The Panorpidae are a family of scorpionflies containing more than 480 species. The family is the largest family in Mecoptera, covering approximately 70% species of the order. Species range between 9–25 mm long.
These insects have four membranous wings and threadlike antennae. Their elongated faces terminate with mouthparts that are used to feed on dead and dying insects, nectar, and rotting fruit. While in larval form, they scavenge by consuming dead insects on the ground.
This tiny female parasitic wasp is injecting her eggs into a small oak gall where her offspring will develop as internal parasites of the gall-making inhabitants, probably the Jewel Oak Gall Wasp (Acraspis macrocarpae). She is only about 3.5 mm long and her threadlike ovipositor is about the same diameter as that of a human hair!
Alleculinae is a subfamily of comb-clawed beetles belonging to the family Tenebrionidae. These beetles are characterized by an oval body, threadlike antennae, relatively long legs and tarsi quite elongated. Their most striking feature, however, are the combed claws of the hind tarsi, that show fine teeth.
There are more than 230 genera in Alleculinae found worldwide, separated into the two tribes Alleculini and Cteniopodini.
Aaron's beard (Hypericum calycinum) is a vigorous fast growing woody plant spreading by stolons [threadlike runners]. Produces a mass of yellow flowers in the summer. Google
The name derives from a Biblical quotation referring to the patriarch Aaron:
"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments"

The Hedgehog Head (Sparganium erectum) is a perennial that belongs to the Hedgehog family (Sparganiaceae). The plant is native to Eurasia and North Africa.
The large hedgehog's head blooms from June to September with flowers that are dark brown to black at the top. The female flowers have long, threadlike styles and stigmas and are in one to four heads. The heads with male flowers are above those with female flowers.
Inflorescence with female flowers
The fruit is a nut. The seeds have six to ten sharp or rounded ribs.
The plant is found in and near fresh, nutrient-rich water.
Adult chickweed geometers typically rest with wings held flat out to the sides. Forewings are pointed and dull yellow; each has a pinkish or reddish spot near the center of the wing. Two pinkish or reddish bands parallel the edges of the wings; in the typical resting posture, the bands on the forewings appear continuous with the bands on the hindwings. The antennae of males are featherlike; those of females are threadlike.
Larvae are slender, but thickened and rough at the first abdominal segment. Variable in color, with green and white stripes or checkered and mottled with colors including brown, tan, and red. Geometers (“earth measurers”) are the familiar “inchworms” that hump their backs (forming a “loop”) when they move the rear set of legs up to the front set, before moving the front set forward for the next “step.”
Very common in vacant lots, weedy roadsides, and yards in urban areas, as well as in the countryside, in fields and grasslands. Larvae feed on chickweeds (Stellaria species) and other low-growing plants such as smartweed and clover.
Adults fly from mid-April through October, often during the day. This moth is multibrooded. Larvae pupate in a thin cocoon. (Missouri

Carduus acanthoides, known as the spiny plumeless thistle, welted thistle, or plumeless thistle, is a biennial plant species of thistle in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The plant is native to Europe and Asia and introduced in many other areas, where it is sometimes considered an invasive species.
Carduus acanthoides may exceed 2 metres (6.6 ft) in height and can form weedy monotypic stands. The stem and foliage are spiny and sometimes woolly. The specific epithet acanthoides refers to its spiny foliage. The plant starts from a flat, basal rosette and then bolts an erect stem with occasional toothed, wrinkled, spiny leaves. The leaves are 4–8 in (10–20 cm) long with lobed or pinnately-divided edges. The abaxial surface (underside) of the leaf is somewhat hairy.
At the top of each branch of the stem is an inflorescence of one to several flower heads, each rounded, covered in spiny phyllaries, and bearing many threadlike, purple or pink disc florets. Each flowerhead is around 0.5–1 in (13–25 mm) across. It flowers throughout the summer and early fall. The achenes are 2–3 mm long, four-angled, with faint lengthwise stripes. The
fluffy pappus bristles are 11–13 mm long. After flowering and setting seed, it dies.

A mackerel sky, known in Germany and France as sheep clouds (German: Schaefchenwolken; French: nuages moutonneux), is a large, spreading assemblage of clouds that resembles a series of waves or fish scales, with blue sky peeking out between the puffs. It consists of cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds, which indicate moisture high up (around 18,000-30,000 feet (6,000-10,000 meters) in a cold sky (the blue bits indicate that these clouds are breaking up due to instability in the air). Mare's tails, meanwhile, are long, threadlike cirrus clouds, often stretched by strong high-level winds. Both clues suggest an impending storm, typically 6-8 hours away [source: Weather Online].

Over the years it seems I've not taken any photos on April 27th, which is no bad thing because it gives me an opportunity to showcase three Australian native flowers
Banksias belong to the Protea family of which there are more than 170 species. This plant variety is endemic to Australia with the exception of one which can also be found in New Guinea.
Banksias are sturdy plants with stout trunks and long leathery and toothed leaves. The flower spikes are cylindrical or globular and have hundreds of small flowers packed in them. The colour of the flower ranges from yellow to red. The individual flowers are threadlike and are rich in nectar that attracts birds like honeyeaters, while parrots and cockatoos will feed on the seeds.
As the flower dies, the spike develops into fruiting cones, there is one in this photo. The fruit cones protect the seeds from fire and foraging animals. The cones will not open and release their seeds until the cone is completely dry or burnt.
The ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora) is a white, translucent flowering plant in the heath family (Ericaceae), making it a legitimate relative of blueberries and cranberries.
Because it entirely lacks chlorophyll—the green pigment in most plants—it cannot undergo photosynthesis (the process where plants use sunlight to synthesize sugars from carbon dioxide and water).
Instead, it operates as a parasite that obtains all of its nutrients and sugars directly from specific fungi rather than the sun. It does this by intercepting the "wood-wide web" --an underground fungal network between trees and fungi (called ectomycorrhizae), where the trees trade sugars for nutrients with the fungal partner associated with the tree's roots.
The ghost pipe is an extreme host specialist, exclusively targeting the threadlike fungal networks (called mycelial networks) belonging to Russula and Lactarius mushrooms.
Despite its parasitic lifestyle and fungus-like appearance, it reproduces traditionally like other flowering plants: bumblebees pollinate its single nodding blossom, which subsequently turns upright to release its seeds.
By adopting a parasitic lifestyle, the ghost pipe’s genome (genetic makeup) has undergone a massive, systemic downsizing, permanently discarding genes that are no longer required, such as those responsible for chlorophyll production and photosynthetic functions.
This plant features a multicontinental distribution, found across North America, Central America, northern South America (Colombia), and Eastern Asia (Japan, China, and Russia).
It is restricted entirely to the deep shade of damp, undisturbed forest floors. Because its survival depends on pre-existing, highly complex underground fungal networks, the ghost pipe cannot be artificially cultivated or transplanted.

A spider flower stands in perfect stillness, its filaments stretching outward like delicate antennae tuned to some frequency only the natural world can hear. The bloom glows in layered purples saturated at the core, feathering into softer lilacs at the edges each petal shaped with the kind of precision that feels almost engineered. Long, threadlike stamens arc outward in elegant curves, giving the flower its unmistakable spindled silhouette, a structure that feels both fragile and fiercely intentional.
The background falls away into a soft blur, isolating the bloom as if it’s suspended in its own pocket of air. The greens of the stem and leaves ground the composition, but the real drama is in the interplay of color and form: the electric violet against the muted backdrop, the tension between the bloom’s airy delicacy and its confident vertical stance. It’s a portrait of a flower that refuses to be ordinary a botanical firework frozen at the moment of its quietest brilliance.

Hesperaloe parviflora, also known as red yucca, hummingbird yucca, redflower false yucca and samandoque, is a plant that is native to Chihuahuan desert of west Texas east and south into central and south Texas and northeastern Mexico around Coahuila.
Hesperaloe parviflora has narrow evergreen leaves with a fringe of white threadlike hairs along their edges and grows in clumps 3–6 ft (0.91–1.83 m) high and wide. Red or yellow tubular flowers are borne on branching flower stalks (inflorescences) up to 5 ft (1.5 m) tall from late spring to mid-summer.
Since mushrooms are just reproductive structures, you wonder what they are the reproductive structures of. Microscopic spores fall from the pores and gills of mushrooms such as those pictured above. If environmental conditions are just right, fungal hyphae (HI-fee, the plural of "hypha") emerge from the spore -- like the sprout emerging from a seed. These hyphae form a webby mass of typically white, interwoven, threadlike filaments known collectively as mycelium. Each individual, threadlike filament of the mycelium is known as a hypha (HI-fah), plural hyphae (HI-fee). This mycelium composed of hyphae does the organism's day-to-day work of breaking down and acquiring the fungus's food from humus in the soil, or decaying wood or some other substance. In other words, though usually mycelium isn't even noticed by most people, it's actually the fungus organism's body. Then when conditions are right the mycelium mass forms a budlike structure someplace and from this emerges the mushroom. The mycelium does the fungus's work, and the mushrooms enable to fungus organism to reproduce by producing spores.
In general appearance, the adults resemble some brown lacewings (Hemerobiidae). The forewings of spongillaflies have a span of 4–10 millimetres. The greyish or brownish wings have few cross veins except in the costal field, and most of these are not forked. The subcostal (Sc) and radial (R1) veins are fused near the wingtip.
The larvae of spongillaflies look rather bizarre. Similar to those of some osmylids (Osmylidae) at first glance, they have spindly legs on a bulky thorax, long antennae, and flexible, threadlike mouthparts. However, the second and third instars carry seven pairs of jointed, movable tracheal gills beneath their plump abdomen. These gills are possessed by no other extant insect family, and readily distinguish them from osmylid larvae.
Adult spongillaflies are crepuscular or nocturnal. They are omnivores, sometimes hunting small invertebrates, but mainly scavenging on such animals' carcasses, as well as on pollen and honeydew.
The females deposit their eggs singly or as small clutches on plants that droop over freshwater lakes or slow-moving rivers. A protective web is spun to cover the eggs. When the larvae hatch, they drop down into the water where they develop until pupation. They use their mouthparts to parasitize Spongillidae freshwater sponges (e.g. of the genus Spongilla, hence the name "spongillaflies") and Phylactolaemata freshwater bryozoans by stinging into the host animals' body and sucking out cell contents. The antennae are stouter than they look and are used to aid in locomotion. Development to pupation takes between several weeks and one year.
Spongillafly larvae leave the water and go to hidden places nearby to pupate, choosing locations like beneath rocks or behind tree bark. They spin a cocoon for pupation, but in temperate climates they overwinter in the cocoon as larvae, pupating only the following spring.
Well, you might as well hear the whole story on this guy. I was yanking up spent poppy plants in my yard and lo and behold a perfect green Monarch pupa dropped to the ground. I was horrified. There was some hope though - a tiny threadlike piece was still attached to the pupa top. My old mind started working. I can tie it back onto a plant of my choice. With what? Kitchen twine was the only thing that came to my panicked mind. So first I tied it to the pupa thread, and then onto a milkweed stem. It looked really beautiful and healthy. In fact, by the next day the transformation started as the color pigments inside began to show. I knew it would eclose the next morning and I began to visualize how I would photograph the tiny spectacle. I checked the next day early, inspected for a chink in the pupa, and decided I had time for breakfast and filling the bird feeder. Duties done, I gathered my camera gear, and expected I would settle onto a low stool and watch the wondrous show. Here's the "worst of times" part 2. It was already out. I missed probably by 10 minutes since the wings were already straightened out. He (yup, another boy) was hot to trot too - gone within another hour or so. To quote another piece of literature: "All's well that ends well."

The fleabane daisy grows along roadsides and in fields and woodlands. It has more than 150 threadlike, white ray flowers. The center, disc flowers are 5-toothed and yellow, and there are many flower heads to each much-branched stem. The yellow center with the large number of very fine ray flowers is the best identification. They are much finer than those of other daisies or asters. Flower heads are 1/2-3/4 inch across.
The geneus name, from Greek eri ("early") and geron ("old man"), presumably refers to the fact that the plant flowers early and has a hoary down suggesting an old man's beard. Robin's Plaintain (E. pulchellus) is slightly shorter and has fewer, but larger, lilac or violet flower heads, as well as stem leaves that are sparse and stalkless but do not clasp the stem; it is insect-pollinated and also spreads actively by runners.

The jellyfish’s translucent bell is marked by warm golden-brown tones and radiating stripes that converge at the center; while long; threadlike tentacles trail behind in gentle arcs. Native to the Pacific coast of North America; this species is an active swimmer and visual predator; commonly found in nearshore waters during seasonal blooms. Aquarium lighting accentuates the contrast between the glowing bell and the surrounding water; highlighting the delicate structure and quiet motion of this remarkable cnidarian.

So, today, Monday, I thought we should return to false yuccas, and we'll start off with this beauty, the Scarlet Yucca which isn't a yucca at all, but one of the imposters I guess.
Hesperaloe parviflora, also known as red yucca, hummingbird yucca, redflower false yucca and samandoque, is a plant that is native to Chihuahuan desert of west Texas east and south into central and south Texas and northeastern Mexico around Coahuila.Hesperaloe parviflora has narrow evergreen leaves with a fringe of white threadlike hairs along their edges and grows in clumps 3–6 ft high and wide. Red or yellow tubular flowers are borne on branching flower stalks tall from late spring to mid-summer. Most true yuccas have white flowers and can grow much larger!
This handsome brown and white clam shell, named, obviously, for its resemblance to the wing of the wild turkey, is a bivalve found on beaches from North Carolina to the West Indies, and also on Bermuda's shores, as well as in the Mediterranean area. The mollusk attaches itself by its byssus (threadlike filaments) to rocks and other solid objects in shallow water. The shell may grow to the length of 4 inches. It is a fairly thick shell with an interior of very pale lavender. It has a long series of approximately 50 small teeth on the hinge. The hinge is straight, rather than curving. Living examples are covered with a thick and bristly “carpet” or periostracum. Yet another specimin from my grandmothers' collection...it's very rare to see a turkey wing clam that is actually still together, often you just find one side or the other.
Cosmos is a genus, with the same common name of cosmos, consisting of flowering plants in the sunflower family. The generic name Cosmos derives either from the Greek κόσμος (cosmos) ‘(ordered) world’ -in reference to the neat, orderly arrangement of the floral structures - or the Greek κόσμημα (kósmima) ‘jewel’ - in reference to the jewel-like colours of the capitula (composite flowers). Cosmos are herbaceous perennial plants or annual plants growing 0.3–2 m (1 ft 0 in – 6 ft 7 in) tall. The leaves are simple, pinnate, or bipinnate, and arranged in opposite pairs. The flowers are produced in a capitulum with a ring of broad ray florets and a center of disc florets; flower color varies noticeably between the different species. The genus includes several ornamental plants popular in gardens. Numerous hybrids and cultivars have been selected and named.
Cosmos bipinnatus, commonly called the garden cosmos, Mexican aster or cosmea, is a medium-sized flowering herbaceous plant in the daisy family Asteraceae, native to the Americas. The species and its varieties and cultivars are popular as ornamental plants in temperate climate gardens.
Cosmos bipinnatus is an annual that is often considered half-hardy, although plants may reappear via self-sowing for several years. The plant height varies from 2–6 ft to (rarely) 9 ft (0.61–1.83–2.74 m). The cultivated varieties appear in shades of pink and purple as well as white. The branched stem is usually densely to occasionally occupied by fine, split up, rough trichomes, but some specimens are completely hairless. The petiole itself is inconspicuous, winged, 10 (rarely to 15) mm long, and sometimes the leaves are almost sessile.
The partial leaves are linear-filiform to narrow linear with a width of 0.5 to 1 (rarely to 1.7) mm; the tips are pointed, hardened, but not particularly sharp. Its foliage appears as if finely cut into threadlike segments. When flowering, the plants can become top heavy. This problem is alleviated when they are grown in groups, as the bipinnate leaves interlock and the plants support each other.
The achenes become blackish, are smooth or short-bristly. Their shape is spindle-like. They are rounded off into a short, 0.5 to 1.7 mm long, but distinctly pronounced rostrum. The inner achenes are up to 18 mm long, their yellowish beaks are 4 to 5 (rarely to 10) mm long. A pappus is missing or it consists only of two to three awn-like, 1-3 mm large bristles.
This tiny female parasitic wasp is injecting her eggs into a small oak gall where her offspring will develop as internal parasites of the gall-making inhabitants, probably the Jewel Oak Gall Wasp (Acraspis quercushirta). She is only about 3.5mm long and her threadlike ovipositor isn't much thicker than a human hair!

When you sing you begin with Do-Re-Mi:
There are several entertainers that I have met or rather seen in the early stages of my life. As a household with numerous servants and helpers, there was one character even to chase away stray cats. His name is Bhaskaran, but he is called Pakkaran. With his threadlike moustache, whiskers and hairy pinnae, the child viewed him as a tomcat. Pakkaran himself took over the mentioned task, probably because of boredom or out of ailurophobia. In the late evening, he used to roam around the property to hit the poor cats that are peacefully napping. One day he took the child along to demonstrate his prowess, and the child didn't find it amusing.
Yet, the child noticed and admired the talent possessed by some of those servants and helpers. A boy named Prabhakaran was a good singer and an instant poet who created and recited limericks at ease.
In earlier days, there was a character called 'Hanuman Pandaram'. Dressed as a monkey, he once a while visits the palace and some significant households. Have heard that he visits shouting, "Are there any kids who do not listen to parents?", "Are there any kids who do not behave?". If children misbehave, parents threaten that they would call Hanuman Pandaram and hand them over to him. When the child was about two years old, he once saw a big monkey tail protruding out from a nearby gate while he was taken back home from somewhere. Those days, the servants, aides and the workers who serve the household used to address the child with a respectful title "Kochangunnu". On that occasion, he heard one of them shout, "Hide fast, Kochangunnu is coming", and glimpsed a figure with a big tail sneak inside the nearby gate. After a few years, once the child asked his mom about that big-tailed monkey, she wondered how he remembered something that happened when he was too young to memorise. I was not fortunate to see them again as that 'species' later went extinct.
I have watched lots of Kathakali performances, and the child loathed it. Often, he's taken to the periodic performance at Victoria Jubilee Town Hall, probably because he didn't reveal his disinterest. He would be carried on the shoulder by one of those aides to return home, as his dad is keen to watch the whole episode, and the child would be dozy by the time the show gets over.
There were some unique, entertaining visitors whom the child eagerly awaited. One of them is 'Bhagavathar', an entertainer who sings and dances. He acts as a jester too. He entertains the kids in the palace and visits us about once a month. His costume is a mix of traditional and Western. A khaki suit jacket above a white shirt on top and a white dhoti (thar mundu / anthareeyam) below had a tonsured head with a long tuft of hair left on top, folded and tied. He sang songs without any significant meaning and danced in a circular motion, as the kid watch, amused, with a smile. I only remember the line "Manjulangi kunjulangi" of the lyrics. After his performance, he's served lunch, the same food that we have at home. Following the lunch, like a vote of thanks speech, he showers praises on mom and equates her to Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth and Beauty).
The other favourite visitor is an old lady. Probably an octogenarian; she's very fair and has snow-white hair. She was the music teacher at Satelmond Palace. I still don't know her real name as I called her 'Gunavati'. Gunavati means a lady with all goodness. Whenever she visits us, as a ritual before leaving, she too spends some time praising mom, and the child usually hears her repeatedly say 'Gunavati'. Initially, he assumed she's calling her Ganapati, the elephant-headed Hindu God. He thought, like Bhagavathar calling her Lakshmi, she's calling her Ganapati until it was cleared and explained by his mom. Gunavati used to cuddle the kid and sing songs meant for girls, so it's evident that her students in Satelmond were girls.
When he was two or three, he was taken to the movie theatres to watch rereleased great old classic movies like 'The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Samson and Delilah, and African Safari'. That duty assigned to one of his uncles, who was then in his teens. The very next day after watching 'The Sound of Music' for the first time (I have watched it three more times later), as the child was sitting under a table at home humming 'Do-Re-Mi ', he saw his dad with an amused smile, gesturing to mom to listen.
Once in a while, dad takes the child to the British Library. The child loved the smell of those new books and calmly watched his dad choose the right books, like Super Duck, Plastic Man and Pinocchio. Later, the stories are read aloud by his dad, and the child eagerly peeks at the illustrations in the book and pictures them in his imagination.
There's a large wooden chest at home to store rice and provisions, which also acts as a seat and platform. When the child was four years old, he was made to stand on it one day and dressed in new outfits. Then, both parents happily announced that it would be his first day at school.
At the nursery of Holy Angels Convent, the child found the liveliness interesting but got irritated with those weeping and wailing kids around. The doors, windows and the lower half of the white-washed walls were painted in deep green enamel. The place had a mingled smell of milk, plastic, lacquer and fresh paint. There were brightly coloured cubes and cones, colourfully lacquered rings of different diameters, rocking toy horses and duck boxes, a sandbox with small red pails and spades, and many other toys. Everything fascinated the child, but like at home, he found a window at a corner as his favourite place. It faced a granite wall a few feet away, with a view of some greenery of moss and weeds. More than the toys, he was more interested in watching the ladybirds in the moss-laden wall and the bugs, beetles and butterflies in the plants below. After tasting a strip of peeled green paint from the window, the child was busy till noon, observing the 'wildlife' outside.
He was taken home at lunch break. As in the morning, his beaming parents lifted him to stand on the storage chest and asked him whether he liked the place and want to go there again. He said "Yes" and saw them elated at the reply. But, for the poor kid, his experience at the place was utterly disappointing in the afternoon. All the kids were made to lie down on the floor, on straw mats, and compelled to sleep. Sister Atlee was in charge, and she held a wooden ruler in her hand with which she would tap if anybody raises their head. Sister Atlee looks very much like Oliver Hardy in nun's attire. From the ground zero perspective, the child could see her towering figure holding the ruler in her right hand, like a music conductor with a baton, waving both hands and loudly singing, "Rain, rain go away, little Johnny wants to play".
Exasperated, the child slept quietly in soliloquy singing, Sister Atlee go away; this little kid doesn't want to kip.

The day had started with an incredible sun pillar (posted 2 days ago), after which the skies clouded up. By the time we saw our first and only moose (yesterday's offering), the light was soft, verging on dull. When we finally reached the hills - as far south as the road goes - and got up to a high lookout, the light was about to change again.
It happened shockingly fast. The dense cloud cover blew off; the landscape was soon drenched in sunshine. Within ten minutes the entire landscape was transformed. Here, the change is starting. I don't think I captured it very well - the change. George might have done better as he was rolling video; we could see cloud shadows moving across the frozen ground.
We had reached the halfway point of our outing; this is where we turned around to head back. You can see part of the road we had travelled, in the valley below. Beyond it, seen only via the shrubby vegetation along its banks, is the winding, snaky, threadlike Frenchman River, flowing south (right to left).
Tomorrow I'll show the road we were on when I made this shot.
Sometimes the drive home is uneventful, but not on this day. Wildlife encounters are often unexpected, always appreciated, and a good one was waiting for us. Check in the day after tomorrow to see what we saw.

The branched stem is usually densely to occasionally occupied by fine, split-up, rough trichomes, some specimens are completely hairless. The petiole itself is inconspicuous, winged, 10 (rarely to 15) mm long, sometimes the leaves are almost sessile. The partial leaves are linear-filiform to narrow linear with a width of 0.5 to 1 (rarely to 1.7) mm; the tips are pointed, hardened, but not particularly sharp. It is a lovely planta and even a more lovely flower. A flower of simple and great beauty.

ENGLISH
The fluffy pappus bristles are 11–13 mm long. After flowering and setting seed, it dies.
A Pacific sea nettle (Chrysaora fuscescens) drifts through deep blue water at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma; Washington.
Cosmos bipinnatus, commonly called the garden cosmos or Mexican aster, is a medium-sized flowering herbaceous plant native to Mexico. The species and its varieties and cultivars are popular as an ornamental plant in temperate climate gardens.
It naturalized in scattered locations across North America, South America, the West Indies, Italy, Australia, and Asia, where it is a garden escape (introduced species) and in some habitats becoming a weed.
Cosmos bipinnatus is considered a half-hardy annual, although plants may reappear via self-sowing for several years. The plant height varies from 2–4 ft (0.61–1.22 m). The cultivated varieties appear in shades of pink and purple as well as white.
Its foliage is finely cut into threadlike segments. When flowering, the plant can become top heavy. This problem is alleviated when grown in groups, as the bipinnate leaves interlock, and the colony supports itself.

There it is... a parachute-like flower with long curling shiny purplish filaments. And it's one foot across! Outrageous and unforgettable!
The flowers are purplish white, nodding on long pedicels, 2 bracts broadly ovate and winglike, 2 smaller bracts perpendicular to the others, black, greenish or reddish. Bracteoles threadlike, 6 - 8 inches long. Leaves basal, lanceolate, glossy dark green blade tapering down the petiole.
The genus Tacca, which includes the Bat flowers and Arrowroot, consists of 10 species of flowering plants in the order Dioscoreales, native to tropical regions of Africa, Australia, and southeastern Asia. In older texts, the genus was treated in its own family Taccaceae, but the 2003 APG II system incorporates it into the family Dioscoreaceae. Taccaceae is native to Malaysia.

The Panorpidae are a family of scorpionflies. This family contains more than 480 species. They are 9–25 mm long.
These insects have four membranous wings and threadlike antennae. Their elongated faces terminate with mouthparts that are used to feed on dead and dying insects, nectar, and rotting fruit. While in larval form, they scavenge by consuming dead insects on the ground.
Moments after photographing the Purple Martins (previous image), I noticed this large, cool-water jellyfish just off the wharf. Most descriptions suggest this species attains a maximum diameter of about two feet, which fits the one in the above photo, although earlier in 2019 a far more massive specimen was seen and photographed in BC waters (and created quite a social media stir). Unlike other jellyfish, they are relatively harmless to humans, their sting comparatively mild. I would not recommend touching one, though. It feeds primarily on smaller jellies.
As a photographer, I seem to vacillate between artist and scientist. I've was never careful or methodical enough to become a scientist, though; I just want to know how things work, interact, change, fit together. Here, I was in "artist mode", looking at texture, shape, and colour. As I leaned out over the water for this shot, I thought it was incredibly beautiful: the rich, creamy-yellow of the bell; the long threadlike tentacles stretching out a good 15 feet. The water itself reflected clouds and parts of the wharf. The soft light produced an almost dreamlike rendition, like a watercolour. Which, in a way, it was.

BLUE-MANTLED THORNBILL Chalcostigma stanleyi. We discovered a Blue-mantled Thornbill gathering nest lining material for its nest in the páramo (above treeline) at the Papallacta Pass [at an altitude of about 4,200 meters (13,780 feet)] to the east of Quito in the Andes of northern Ecuador on October 26, 2016. We observed and photographed this hummingbird for about 30 minutes beginning at 2:46 in the afternoon.
The three images on the left show the thornbill gathering threadlike white nest lining material from grasses growing on an earthen bank. Repeatedly, after gathering a bill full of this material, the hummingbird would fly about 200 feet to its nest. The nest (image at the right) was hidden among dried grass blades that were hanging down from a large clump of grass at the edge of a narrow ravine about 6 feet deep. The grass blades belong to a type of tall grass that grows in dense, rounded clusters in the paramo of Ecuador.
The Blue-mantled Thornbill belongs to the hummingbird family Trochilidae and lives in the páramo in the Andes of Ecuador, Perú and Bolivia.

Species in the genus Oedemera include slender, soft-bodied beetles of medium size, between 5 and 20 mm of length. Their colours may be bright and metallic (green, golden, copper), black and yellow and brown and black. The jaws are bifid at the apex, the last segment of maxillary palps is narrow and elongated, the antennae are long and threadlike. The elytra of most species are narrowed behind exposing part of the hind wings. The pronotum lacks lateral edges and is much narrower than elytra. The tibiae have two apical spines, in most species the hind femora of males are strongly dilated.
The species of the genus Oedemera feed on pollen and nectar and their body is covered with abundant pubescence on which pollen grains remain attached, thus contributing to pollination of the plants they frequent.
The species of the subgenus Oncomera fly at dusk and at night, visiting the flowers and inflorescences of aromatic shrubs and various plants.
There it was... parachute like with long purple filaments dotted with tiny drops of water. And the flower is one foot across!
And here I was, with my camera around my neck, groping around in the steamy hot Rare Plant House searching for a metal tag to identify this amazing flower extravaganza! And, it was Dog Day so I had my pup Honey watching me, tipping her head to the right and the left curious.
The flowers are black to purplish white, nodding on long pedicels, 2 bracts broadly ovate and winglike, 2 smaller bracts perpendicular to the others, black, greenish or reddish. Bracteoles threadlike, 6 - 8 inches long. Leaves basal, lanceolate, glossy dark green blade tapering down the petiole.
The genus Tacca, which includes the Bat flowers and Arrowroot, consists of ten species of flowering plants in the order Dioscoreales, native to tropical regions of Africa, Australia, and south-eastern Asia. In older texts, the genus was treated in its own family Taccaceae, but the 2003 APG II system incorporates it into the family Dioscoreaceae. Taccaceae is native to Malaysia.
