About five million[4][5][6][7][8] people live in the Barcelona metropolitan area. It is also the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea. Le plus célèbre des temples de Luang Prabang, le Vat Xieng Thong, ou temple de la cité royale, fut construit en 1560 par le roi Sitthathirat. Jusqu'en 1975, la famille royale avait coutume de s'y rendre depuis le Palais par voie fluviale. C'est la raison pour laquelle l'escalier qui conduit au temple depuis le Mékong est si majestueux. Le Vat Xieng Thong, tout comme le Vat Mai, fut épargné par les troupes du Pavillon Noir. La légende raconte que le chef de la troupe fut élevé dans le temple quand il était enfant et qu'il le trouvait trop beau pour le détruire. Avec sa toiture à trois pans qui descend presque jusqu'au sol, le Vat est le pur exemple du style architectural religieux de Luang Prabang. À l'arrière du sim, une mosaïque sur fond rouge représente l'Arbre de la vie. Plusieurs chapelles et stupas sont construits autour du temple principal. L'un de ces sanctuaires abrite un Bouddha couché du XVIe siècle qui fut exposé à Paris lors de l'exposition coloniale de 1931. Un bâtiment plus récent peint en doré renferme un char funéraire royal de 12 m de haut.
