Weekly theme: Mundane

Peeling paint that needs to be scrapped then repainted is pretty mundane work to me.

Jeanette Winterson

Scatalogical woodcut illustration accompanying a poem characterizing the Roman Catholic polemicist Johannes Nas as an ass. Used by Nicolaus Henricus of Oberursel.

Birgit Wiedl notes that the Eselritt (ass-ride), like the Sauritt (sow-ride), "is the typical feature of a type of pamphlet that is known as Schandbild or Schmähbrief ('defamatory picture/letter') that ... show the person(s) they are directed against as riding backwards; if groups of people are depicted, they might also engage in the 'typical' habit of occupying themselves with the animal's behind, shoving seals or money pouches into its hindquarters, or devouring its excrement" ("Laughing at the Beast" in Laughter in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times, ed. A. Classen (Berlin: De Gruyter, 2010), p. 351). Donkeys are commonly depicted eating thistles; in the 16th century, this image also becomes emblematic of miserliness or the failure to appreciate the good things in one's possession: cf. emblem 86 in Andrea Alciati's Emblemata. (The anagram "Nasus/As(i)nus," used in this work, may also have influenced the choice of mount.) The pigs pursuing the donkey's droppings require no further comment. The rider is tonsured and dressed as a friar and bears a shield which identifies him as Johannes Nas. The upper portion of the shield shows a pair of scissors, three needles, and a thimble. Johannes Nas began life as a tailor and included a pair of shears on his episcopal arms; they are common in satirical depictions of him: cf. this image and this image. Here the tailor's tools are accompanied by a goat, negatively associated with lasciviousness and stubbornness (cf. Wiedl, p. 353, and the entry "Goat" in H.B. Werness, The Continuum Encyclopedia of Animal Symbolism in Art (New York: Continuum, 2006)).

Paper in boat in river during arts festival

This large-format, illuminated Timurid copy of the Qur’an is believed to have been produced in Northern India in the ninth century AH / fifteenth CE. The manuscript opens with a series of illuminated frontispieces. The main text is written in a large vocalized polychrome muḥaqqaq script. Marginal explanations of the readings of particular words and phrases are in thuluth and naskh scripts, and there is interlinear Persian translation in red naskh script. The fore-edge flap of the gold-tooled, brown leather binding is inscribed with verses 77 through 80 from Chapter 56 (Sūrat al-wāqiʿah). The seal of Sultan Bayezid II (1481-1512 CE) appears on fol. 8a. There is an erased bequest (waqf) statement and stamp of Sultan ʿUthmān Khān (1027-31 CE) on fol. 3a.

i downloaded the 'grutch shaded' chalkboard font which i really think adds to the whole chalkboard feel. also, i thought the 'chalk/charcoal' sketch filter was a little too light so i used an addition layer of text at low opacity just to keep some of the original form. such a fun project. :)

In 1879 The City of Sydney Improvement Act was constituted as a result of the findings of the Sydney City and Suburban Sewage and Health Board regarding the poor condition of buildings and sanitation within the City of Sydney due to a lack of proper legislation and codes of building practice. The City of Sydney Improvement Board was appointed to execute the Act. These photographs, taken by private photographers for the Board, show buildings in need of repair or undergoing alterations, as well as views of streets showing the condition of awnings, signboards and walls of shops, hotels and private residences.

An excellent story teller would never stage an early Climax that results in a prolonged mind-numbing descent to a resigned and miserable conclusion. So don't let your fabulous Las Vegas Strip Fling end with you and your very lovely lady sitting around on the curve at the hotel's airport shuttle station dejectedly waiting for the 7am Bell Trans shuttle to come and take you two away to McCarran International Airport and a miserable flight back home. If you and your very lovely lady are true Las Vegas Strip Connoisseurs as opposed to being a pair of hapless Las Vegas Strip tourists, then you two have long since cultivated The High Art and Science of Leaving Las Vegas -- starting with 3pm late check-out!

So Now What...

Go ahead and get up early at 7am, pack your luggage and then go and have a great breakfast at the Monte Carlo buffet, or have breakfast out at the pool. Let your very lovely lady lay out at the pool while you go out with your Canon EOS 5D MK III to do some final day photo safari work. Give yourself about three or four hours walking up-and-down the Strip in search of your final scenic and interior shots. You should start heading back to the hotel sometime around 11:30am. Meet your very lovely lady at the pool around noon. By now you and your very lovely lady should already know where you two want to have your final lunch. Since y'all are staying at the Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino, you two should head directly to either the Double Barrel Roadhouse or to Diablo's Cantina. Y'all should have no problem getting a table out on the patio. Don't worry about all those folks rushing around trying to make their Noon check-out deadline, you two have a late 3pm checkout and a 3:30pm Bell Trans airport shuttle pick-up -- so Life Is Good! Have a leisurely lunch and celebrate the very good fortune that has allowed you two to have spent the last nine days on the Las Vegas Strip. You and your very lovely lady need to make one final walk up-and-down the Strip. Take lots of pretty pictures of your lovely lady against the backdrop of Lake Bellagio, the Mirage jungle gardens, Buccaneer Bay, and the Wynn floral gardens. Spend some quality time at Madame Tussaud's wax museum. Do the gondola ride at the Venetian. Stroll the Fashion Show Mall and the Wynn Promenade Shops. Have exotic cocktails at the Eastside Lounge at the Encore. Start heading back towards the Monte Carlo around 2pm. Have one last tour of the Cosmopolitan, the CityCenter, Crystals, and finally the Aria. Y'all don't need to rush because your luggage is already packed and you two are all ready to check-out electronically at 3pm using your smartphone. Your fabulous Las Vegas Vacation is not officially over yet -- so take time for one last frozen Mango Margarita at the bar. Life Is Still Good Here!

Prepping Nikon Picture Control types for use:

1. Using the Picture Control Utility in View NX2, for each Picture Control create a variant, with the following settings, (adjustments set to Manual in the Picture Control utility):-

Sharpening = auto

Contrast / Brightness = auto

Saturation = auto.

Note you first click the "Manual" button (to enable customisation) then proceed as follows

2. For each Picture Control type, name each (and save) as follows:-

Standard = as "Standard auto" variant

Portrait = "Portrait auto"

Etc. so that you have an auto variant for each Picture Control type, to get you started using them, in VNX2.

You can Export these pre-sets to your camera via SD card, refer to the help (ticked on the schematic.)

Once you have saved all the 'Auto' variants for each Picture Control type, then you can start to process your NEFs, using these saved custom settings. You can do this in the field when out shooting, or post the shoot, in VNX2 / CNX2.

Double click a NEF to bring it into the Edit window - then view the camera applied Picture Control type, then decide if you want to change / experiment.

You will or should notice a dramatic improvement in quality.

You will most often find very little extra sharpening is required.

N.B. Don't start messing around with curve customisation, until you know what you're doing and have built up experience with the customisation I've outlined at the top of this posting.

Postcard sent to Joe Derbyshire whilst on active service in France during WW1.

Mr. Derbyshire was a resident of Rigby Street, Preston.

Following comment from flickr member Tony Beale: These three postcards were sent by my grandmother Jane Derbyshire to her husband Joe Derbyshire when he was in France in the Great War. I have many more – including cards that he sent to her, but his have little or no writing on them since this was often not allowed in case the cards should fall into enemy hands.
