These terraces are not as colorful as they look here! A lot of processing done.

Guilin, China. - Revisited.

The Longsheng Rice Terraces (Chinese: 龙胜梯田; Pinyin: Lóngshèng Tītián) are located in Longsheng County, about 100 km (2 hours drive) from Guilin. The most popular are Ping An Rice Terrace and Jinkeng Rice Terrace.

Panorama of the Longji terrace

The terraced fields are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top, the highest part being 880 m in elevation while the lowest part is 380 m. The coiling line that starts from the mountain foot up to the mountain top divides the mountain into layers of water glittering in the sun in spring, layers of green rice shoots in summer, layers of golden rice in fall, and layers of silvery frost in winter. At its beginning of Yuan Dynasty, the terraced fields were mostly built during the Ming Dynasty, about 500 years ago.

I took this series in Tanzania, next to the roads of the Arusha region, in December 2017.

Along the route, I could see many people walking along the road and the sides of the road were full of activity when crossing the villages or their vicinity.

Many stores that sell phone credit, drinks and snacks emerge. There are stalls selling fish, fruits, roots, vegetables, spices, pots, pans, brooms or car parts. People gather, play, go to the car and motorcycle workshops or to the beauty salon, buy in stores, wait for the bus ...

Some young people sit with their bikes talking and smoking while people pass by. Other people come to look for a telephone credit, to buy, or simply they are at the door of their house spending their time and protecting themselves from the sun under a tree or an umbrella.

The contrast between the traditional and the modern is remarkable, the rural is mixed with the urban and the primitive with technology.

Castle Wynd led from what is now Johnstone Terrace down to the Grassmarket, and part of the first wall known to be built to protect the city - the King’s Wall of around 1450, began around half-way down the castle bank, which at the time dropped steeply and without interruption to the valley which was to become the Grassmarket. Some remains of this wall can be seen beside the middle portion of Castle Wynd, and also in the region of Tweeddale Court at 14 High Street. Johnstone Terrace itself was built in 1828 and had living quarters for the Castle garrison built in 1873 on the South side.

The overgrown terraces of Cathkin park, formerly Scotland's national ground and known as Hampden park (the 2nd) before they moved up the road.

Amid a horrid new housing estate is this place, largely stripped but good to visit nevertheless. I performed a quite frankly downright rude access to get inside, and wasn't disappointed.

When nature conquer rooftop! I love this urban rooftop terrace, a cool place to relax in this world of concrete!

Outstanding in every way, Bethesda Terrace, located mid-Park at 72nd Street, is the artistic culmination of the 1858 “Greensward Plan,” that designers Olmsted and Vaux conceived of for Central Park. This architectural achievement defines the heart of the Park as it seamlessly joins the Mall with a Terrace overlooking the Lake and the wooded Ramble beyond.

It is built of New Brunswick sandstone in a mixture of styles, Romanesque, Gothic and Classical with decorative elements designed by Mould. His amazingly intricate carvings reflect upon nature’s significance, as it features birds and seasonal plants that appear along the stairways and also on the Terrace’s main posts. On the upper Terrace facing the Mall, he represented symbolic carvings of daytime and nightfall including a crowing cock for day and a witch on broom for night. This magnificent split-level Terrace creates a heavenly atmosphere with its upper terrace and grand stairways on either side topped with flower filled stone vases that descend to the grand walkway below. The floor consists of red tile panels bordered with strips of bluish granite, completely installed in 1910.

Many visitors stand on the Upper Terrace and gaze out toward the famous Bethesda Fountain at its center while the Lake and the shoreline of the Ramble are in clear view.

As you descend the stairways, you can sit on stone benches built into the lawn’s Terrace walls and watch the tranquil drama of people rowing, a wedding unfold or visitors taking photos from every conceivable location. One can access the lower level by the stairways, or use one of the four paths that symmetrically surround the area, yet the most traveled walkway is from the Mall.

Beneath the Terrace Bridge and the 72nd St. Drive you will arrive at the seven arches of the Arcade, a columned passageway with walls on either side in blind arcades adorned with trompe l’oeil paintings.

You can see that we are in the beginning of the planting stages. You can also see the size of the stones that we put in place - by hand - yikes!

My first flight on Boeing's brand new (in 2012) aircraft type, the 787-8 Dreamliner. First commercial operator of the plane is ANA All Nippon Airways. ANA mostly deploys the aircraft on some domestic and regional routes and the first long haul to Frankfurt from Haneda airport. Some of the domestic routes go, amongst others, to Hiroshima and Okayama. We, my hubby Jelle and our friend Adam, decided to fly on the OKJ sector. Adam chose Business class while Jelle and I settled with Economy class.

The aircraft is amazing, it instantly became my favorite aircraft type! The large windows are awesome, as are the electronic blinds that darken the cabin but still allow to look outside! The cabin is very spacious and gives a roomy feeling and the noise level was very low.

A very pleasant flight with friendly service from the NH cabin crew ("your first flight on the aircraft?").

The Terrace Wood incorporates Terrace Walk and Nun's Walk. This is an interesting tract of Ancient Woodland that hugs the road. Diving past in April you will be greeted with a fine display of bluebells. There are some interesting botanical features here. There are a few huge sweet chestnut stumps. My farther was once a game keeper here for Lord Nicholson back in the day, we would go for walks around this place and he would tell me the history of the place. we would park the old Morris Marina van, which had a huge hole in the floor, a fire poker for a gear stick and an upturn bucket for a passenger seat, good old days. I was always amazed at the size of this old tree stumps, and wondered how old the were, my farther told me some men cut them down to count the rings to find out their age but not surprisingly they were hollow in the middle. Looking at them today I would have put them around 250 – 300 years old before they were cut down 60 – 70 years ago, so they could be nearly 400 years old now.
