Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean. It has an area of 6.8 square kilometres (2.6 sq mi) and a northern border with Andalusia, Spain. The Rock of Gibraltar is the major landmark of the region. At its foot is the densely populated city area, home to almost 30,000 Gibraltarians and other nationalities.

In 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, a combined Anglo-Dutch force captured the town of Gibraltar, leading to a permanent exodus of much of the existing population to the surrounding areas of the Campo de Gibraltar. Under the terms of the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in perpetuity. Spain unsuccessfully attempted to regain control in the siege of 1727 and again during the extended Great Siege of Gibraltar, which lasted from 1779 to 1783.
Gibraltar became a key base for the British Royal Navy and played an important role prior to the Battle of Trafalgar and during the Crimean War of 1854–56, due to its strategic location. Its strategic value increased with the opening of the Suez Canal, as it lay on the sea route between the UK and the British Empire east of Suez. In the later 19th century there were major investments in improving the fortifications and the port.
During World War II, Gibraltar's civilian population was evacuated (mainly to London, England, but also to parts of Morocco, Madeira and Jamaica) and the Rock was strengthened as a fortress. Spanish dictator Francisco Franco's reluctance to allow the German Army onto Spanish soil frustrated a German plan to capture the Rock, codenamed Operation Felix. In the 1950s, Franco renewed Spain's claim to sovereignty over Gibraltar and restricted movement between Gibraltar and Spain. Gibraltarians voted overwhelmingly to remain under British sovereignty in the Gibraltar sovereignty referendum, 1967, which led to the passing of the Gibraltar Constitution Order in 1969. In response, Spain completely closed the border with Gibraltar and severed all communication links. The border with Spain was partially reopened in 1982, and fully reopened in 1985 prior to Spain's accession to the European Community.
In a referendum held in 2002, Gibraltarians rejected by an overwhelming majority (99%) a proposal of shared sovereignty on which Spain and Britain were said to have reached "broad agreement". The British government has committed itself to respecting the Gibraltarians' wishes.

Gibraltar's terrain consists of the 426-metre (1,398 ft) high Rock of Gibraltar made of Jurassic limestone, and the narrow coastal lowland surrounding it. It contains many tunnelled roads, most of which are still operated by the military and closed to the general public.

Most of the Rock's upper area is covered by a nature reserve, which is home to around 230 Barbary Macaques (commonly confused with apes), the only wild monkeys found in Europe. This species, known scientifically as Macaca sylvanus, is listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List and is declining. Three quarters of the world population live in the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco. Recent genetic studies and historical documents point to their presence on the Rock before its capture by the British. A superstition analogous to that of the ravens at the Tower of London states that if the monkeys ever leave, so will the British. In 1944 British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, was so concerned about the dwindling monkey population that he sent a message to the Colonial Secretary requesting that something be done about the situation.

Alguna vez, la salud pública fue motivo de orgullo en Vicente López. Desde hace un tiempo, lamentablemente, hace agua. Y lo que podría ser una imagen metafórica es sólo una simple descripción de la realidad que sufren hoy quienes trabajan o concurren para atenderse en el Hospital Houssay, donde cada vez que llueve fuerte hay goteras o se obstruyen los caños que comparten los desagües pluviales y cloacales. Con baños públicos que poco tienen que envidiarle a los de una popular del fútbol de ascenso, el principal centro de salud comunal viene padeciendo en carne propia la falta de atención de los problemas sanitarios.
Todo el sistema de salud está en crisis y el Hospital Houssay no es la excepción. Hay problemas salariales con los médicos y faltan profesionales en varios servicios por la reducción que llevó adelante el Intendente durante los últimos años. Su accionar es una vergüenza que atenta contra la atención al vecino y tiene consecuencias concretas en la gente del distrito.
La referencia tiene que ver con los retrasos para conseguir turnos para los consultorios externos o las demoras en las operaciones programadas que se realizan en el Hospital Houssay. Algo que en sus mejores épocas se conseguía para unos pocos días y que ahora demora semanas por la ausencia de profesionales y de insumos básicos como jeringas o pañales. Hay una falta de estímulo total para los empleados. Hoy los médicos cobran menos que en otros hospitales pese a haberse pasado al régimen provincial en 2005, porque la Comuna decidió no poner en marcha el último aumento. Eso, sumado a las diferencias históricas entre lo público y lo privado, genera que cada vez queden menos médicos.
En concreto, uno de los servicios que sufre la falta de gente capacitada es el de Diagnóstico por Imágenes, donde hay un sólo ecografista, por ejemplo. También hay problemas en Enfermería por la falta de cargos de planta y las diferencias salariales con el sector privado son tan marcadas que hacen que sean cada vez menos enfermeras y mas sobrecargadas en sus tareas.
Otro pauta importante que demuestra la falta de previsión del Intendente en materia de salud tiene que ver con los problemas edilicios del Hospital de la calle Hipólito Yrigoyen, en Florida Este. Es que a las goteras e inundaciones, se le suma los inconvenientes eléctricos y en los ascensores. Hay cosas que son inadmisibles. No puede ser que haya pacientes en la guardia que deben ser atendidos en los pasillos y que, algunos lugares ni siquiera cuenten con una cortina para separar una camilla de la otra. Lo que antes fuera el orgullo de los vecinos de Vicente Lopez, porque nada tenía que envidiarle a un sanatorio privado, hoy sólo se sostiene por la calidez y calidad de sus profesionales. Se supone que Vicente López es uno de los municipios que más recauda y debería brindar un servicio de salud acorde a las circunstancias. En cambio, hoy la salud está enferma, en terapia intensiva y con pronóstico delicado.
Hay que restablecer en forma urgente las prioridades de un área vital para los vecinos. Es que son ellos quienes desde hace un tiempo a esta parte deben sufrir no sólo los inconvenientes que implica atenderse en el centro de salud comunal más importante, sino también los problemas que trae aparejado el cierre de servicios en el Hospital Santa Rosa y en el Geriátrico.
Y dentro de ese cambio de prioridades a nivel comunal van desde cuestiones tan puntuales como, por ejemplo, buscar la recuperación de la confianza perdida en los acreedores, lo que generó un desabastecimiento grave en materia de insumos sanitarios básicos; hasta la posibilidad de poner en marcha un comité ético que defina la creación de servicios tan necesarios como el de Salud Mental, el de Hemodinamia o el de Cirugía Cardiovascular, hoy inexistentes dentro del marco de la política sanitaria municipal de Vicente López.
El principal afectado por esa falta de iniciativa es el Houssay, que alguna vez fue uno de los hospitales más importantes del área Metropolitana, y hoy sufre problemas concretos que requieren de soluciones urgentes.
Por eso, considero que es fundamental restablecer el convenio con la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional para llevar adelante la supervisión y/o reparación de la aparatología, así como también evaluar la compra, el alquiler o el leasing de los equipos de extrema necesidad que no se pueden comprar por su alto costo. También es necesario crear un plan director para el mantenimiento del edificio. Y en ese rubro están incluidas desde la construcción de las escaleras de incendio, hasta la recuperación de los subsuelos, que se inundan cada vez que llueve o suben las napas, y generan un riesgo para los pacientes. En ese sentido además sería importante no sólo la reparación de las terrazas, sino también la implementación de un sistema de acopio de los residuos comunes y de los patológicos en una edificación para tal destino, como exige la ley que actualmente no se cumple.
No hay que dejar de lado que a nivel comunal también queda por delante resolver el tema de los trabajadores. Por eso, considero que hay que establecer prioridades y analizar desde los salarios a la cobertura de cargos. Y la mejor forma de hacerlo sería recrear una mesa de diálogo que bien podría ser la Comisión Permanente de la Carrera Profesional Hospitalaria, creada a partir de la ley 10.471. en donde se podría tratar toda esta problemática, conjuntamente con la Comisión de Salud del Concejo Deliberante.

O Palácio da Alvorada, residência oficial do Presidente da República, foi o primeiro edifício construído em alvenaria na nova capital Brasília, em 30 de junho de 1958. Situado às margens do Lago Paranoá, tornou-se símbolo do movimento moderno da arquitetura do país. Projetado por Oscar Niemeyer, suas colunas tornaram-se símbolo da cidade: forma do brasão do Distrito Federal. O nome ao palácio foi dado por Juscelino Kubitschek, que o justificou dizendo que Brasília era a alvorada de um novo dia para o Brasil. É dito que Juscelino recusou o primeiro projeto feito por Niemeyer, por "falta de monumentalidade", e pediu que o arquiteto refizesse os traços para construir um palácio "que daqui a cem anos ainda seja admirado".
As elegantes colunas de mármore, em forma de aviões, dão a impressão de que o edifício está pousado no solo. São esculturas que proporcionam diversas visões conforme o ângulo pelo qual se olha. O palácio é revestido de mármore e tem sua fachada de vidro. Sua configuração horizontal, arrematada por uma capela que remete às antigas casas de fazenda do Brasil colonial. O formato diferenciado das colunas externas lembram as redes estendidas em varandas, como as que contornam nessas casas. À frente do Palácio existem duas esculturas: "As Laras", de Alfredo Ceschiatti, e "O Rio dos Ritmos", de Maria Martins. Ao lado, uma capela com fachada de Athos Bulcão. Há também um espelho d´água que reflete a construção que dá impressão de estar flutuando sobre as águas. O gramado da frente do palácio é habitado por flamingos, garças e emas. Um pequeno canal, habitado por carpas, separa a residência oficial da rua.
Como todo Palácio... são sete mil metros quadrados de área, e 800 de construção destinada ao presidente. A suíte do casal tem 120 metros quadrados, a biblioteca 150, a piscina olímpica tem sistema de aquecimento, o mezanino tem pé-direito de 9 metros. Há ainda três salas de estar, sala de música, de jantar e uma específica para banquetes. São, em média, 72 funcionários, entre secretários, assistentes, garçons, seguranças e até médicos, 24 horas por dia ao dispor da família presidencial. A visita ao Palácio da Alvorada é realizada às quartas-feiras, das 15h às 17h30. São distribuídas no máximo trezentas senhas.

The Alvorada Palace, official residence of the President, was the first brick building built in the new capital Brasilia, on June 30, 1958. Situated on the shores of Lake Paranoá, became a symbol of the modern movement in architecture in the country. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, his columns have become a symbol of the city: the shape of the crest of the Federal District. The name of the palace was given by Juscelino Kubitschek, who justified it by saying that Brasilia was the dawn of a new day for Brazil. It is said that Kubitschek refused the first project done by Niemeyer, for "lack of grandeur" and asked the architect to redo the lines to build a palace "in a hundred years that is still admired."
The elegant marble columns in the form of aircraft, give the impression that the building is resting on the ground. There are sculptures that provide different views depending on the angle at which you look. The palace is lined with marble and has its glass facade. Its horizontal configuration, topped by a chapel that refers to the old farm houses of colonial Brazil. The different format of external columns reminiscent of the extended networks of balconies, such as those that surround homes. In front of the Palace there are two sculptures: "The Laras' of Alfredo Ceschiatti, and" Rhythms of Rio ", by Maria Martins. Beside, a chapel façade by Athos Bulcão. There is also a mirror of water reflecting the construction that gives the impression of floating on water. The front lawn of the palace is home to flamingos, herons and ostriches. A small channel, which is inhabited by carp, separates the official residence of the street.
Like all the Palaces... there are seven thousand square meters, and 800 building intended for the chairperson. The master bedroom has 120 square meters, the library 150, the Olympic swimming pool has heating system, the mezzanine ceiling height is 9 meters. There are three living rooms, music room, dining room and a special banquet. They are, on average, 72 employees, including secretaries, assistants, waiters, security guards and even doctors, 24 hours a day available to the presidential family. The visit to the Alvorada Palace is held on Wednesdays from 3 PM to 5:30 PM. No more than three hundred passwords are distributed.
