Knowing I was considering the Wildcard, Omar so graciously offered his beautiful Banshee Rune for a test ride before finalizing my decision. To be honest, this was literally forced on me in the name of sound decision-making - and I'm not one to argue with such an offer! To make the comparison that much better, I took both Banshees out together, so I could try them out on lines one after the other.
With 6" of travel front and rear, a mini-horst-link suspension, and geometry geared toward long distance XC and All-Mountain riding, the Rune is right up one of my alleys. If I was looking for a bike to replace the Chameleon, rather than complement it, this type of bike would be perfect. I was somewhat surprised to feel pedal feedback when standing up to pedal, almost like the bike had oval-shaped Biopace chainrings. However, when seated, the Rune is quite capable of negotiating technical uphill sections.
First, I will admit that even for an XC bike, this frame is one size too big for me. I buried the post quite a bit to ride it down hill. That said, with the same head angle as the Wildcard and BottleRocket - and more rear travel - the Rune is not nearly as comfortable descending as either of them. Slacker seat angle and longer seat tube at the same top tube length aside, the Rune seems not to squat into its suspension travel when you put your weight on it. I found myself skittering down slippery rock sections on the Rune, then walking up and crawling down on the Wildcard in full control. Since this is a condition I run into quite often, my bike needs to be good at this! I carried the Rune down sections that I'm comfortable riding my hardtail down.
The few times I was able to put the Rune in the air, it didn't object. But something about its suspension design makes it a less stable descender than I'm looking for. I'm quite certain that if this bike was a size or two smaller, I could make do, but that brings me back to the point about complementing the Shore-capable hardtail in my stable. In looking for a bike that will primarily be ridden on the Shore, I suppose I am looking for something more towards the "freeride" end of things rather than "All-Mountain". If I were to choose a bike for the Seven Summits and other epics, the Rune would be ideal.

While this whole shootout business is about a bike called the Wildcard, the real wildcard today was James' 1993 Rocky Mountain Team Comp, his dad's "mid-life crisis bike" when it was new. James may not make it out to the trails with us too often, but whenever he does, he shreds so hard on a bike that just shouldn't be capable of what he does. Earlier this year it was a rigid dirt jumping bike with only a rear brake, and now, a vintage XC rig. Unfortunately, due to a difference in pedal choice, I was unable to officially include the Team Comp in the shootout.

First 44 29s proto. A lot changed between this rendition and the "f". Can't wait to take it to the trail along with the f and compare apples with oranges.
