Textiles Unit. Brief: On the Sea Shore

This picture shows a detail from an A2 handmade felt piece. From my developmental work experimenting with different textiles, I enjoyed making felt the most and I thought it best translated my interpretation of the brief. I have machine stitched detail into the felt and also added beads and wool to create the shell shapes and the water and seaweed effects.

This piece was chosen for display in Chelmsford Cathedral to represent our school, along with some of my prints.

A colorful swedish wall hanging in our home that depicts Staffanvisan, or Staffan's song, usually sung as part of the Lucia celebrations in December.

The Museum-Workshop is housed in one of the first, and most ancient, Franciscan dwellings in Italy, dating to around the year 1212 when Francis (Francesco) of Assisi (he was made a saint in 1228) and his disciples went to nearby Perugia to preach the Gospel and needed a place to live and pray. The Church of Saint Francis in the Field became the Women’s Church of Saint Francis in the year 1252, when the convent was passed down to the Benedictine Sisters who used hand looms to make textiles. The building had its ups and downs until 1821 when it became an educational facility for girls from homes experiencing poverty, employing up to 300 at a time. They produced unbleached silk items from their spinning mills that received international awards.

During my first semester of my foundation course, I was very much in the experimental stage of my studies. Our first semester was comprised of weekly projects in different types of art, from fashion to fine art and it was during the fashion week where I was introduced to the sewing machine, working with different fabrics to create compositions and textures. In my free time, I produced a series of experimental outcomes such as linear compositions or images using artists as my influence.
