New year's eve was awesome. My friend Sara had made the most delicious 3 course dinner and the 6 of us ate until we couldn't move. At midnight we went to the town's square to watch fireworks. It was so cold but totally worth it.

I'm so excited about the new year! 2009 was my best year so far and I'm convinced 2010 will be even better. There's a lot of changes coming but I just look forward to them. bring it on!

this is stress-relief. it's true, what they say. art never comes from happiness. right now, i'm unhappy.

i'm confused, and unsure, and i may or may not lose my best friend, depending on which i may or may not lose the boy i love. i don't want to have to think. i don't want to have to exist. i don't want to just be.

i wish you could take a break from life, every now and again. god knows i'd be gone loads. but then again, so would everyone else.

I got this (not) lovely comment on one of my images on Flick today:

"Too bad we can't use it. Oh, well. There are more and better out there from people who allow their photos for public use."

if you are a photographer giving your images away for free you are enabling ungrateful pieces of poo like this guy, if your work is good enough to be used for free it's good enough to be paid for! #paytheartist

Thanks to fellow user Lex-O I'm now fully aware of what's going on, and here's my protest.

In case you guys don't know what's going to happen, here's the text I found on his page.

This is a symbolic mark of protest against the new Beta change which Flickr proposes to force upon all users ..

If you wish to make protest, then please only upload a " Black " picture on the 8th December

*** This is available for download should you wish.

With the new platform Beta Team Flickr intend to make further changes that will limit severely the exchanges between users:

1 - There will be no white space below the photo for description, comments or invitations to groups

2 - Difficult to write a comment that contains more than 3 words

3 - We can not see who supports our pics

4 - We can not see in which groups the photo appears

5 - The images of the award will not be visible

6 - The visits will no longer be visible. The latter will only appear in Recent Activity, others will be lost.

7 - For Admin it will become impossible to manage groups so many will close.

8 - Our descriptions, including quotes, links to YouTube or other sites will be hidden

( translated from Italian )

Changes should not delete/destroy/ruin the very factors which caused us to join flickr in the first place ...

"Yahoo has new ideas. flickr is offering 1 TB free space for all accounts. Those who want to be rid of advertisements have to pay.

I appeal you all those who plan to quit, to change your mind and stay. You can make use of your accounts just for storage. Make your accounts private, make this image public and use flickr for storage. You can save on external hard disks.

If we check in to a hotel room seeing it's features, should we bear it without a word of protest if they take away the furniture one by one including the bed ? flickr should know that the people who protest are not against 'changes'.

Changes shouldn't steal away the utilities that made people choose flickr.

Protest ! flickr is not just the property of few people who get paid to serve the people that make it. If they offer 1 TB free space for every account, the salaried people who planned it have advertisements in mind. Many unique special utilities made people like you and me join flickr, and flickr is taking away all what that made us choose it. Now the only special thing in flickr is 1 TB free storage. Let's then make use of it, without caring about flickr's revenue. We can seek better places for what we like, still keep this place for storage. If the 'hotel' stinks and cheated us, make it your warehouse or sty. If this is forced on us, you can make your account private, store everything here; display , share and comment elsewhere.

Thank you.

Users of the English version of Flickr may have got the botton " try our new experience Beta"

This is an incredible regression .....once again

No longer any white space underneath pictures for comments, description, invitations etc....

Everything is gathered in a tiny sidebar to the right of the photo in the Lightbox

All features that allow interaction and sharing have gone so groups might also disappear ......

You may take a look here

yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/224533-flickr-photo-page-beta

If you want to save the groups from a certain death, Please click this blue link and go to vote

yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/224533-flickr-photo-page-beta/...

We had got used (more or less) the first changes, but this time, it is a

total scuttling of Flickr and of its spirit of sharing :(

We can't see who faved our pictures

We can't see the groups the pictures appear in ( except only 8)

Awards images. are not shown

Invitations are not visible except for the last ones (only in "Recent Activity").They're lost.

For admins group management will become a work more and more difficult or even impossible

Groups might close......and groups add visibility to our pictures

Our descriptions including quotes or links to YouTube or other sites are hidden

NO LONGER ANY CONVIVIALITY.. ANY VISIBILITY . NO SENSE

*I specify for those who haven't seen the Beta page;that there is NO

white area under the pictures for descriptions / comments / invitations /

flickr Award Counter

Only a narrow sidebar to the right of the image ,showing ONLY the last 4 comments

White print on a black and depressive background, that hurts the eyes

Unfortunately everything we can do is absolutely useless ....

Unfortunately it is obvious that Yahoo wants to turn Flickr into another social network for teens and young using only tablets and smartphones and whose only interaction is Hi or Lol

Motivated photographers using computers and large screens are no longer interesting users.... ( nor groups since our invitations are only visible on our "Recent Activity "Page....The oldest are lost ....)

How many people know what represents the Beta Page ?? I wonder ?

Only some users of the English version of Flickr ..... but not all of them

All this is very discouraging

Did you know that flickr has been testing a new beta version of flickr?

I haven't actually seen the beta page but I've had it described to me:

"...there is NO white area under the pictures for descriptions / comments / invitations / flickr Award Counter

Only a narrow sidebar to the right of the image ,showing ONLY the last 4 comments

No sense. Hard to write comments exceeding 2 or 3 words

We can't see who faved our pictures

We can't see the groups the pictures appear in ( except only 8 )

Awards images. are not shown in comments : which means that neither members nor admins can check

Admin-Invitations are not displayed ( the last ones are visible ONLY in "Recent Activity").The oldest are lost

For admins , group management will become a work more and more difficult or even impossible

Some groups might close......and groups add visibility to our pictures

They allow us to admire beautiful works and to meet with great photographers.

Our descriptions including quotes or links to YouTube or other sites are hidden

NO LONGER ANY CONVIVIALITY.. ANY VISIBILITY . NO SENSE

In fact this layout specifically targets tablets and smartphones"

_Feedback

Unfortunately everything we can do seems absolutely useless ....

Yahoo and Flickr don't care

Unfortunately it is obvious that Yahoo wants to turn Flickr into another social network for people (mainly teens and young ) using only tablets and smartphones and whose only interaction is Hi or Lol

Motivated photographers still using computers (with photo-softwares) and large screens are no longer desirable customers....

( nor groups since our invitations are only visible on our "Recent Activity "Page....The oldest are lost ....and everything is done to impede their functioning)

Advertising is much much more lucrative than our Pro accounts .......

How many people know what represents the Beta Page ?? I wonder ?

Only some users of the English version of Flickr ..... but not all of them

Users of any other language have not been informed.... amazing No ??

All this is very discouraging

A big special Thank You to Marissa Mayer

Good morning everyone. Featured for Dragonfly Thursday is the Banded Pennant (Celithemis fasciata), which is one of three species of Pennants found here locally along with the Calico and Halloween Pennants. It's usually the second to appear after Calico Pennants, but before Halloween Pennants that usually appear last. But of the three, the Banded Pennant has the shortest flight season and is normally long gone by late summer.

Banded Pennants are very a small dragonfly at only about 1.3 inches (33 mm) in length. Slightly larger than the smaller Calico, but smaller than the much larger Halloween.

As for these photos, they feature mainly immature males and females. No mature males except in the last photo in the comment section. The above composite features an immature male and female, which look very similar to the casual observer. But while it's never absolute, one of the ways to differentiate the tow is the female is more likely to have clear or partially clear wing tips (as seen above on the right), where as the male seen on the left usually has solid dark wing tips.

I hope you enjoy this short series on one of my favorite dragonflies to photograph and find the text in the comment section informative. As always don't forget to click on "more comments" if you don't see the additional pics and text in the comment section. Or you can scroll to them by clicking on the arrow to the right of the above pic in the field of black. And if you want to view any picture in the field of black or comment section large all you have to do is click on it.

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you're having a truly nice week.

The above text is part of the "Whispers Project", located on the east wall of 58 Powell Street, in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver BC. It is an excerpt from a poem by Intrepid Pens collective member Amanda Grondahl.

Amanda Grondahl is a writer/editor and (among other things) the creator of the Intrepid Pens DTES Reading & Writing Society.

WHISPERS PROJECT:

Whispers installed passages from local writers as typographic murals around Vancouver as part of Celebrate Vancouver 125.

Obscured in their isolation the words gain new context from their surroundings and speak for more than a single author. Drawing on the finality of commercial hand-lettering and the immediacy of graffiti, Whispers developed a language which is driven neither by capital nor dissent, but by the inquisitive exploration of human experience in this urban landscape.

Writing was generated and selected for the project in a series of workshops during the summer of 2011 and applied in a number of locations around the city as murals in the spring of 2012.

The Peoples Words:

A free dinner and writing gathering was held open to the public at the Dunlevey Snackbar in order to bring people together to collect their voices as content for the murals. It was well attended by local writers, artists, and members of the Thursdays Writing Collective and the Intrepid Pens DTES Reading & Writing Society. Thanks goes out to Elee Kraljii Gardiner for helping facilitate the writing process.

Expression & Public Space:

The Whispers were designed to reference the scale and style of commercial hand-lettering, but intended to communicate creative content instead of the commercial sales pitch. Enabled by barriers of economy and policy, the medium of advertising appears to have monopolized the realm of large-scale public communication. Despite the term ‘public space’ being commonly accepted as equating a sort of commons of the people, most of the physical property in our city is either privately owned, or highly regulated. While plenty of space has been made available for voices willing to pay (namely advertisers), the simple expression of an individual without economic means is rendered illegal.

Typeface

The typeface used for the Whispers was designed specifically for the project to follow the aesthetics of historical commercial type, including the quirks and irregularities found in many hand painted signs.

THE INTREPID PENS:

The Intrepid Pens is a creative writing workshop and book club based at the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre on Cordova Street in Vancouver. Founder, facilitator and nurturer of the group, Amanda Grondahl encourages the women living with addiction, poverty, and homelessness to engage their creativity and self-expression through writing of their own. She also gives them an opportunity to explore and discuss novels of the group’s choosing. In her own words from her blog she says: ” … how amazing it is when 15 (or so) women get together to talk, read, write, share, laugh, and grow; how group members’ writing has improved; how group members’ confidence is soaring; how some are sharing their stories for the very first time; how beautiful it is that those who struggle with reading or writing are read to by fellow group members – their work transcribed for them, and read aloud by their friends; how we’re learning through reading and healing through writing; how several group members have already been published, and how group members talk with excitement about writing more, learning more, and doing more…” Amanda believes there is a “quiet magic” taking place within the group. She is adamant that the women are as important to her as she might be to them and fondly speaks of “my ladies” as she writes “… we are a little family of writers and readers and friends now. …”

The Intrepid Pens DTES Reading & Writing Society (“The Pens”) provides literacy-based programming for residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). Through a variety of programs, The Pens provides opportunities for guided writing and reading in the DTES because we believe in the power of storytelling (and the sharing, healing, and growing that result) as a real vehicle for change.

The Pens has been offering programming in the DTES since 2008.

The theme of the festival was "Visual Poetry" and specially for the designers working in the field of typography, the festival was created platform "The Image Of Strophe."

With New York City on the verge of dominating the world with a real estate tycoon US Presidential candidate, there's no reason not to continue in this over-the-top mode and send a nice redesign bid for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Stadium.

The main consideration was a pleasing nod to Japanese characteristics, which this design tries in a humble of way to implement. The Japan of modern times as well as of traditional aesthetics are both referenced indirectly through an application of American pop culture. This multi-layered approach is endemic to our design philosophy and our belief is that this sleight-of-hand design might penetrate further to make a wow-factor to the public.

The popular idea of a periodic (the Olympics occur every few years in some city on this globe) crash landing of an alien spaceship, in this instance a friendly American one, references the USS Starship Enterprise whose main saucer and nacelles can be seen from the outskirts of the Japanese capital, as well as from within.

We love the designs of architects Kengo Kuma, Zaha Hadid and Toyo Ito, but can we just be honest for a moment and see that these types of designs are really all about flying saucers making a large crater in the middle of the city with circulation routes.

The iconic starship has been in our consciousness for decades now and is something that will be with us going forward no matter what we do so instead of fighting this desire we might as well feel empowered and fully enjoy being inside it. The port and starboard side nacelles could even be medium-sized airport terminals for sports people and after the Olympics perhaps casino people if such zoning was possible.

The Enterprise saucer shape is excavated deeper into the ground (as if it really crashed) than the other three designs, creating the symbol of a Japanese tea bowl.

Greenery inside rather than outside the stadium would fill the air with the natural smell of tea leaves.

The views from inside the stadium will be truer deep space experiences, and the excavated backfill will simply remain onsite saving greatly in construction costs. This "splash" of landfill will be covered by a top layer of sand, like a Japanese Zen garden, yet it will look from a distance like a massive and gorgeous golf bunker of the quality of the Bethpage Black Championship course of Long Island NY, once home to the U.S. Open. Of course, the only person who could create such a masterpiece spectacle of golf is Donald Trump, who could probably get the construction phases streamlined better than any other team could, and most importantly he can have it all ready and on schedule for the Olympics.

The actual bridge of the starship would be a small set of prime real estate spaces (atelier ying can be gifted the smallest of them, practically a closet) reached by a tiny sky bridge, the kind from where you could get vast views of incoming Klingon Battle Cruisers.

The opening ceremonies could truly now take place in a very modernistic Star Trek Federation arena. Space ship displays of Olympic fires as the raising of starship shields, phasers and other lightworks firing into the sky, etc., one's imagination can see no limits because this is all taking place within the iconic vehicle that spawned much of today's futuristic architectural designs to begin with. I'm sure vast amounts of investment capital from baby boomer Star Trek fans would pose no problem at all. Maybe I can win a free trip to Tokyo for general design research and to finally find for myself a website designer.

Every designer or architect needs to balance work with some down time just to create and draw. This leather pen roll is adapted to an architect's tools as well as some choice Cuban cigars kept in humitubes, along with cigar accessories. A matching leather pocket brief is customized to hold sheets of good quality stock sketching papers that are 4"x7", about the size of a Moleskine landscape sketchbook. When you roll up all the expensive drawing and meditation tools, you can roll the top flap down 2" so that the roll looks like a pack of temple incense. Monogrammed brass plates and a clutch strap suggest a gentleman's breast purse, luxurious and large enough to accommodate an hour or three of quiet rumination and careless sketching. It's function, being composed of two halves is neither serious or silly, but luxurious.
