Honeywell Aviation Services - Convair CV-580 (CV-340 Turboprop Conversion) - N580HW (c/n 2)

 

This aircraft was the second Convair 340 (CV-340) ever built. It was delivered to United Air Lines (UAL) as N73102, one of many wearing the name "Mainliner Convair" on September 2, 1952. Frontier Airlines would then be the next operator of the aircraft (same registration) in August 1966. After Frontier, the airplane would be purchased by Gem State Airlines and re-registered as N116GS in May 1979. Gem State as then renamed Golden Gate Airlines in 1980. In February 1984, Aspen Airways would buy the aircraft and re-register it as N113AP. Then in March 1991, Aspen Airways sold the aircraft to Renown Aviation, Renown then soon selling it to Allied Signal in January 1992. Allied Signal registered the aircraft as N580AS and equipped it as a flying testbed. Allied Signal and Honeywell merged in 1999, the aircraft now wears Honeywell titles and is registered as N580HW.

The famous "Voodoo 1" avionics testbed makes another public appearance - unfortunately on a rather hazy day. I didn't get any other views of it, though, so this will have to do.

Being studied are nonchrome primers for aircraft. At left are Lead Scientist Dr. Luz Marina Calle and Dr. Paul Hintze, who is working on a graduate project for the National Research Council. The KSC Beach Corrosion Test Site was established in the 1960s and has provided more than 30 years of historical information on the long-term performance of many materials in use at KSC and other locations around the world. Located 100 feet from the Atlantic Ocean approximately 1 mile south of the Space Shuttle launch sites, the test facility includes an atmospheric exposure site, a flowing seawater exposure site, and an on-site electrochemistry laboratory and monitoring station. The beach laboratory is used to conduct real- time corrosion experiments and provides for the remote monitoring of surrounding weather conditions. The newly added flowing seawater immersion facility provides for the immersion testing of materials and devices under controlled conditions. Headed for the Ross Aviation ramp on taxiway D. Second time I've seen this airplane - the first was at Palmdale while waiting for Boeing's 757 avionics testbed.

Rep. Frank Lucas and University of Oklahoma President James Gallogly, along with about 25 congressional staff members visited the National Weather Center on Thursday, March 21. Their brief tour included the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, NOAA National Weather Service Norman Forecast Office, and the NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed.

Early pre-production A-6A later converted to EA-6A testbed.

When im not testing engines on this chassis it makes a fun front wheel drive gocart, but only the front wheels have brakes, so it has a tendency to nose dive under hard braking. This was taken just after my Timber wolf decided to show his admiration for my handywork on my rear tyre.

Fesmire (right), NASA lead engineer for the KSC Cryogenics Testbed, works on Cryostat-1, the Methods of Testing Thermal Insulation and Association Test Apparatus, which he developed. At left is co-inventor Dr. Stan Augustynowicz, chief scientist with Sierra Lobo Inc. in Milan, Ohio. Cryostat-1 provides absolute thermal performance values of cryogenic insulation systems under real-world conditions. Cryogenic liquid is supplied to a test chamber and two guard chambers, and temperatures are sensed within the vacuum chamber to test aerogels, foams or other materials. The Cryostat-1 machine can detect the absolute heat leakage rates through materials under the full range of vacuum conditions. Fesmire recently acquired three patents for testing thermal insulation materials for cryogenic systems. The research team of the Cryogenics Testbed offers testing and support for a number of programs and initiatives for NASA and commercial customers. As Europe and America explore how to tame the tech giants and ensure they act in the public interest, Asia has a chance to position itself as the testbed for innovation. The successful application of data is improving efficiency in a wide range of areas, from health care and education to safety, power grids and transport. Asia could demonstrate the positive attributes of data-driven societies, as it consumes innovation in an arguably more forward-thinking way than any other region. The “internet of things”, still mainly a buzzword in the West, is more of an everyday reality in South Korea and China. And on the whole, people in Asia seem happier than their counterparts around the world to share their data in exchange for better services. Yet a lack of cross-border data flows can limit algorithms to putting data to work only in its country of origin, and firms and the public sector are struggling to use data effectively.
