Some early morning thoughts----

I would like to be seen as nostalgic in every way. This includes both my choice of tools that I draw with as well as my materials.

Wealthy individuals of the 19th century often commissioned one-of-a-kind art pieces such as grand pianos. These works of art had such a presence that rooms were designed for them and around them. This idea inspires me greatly. To this extent, when I think of a favorite camera, I came up with two historical models of which I will be making a small series of designs for. The first one is the Voigtlander Brilliant V6. As this is a design done for myself, Instead of creating a space in which to display this camera i propose to create a room inside of it, directly under the focusing hood and behind the viewfinder lens assembly.

This very simple twin lens reflex had the right original design idea which suited me: it had a "hold-all" compartment (terribly named) which held extra filters and a light meter. I propose an upgrade to this, which replaces that compartment's contents with a set of plastic Hong Kong "toy camera" filters (little replicas of classic cameras sold by vending machines) and an interior door which opens up to allow the owner to view the room (my fantasy atelier) inside. There is a secret door behind the tiny bookcase as well as a hidden panel (please see attached photo below) in the wood floor leading down into the actual camera interior. Besides being an exit this is also to allow one to clean and maintain the lens.

My design comes from the famous Dell "Mapback" Detective stories from the 1920's which enthralled me to no end as a young child. I'm also in love with the concept of creating physical entrances into the interior of the camera which parallel the basic idea of the camera as a box with optical entrances. 'Where the light goes, we follow' is my motto.

The Voigtlander Brilliant V6 had troublesome gears in the focusing mechanism which rendered the otherwise fabulous optics to be useless decades later unless you found one in perfect mint condition. However, digitizing it would solve this problem completely and create the space needed inside for this proposed one-of-a-kind book room. Lastly, there is also the humor of having a camera in front of a camera (the toy camera in front of the main camera lens).

This design can be made into a pinhole camera.

Secret panels in bookcases and secret passages in rooms had become overused in detective fiction from the 1890's through the 1920's to the point that famed authors as Ronald Knox decried its further abuse by stating that secret passages should appear only in stories which took place in very old houses or castles (or in this case, cameras).

Note: my little side drawing affixed with yellow tape, as you can see, was penned on the stationary of one of New York's legendary steakhouses, Keen's chop house. If you're in NYC, please sample their double lamb chops with homemade citrus mint jelly, the combination is just out of this world.

MEDITATION

"HE promises HIS followers a final blessing: HIS Peace. This is not just any Peace; Jesus says, “My Peace I Give.” The Peace of Jesus—the Peace that surpasses understanding, the Peace that remains constant even in suffering, the Peace that cannot be stolen or shaken—this is the Peace HE freely gives to us! In a world full of uncertainty and conflict, there is no greater gift than the Peace of Christ…” www.wau.org

Manuscript title: Passover Haggadah

Manuscript summary: This Hebrew manuscript from the 15th century combines liturgical texts and commentaries on the rites that provide the temporal foundation for the observation of Passover. The Passah-Haggadah, adorned with miniatures and rich illustrations, contains the complete liturgical version of the Exodus story. The first part of the manuscript contains the text of the Italian rite, the second part that of the Ashkenazi. This manuscript was written and illuminated by Joël ben Siméon, who signed his work with a Kolophon (f. 34r): I am Joel ben Simeon, called Veibusch Ashkenazi – blessed be his memory – and I am from Cologne, which is on the banks of the Rhine.

In the Tora-San comedy series, Tako is my favorite character. A hilarious signature skit in every film has him fighting with Tora-San over money issues.

This light hearted design for an Octopus-themed musical instrument is an ocarina and a flask for Sake cocktail with black cephalopod ink. When you pucker and play the ocarina, your mouth and lips will be stained black, and the unnecessary puckering will make annoying sounds too! Your mouth will reek of alcohol, but you will not be very drunk, and can offer a fierce fight with Tora-San.

The instrument can be made in a range of sizes (the bass size uses curved tubing for the mouthpiece). The instrument is covered with a paper mâché skin made of vintage 1950's issued 100-yen notes.

Yes this is my lame, scratched, old lame, out of date, malfunctioning, DARE!

Ha I love this:D I think I'm actually going to do a few of these cheesy pick up lines pics. haha. There are so many good ones out there. Doubt most have worked though haha.

TaTaTaTagged! :D All about phones.

1. My contract is up! 2. I'm getting a new one pronto! any suggestions? 3. I like touch screen but want a physical key board. 4. I keep dates and stuff on my phone calendar, always. 5. I have like 100 ringtones. 6. I usually leave it on vibrate though. 7. I hate not being able to have mine in class. 8. I hate not knowing what time it is. 9. Texting is so much better than talking, no awkward silences 10. I can text it pretty darn fast without looking, with a touch screen phone :D

What phone do you have? What should I get? Got any good pick up lines or quotes I could do photos for?

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

Made for Moxie, because I love her.

I had this idea around the same time that I found out she was a Tiger Lillies fan as well, so it made sense to make it especially for her. The text is taken from this song.

I love taking a negative message and turning it into something beautiful. I think that's why I like the Tiger Lillies so much, because some of their songs do the same thing.

The Master Photo Finishers of America distributed this advertising slip in 1926 to promote picture taking at Thanksgiving. The ad's morbid suggestion is that you'd better take snapshots of your family when you get together during the holiday this year because some of them might pass away so that "[n]ext year might be too late."

After I posted this advertisement on Flickr, it was mentioned on PetaPixel and featured by Xeni Jardin on Boing Boing: "Get a load of this print ad from the Master Photo Finishers of America, 1926. . . . Scanned and Flickr'd by Alan Mays, whose photo stream is full of wonderful vintage weirdness."

Posted for the group Macro Mondays where the weekly challenge was to snap macro photos of books/pages.

I believe that this looks pretty good large and on white.

This mysterious collection of images have been discovered within the photographic collections of Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.

Reference: TWCMS -H13098-73-6

The lantern slides are from a series titled 'Psychic Photography From A New Angle' and feature eerie images of the supposedly paranormal and unknown forces caught on camera.

Very little is known of the origins of this collection. The slides were designed to accompany a lecture by a Mr C.P. MacCarthy of 15 Wilkinson Street, Sheffield.

Mr MacCarthy produced the images under test conditions in 1934 in front of an invited committee at 76 Clarkehouse Road, Sheffield. He states the intention was to ‘demonstrate under test conditions Fake Psychic Photography’ to this committee.

Mr MacCarthy states his three reasons for this demonstration.

1.To prove the possibility of Fake under test conditions.

2.To show you cannot be too critical of such phenomena.

3.To indicate the increasing scope for fraud with the probability of genuine spirit photography.

Mr MacCarthy further guarantees ‘in the sum of five pounds, payable to any charitable institution, that no collusion exists, or has existed between myself and any other party in connection with this demonstration.’

Little is currently known of the Psychic demonstration. Who sat on the invited committee? Who was Mr MacCarthy? Why was he investigating Psychic Photography?

Can you help us with this information?

A remarkable 1937 advert issued by London Transport and extolling the organisation's long-standing policy regarding presentation and design, emphasising the use of the Johnston typeface - a variation of which we in London Underground still use today. Interestingly the text claims 1917 as the date of commissioning - we currently say 1913 for commissioning and 1916 for delivery, an interesting discrepancy! The use of the typeface, that is as noted the forerunner of the 'modern' sans-serif typefaces, looks very 'clean' and simple here on the page.

Macro Mondays: Technology theme

Most times I use my iPhone for notes.

The note you see above was found in Jonah Lehrer's book "Imagine" (which I recommend for anyone interested in reading about the creative process). Here is the complete quote by Lehrer:

"In his 1878 book, Human, All Too Human: A Book for Free Spirits, Nietzsche observed:

'Artists have a vested interest in our believing in the flash of revelation, the so-called inspiration... shining down from heavens as a ray of grace. In reality, the imagination of the good artist or thinker produces continuously good, mediocre or bad things, but his judgment, trained and sharpened to a fine point, rejects, selects, connects... All great artists and thinkers are great workers, indefatigable not only in inventing, but also in rejecting, sifting, transforming, ordering.'"

Finally, after over a year and many promises, here is my version of Arkham Asylum.

There’s no need for many explanations here in this text, because I designed an 82-page Making-of-book that explain every little step. And the best part: It’s for free.

You can find all the pages here on flickr or you can download a free PDF-version from Uploaded.to. You don’t need to create an account, just follow this LINK. It takes about 20 - 40 minutes.

Well, I hope you enjoy everything.
