After arriving back home from Melbourne the light was terrible, so we were planning to stay in, but after lunch the light returned so we decided to check on the Smew at Swithland Reservoir about 8 minutes from us.

We weren't expecting to see it, so I went scanning it usual patch and left camera in car. I got it almost straight away and it was closer than before, rushed back to get my camera, but couldn't relocate it, and when I did it was further out took a couple of record shots to prove it was still there.

Ruby Beach - One of the most well-known and highly anticipated beaches to visit along the Olympic Coastline (US-101). Located about 25 miles from Forks on the southwest coast of the Olympic Peninsula, named after the Ruby-like crystals that wash up onto the beach.

The light was beautiful this afternoon, so we went to Swithland to see if the Great Egret was showing, it wasn't, so re-routed to Melbourne.

Lovely bright morning so decided to visit here to get some better shots of the goosanders we saw last week.

Checked the weather forecast last night and rechecked this morning - Sun all day was promised.

It was full sun when we left our home but when we got to Melbourne (10 miles away) no where to be seen.

The birds were about, now at least 2 pairs of Goosander, but the light didn't get the memo and was very variable with little sun.

This is 15 minutes from us and we go here when the forecast predicts morning sun. when afternoon sun is forecast we would go to Swithland Reservoir in Leicestershire, which is 8 minutes from us.

The problem with this strategy is you get the same birds, but we can't go any further due to COVID.

First time out with Grandson since last March.

We meet at Staunton Harold Reservoir to see if we could find the Ring-necked Duck, but we couldn't, so we moved onto Melbourne.

New arrivals since our last visit and certainly having an effect on the ♀, no sign of the 1st winter ♂ we saw last visit

Some parts of 'The Pool' near the outflow don't get as much light, but the birds come closer as it's much narrower, this shot was taken there.

Weather forecasts not conclusive, so decided to go local in case it turned out unsuitable. We shouldn't have worried the light was great and didn't cloud over until early afternoon. This was our first stop 'The Pool' in Melbourne South Derbyshire.

Only a few small areas of open water, otherwise frozen solid.

This bird was swimming around in a very small piece of open water, continually bumping into the edges and getting frustrated, it then realised how to get out.

Can't decide if I like this vertical better or one of the previous landscapes.

By the way, I found out that the Sentinel was a huge pine tree that stood near the rear of the pool as if it were a sentry on guard. It was blown over in a hurricane in 1938. They took a sixty foot section of the pine, and with other trees that were blown down, made a footbridge to protect and preserve it.

A quick visit turned into a two hour wander around, trying to get to take advantage of the super but changeable light.

We know the right time to go to get the lighting conditions we want, and in particular visit to see if the Wood duck is still around.

An afternoon at 'The Pool' in Melbourne, South Derbyshire.

We normally go early morning, but that wasn't possible today.

We noticed the 2 pairs of Goosander (Mergus merganser) but they were heading towards the other end, so we didn't pursue, we concentrated of the birds feeding in front of us.

There is a pair of ♂

Red-crested Pochards too, but I have so many shots of these I don't need anymore, until they do something I haven't seen before.

Not been out and about much recently, due to the rain and COVID restrictions, so as today was going to be quite sunny for the morning at least we went to one of our local patch sites on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border. for our birding walk.

We had the place to ourselves till around 11:30 when it got a little busier, so we left with lots of shots in the can

Great Blue Heron taking shelter at The Pool in Central Park, NYC.

Whether poised at a river bend or cruising the coastline with slow, deep wingbeats, the Great Blue Heron is a majestic sight. This stately heron with its subtle blue-gray plumage often stands motionless as it scans for prey or wades belly deep with long, deliberate steps. They may move slowly, but Great Blue Herons can strike like lightning to grab a fish or snap up a gopher. In flight, look for this widespread heron’s tucked-in neck and long legs trailing out behind.

Largest of the North American herons with long legs, a sinuous neck, and thick, daggerlike bill. Head, chest, and wing plumes give a shaggy appearance. In flight, the Great Blue Heron curls its neck into a tight “S” shape; its wings are broad and rounded and its legs trail well beyond the tail.

Great Blue Herons appear blue-gray from a distance, with a wide black stripe over the eye. In flight, the upper side of the wing is two-toned: pale on the forewing and darker on the flight feathers. A pure white subspecies occurs in coastal southern Florida.

Great Blue Herons have specialized feathers on their chest that continually grow and fray. The herons comb this “powder down” with a fringed claw on their middle toes, using the down like a washcloth to remove fish slime and other oils from their feathers as they preen. Applying the powder to their underparts protects their feathers against the slime and oils of swamps.

This female was following one of the males continually and kept posturing at him like the pre mounting display, but its far to early, she was very vocal too.

If anyone knows what going on I would love to know.
