The wife asked this girl if we could take her picture (I certainly would have felt creepy going up to sixteen year old kids asking if I could take their picture). She nodded and kept texting away. I've said it before, and I'll say it again... next generation communication is the most accurate way to split out microgenerations. I'm from the old-school e-mail generation. I'll happily set my e-mail at work to refresh every five minutes, and I'm happy to check it and respond to it. The wife is more from the IM generation. I just don't get the impulse of immediate IMs. Seems a little rude to me. Then there are these goofy kids and their texting. They make me feel like Grandpa.
A few months ago I took a little trip to NY. Lucky me I had a couple of days for myself that I spent wandering around the city with a a nikon J1, a fun and easy camera to use. From those photos I made a book for myself. Thought I should re-edit some of those photos and post them here. I love that these little cameras are shooting raw and combined with some custom presets in LG4 organizing and editing has become fast, very happy with this workflow. On the other hand the sensor is to small.
Samuel Page was sworn in as a 'Special Constable' by Manchester Police Constabulary for the weekend of the executions of the 'Manchester Martyrs' - William Allen, Michael O'Brien, and Michael Larkin. The three Fenians were hanged on 23 November 1867 in front of an estimated 10,000 people.
Samuel Page's letter to his mother was recently acquired by the National Library of Ireland and sheds light on events surrounding the hanging which took place in front of the New Bailey Prison in Salford, England. Note that throughout the letter, Page calls O'Brien by the pseudonym he used while in England - William Gould.

The Protestant Cemetery Matzleinsdorf is a denominational cemetery in the 10th Vienna's district Favoriten. It is located at the beginning of this street up to No. 1 in Matzleinsdorf space (Matzleinsdorfer Platz) and is bounded on the north by the Gudrunstraße .
History
After the deaths of the two Protestant confessions A.B. and H.B. had been buried in Catholic cemeteries in Vienna until 1856, it was decided to create a separate Protestant cemetery. It was purchased a plot of land lying in front of the wall line at the edge of the former suburban Matzleinsdorf for this purpose. On 7 April 1858 the new cemetery was opened. The cemetery chapel was built by the famous architect Theophil Hansen, it was consecrated September 27nd 1860. Originally belonging to Wieden cemetery came to the division in 1861 as the new district Margarethen. Since 1874, the area is one of FavorIten (10th district). Since there were discussions about the further fate of the cemetery again, subsequently, a Protestant cemetery was established in the Vienna Central Cemetery also. But the Protestant cemetery Matzleinsdorf has survived to this day, so both cemeteries are occupied. During World War II the cemetery was badly damaged in the course of the bombings of the Southern Railway, near which it is located.

The former cemetery chapel was in 1899 a sermon station and branch church where services were held regularly. Since 1924 it is the seat of its own Protestant community AB (Lutheran), the parish church of the Evangelical Christ superintendency AB of Favoriten Vienna.
The church itself was built in the years 1858-1860 according to the plans of Theophil Hansen. Its striking appearance is reminiscent of an Orthodox church. Hansen had been based to the then at the time prevailing of historicism Byzantine style. A large dome rises above the crossing. The exterior is characterized by exposed brick and is divided by profiles and cornices. Strong cornerstones are crowned by pinnacles. Originally above the entrance was located a fresco by Carl Rahl, which showed the angel at the tomb of Christ. This image was at the beginning of the 20th Century replaced by a mosaic on a gold ground, representing the Christ with a banner.
Inside there are a total of 35 angels, mainly on the column capitals, but including under the organ loft four large, carved angel prayer, worship, teaching and preaching symbolize and remember figureheads on ships. At the spandrels beneath the dome frescoes are the symbols of the Evangelists. In 1968, Günther Baszel glass window in the chancel, showing the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. 1971 was followed by the right and left of the altar room with four other glass window depicting the Resurrection of Lazarus, the young man of Nain, the daughter of Jairus, and the story of the rich man and Lazarus. After the death Baszels 1989, the remaining four windows were added after designs by E. Bauernfeind .

What do museums of contemporary art stand for today? The last two decades has seen an unimaginable diversification of the museum as a place for exhibiting art and telling history, producing innovative education models, promoting international collaborations, forming alternative archives, and facilitating new productions.
This conference aims to tackle key questions around the museum as an institutional entity and contemporary art as an art historical category. Speakers will provide an overview of developments across the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Particular attention will be paid to the construction of historical narratives (or their abandonment) through collection displays, the role of research in relation to contemporary art, the alternative models that are already having an impact, and their relationship to more traditional museum infrastructures.

Illuminated in Hainaut ca. 1280 and completed in 1290, this collection of richly illuminated Cistercian manuscripts is a rare example of those being produced in Flanders at the end of the thirteenth century. Nineteen extant large historiated initials, flourished and decorated initials, and an abundance of amusing drolleries facilitate a liturgical narrative within the text. However, additions and removals within the text and imagery tells much about the use and history of the manuscript. This manuscript is the third volume of the three-volume set (volumes one and two are lost) destined for the prioress at the Cistercian abbey of Sainte-Marie at Beaupré (diocese of Cambrai). The liturgical contents of this volume provide musical settings from Christmas to Easter. Two sets of antiphonaries, each composed of three volumes, were originally created for the abbess and prioress of Beaupre. Of these two sets, the Walters Art Museum houses three volumes: two volumes from the set intended for the abbess and one volume from the set designated for the prioress. A fourth associated volume was created later to supplement W.759. It should be noted that apart from the volumes housed at the Walters, there survive four cutout initials from the other volumes. However, in 1865, these manuscripts were regrettably lost in a fire that spread from a house adjacent to Sotheby’s, where the books were being prepared for sale. In addition to the manuscripts' rich illumination, there is also a wealth of historical evidence throughout. Added at the beginning of each volume is a full-page inscription that details ownership. In the third volume it reads, “Antiphonaire pour sevir dans le Coeur du coté de Ma-Dame L’abbesse, depuis, le Nöel iusqu' à paques.” Further information on provenance can be gleaned from the illumination itself; this volume contains an author portrait of the scribe/artist, a Cistercian monk named Johannes de Toussens (fol. 1r); while the manuscripts' patroness who married into the de Viane family is depicted with a younger woman named Clementia on fol. 3v of vol. 1 (W.759). Donations by members of the de Viane family to Sainte-Marie of Beaupré were recorded from 1244 to 1293. Since the volume’s assemblage, there have been updates in two major campaigns: ca. 1475-1500 at which time select thirteenth-century Offices were replaced in part by revisions and by additions placed at the end of the volume (see W.762 for supplement) and the second campaign in the eighteenth century at which time some thirteenth and fifteenth-century leaves were removed, changes were made to both neumes and text passim, and additions were added at the end of the volume or in the Supplement. The first of these campaigns was presumably for abbess Jacqueline Hendricx (1473-1500), the second in the eighteenth century likely for the last abbess, Angéline de Lossy (1755-96), after which point the abbey was seized during the French Revolution. Drolleries are most often found on pages with historiated initials, and principally focused on centered bas-de-page scenes. While many drolleries were effaced, some traces of these images can be recognized by their shadowy outlines. Many of these erasures are thought to be at the hand of John Ruskin, who is also credited with authoring a separate table of contents, as well as several transcriptions of the Latin text found on numerous leaves. Truly a remarkable work, this multi-volume antiphonary was generously gifted to The Walters Art Museum in 1957 at the bequest of the Hearst Foundation.

Companies deciding where to locate their manufacturing activities, or whether to source their products in the United States or from overseas, should carefully consider the total costs of shipping. Shipping costs include both the direct and indirect costs of transporting products from their point of origin to their destination market. Expected gains from offshoring can often be erased by long shipping times, rising or fluctuating shipping costs, regulatory fees, and unexpected delays.
Shipping costs occur in both directions. They are a cost to U.S. firms that import, and they also are a cost to firms that purchase exported U.S. products. As this website emphasizes, firms worldwide must take into account numerous costs, including and in addition to shipping, when assessing where to produce or make their purchases. The resurgence in U.S. exports over the past several years provides strong evidence that many foreign customers recognize the value of products with the "Made in the U.S.A." label.
Freight Costs and Shipping Time
Most goods imported into the United States travel by land or sea – less than one percent of the total imports by weight arrive by air. This is due in large part to the substantial cost of air freight, which the World Bank estimates is 12 to 16 times more expensive than ocean freight. Whatever the mode of transportation shipping involves multiple costs, including container fees, packaging, terminal handling, and broker fees. In order to get a complete picture of shipping costs, each of these factors should be taken into account.
In addition to financial costs, shipping goods internationally takes time. For example, goods shipped from China, on average, take around 14 days to reach the West Coast or 30 days to reach the East Coast. If there are any problems with the final goods delivered to the United States, or if a fast resupply becomes necessary, it can be difficult or impossible to receive a new shipment in time.
In order to save on fuel costs, many ocean shipping lines use slow steaming on many of their routes. Pioneered by Maersk Line, slow steaming involves ships sailing at low speeds to reduce the amount of fuel consumed. This reduces costs for the shipping companies, but it increases the amount of time it takes to move goods from one place to another.
Slow steaming has quickly become the preferred method used by ocean shipping lines, both for economic and environmental reasons. A recent study published in the Journal of Maritime Economics and Logistics estimates that “extra slow steaming” is the most beneficial vessel speed, reducing costs for the transport company by 20 percent (which can pass those savings on to the manufacturers whose goods they carry) and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 43 percent. However, extra slow steaming reduces speed by 25 to 40 percent from normal speeds. Slow steaming adds as many as ten extra days in shipping from China to the United States. While reduced shipping costs might be attractive, they come with a price—even longer shipping times.
Long shipping times also play a role in product returns. Any items that must be returned to the factory or point of origin must again travel the two to four weeks required to get there or be shipped by air, which is considerably more expensive than shipping by sea. If a customer requires a new or replacement item right away, this will almost always require costly air freight.
Infrastructure
Before being loaded on a freighter or airplane, goods must be secured in shipping boxes and traveled from the factory to the port. The overall quality of the foreign transportation infrastructure, which includes roads, railroads, ports, and air transportation networks, varies across countries and has a direct bearing on the total time and cost of shipping. To help gauge the relative differences in individual countries' infrastructure it is worthwhile to consult the World Economic Forum's latest Global Competitiveness Report. The report provides data on 144 countries.

Những tưởng cuộc sống hôn nhân như vậy đã tạm gọi là đủ đầy, nhưng chẳng ngờ hạnh phúc đến chưa được bao lâu đã vội ra đi, khi chị H phát hiện ra chồng là một con nghiện ma túy nặng. Bao nhiêu tiền của trong nhà cứ thế đội nón ra đi theo những cơn đói thuốc của anh T.
Kể từ khi lấy vợ, anh T không những không chịu thay đổi mà còn ngày càng lún sâu vào con đường tệ nạn. Anh không màng đến vợ con, trách nhiệm kiếm tiền gánh vác gia đình dồn cả vào đôi vai chị H. Không những thế, trong những cơn đói thuốc vật vã, anh T còn thẳng tay đánh đập vợ không thương tiếc. Mẹ chồng chị thương và chiều con trai, vốn đã không thích chị H làm dâu nên giữa hai người thường xuyên xảy ra xung đột. "Cưới nhau được 2 năm, tôi đã phải ra ngoài thuê nhà ở riêng vì bị mẹ chồng hành hạ cả về thể xác lẫn tinh thần. Thời gian có bầu, tôi vừa làm lụng tự nuôi mình vừa lo đồ tiếp tế cho chồng. Ngày nào cũng vác bụng bầu to tướng ra ngồi lề đường từ sáng đến 2h đêm bán nước mía mà không dám mở lời kêu than", chị H xót xa kể lại quãng thời gian đau khổ.
Vất vả trăm đường, chị H không hề biết rằng đằng sau, bà đã ngấm ngầm rỉ tai "khuyên" con trai bỏ vợ. Tháng 3/2013, chị H ngỡ ngàng khi nhận được lá đơn ly hôn do anh T đích thân viết. Mặc dù từ ngày lấy chồng, số ngày hạnh phúc của chị chưa đầy bàn tay, cũng không hề được "ăn sung mặc sướng, vô lo vô nghĩ" như những gì mọi người thường nghĩ đến các nàng dâu may mắn lấy được chồng Hà Nội, nhưng quả tình chị H chưa một lần nghĩ đến việc sẽ ly hôn với chồng. Chuyện đã đến nước này, chị đành phải gạt nước mắt ký vào đơn ly hôn.Sau ly hôn, tòa ra phán quyết: bé K, con chung của chị H và anh T sẽ sống chung với ông bà nội và bố, để thuận lợi cho việc học tập, đi lại. Hai mẹ con chị H sẽ được gặp nhau vào 2 ngày cuối tuần, cũng như chị H có trách nhiệm chu cấp số tiền nuôi con cho gia đình chồng là 1 triệu đồng/tháng. Thời gian đầu, mặc dù kinh tế chưa dư dả gì nhưng chị H vẫn cố gắng thuê trọ ở gần nhà chồng cũ, để được gặp con mỗi ngày. Sau này vì mẹ chồng cũ thường xuyên chửi bới, chị đành dọn đi, tìm một chỗ ở khác xa hơn để tránh phải chạm mặt.Sau khi ly hôn, anh T vẫn tiếp tục chìm trong cơn mê của "nàng tiên nâu". Nhiều lần không có tiền hút hít, anh T còn chủ động vòi vĩnh tiền của vợ cũ. Đỉnh điểm nhất là một lần anh T hùng hổ dọa dẫm vợ cũ qua điện thoại: nếu đến gặp con thì anh sẽ gặp đâu đánh đấy, đánh đến chết mới thôi. Quá sợ hãi và một phần cũng biết tính nết anh T, chị H cũng không dám chọc giận chồng cũ vì sợ bị anh túng quá hóa liều. Một thời gian sau, anh T bị bắt giam khi đang tàng trữ hàng trắng trong người, kể từ đó, chị H không còn tin tức gì về chồng cũ. Cháu K ở với ông bà nội, tuy không còn bị bố ngăn cản gặp mẹ, nhưng hai mẹ con chị H cũng hiếm hoi mới có thể gặp nhau, vì mẹ chồng chị H vẫn giữ ác cảm với nàng dâu cũ, không mấy hài lòng khi thấy chị đưa đón con đi chơi.
Thoạt đầu, chị H chỉ thấy lạ khi thấy thái độ của bà, nhưng càng về sau này, chị mới thấm thía tất cả. Dịp Tết năm 2014, chị H có gọi điện đến xin phép bà nội cháu kha ngan đến đón con về quê ngoại nhưng bà lấy lý do thoái thác không đồng ý cho mẹ đón. Kể từ đó, chị H mới vỡ lẽ rằng hóa ra mẹ chồng cũ vẫn ngấm ngầm nuôi ý định chia cắt hai mẹ con chị. Nhiều lần háo hức gặp con, thì cũng ngần ấy lần chị thất vọng, hụt hẫng. Nỗi nhớ và thương con, chị chỉ biết lặng lẽ cất giấu vào sâu trong lòng.Có những khi nhớ con quá, tôi chỉ biết canh giờ đến trường rồi lén lút gặp cháu. Nhiều khi nhìn thấy con mà nước mắt chỉ chực ứa rangười mẹ tội nghiệp nghẹn ngào nói. Không cam chịu chấp nhận số phận, chị H chủ động tạm dừng việc đóng góp tiền học của cháu K, để tạo áp lực với nhà chồng cũ cho chị gặp con. Không ngờ, vì việc này mà mẹ chồng cũ càng lấy cớ chửi bới chị nặng lời, bà thường xuyên gọi điện thoại chì chiết chị là người mẹ vô trách nhiệm với con. Là người rứt ruột sinh con ra, nhưng lại phải gặp con trong lén lút, còn nỗi khổ sở nào bằng – đó là tâm trạng của người mẹ tội nghiệp khi ấy.Sau những tổn thương của cuộc hôn nhân đầu, chị H gặp được một người đàn ông hiền lành, chịu khó, tuy không phải là "mơ ước của mọi cô gái" nhưng đây đích thực là nơi mà chị có thể tin tưởng. Với anh, chị tìm được sự cảm thông và san sẻ, hiểu hoàn cảnh của chị, anh không những không xa lánh mà còn lấy đó làm lý do để ở bên cạnh chị nhiều hơn.Sau khi làm thủ tục đăng ký kết hôn, chị H có lên UBND Phường để xin đăng ký cắt khẩu, nhưng được họ cho biết là phải có hộ khẩu gốc. Chị bèn quay lại nhà chồng cũ, đề xuất nguyện vọng muốn làm thủ tục tách khẩu và hỏi mượn cuốn sổ hộ khẩu để ra phường nhưng mẹ chồng chị lập tức quay ra mắng té tát. Chung sống cùng bà gần 10 năm nên chị H gần như bị ám ảnh bởi tính tình của mẹ chồng cũ. Tuy rất muốn được việc nhưng để quay lại nói chuyện với bà, chị gần như không đủ can đảm… Cực chẳng đã, chị H đành gửi đơn khiếu nại lên Công an Phường và báo Trí Thức Trẻ để mong được hỗ trợ và can thiệp.
Gặp chị H trong những ngày Hà Nội bước vào trận nắng nóng kỷ lục, người mẹ đáng thương vừa o bán hàng kiếm tiền lo cho gia đình mới, vừa tất tả đi khắp nơi mong được giúp đỡ. Sau 9 năm hôn nhân ngập trong nước mắt và tủi hờn, chị H cho biết cho đến giờ phút này, chị chỉ có hai mong ước giản dị mà dù có thế nào, chị cũng cố gắng hết sức để thực hiện. "Hiện giờ, tôi chỉ có hai mong ước: thứ nhất là được làm thủ tục cắt hộ khẩu khỏi nhà chồng cũ để ổn định cuộc sống, thứ hai là được gặp con.
Nếu được gặp thằng bé, tôi sẽ làm tròn trách nhiệm của một người mẹ. Có nhiều khi, tôi nghĩ nếu gia đình chồng cũ có đồng ý đưa con cho tôi nuôi, tôi chắc chắn sẽ đón cháu về ngay, nhưng có lẽ là sẽ chẳng bao giờ có chuyện ấy xảy ra đâu.
