The top rather random layout is nearer to the first end-point I reached when putting the jigsaw together. The image wraps so a large number of arrangements with different outlines are possible from the tessellating adjacent square twosie pieces. I'll investigate a few and post photos. The most compact solution will be the 21x14tile rectangle - and any of the 294 pieces could be in the lower left corner.

 

One thing that threw me when I was putting together the blue fish in the centre - there is a colour change and very slight mismatch along the cut - indicating that the jigsaw was printed in two halves.

 

The path I took through the problem led initially to a much more diagonal solution - I had two growing lumps and when the first chance of joining them together emerged the 'hole' and 'knob' were on very different 'levels'. As this is my largest board I needed to bring several lumps from the top of the left lump down and re-attach them to the lower edge so that the 'joining point' moved to the centre of the board.

 

Laying out all the pieces for a photo gave me a good idea of the kind of colours and details involved but I wouldn't do it the next time for this puzzle. Laying out twenty then stacking similar pieces on top of each, then 'dealing' twenty more to get sorted upright piles feels much more useful to me than throwing them in a container.

 

The first grouping I took out was the purple sea-urchin/jellyfish, then I worked on the pink threadlike coral and the green plant-like coral. It was soon clear that I had to check every detail across the junction as partial image matches were common. The corals were a good choice allowing me to put reasonably large areas together, but also highlighted that I needed to clear the working board to make any further progress. I started stacking pieces of similar colours on top of each, picking groups out and working on them on separate boards. The stacks are then consolidated to free a growing area of the main board for new lumps of puzzle.

 

I was working on top of the 1500pc Portapuzzle cover which was soon shown to be a mistake as it is far too slippy. Things might slide easily but they come apart instantly because the pieces have no 'necks' and so there is no cohesion between groups of pieces. When they came apart rebuilding often took several attempts because the pieces would also spin!

 

The nature of the image makes it impossible that all the creatures can be kept together.

In Britain, sublittoral specimens usually grow up to 20mm long, 14mm wide, 10mm high, but 15mm is usual maximum length of intertidal specimens. The bottom specimen in this image exceeds both these maxima. 30mm long specimens are sometimes found in N. America.

Usually, apex is closer to centre (about 25% to 40% of length from anterior) than on Tectura virginea (about 18% to 30% of length from anterior), but both species vary and ranges overlap.

You may be interested to know that the mushroom we see is only the fruit of a larger organism growing underground (or in a log or other substrate). In a rotting log you can sometimes expose a mass of typically white, interwoven, threadlike filaments called hyphae, known collectively as mycelium. The mushroom mycelium is much larger than the fruiting body, and can cover acres and can be decades (in some cases hundreds) of years old. A generous school parent purchased a 3D printer for James Hilburt's math classes at the J. S. Jenks Middle School in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia and Hilburt is getting the students excited about designing their own projects by printing out 3-d stackable cups, a rubik's cube-like 3d puzzle, a complete chess set and small replicas of the Disney Castle and the Eiffel Tower. Bacteriastrum is a single-celled organism belonging to a group of algae known as diatoms. Diatoms are unique among phytoplankton in having a glasslike exterior made of silica. Bacteriastrum is common throughout temperate and coastal waters. This cylindrical diatom forms threadlike chains of cells. Bacteriastrum has long spinelike projections called setae that help it stay afloat in the water column. OK folks... Time to get your eyes to focus on sawflies. Two Abia lonicerae today in Wilden flitting around Lonicera fragrantissima (new for garden) and a report from Maulden of the Pamphilid Acantholyda erythrocephala, a natty blacksawfly with long threadlike antennae and a neat blood-orange head. The latter has pines as its hostplant and is probably a new for county record. Look on low branches of mature Scots pine or on saplings.

Acantholyda erythrocephala is a species of sawfly in the family Pamphiliidae commonly known as the red-headed pine sawfly or the pine false webworm.[2] Native to Europe, it has been introduced into North America where it has become invasive.[3]

 

Description

Fully-grown larvae of A. erythrocephala have yellowish heads spotted with dark brown, and greenish-grey bodies with purplish longitudinal stripes on the top and sides.[4] Erythrocephala (Greek) signifies "redhead", a feature of the adult imago.[citation needed]

 

Distribution

The species is native to Europe and was introduced to North America in 1925, where it has become widespread in northern parts[3] of the United States and Canada, where it is a major pest of white pine (Pinus strobus). Other trees infested include Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and red pine (Pinus resinosa).[5]

 

Life cycle

Adults emerge in late spring, and after mating, the female lays eggs on the previous year's needles. The eggs hatch in about two weeks and the larvae move to the base of the old needles and start to feed, only moving on to new needles if they exhaust the supply of old ones. The larvae construct silken webbing inside which they live in tubes, chewing off needles and pulling them inside the tubes for consumption; the tubes soon fill up with bits of needles, cast skins and frass.[4] Older larvae construct their own individual tubes. By the end of June the larvae are fully developed and fall to the ground where they create earthen cells in which they spend the winter.[4]

 

Ecology

In Europe, the larvae of Acantholyda erythrocephala are attacked by the parasitoid Tachinid fly Myxexoristops hertingi. In 2002, 2003 and 2004, in an effort to initiate a biological control programme in North America, pupae of this fly were imported from Italy and released in Ontario in an area of red pine (Pinus resinosa) infested with sawfly larvae. Because populations of sawfly larvae have large natural swings, the impact of the parasitoid fly was difficult to evaluate.[6] Another biocontrol measure investigated involved using an aqueous suspension of Neodiprion abietis nucleopolyhedravirus (NeabNPV); this reduced the survival rate of the sawfly larvae by about 50%, but its impact was again inconclusive.[6]

 

Defoliation by the sawfly larvae does not directly kill a tree, but it weakens it, allowing pathogens and pests such as bark beetles to attack, and these may result in mortality.[5]

Spectacular trunk forming plants with 4 - 5 ft rosettes, pretty grey-blue with small golden teeth and threadlike filifers at the leaf's end.

Daisy fleabane is a member of the Aster (Asteraceae) family. It is an annual plant with slender, erect stems up to 2 1/2 feet tall. The flowers resemble miniature daisies. Flower heads are on individual branches in a spreading cluster, with each head up to 1 inch wide. The heads have a fringe of more than 40 white, threadlike ray flowers, about 1/4 inch long, surrounding a circle of densely packed, yellow disk flowers.

 

Daisy fleabane blooms midspring to early fall and is common throughout the tallgrass region in mesic to dry prairies, old fields, pastures, and other sites. It is considered to be a weed in disturbed sites over most of the U.S. and southern Canada.

Linaria vulgaris (common toadflax,[1][2] yellow toadflax, or butter-and-eggs[3]) is a species of toadflax (Linaria), native from Europe to Siberia and Central Asia.[4] It has also been introduced and is now common in North America.[3]

Growth

It is a perennial plant with short spreading roots, erect to decumbent stems 15–90 cm (6–35 in) high, with fine, threadlike, glaucous blue-green leaves 2–6 cm (3⁄4–2 1⁄4 in) long and 1–5 mm (0.04–0.20 in) broad. The flowers are similar to those of the snapdragon, 25–33 mm (0.98–1.30 in) long, pale yellow except for the lower tip which is orange, borne in dense terminal racemes from mid summer to mid autumn. The flowers are mostly visited by bumblebees.[5] The fruit is a globose capsule 5–11 mm (0.20–0.43 in) long and 5–7 mm (0.20–0.28 in) broad, containing numerous small seeds.[2]

The plant is widespread on ruderal spots, along roads, in dunes, and on disturbed and cultivated land.[2]

 

Because the flower is largely closed by its underlip, pollination requires strong insects such as bees and bumblebees (Bombus species).[2]

 

The plant is food plant for a large number of insects such as the sweet gale moth (Acronicta euphorbiae), mouse moth (Amphipyra tragopoginis), silver Y (Autographa gamma), Calophasia lunula, gorgone checkerspot (Charidryas gorgone carlota), toadflax pug (Eupithecia linariata), satyr pug (Eupithecia satyrata), Falseuncaria ruficiliana, bog fritillary (Boloria eunomia), Pyrrhia umbra, brown rustic (Rusina ferruginea), and Stenoptilia bipunctidactyla.

 

It may be mildly toxic to livestock.[6]

 

Fossil record

Seeds of the common toadflax, were identified from the Hoxnian interglacial strata at Clacton. Records have also come from the Weichselian glaciation strata in Essex, Huntingdonshire, Surrey and North Wales. This evidence makes the native status of the plant in Britain quite evident despite the very strong association that it has today with waste places and man-made habitats.[7]

 

Cultivation and uses

While most commonly found as a wildflower, toadflax is sometimes cultivated for cut flowers, which are long-lasting in the vase. Like snapdragons (Antirrhinum), they are often grown in children's gardens for the "snapping" flowers which can be made to "talk" by squeezing them at the base of the corolla.[8]

 

The plant requires ample drainage, but is otherwise adaptable to a variety of conditions. It has escaped from cultivation in North America where it is common on roadsides and in poor soils, where it has now naturalized in many U.S. states and Canadian provinces.[9]

 

Despite its reputation as a weed, like the dandelion, this plant has also been used in folk medicine for a variety of ailments. A tea made from the leaves was taken as a laxative and strong diuretic as well as for jaundice, dropsy, and enteritis with drowsiness.[citation needed] For skin diseases and piles, either a leaf tea or an ointment made from the flowers was used.[citation needed] In addition, a tea made in milk instead of water has been used as an insecticide. It is confirmed to have diuretic and fever-reducing properties.[10][11]

 

Other names

Linaria acutiloba Fisch. ex Rchb. is a synonym.[12] Because this plant grows as a weed, it has acquired a large number of local colloquial names, including brideweed, bridewort, butter and eggs (but see Lotus corniculatus), butter haycocks, bread and butter, bunny haycocks, bunny mouths, calf's snout, Continental weed, dead men's bones, devil's flax, devil's flower, doggies, dragon bushes, eggs and bacon (but see Lotus corniculatus), eggs and butter, false flax, flaxweed, fluellen (but see Kickxia), gallweed, gallwort, impudent lawyer, Jacob's ladder (but see Polemonium), lion's mouth, monkey flower (but see Mimulus), North American ramsted, rabbit flower, rancid, ransted, snapdragon (but see Antirrhinum), wild flax, wild snapdragon, wild tobacco (but see Nicotiana), yellow rod, yellow toadflax.[8]

And sawing was interesting. So after all the figuring and sawing I had to solder it on and hope I didn't melt it or something.

 

The stone is a green spinel, more than I really wanted to spend for a stone in a ring I have never made before, but when I was at the rock shop searching for the perfect uncut stone, and I couldn't find one, this one just jumped into the setting and fit perfectly! It's mystical qualities are that it "refreshes the emotional, increasing compassion, love, forgiveness, self-esteem and the relaxed and easy affection for others."

 

The writing on the band is from "Lost Goddesses of Early Greece A collection of pre-Hellenic Myths" by Charlene Spretnak.

 

The part I used is from the myth of Athena and reads:

"...Long before there were palaces, the Goddess had appeared to a group of women gathering plants in a field. She broke open the stems of blue-flowered flax and showed them how the threadlike fibers could be spun and then woven. The woof and warp danced in Her fingers until a length of cloth was born before them. She told them which plants and roots would color the cloth, and then She led the mortal from the field to a pit of clay..."

 

Would I make another crown setting? Yes

Jeffrey's Shooting Star (Dodecatheon jeffreyi).

Dodecatheon jeffreyi is a species of flowering plant in the primrose family known by the common names Sierra Shooting Star, Jeffrey's Shooting Star, and Tall Mountain Shooting Star. This wildflower is native to western North America from California to Alaska to Montana, where it grows in mountain meadows and streambanks. This is a thick-rooted perennial with long, slightly wrinkled leaves around the base. It erects slim, tall, hairy stems which are dark in color and are topped with inflorescences of 3 to 18 showy flowers. Each flower nods with its mouth pointed to the ground when new, and becomes more erect with age. It has four or five reflexed sepals in shades of pink, lavender, or white which lie back against the body of the flower. Each sepal base has a blotch of bright yellow. From the corolla mouth protrude large dark anthers surrounding a threadlike stigma. The flowers of this species were considered good luck by the Nlaka'pamux people, who used them as amulets and love charms.

 

The Nlaka'pamux - commonly called "the Thompson" - and also Thompson River Salish, Thompson Salish, Thompson River Indians or Thompson River people - are an indigenous First Nations/Native American people of the Interior Salish language group in southern British Columbia. Their traditional territory includes parts of the North Cascades region of Washington.

Stink bugs seem to especially like this plant. It gets its species name from the threadlike filaments along the leaf margins. It has has its very own moth!

Katydids are nocturnal insects related to crickets and grasshoppers, noted for their loud mating calls. Katydids have large hind legs and are distinguished by their extremely long, threadlike antennae and the thick, upwardly curved ovipositor (egg-laying structure) of the females. Often large and green, many katydids have long wings. The United States has over 100 variety varieties if Katydids.

This particular Katydid was found in my front yard in some shrubbery.

Husk & silk: The green leafy husk surrounds and protects the ear. You can also see remnants of corn silk—the fine, threadlike styles that grow from each kernel and emerge from the tip of the ear.

 

Texture: The kernels look glossy and firm, indicating freshness.

 

Uses

Culinary: Corn can be eaten boiled, grilled, or roasted on the cob, or kernels can be removed and used in soups, stews, breads, tortillas, and cereals.

We have two types of Goldfields in the Santa Monica’s - Coastal Goldfield and Southern Goldfield. The plants are very similar and hard to tell apart unless you know what to look for. Looking at pictures did not help me until I was on the ground with my magnifying glass looking at the leaf structure and smelling the flowers. Royal Goldfields also tend to have lots more glandular hairs.

Royal Goldfield has leaves that are threadlike and have divisions. Coastal Goldfields lack the smell and the leaves are not divided.

I have been tired all day and haven't been able to function properly. I also have a lot on my mind.

I have seriously been so down lately that I can't even verbalize or write much about it because it seems to consume me. That, and sometimes it's easier to just shut your mouth and wait for things to pass.

Several years ago I had a dream where I was led through a garden filled with the most beautiful flowers one would wish to lay their eyes upon. I was wide eyed with awe. The end of the path emerged into a clearing where a kindly Asian woman sat at a picnic table, upon which sat a tall, wide mouthed jar. She asked me which flower I had enjoyed most. I went on and on about the beauty I had witnessed. She pointed to the jar sitting on the picnic table and told me that the flower growing inside of that jar was by far the most beautiful...more so than any I had already seen. I kind of chuckled, seeing only that the jar was filled with pebbles. She explained that the jar was indeed filled with pebbles and then water was added, seeping between them to the thin layer of dirt at the very bottom. Tiny, hard shelled, pods were placed on the top layer of pebbles. Watered several times a day, the shell of the pod would eventually start to break down and weaken. When that happened, threadlike appendages sprouted from the pod and began their trek through the maze of pebbles. It was a long and tiring journey to reach the bottom layer of soil, she had explained, but if one of the appendages made it to that lower most layer where the soil lie, life would be born from the pod above in the form of the most perfect white blossom. Its beauty, unimaginable, its strength indescribable.

At that moment I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned to see the silhouette of a man standing behind me. I heard music playing softly in the background. The man told me that he could feel my pain when he touched my shoulder. "This is your song," he had said, "and every time you hear it, you will feel every tear and sorrow in your life return to you...and while you feel so completely alone, you must know that I am with you and I feel each of your tears and sorrows as well. Dance through the pebbles and find solid ground."

That is the last thing I remember before waking up. Never has a dream been so perfectly clear to me. As I readied for work, I hummed the portion of song I had heard in my dream over and over trying to figure out if it was a song I knew. It didn't feel familiar at all. I got in my car that morning and turned on the radio. As I pulled away from my house, I heard the song from my dream. It was as if I had fallen asleep again...but I was wide awake. I hummed along in amazement until the words began to flow. I listened intently and cried.

 

I leave you with the song from my dream, because so many times I return to it.

Goulburn River National Park, New South Wales -- near Lees Pinch Lookout. A low, sparse shrub no more than 50 cm high, with sprawling branches, growing on a flat ridge-top in deep, loose sandy soil over sandstone. Sparse eucalypt woodland.

 

Homoranthus, an Australian endemic genus of 22 species, is hardly recognisable as belongly to the Myrtaceae (Myrtle Family). The closely related Darwinia is equally curious. And this species is so distinct from most other Homoranthus species it was initially placed with two other species in a separate genus, Rylstonea, though that genus is no longer recognised.

 

The flowers are in pairs, and most of each flower's length consists of the hypanthium or "calyx tube", present in all members of the Myrtaceae but usually more open and cup-shaped. Fused to the inner wall of the hypanthium is the ovary, of one compartment and with very few ovules. Five tiny petals, only about 1.5 mm long, arise from the inner rim of the hypanthium. They may have already fallen from these two flowers, as have the two large bracts that enclose the young flower pair. It is the sepals that are divided into these threadlike lobes, up to 10 per sepal according to Flora of New South Wales. The long styles each have a tuft of short hairs below the stigma.

 

I don't know what pollinates these pendent flowers, but would not be surpised if it is small nectar-feeding birds. In Australia these are the honeyeaters and spinebills.

 

H. darwinioides has a quite restricted distribution. Lees Pinch is one of its main areas of occurrence, the other being the sandy Goonoo State Forest near Dubbo, about 100 km further inland.

Nigella is a genus of about 14 species of annual plants in the family Ranunculaceae, native to southern Europe, north Africa, south and southwest Asia. Common names applied to members of this genus are Nigella, Devil-in-a-bush or Love in a Mist.

 

The species grow to 20-90 cm tall, with finely divided leaves; the leaf segments are narrowly linear to threadlike. The flowers are white, yellow, pink, pale blue or pale purple, with five to 10 petals. The fruit is a capsule composed of several united follicles, each containing numerous seeds; in some species (e.g. Nigella damascena), the capsule is large and inflated.

 

The seeds of N. sativa, known as kalonji, black cumin (though this can also refer to Bunium persicum), onion seed or just nigella, are used as a spice in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. The dry-roasted nigella seeds flavor curries, vegetables and pulses. The black seeds taste like a combination of onions, black pepper and oregano, and have a bitterness to them like mustard seeds. It can be used as a "pepper" in recipes with pod fruit, vegetables, salads and poultry.

 

Several species are grown as ornamental plants in gardens. Nigella damascena has been grown in English cottage gardens since Elizabethan times, commonly called love-in-a-mist. Nigella hispanica is a taller species with larger blue flowers, red stamens, and grey leaves. Nigella seeds are self-sowing if the seed pods are left to mature.

 

In India, the seeds are used as a carminative and stimulant to ease bowel and indigestion problems, and are given to treat intestinal worms, nerve defects, to reduce flatulence, and induce sweating. Dried pods are sniffed to restore a lost sense of smell. It is also used to repel some insects, much like mothballs.

 

The dried seed capsules can also be used in flower arrangements.

Alberto Giacometti - A Bregaglian in Paris

 

"The Walking Man" is one of the most famous works of Alberto Giacometti. The bronze sculpture moves forward and doesn't stop walking.

 

Long, threadlike and angular, Alberto's sculputers remind one of the granite mountains of Bregaglia that seem to endlessly reach upwards into the blue sky. His work also reveals the fragility of man and the toughness of those that lived in the shadow of the mountains.

Perhaps not everyone knows, that the famous artist's portrait is printed on the 100. Swiss Franc bill and that in 1901, Alberto Giacometti was born in the village of Borgonovo in Bregaglia.

Thanks to his father, Giovanni Giacometti, and his godfather, Cuno Amiet, both well-know painters, Alberto was already exposed to art at an early age. Alberto became famous in Paris, where he worked since 1922 with his brother Diego Giacometti. While experimenting with cubism and surrealism, Alberto became internationally renowned for his surrealist work.

Despite his success and well-known friends (Picasso, Mirò and Sartre, among others), he often returned home, to Bregaglia. In his atelier, in Stampa, local people modeled for him, including the waitress of the local restaurant he frequented and members of his family. The great sculpor and painter died in 1966 and now he rests in peace, near his parents, in his hometown's cemetery.

 

Alberto's atelier is located near the Museum Ciäsa Grande in Stampa. His entire family is buried in the San Giorgio cemetery in Borgonovo.

 

Walking through Bregaglia Valley and observing its varied mountain landscapes and people definitely helps to better understand the work of this great artist.

The typically white threadlike vegetation portion of a fungi.

any insect of the order Ephemeroptera, found around streams and ponds. The approximately 2,000 species are up to 1.6 in. Nerine is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family, subfamily Amaryllidoideae. They are bulbous perennials, some evergreen, associated with rocky and arid habitats. They bear spherical umbels of lily-like flowers in shades from white through pink to crimson. In the case of deciduous species, the flowers may appear on naked stems before the leaves develop. Native to South Africa, there are about 30 species in the genus. Though described as lilies, they are not significantly related to the true lilies Lilium, but more closely resemble their relatives, Amaryllis and Lycoris. The genus was established by the cleric and Amaryllidaceae specialist William Herbert in 1820. Nerines have been widely cultivated and much hybridized worldwide, especially Nerine bowdenii, N. sarniensis and N. undulata (previously known as N. flexuosa). The hybrid cultivar 'Zeal Giant' has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The other 20 species are rarely cultivated and very little is known regarding their biology. Many species are threatened with extinction due to the loss or degradation of their habitat. Species of Nerine are herbaceous flowering plants that grow from bulbs. Their leaves are linear, obviously flat in some species and appearing threadlike in others. Their flowers are borne in an umbel on a solid leafless stem (scape). Individual flowers are either radially symmetrical (actinomorphic) or have one plane of symmetry (zygomorphic). Each flower has six narrow red or pink tepals joined at the base to form a short extended or recurved tube. The free parts of the tepals are generally wavy. There are six stamens that are inserted in the base of the petals and frequently protrude from the flower. The stamens can be straight or curved with thin filaments and oblong anthers that attach to their filament at the back (dorsifixed). The inferior ovary has one to many ovules. The style is threadlike and has a three-lobed stigma. The fruit is a capsule. Many species of Nerine have petals with wavy edges, such as Nerine humilis. Nerine species can be either evergreen or deciduous; the deciduous species can either grow during the winter or the summer. The growth cycle thus defines three groups. There is a strong association between a species' growth habit, the shape of its leaves and the amount of DNA in its cell nuclei. The largest group of 12 species contains the evergreen nerines that retain their leaves throughout the summer and winter (N. angustifolia, N. appendiculata, N. filamentosa, N. filifolia, N. frithii, N. gaberonensis, N. gibsonii, N. gracilis, N. masoniorum, N. pancratioides, N. platypetala and N. rehmannii). Their leaves are narrow and they have the smallest amount of DNA per nucleus (18.0â24.6 pg). Four deciduous species grow in the winter and do not have any leaves during the summer (N. humilis, N. pudica, N. ridleyi and N. sarniensis). They have wide leaves and more DNA per nucleus (25.3â26.2 pg). A final group of seven species only grow during the summer and have no leaves in the winter (N. bowdenii, N. duparquetiana, N. krigei, N. laticoma, N. marincowitzii, N. pusilla and N. undulata). They have wide leaves and the most DNA per nucleus (26.8â35.3 pg). The earliest published name for the genus was Imhofia, given by Lorenz Heister in 1755. The later name Nerine, published by William Herbert in 1820, was widely used, resulting in a decision to conserve the name Nerine and reject the name Imhofia. The genus name derives from the Nereids (sea-nymphs) of Greek mythology that protected sailors and their ships. When Herbert chose the name of these nymphs for the first species of the genus, Nerine sarniensis, he alluded to the story of how this South African species arrived on the island of Guernsey in the English Channel. It is said that a ship carrying boxes of the bulbs of this species destined for the Netherlands was shipwrecked on Guernsey. The boxes of bulbs were washed up on the island and the bulbs became established and multiplied around the coast.
