The Pool in Central Park, Nov. 17, 2020.

Taken at 'The Pool' in Melbourne, South Derbyshire.

Not been out and about much recently, due to the rain and COVID restrictions, so as today was going to be quite sunny for the morning at least we went to one of our local patch sites on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border. for our birding walk.

We had the place to ourselves till around 11:30 when it got a little busier, so we left with lots of shots in the can

Gadwall making a splash at The Pool in Central Park, New York City.

In a world where male ducks sport gleaming patches of green, red, or blue, the Gadwall's understated elegance can make this common duck easy to overlook. Males are intricately patterned with gray, brown, and black; females resemble female mallards, although with a thinner, darker bill.

Gadwall are about the same size as Mallards. Gadwall have a fairly large, square head with a steep forehead. The bill is noticeable thinner than a Mallard's. Male Gadwall are gray-brown with a black patch at the tail. Females are patterned with brown and buff. Females have a thin orange edge to their dark bills. In flight, both sexes have a white wing patch that is sometimes visible while swimming or resting.

We don't tend to think of ducks as pirates, but Gadwall often snatch food from divine ducks as they surface.

We know the right time to go to get the lighting conditions we want, and in particular visit to see if the Wood duck is still around.

Haven't managed to get out this week so far, so after checking the weather forecast last night, we decided a local trip was in order.

These were taken at 'The Pool ' Melbourne on the border of Leicestershire and South Derbyshire. Prime purpose being to re find the Drake Wood Duck we saw at a distance last week, unfortunately we didn't as checked over 2/3 of the way round, the last third was too muddy and we were slipping al over the place. but it did enable us the get these shots.

Again had the place to ourselves until about 11:30, the light was going so we left.

Only a few small areas of open water, otherwise frozen solid.

One of the most beautiful spots in Central Park is simply called "The Pool". It lies in the northwest corner of the park, between 100th and 103rd streets. The north end of the park is the most forested (and on the day I visited, the least crowded), the place with the best opportunity to observe and enjoy wildlife.

Originally a small stream, called Montayne's Rivulet, was dammed to create the pond. Today clean city water flows into The Pool.

(By the way, there is a fine swimming pool and recreation area farther south in the park.)

Central Park is a large park (843 acres, 3.41 sq, km) in midtown Manhattan. Established in 1857, it was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead (American) and Calvert Vaux (English). Central Park, visited by over 37.5 million people annually, offers almost every type of outdoor activity.

We normally go early morning, but that wasn't possible today.

We noticed the 2 pairs of Goosander (Mergus merganser) but they were heading towards the other end, so we didn't pursue, we concentrated of the birds feeding in front of us.

There is a pair of ♂

Red-crested Pochards too, but I have so many shots of these I don't need anymore, until they do something I haven't seen before.

New arrivals since our last visit and certainly having an effect on the ♀, no sign of the 1st winter ♂ we saw last visit

Lovely bright morning so decided to visit here to get some better shots of the goosanders we saw last week.

First time out with Grandson since last March.

We meet at Staunton Harold Reservoir to see if we could find the Ring-necked Duck, but we couldn't, so we moved onto Melbourne.

The light was very good, but a bit contrasty.

Not much there yet but I will get a lot better as Autumn and Winter approach.

These ducks are in the 'Sawbill' family and if you look at it large, you will see where they get their name from

I have come across this bird/type before, at Thornton Reservoir in Leicestershire on the 26th April 2021, it only stayed a day has it wasn't there the following day when we looked for it again.

You can imagine my surprise when walking back to the car I observed it getting out of the water following a male Tuftie. I took many shots of it (I only got two at Thornton) to provide evidence of ID.

At The Pool in Central Park, Nov. 6, 2025

This is 15 minutes from us and we go here when the forecast predicts morning sun. when afternoon sun is forecast we would go to Swithland Reservoir in Leicestershire, which is 8 minutes from us.

The problem with this strategy is you get the same birds, but we can't go any further due to COVID.

In between our two visits to Staunton Harold Reservoir, for the R-nD, we popped down the road to 'The Pool' in Melbourne, also in Derbyshire, were this shot was taken.

The light was poor, and this bird was feeding near the overflow the shadiest part as well.

At first glance you would id it as a female, but I thinks it's a first winter male in moult. The crimson coloured bill put me on to it.

Most ducks have sexual dimorphism, were the female plumage is totally different to the male, with juveniles having female plumage until there first moult, when they start to display gender specific plumage, in some species this can take a number of moults to achieve

We know the right time to go to get the lighting conditions we want, and in particular visit to see if the Wood duck is still around.

As you can see it still is but was extremely reluctant to come out today by staying in the deep shade under the overhanging trees.

Hope to see it again in spring next year.
