Made it count on the last shot for the year - Northern Plains Railroad has two units hauling one boxcar passing through Alvarado, Minnesota. NPR 5513 retains its CN nose herald, so if you ignore the subtle NPR evidence on the side, you can imagine CN SD60Fs frolicking in the snow. The train has just crossed the Snake River and see the 349 milepost sign - that's 349 track miles from Shoreham Yard in Minneapolis. This arm of the Soo Line served as a grain feeder for the mills in Minneapolis. Countless bushels of grain have passed over the rails here in the Red River Valley heading to Thief River Falls and further on to Minneapolis. They still do just maybe not terminate there.

Here's to wrapping up 2020! On to 2021!

What if I described seagull identification as "The Terminating Angel"?

The phrasing is reminiscent of surrealist art and film, like Luis Buñuel's 1962 film 'The Exterminating Angel'. In the film, a group of people at a dinner party are inexplicably unable to leave, and the "exterminating angel" is a METAPHOR for the forces that expose the baser human instincts of the trapped aristocrats.

In this vein, the "terminating angel" for seagull identification could suggest the end of a familiar illusion - the process of definitive gull ID could represent the point at which a casual observer's simple understanding of "SEAGULL" is broken down and replaced with a more complex, specific reality (e.g., this isn't just a seagull, it's a Western Gull, and here are its unique characteristics). Or it could personify the identification process itself as a higher power that, with a final, terminal flourish, brings an end to all uncertainty about the bird's identity.

In some cultures, a seagull symbolizes the transition between LIFE and DEATH. In this view the act of identification could be interpreted as moving from a state of not knowing to a state of definitive knowledge, the end of one state and the birth of another.

It's so true then, as Rainer Maria Rilke once wrote...every angel is terrifying.

A happy accident.

Your choice :)

This sort of thing is a bit of a select taste, but it appeals to my chromatic minimalism neural tingly-bits...

Besides, I rather like the diffraction rainbows on the arc edges too. We just have to share the delight in those don't we?

For the Crazy Tuesday Red theme.

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Crazy Tuesday!!

I was originally enrolled into the GETTY IMAGES collection as a contributor on April 9th 2012, and when links with FLICKR were terminated in March 2014, I was retained and fortunate enough to be signed up via a second contract, both of which have proved to be successful with sales of my photographs all over the world now handled exclusively by them.

On November 12th 2015 GETTY IMAGES unveiled plans for a new stills upload platform called ESP (Enterprise Submission Platform), to replace the existing 'Moment portal', and on November 13th I was invited to Beta test the new system prior to it being officially rolled out in December. ESP went live on Tuesday December 15th 2015 and has smoothed out the upload process considerably.

These days I take a far more leisurely approach to my photographic exploits, and having moved from professional Nikon equipment to consumer bodies and lenses, I travel light less constraints and more emphasis on the pure capture of the beauty that I see, more akin to my original persuits and goals some five decades previously when starting out. I would like to say a huge and heartfelt 'THANK YOU' to GETTY IMAGES, and the 22.893+ Million visitors to my FLICKR site.

**** This frame was chosen on August 7th 2018 to appear on FLICKR EXPLORE (Highest Ranking: #80. This is my 103rd photograph to be selected, which for me is both amazing and exciting, as I never view my images as worthy compared to some of the awesome photography out there. EXPLORE is Flickr's way of showcasing the most interesting photos within a given point in time -- usually over a 24 hour period.

Flickr receives about 6,000 uploads every minute -- That's about 8.6 million photos a day! From this huge group of images, the Flickr Interestingness algorithm chooses only 500 images to showcase for each 24-hour period. That's only one image in every 17,000!..... so I am really thrilled to have a frame picked and most grateful to every one of the 17.950 Million people who have visited, favourite and commented on this and all of my other photographs here on my FLICKR site. *****
