to 1975. Electricity came relatively late to the Lüssel valley, thus economical to forge by water power.

The only insects strong enough to obtain nectar from, and thus to pollinate the Bottle gentian are strong bees such as Bumble bees.

Tide was low at sundown on Lone Ranch Beach, thus many rocks and much sea life was exposed. In the distance, a figure stood on the sea stacks at the base of Cape Ferrelo.

This beautiful area has a troubled history. Cape Ferrelo was named after a Spanish Explorer of the area in 1592 when Spain was seeking control. The beach was named after an early settler who established a ranch here and had conflict with the natives. The inhabitants before the arrival of Europeans were the Chetco. The Chetco lived in villages here and harvested the bounty of sea life. The Chetco were massacred in the mid 1850's, and the survivors were forced to move the Siletz Reservation a couple hundred miles north. The Chetco are now part of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians although they have maintained strong cultural ties to the area. Minerals were found here and the US Borax Company did some mining in 1890's and 1960's. The company is currently engaged in controversial development of a thousand residential units and a commercial area. It's controversial as a result of possible degradation of rare plants and archeological sites. When we visited, we were unaware of the history and found the rugged beauty of the beach and the cape amazing.

Happy Slider Sunday!

"Macro Mondays" and "carbon"

Pyrolytic carbon is pure carbon, but forming mosaic crystals. Thus, it shows strong diamagnetism, so that a small magnet (here: 5mm diameter) can levitate above a surface of pyrolytic carbon (there is one more "lifting"-magnet in the game, which is about 10cm above the scene and not shown here. Yet - to my knowledge- this is the simplest setup for (passive) levitation - no electronics, no external energy or control loop necessary!

The often-quoted Earnshaw theorem (which forbids stable magnetostatic levitation configurations) does not apply here, since this theorem does not take diamagnetism into account.

Later on, german physicist Werner Braunbeck extended Earnshaws theorem, showing that materials with magnetic permeability less than one (like pyrolytic graphite, bismuth, copper etc.) allow for stable configurations. This photo is one example for such a setup.

The Common Cuckoo shows two adult plumage morphs—adult male plumage is grey and adult females are either grey or, less frequently, rufous.

The situation is less clear in juveniles, as both sexes exhibit variable proportions of grey and rufous colour. We thus describe the patterns related to sex-specific plumage colour variation in a central European Cuckoo population.

This museum of arts and history, opened on April 9, 1920, brings together the various collections of Raoul Warocqué, the last owner of Mariemont, which he bequeathed on his death (1917) to the Belgian State, with all the domain of Mariemont. The Royal Museum of Mariemont has also been the Scientific Establishment of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation since 1981, and thus the official Museum of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

Beyond the missions included in the definition of a museum by ICOM, the Royal Museum of Mariemont aims to organize a wide variety of events: prestigious or more specialized exhibitions, publications, research, excavations, conferences, etc. . It preserves the heritage and pursues in particular, in this respect, an acquisition policy. The dissemination and democratization of culture remains one of the priorities of the museum, which is why several activities are organized for the benefit of many vulnerable audiences, in particular in collaboration with the Public Centers for Social Assistance.

Harpa's lighting is a central element of the concert hall and was developed in close collaboration with the artist Ólafur Elíasson. The facade is made of dichroic glass, which creates different colors and reflections depending on the light and time of day, thus establishing a reference to Icelandic nature. Inside, specially designed LED lights create a kaleidoscopic effect of light and shadow, reminiscent of the Northern Lights.

The game of "Rapa" was once a very traditional Portuguese game, of Jewish origin, this game entertained many family evenings and children's games. With simple rules, all you need is a small four-sided top, which in Portugal was nicknamed "rapa", with the letters R, T, P, and D printed on each side, and a handful of beans, money, or whatever you want to play. Then you just have to turn the "rapa" and wait for your luck.

Around a table you start by deciding how many beans per player are placed in the middle of the table, and each player in turn rotates the "rapa". According to the letter that comes out performs the task, knowing that:

- R stands for "Rapa" getting all the beans placed in the center, thus starting another turn with new beans.

- T means "Take" taking away only one bean (or the previously stipulated amount).

- P stands for "Put", in which case you must put one or more beans into the pile of beans according to the stipulated amount.

- D means "Leave", everything stays as it was without taking away or putting away, passing the turn to the next partner.

And...have fun!

Nigritella miniata (Orchidaceae) 173 24

Nigritella miniata is a small plant in the Orchidaceae family.

Nigritella miniata is now considered to be rare, perhaps extremely rare in the western and central Alps and at its most frequent in the easterly massifs of Austria and the Carpathians.

Although variable, it typically has an inflorescence taller than it is wide, with individual flowers that are a little smaller and less open than its relatives.

Coloration in immature plants is a uniform crimson, but this uniformity is quickly lost and aging soon induces a lightening of the lower flowers, thus producing an inflorescence that grades upwards from pink to deep red.

The iris flower is an example of the relation between flowering plants and pollinating insects. The shape of the flower and the position of the pollen-receiving and stigmatic surfaces on the outer petals form a landing-stage for a flying insect, which in probing for nectar, will first come into contact with the perianth, then with the three stigmatic stamens in one whorled surface which is borne on an ovary formed of three carpels. Thus, an insect bearing pollen from one flower will, in entering a second, deposit the pollen on the stigma; in backing out of a flower, the pollen which it bears will not be rubbed off on the stigma of the same flower.

This Redish egret had found a small fish for a morning snack at the South Padre Island Birding Center. The weather thus far has been overcast more than sunny but the diffused light has made it easier to shoot.

The last train of the year worth mentioning...

EJ&E SD38-2 #656 leads L548 just south of Marissa, Illinois on CN's (ex-IC) St. Louis Subdivision, a shot I've wanted for years. In trail is quite the cornucopia of power, the last four of which were out-shopped by Quality Rail in Granite City, including GTW GP38-2 #5832, CN (IC) SD40-2 #6100, GTW GP9 #4920, CN C44-9W #2551, and CN ES44DC #2321. The train will run southeast to Du Quoin then turn north onto the Centralia Subdivision to reach its namesake.

Behind the train running to the right is the lead to the Prairie State Energy Campus generating station.

Thanks to WR for the train symbol and initial heads up.

One of my great hiking companions is having some shoulder problems, thus when he hikes, pain accompanies him frequently. Hiking is tough enough with out having to deal with injuries. The photograph above was from a hike we went on together in the Sol Duc forest. As I made my compositions of Canyon Creek Falls, Jason was downstream putting his sizable talents to work. He is always very diligent and thoughtful about making photographs. Watching others work helps me out.

I have found that when I am out with friends and family, that I have learned so much about the pace of photography. I used to be hurried. Not now and because of my attitude change, my own work has benefitted, or at least I think it has!
