nrhp # 69000351- Tobacco baron Lewis Ginter planned the development of the hotel as a premier property in the city of Richmond, capital of the state. It was designed in the Spanish Baroque Style by Carrère and Hastings, noted national architects based in New York, who later designed the New York Public Library. Construction began in 1892 and the hotel opened for business in 1895. After a fire gutted the interior of the hotel in 1901, it had a lengthy restoration. It reopened in 1907. It has received restorations and upgrades of systems through the years.
Patrons have included presidents (William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin D. Roosevelt), writers, and celebrities, including Henry James, Charles Lindbergh, The Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, and Elvis Presley.[7] For many decades, the hotel was the home of Historic Garden Week.
In his autobiography, The Moon's A Balloon (1972), Academy Award-winning actor David Niven described a trip from New York to Florida in the late 1930s, when he decided to spend the night at the Jefferson Hotel. Niven said that, as he was signing the guest registry in the lobby, his eyes snapped open with amazement when he noticed a full-sized alligator swimming in a small pool located six feet from the reception desk.[8] The alligators at the Jefferson became world famous. Old Pompey, the last alligator living in the marble pools of the Jefferson's Palm Court, survived until 1948.[9] Bronze statues of the alligators now decorate the hotel. Its restaurant, Lemaire, has a theme of alligator motifs.
Local urban legend has it that tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, who became a national sensation, was discovered while working as a bellhop at the hotel. This is not likely. When the Jefferson Hotel opened in 1895, Robinson (then 16) was already touring with traveling shows on the black theater circuit.
Another urban legend is that the grand staircase was featured in the film Gone with the Wind (1934). This is not true. But, according to the hotel's concierge, author Margaret Mitchell stayed at the Jefferson during the time she was writing the novel. Her description of the staircase is said to be inspired by the one in the hotel.
The 1981 American film My Dinner with Andre, featuring Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, was shot entirely inside the hotel and its restaurant.

The City Reliquary, at 307 Grand Street, is a window museum. Floridian transplant Dave Herman's streetside collection started when he painted directions to local Willliamsburg attractions on his the corner of his building. Using a former corner storefront, Dave began to display New York City artifacts behind window guards on two sides. He added a taped recording detailing the collection, which can be played by hitting a button.
In 2006, the City Reliquary opened an actual, enterable museum just a few blocks away at 370 Metropolitan Avenue. Some of the highlights of the collection include architectural remnants of city buildings, Statue of Liberty memorabilia, a geological display of New York’s underground composition, and a 1939 World’s Fair exhibit. The City Reliquary also celebrates local character by displaying the unique findings of New York-based collectors.
I couldn't pass these up, really. They are the bigger cards, nabbed on Etsy the day the seller posted them. You can create a variety of sentences using two or more cards.

To fear is one thing.
To let fear grab you by the tail and swing you around is another.

Fear Not is a community-based art project that creates an anti-fear environment both on the street and in art spaces. The ongoing exhibition will include over 150 images of Fear Not Indirect Mail that has been delivered on the streets of San Francisco, Oakland, Brisbane, Austin, Chicago, Nashville, Kapa’a, and Wailua in the United States, Karlsruhe in Germany, and Florence and Milan in Italy, and London in England will be on view. Fear Not Indirect Mail involves participants writing anti-fear messages on postcards that are turned into magnets and placed somewhere out in the community (on bus stops, street signs, etc.) for someone else to find.
Jennifer Maria Harris: "I have shown my work in traditional art venues for many years, but I have also always created artworks that exist outside of those spaces and that invite and involve people from all walks of life, even some who might not feel comfortable in, or interested in, a gallery or museum.
In the fall of 2007 I read an interview in The Sun magazine with Irish poet and philosopher John O'Donohue. The interview focused on questions of spirituality and creativity, and along the way it mentioned that the phrase "Do not be afraid" appears 366 times in the Bible. I imagined the person who had gone through over a thousand pages looking for that one message, and it made me think about how we are constantly making choices with regard to filtering the information around us, whether that's information from the Bible or another religious text, from friends and family, or from our own thoughts. That made me interested in creating a project that would make those choices more transparent.
As human animals, it is natural for us to choose to focus on and communicate about what to be afraid of. In our current culture, where we are surrounded by an overwhelming amount of information from around the globe, this results in an equally overwhelming amount of fear-oriented messages, both in our mass media and in the information we share with each other.
The Fear Not project seeks to address this culture of fear, which cuts across communities and contributes to the divisions in our society, by inviting people to consciously deliver anti-fear messages to each other and create a culture of Fear Not. The messages tell people not to be afraid, but I don't think the power behind the message is in the words. It's in the reminder that we can choose to see those words in the world around us. It's in the reminder that we can then choose to pass those words on. It's in the fact that someone else chose to share them with us, without regard for our race, religion, or political beliefs.
In all of these ways, I hope to emphasize how the power to shape our emotional environment, and the kind of world in which we choose to live, lies with us, not with the media or anyone else.
