These rice terraces are up to 3000 tiers high and have an extremely intelligent irrigation system. Also, animals kept in the top layers supply the fertilizer in form of dung, which gets washed down every tier through the irrigation channels. these terraces are known to be 1300 years old (from bronze excavations found nr. Kunming only in the 1950s) and maybe older. To this day, the Hani people (aka Akha in some countries of southern Asia) work on and create ever new terraces. A wonder of this world!

She likes "walking" around on the terrace in her walker. It doesn't work on the rugs.

Hyatt Terraces Plaza - Baguio

In the late 70's when I was with EPZA, part of my life was spent in this place ... I will treasure those moments!

Tegallalang Rice Terraces in Ubud is famous for its beautiful scenes of rice paddies involving the subak (traditional Balinese cooperative irrigation system), which according to history, was passed down by a revered holy man named Rsi Markandeya in the eighth century. Tegallalang forms the three most splendid terraced landscapes in Ubud's shared region, with the others being in the villages of Pejeng and Campuhan.

Tegallang alone has an outlook that spreads down before you and away to the rice terraces on the slopes across the valley. The high roadside location is cool and breezy and it is a well-known spot for tourists to stop and take photos. Painters and nature lovers also enjoy visiting this spot, and there are numerous art kiosks and cafes near the ledge offering their ware.

"C'mon guys, give us something to eat. We don't have all day." A lunch after a business meeting turned out to be a little crowded. We used to have numerous sparrows in the gardens, but the number has been decreasing the past few years. I think they all moved to places where there are a lot of cafés and restaurants with outside seating. Why search for foodl, when people give it to you, or where you can pick up all that is spilled?

Terraces in the Kathmandu valley, with rice. The yellow is mustard and the white is nursery rice, I think.

Caught the 7am jeepney to Bontock (1.5hr), the 10am bus to Banaue. Found Jeff's guide from last year, Benjamin, at the tourist information center. Ate lunch. Hired a jeepney to take us to the end of the road and the start of our hike (with limited time there was no other way). Then went on an afternoon hike in the rain to see the Batad rice terraces. It was incredible, as my photos do not even begin to show! Ate pizza at the bottom of the hike before tracking back up to the top of the mountain. The best pizza in the Philippines is not accessible by road!

(am i writing a novel?)

Hiked back up out of the valley, back into the jeepney (1/2 hr) back to Banaue. Within twenty min. we had changed into dry clothes, bought two hunter backpacks, and were ready to board our 6:30 bus back to Baguio (ps. we live in balili barangay, in banguet province.

Okay so we have been up for 12 hours now, and had one packed and exhausting trip.

Now imagine us on an non-air con bus, packed to the brim with cargo and passengers (people were sleeping on top of the cargo using our bags as pillows). There is a drunk on the bus who will not leave Kathleen alone, the heat is staggering, and the kid in front of me is puking his guts out for the majority of the ELEVEN HOUR bus ride home. Just imagine the worst greyhound bus experience you have ever had and multiply it to the power of 10. then maybe you will understand how uncomfortable our ride was.

ps. My camera smashed on the ground the day prior, and no longer works. All of these photos were taken with Marks pocket sized camera. Thank you mark!

Here is what's left of Wainhouse Terrace complete with Wainhouse Tower in the background. Mr Wainhouse decided to 'upgrade' a row of terraces in 1876 with the addition of a 200 foot balcony overlooking the ornamental colonnade we see here. A little bit of Mediterranean glamour for downtown Halifax, but the Yorkies won in the end as the glamour apparent in the attached links has long gone, as did the terraces back in 1978. The initials JEW (John Edward Wainhouse) and the date 1876 are still visible in the front wall of what remains.
