Dubai’s Anonymous SAMO-esque scrawls in Barsha
In the late 70s, downtown New York became the canvas for a young Jean-Michel Basquiat and his ‘SAMO’ tags. It’s hard to say if Dubai is harbouring a Basquiat in-the-making, but these cryptic, poignant and (in one case) prophetic messages have been popping up all over the Barsha and TECOM neighbourhoods. These have all been documented by Jalal Abuthina.

I had planned to travel to the mountains from León.
But then I was told that only two buses ran on Saturday with one about 5:30 AM and another at 12:30.
At the station I was told that I would have to wait almost 4 hours until a 2:30 departure. Nobody mentioned this 7:30 AM Expreso bus which I had already missed. In the end I was extremely confused and wishing that the day was not so hot and that I spoke better Spanish.
After due consideration, I gave up on the mountains and headed for Masaya via Managua.

This piece of ironwork grabbed my attention as I viewed the large brick wall behind it. I never heard of the Dummy Train so this is what I found on the visitwarrensburg.org website:
Pertle Springs was a showplace in the late 1800s and early 1900s with a carnival-like atmosphere featuring such attractions as amusement rides, a zoo, bear wrestling, horse racing, and a "dummy" railway that was laid soon after 1889. The railway consisted of a steam engine and three open coaches capable of holding 210 people. It was estimated that the train made from eight to twenty round trips daily from Warrensburg's Hotel Estes on Holden Street to Pertle Springs. The train was specially silenced so that it would not disturb the townspeople.
The iron fence is part of an outside seating area for the Java Junction Café, located on 112 North Holden Street.
This manuscript, illustrated with 155 marginal paintings, is one the few surviving “marginal psalters,” in which images provide a pictorial commentary on the Biblical text. Other examples include the Khludov Psalter (ca. 850 CE, Moscow, State Historical Museum, Muz. 129), the Barberini Psalter (ca. 1050 CE, Vat. Barb. Gr. 372), the Theodore Psalter (1066 CE, London, British Library, Add. Ms. 19,352), and a Cyrillic psalter made in Kiev (1397 CE, Saint Petersburg, National Library of Russia, cod. OLDP, F6). The Walters' psalter was apparently copied from the same eleventh-century model as the Saint Petersburg manuscript, as the iconography of the two is very similar.

This is an Ottoman illuminated and illustrated Turkish version of ʿAjāʾib al-makhlūqāt (Wonders of creation) by Zakarīyā al-Qazwīnī (d. 692 AH / 1293 CE), made at the request of the Vizier Murtaza Paşa (Murtaḍá Pāshā) (fl. eleventh century AH / seventeenth CE). The codex was completed in 1121 AH / 1717 CE by Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Shākir Rūzmah-ʾi Nāthānī. There are 444 paintings illustrating the text. The binding is not original to the manuscript.

I took this picture not long after an outer layer of siding was removed from this building. The current exterior siding is made of tin, stamped with a brick pattern, and painted with the signage.
I put this picture up on the blog ages ago, along with a picture of the signage on the end of the building. A lot of people out there like Tru-Ade, because it shows up in my referral logs all the time.

A favourite from my own collection: this is a hybride between my 2 loveaffairs; Lego and Thunderbirds. This shows I'm not crazy; even Lego loves the spaceage of Gerry Anderson! Why? Because in 1965 Tb was suddenly hot in the UK, on tv, in the shops, with boys&girls. Gerry was the only one who used the term '2065', a thousand years later then the actual days the lived back then. Lego used that popularity in this ad to underline you could make even spaceships with Lego. This is almost the only outing into space by Lego, until about 8 years later with their own range of NASA-stuff in blue&white.
