NAUERNA, Amsterdam Westerpoort – In the background at 14 km Tata Steel IJmuiden; a Steel Plant in IJmuiden and Velsen-Noord, Netherlands. Tata Steel IJmuiden was formerly known as Koninklijke Nederlandse Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken (KNHS) until 1996 (informally Hoogovens), and then Koninklijke Hoogovens Steel Factories, IJmuiden, The Netherlands.
The North Sea Canal (Dutch: Noordzeekanaal) is a Dutch Ship Canal, long 25 km, from Amsterdam to the North Sea at IJmuiden, constructed between 1865 and 1876 to enable seafaring Vessels to reach the Port of Amsterdam. This Man-Made Channel terminates at Amsterdam in the closed-off IJ Bay, which in turn connects to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal.
Stealthy male Sharp-shinned Hawk hunting my feeder. Judging from the feather fragments tangled in his right talon and lump in his craw, it looks like he's enjoyed some success.
Rare winter visitor. Uncommon during the rest of the year. Smallest hawk. Most often seen during the fall season's southern migration.
The Terminator crashed my daughter's wedding reception.

We have a strange small tree that came with the house purchase last year. Even as a tree hugger, I've not grown fond of this straggly stunted weeping something tree.
Rather resembles the spines of an umbrella.
But I did notice tiny clusters—this one about 1 inch/2.54 cm—of even tinier buds on various small drooping twigs. A tiny sign of spring.
Sigh. As we nurse our latest newly planted sequoias, cedars, and shore pines, this tree will continue to grow. Could not possibly terminate it, but it grows in sight of my home office windows.

Leaves: Alternate, seven to nine-lobed, oblong-ovate to oblong, five to ten inches long, four to six inches broad; seven to eleven lobes tapering gradually from broad bases, acute, and usually repandly dentate and terminating with long bristle-pointed teeth; the second pair of lobes from apex are largest; midrib and primary veins conspicuous. Lobes are often less deeply cut than most other oaks of the red oak group. Leaves emerge from the bud convolute, pink, covered with soft silky down above, coated with thick white tomentum below. When full grown are dark green and smooth, sometimes shining above, yellow green, smooth or hairy on the axils of the veins below. In autumn they turn a rich red, sometimes brown. Often the petiole and midvein are a rich red color in midsummer and early autumn, though this is not true of all red oaks. / from en.wiki/
Червоний дуб – напрочуд гарне дерево. В Україні навіть люди, які мало цікавляться природою навколо себе, восени звертають увагу на його червоне листя з гострими "зубами".
Батьківщина цього дерева – Північна Америка. До Європи його завезли наприкінці XVII, а в Україну – на початку XIX століття. Сьогодні в нашій країні американський дуб можна побачити не тільки в містах, де його використовують для озеленення, але й у лісах, де його активно висаджують лісівники. В кінці минулого року вийшла наукова стаття групи українських дослідників, присвячена тому, як дуб червоний впливає на українські ліси. Автори серед іншого показали, що в насадженнях американського дуба трав'янистих рослин було дуже мало або й зовсім немає. Тоді як у сусідньому лісі з дуба звичайного різні трав'янисті рослини почуваються чудово.
Річ у тім, що червоний дуб має дуже густий підріст, і в його тіні нічого не росте. Крім того, в наших умовах його листя довго не розкладається і вкриває землю щільним шаром, що заважає рости іншим рослинам. Нарешті, грають роль так звані алелопатичні властивості – червоний дуб виділяє сполуки, які пригнічують конкурентів.
Фактично, насадження американського дуба стають так званими "біологічними пустелями". Здалеку схоже на ліс, але якщо придивитися ближче – немає майже нічого, крім дерев одного виду.

The last "Ski Train" of the season operated by the Swedish company Snälltåget and hauled by a TRAXX 2, the 241-007, owned by Hectorrail passes through Ørestad. The composition travels overnight from Malmö to several ski stations in the Austrian Tirol and finally terminates at Salzburg Hbf, where it will make the trip back on Saturday. The night train calls at several Danish stations on the way, such as Høje-Taastrup (for those travelling from København) or Odense, before crossing Germany non-stop during the night.

The Golden Handle is a visual effect at the lunar terminator. and is visible once within a month for several hours.
About 10 days after new moon the valley of the rainbow bay (Sinus Iridum) is still in shadow, while the mountain peaks of the adjacent Montes Jura are already reached by sunlight due to their height of up to 2700 meters. Because of its concise shape, reminiscent of a handle, and the yellowish light reflected from the moon, this formation received the name "Golden Handle".

Bei einem Mondalter von ca. 10 Tagen nach Neumond liegt das Tal der Regenbogenbucht (Sinus Iridum) im Regenmeer (Mare Imbrium) noch im Schatten, während die Gipfel der über 400 Kilometer langen Bergkette des angrenzenden Juragebirges (Montes Jura) aufgrund ihrer Höhe von bis zu 2700 Metern bereits vom Sonnenlicht erreicht werden. Wegen ihrer prägnanten, an einen Henkel erinnernden Form und dem vom Mond gelblich reflektierten Licht erhielt diese Formation den Namen „Goldener Henkel“.
