After how detailed the lace and embroidery collection was, I had high hopes for the textile collection. Unfortunately, what is on display is not labeled at all in any way, and most of it is not available for viewing except by prior written arrangement, which I don't even know if I would be eligible for. Look! This one has a nice fleur-de-lys on it!

This was a textile assignment from my sophomore year. We had to do about 300 sketches of different types of things; abstract, fluid, typographic, etc. Then pick 3 to use. We then created rules for ourselves, such as, place the first sketch in the center, duplicate and rotate 90 degrees to the left and move down 3 inches and to the right 1 in. Repeat. After the rules were created, we then followed the rules to create the designs.

- Title: Textile Design

- Size: 14X10"

- Material: black straw, acrylic paint, bird's feather, film sheet, watercolor, glue gun

- Year: 2012

- Work description: I expressed snakeskin using various materials.

I expressed snakeskin by cutting black straws into different heights and erecting them or arranging them transversely and gluing them to a wine colored background using a glue gun to express the texture of snakeskin. The remaining part of the background was filled with birds’ feathers, watercolors and acrylic paint.

A piece of work from the Textiles taster week. This collage was made to look at the textures that I could use for my final piece.

This piece followed on from our initial observational shell drawings. I used inspiration from the shapes and textures of the shells to produce this batik and ink piece with hand and machine stitching details.

I like the way the old sign has rusted, but been left there, the fonts of the old sign. What was particularly striking was that this sign is outside a store that is an uphosltery place, the sign is still a 'working' sign. The sign has been updated. You can see the traces of older words. But even the new version seems old not cleaned or cared for. The whole town felt neglected like the sign

Some dry cleaning jobs left over from, oh, the 1940s through 1960s. Maybe they realized how hideous they were and never came back for them.

For my Textiles free project I wanted to make my own roll-top bag since I don't have $200 to throw at expensive messenger bag companies. Holds up really well considering I've never sewn before.
