They make such great images and easy to shoot as hovering allows one to focus.

.... before you go into the desert, bring plenty of fluids. I thought two bottles of Merlot would be enough, but no one thought to bring a corkscrew. Send help!!!

They live in an animal sanctuary somewhere outside of my city. Glad there is such a place out there for abandoned animals.

Carouge à épaulettes - Red-winged Blackbird

Good morning everyone. I know, normally I post a series on a selected bird on Fridays, but due to time constraints just a single pic today of a male Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus). Which along with a female, returned just this past week and I'm hoping they nest nearby again as they did last year.

For those of you not familiar with this bird, it's quite large for a woodpecker and ranges in length from 15.7 - 19.3 inches (40 - 49 cm) with a wingspan of 26 - 29.5 inches (66 - 75 cm). About as big as a Crow, although more slender.

To give you an idea of how big it is, if I was photographing a Downy Woodpecker from this same spot I would have had the focal length set between 450 - 630mm. At 280mm you might get the impression I was literally on top of the bird when I wasn't.

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day and weekend.

I went to see if I could find some migrating warblers, and instead got an Osprey show. Nine Ospreys showed up at the same time over Klineline pond, fishing, circling, and vocalizing. That made me wonder if Ospreys travel together when they migrate. After a few minutes, five Bald Eagles showed up and made it quite clear the Ospreys were not welcome in the neighborhood. Some of them left, but a few stayed.

“They may attract fish by dipping their bill into the water and vibrating it rapidly, creating a disturbance in the water that mimics motions made by prey of the fish.”

“Before the leaves can mount again

To fill the trees with another shade,

They must go down past things coming up.

They must go down into the dark decayed.”

Ah yes!!! Those famous words from the movie Poltergeist work very nicely to announce the return of the night stalkers. Not sure if we are allowed to go out do things like photography, but I did want to let everyone know that the Yellow-crowned Night Herons have returned to our area. When I finished my walk last night, I saw one perched on a powerline and saw two more glide into the drainage ditch and take up station. They are here and likely headed north to a pond of waterway near you.

This photo was taken on Horsepen bayou.

When they get hot they hold their mouth open as a cooling system. You can clearly see the blood vessels in their open beak, providing heat exchange.

They would need feathers, like this one!

they don't make 'em like they used to ...

They're intent on eating and mating. And are not as "flighty" as they normally are. Not sure that's a good thing but I so appreciate being able to watch & marvel at them from just an inch or two away. 💓

The first Red Mason Bee (Osmia bicornis) males have started emerging from our garden bee-hotels. Something I always look forward to.

The warm August sun comforts this beautiful pair. They look like they belong together. I didn’t want to cut them to display in the house so I just let them alone. Wonderful colors and shade as a pair. I thought “They’re Together” for a reason better than being displayed in my home. Gratitude and Kindness got the best of me and I let them be. Thanks for viewing my work.

It used to be Unsaleable. Then, Impossible. Now, Indubitable. This film is for documenting THE NEXT MOVEMENT but I just had to take it out for a little test run.

A happy preview for gardeners who live in the north, hold on they're coming! Planting seeds and waiting for them to grow is like watching paint dry. You plant, they germinate and grow, then you pinch and they grow more, then you pinch again! All to help the plant become stronger and bushier for more blooms. Then they go in the ground and go to work feeding pollinators.

Happy Monday!

I should have said, "I'm back!" The Steller's Jays are always here, anxiously awaiting for peanuts. I googled to see how long they lived and their average life span is 13-15 years. Wish I could identify them.

They are a dime a dozen, but still hard to get a shot. Fast little guys. Peace Valley Park Doylestown Pa.

They were holding art classes for children at the Souq Waqif Art Center. This was at 10 or 11 at night because it was Ramadan and it was something like 115 degrees F during the day. This was a multi-story building. Through the coloanade on each side of this main space was a corridor leading to all of the other spaces and rooms. The corridor was lined with art, mostly paintings, from the local artists.

Super Sunday to you my friend.
