This Dell Insprion 1440 laptop is tethered to:
• an ethernet (more reliable and secure than wi-fi)
• USB speakers w/subwoofer (better than the tinny speakers in the laptop)
• memory-card reader (the Dell can't read CF cards w/o a reader)
• flatbed scanner
The laptop runs Kubuntu 9.04 Linux, and Windows XP as a guest OS in VM (virtual-machine managed by KVM).
Camera details:
• Olympus E-510
• Jinfinance OM-to-4/3 lens adapter with focus confirm.
• OM Zuiko 55mm f 1.2 lens (110mm effective).
• Aperture f 2.0
The tough part was getting the light stands for computer, monitor and Tether Tools table attached to the main case. They mount and unmount rapidly and take up no additional floor space.

Wow! Lightroom 3 makes tethered shooting so easy! (I'm not pretending this is a good shot. Just practicing...) I wish I had tried this before the club meeting on studio lighting.

SOUTH CHINA SEA (Oct. 18, 2012) - Logistics specialists connect tethering lines to a SH-60F Seahawk of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George W on the flight deck of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) during a vertical replenishment with the Military Sealift Command dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Alan Shepard (T-AKE 3). George Washington and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, provide a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interest of the U.S. and its allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific region. Rather than coop them up on nice days, mom'll just let them romp around with a piece of yarn tied to one leg. They don't seem to mind, particularly, and are better than dogs are at not getting themselves all tied up.
In November 2020, during a tethered balloon flight for the Ice Fog Field Experiment at Oliktok Point (IFFExO) in northern Alaska, a laser shines from the Gondola, a guest instrument platform from Ontario Tech University. The Gondola carries cloud droplet measurement probes that can provide bulk microphysical properties of ice crystals. The returning laser backscatter gives researchers an idea of particle size spectra in the air.

(I was holding the camera up against the tether with one hand, hoping the autofocus ignored the nylon tether rope.)
