Redstart (F) - Phoenicuros Phoenicuros

The common redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus), or often simply redstart, is a small passerine bird in the redstart genus Phoenicurus. Like its relatives, it was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family, (Turdidae), but is now known to be an Old World flycatcher (family Muscicapidae).

Common redstarts prefer open mature birch and oak woodland with a high horizontal visibility and low amounts of shrub and understorey especially where the trees are old enough to have holes suitable for its nest. They prefer to nest on the edge of woodland clearings. In Britain it occurs primarily in upland areas less affected by agricultural intensification, but further east in Europe also commonly in lowland areas, including parks and old gardens in urban areas. They nest in natural tree holes, so dead trees or those with dead limbs are beneficial to the species; nestboxes are sometimes used. A high cover of moss and lichen is also preferred. They also use mature open conifer woodland, particularly in the north of the breeding range. Management to thin out the trees is thus favoured.

In England, where it has declined by 55% in the past 25 years, the Forestry Commission offers grants under a scheme called England's Woodland Improvement Grant (EWIG); as does Natural Englands Environmental Stewardship Scheme. It is a very rare and irregular breeding bird in Ireland, with between one and five pairs breeding in most years, mainly in County Wicklow.

It is a summer visitor throughout most of Europe and western Asia (east to Lake Baikal), and also in northwest Africa in Morocco. It winters in central Africa and Arabia, south of the Sahara Desert but north of the Equator, from Senegal east to Yemen. It is widespread as a breeding bird in Great Britain, particularly in upland broadleaf woodlands and hedgerow trees, but in Ireland it is very local, and may not breed every year.

The males first arrive in early to mid April, often a few days in advance of the females. Five or six light blue eggs are laid during May, with a second brood in mid summer in the south of the breeding range. It departs for Africa between mid-August and early October. It often feeds like a flycatcher, making aerial sallies after passing insects, and most of its food consists of winged insects. The call is chat-like and the alarm a plaintive single note, wheet, like that of many other chats.

The male’s song is similar to that of the Robin, but never more than a prelude, since it has an unfinished, feeble ending.

Thanks to all who take the time to Comment/fav etc, It is always appreciated.

These guys are extremely shy and hide quite efficiently. This one was foraging under the yew tree and thus made me look through possible branches openings to find him. He sat for a moment, creating a photo opportunity, while brunches around created a lovely brush effect.

Thank you very much for all views, faves, and comments.

Monument Valley "Ndzisgaii in Navajo", meaning valley of the rocks, is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft (300 m) above the valley floor. It is located on the Arizona–Utah state line, near the Four Corners area. The valley lies within the territory of the Navajo Nation Reservation and is accessible from U.S. Highway 163.

Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best-known films and thus, in the words of critic Keith Phipps, "its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West.

HMM- the theme for today, 5/25, is handle and this one is probably my favorite of the 3-4 macros that i'll put up. the whole buttonhook is in the first comment box, hopefully along with a story :)

here's the story: sam levenson, who was a humorist, told of a little boy who was just learning to read and had never seen a question mark before. he had, however, seen one of these tools which were used to button up shoes, before the advent of laces. so he read it thusly:

where are you going, little buttonhook?

The Netherlands and thus also our Hortus have been caught up by really hot weather much like that in the Tropics. Not that I mind; I rather enjoy it... And Tropical Butterflies, escaped from their glass hothouse, are frivolous on flowers outside in the Garden. Here's a Julia Heliconian, Dryas iulia, nectaring on a Cutleaf Coneflower, Rudbeckia laciniata. These Heliconians - flamboyant as they are - vary slightly in their markings. You have to look very carefully, though. Those differences distinguish various subspecies. Which one this is, I don't know and - given the hot weather - I've no patience to try to look it up. So Dryas iulia will have to suffice...

The Marmore waterfall, in the province of Terni, in the Valnerina, has an overall height difference of 165 metres, over three jumps.

It is the highest in Europe of artificial origin, having been formed, in Roman times, with the modification of the course of the Velino river, which thus flows into the Nera, a tributary of the Tiber.

It is a very popular tourist destination, reachable in a couple of hours from Rome, by car.

Osborne Bull in Venez-Malaga

All it takes is a drive across Spain to see the legendary brandy advertisement that has become a symbol of Spanish culture both here at home and abroad.

The Osborne Bull is the black silhouette of bull that stands on hilltops and along the roadside in many – but not all – parts of Spain. It began as nothing more than an advertisement in 1956 when the Osborne Group set out to promote 'Veteran' brandy. An Andalucian artist by the name of Manolo Prieto suggested the bull and thus set a legend in motion. Spanish Tour 2018/19.

The Triangulum Galaxy (known as Messier 33 or NGC 598) is a beautiful large spiral galaxy in the constellation of Triangulum. It can be (barely) seen with the unaided eye as a faint small smudge only under a truly dark, transparent sky. It is thus one of the most distant objects visible to the unaided eye, since its distance is calculated to be about 3 million light-years. However and due to its relatively large apparent size (almost as large as the area covered by four full Moons), it has a low surface brightness and therefore it is a difficult object to observe under less than ideal conditions.

M33's loosely-wound spiral arms are filled with numerous reddish HII regions (emission nebulae of ionized hydrogen), as well as bluish clouds of young stars. Many of them have their own NGC numbers, the most prominent being NGC 604 (visible at the lower left of the spiral at 8 o' clock position from the nucleus). NGC 604 has a diameter of nearly 1,500 light-years and is estimated that it contains at least 200 newly-formed hot stars.

The galaxy was probably discovered in the 17th Century by Giovanni Batista Hodierna and rediscovered later in 1764 by Charles Messier, who gave it the catalog name M33. It was among the first "Nebulae" identified as extragalactic objects and it was E. Hubble that measured its distance using pulsating stars known as Cepheids, that placed it well outside our own Milky Way.

M33 is the third-largest galaxy of the Local Group, after the Andromeda Galaxy and our own Milky Way, with an estimated diameter of 50,000 light-years, about half the size of the Milky Way. Some astronomers believe that M33 may be a remote but gravitationally bound companion of the Andromeda galaxy.

but I am arrogant enough to mean "lower forms of animal life" when I refer to animals. Thus, when I say that I like animals, I do not necessarily include my own species, among whom are large numbers of individuals for whom I have no fondness at all, and some whom I hold in utter contempt. Indeed, I sometimes wonder why "You're an animal" is an insult; it seems to me that, if animals could talk, "You're a human" would be one of their favorite insults :-)

The Queyras is a valley located in the French Hautes-Alpes, of which the geographical extent is the basin of the river Guil, a tributary of the Durance. The Queyras is one of the oldest mountain ranges of the Alps, and it was one of the last ones to be opened to public tourism towards the end of the 20th century, thus being relatively untouched by environmental destruction.

The Queyras is also one of the 58 Regional nature parks of France.

The GR58, also known as the Tour du Queyras ("The tour of Queyras" in French), is a long-distance walking route that forms a 108-km hiking loop in the Queyras.

The wine spring of Western Han Dynasty is the highlight to see and has a beautiful story to share. In 121BC of the Western Han Dynasty, the General Huo Qubing from the Han Court won a total victory in the famous Hexi Battle against Huns. In order to celebrate the success, the Emperor Wu awarded him a pot of luscious wine. The General Huo thought the contribution should have come to the whole army. So he poured the wine into the spring and drank it with his soldiers, thus the spring got the beautiful name "Wine Spring".

Butterflies have long been considered symbols of positive transfromation. The Glasswing butterfly is native to Mexico and central Americam , with transparant wings that represent our organizations's commitment to transparancy, Just like the butterfly effect, we believe one small act act can achieve great things.

The Small Ground-Finch is one of the most common and highly adaptable, as well as widespread of the Darwin’s Finches of the Galapagos Islands. In towns and villages they are found foraging on dusty margins of streets and act very much as would a House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) in other parts of the world. Yet in higher and moister areas they may be seen perched on a Galapagos Tortoise, waiting for bugs or seeds to be uncovered by the movements of the large reptile. This is the smallest and smallest billed of the ground-finches and thus it eats the smallest seeds available.

The Athena statue was constructed from 1982 to 1990, Designed by Alan LeQuire

The Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the one in Athens, Greece, was built largely out of plaster as a temporary exhibit building (the Nashville pavilion of the 1897 Centennial Exposition). It was saved from demolition by public sentiment and the nickles and dimes of school children and tourists, thus preserving this symbol of Nashville as the "Athens of the South". In the 1920s the temporary plaster building was replaced with a permanent, concrete and steel incarnation, which remains today.

In the rainy season, the Salar resembles an enormous mirror that merges in the horizon with the sky. Thus the tours are restricted to some areas.

After a long search I found in the basement this old, rusty wrench that I have never used. In the first pictures I made of this tool, the red blossom was missing and thus a major eye-catcher, which gives the picture not only color contrast, but also a hard-soft contrast.

The species belongs to the monotypic genus Micropygia

Although not considered rare, they are extremely shy and elusive and thus very difficult to be spotted.

Its natural habitats are dry savanna and subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland.

Known in Brazil as "maxalalagá".

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Gruiformes

Family: Rallidae

Genus: Micropygia Bonaparte, 1856

Species: M. schomburgkii (Cabanis in Schomburgk, 1848)

Binomial name: Micropygia schomburgkii

The Laguna Verde covers an area of 1700 ha, and a narrow causeway divides it into two parts. It is at the southwestern extremity of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve and Bolivia itself. It has mineral suspensions of arsenic and other minerals which renders colour to the lake waters. Its color varies from turquoise to dark emerald depending on the disturbance caused to sediments in the lake by winds.

In the backdrop of the lake there is the inactive volcano Licancabur of 5,868 metres (19,252 ft) in elevation, which is a nearly perfect cone. It is believed that an ancient crypt used to be at its peak.

Icy winds are a common phenomenon there and lake waters can attain temperatures as low as -56 degree C but because of its chemical composition its waters still remain in a liquid state. It is 30 km away from Palques Lake.

***

"Licancabur" Volcano derives from the Kunza words used by the Atacameño people to refer to the volcano: lican ("people", or pueblo) and cábur ("mountain"); thus, "mountain of the people". It is also known as "Volcan de Atacama" and "Licancaur".
