With Christmas season in full swing and work starting to wind down for the year, my mind is starting to turn to "The North Country" as my wife, my son, and I get ready to visit her family in Potsdam, NY over the holidays. I really enjoy heading up to Potsdam for Christmas. For one, there's a better chance of snow being on the ground for the big day than here at home. Also, our typically lengthier stay often means free babysitting and a date with my wife at one of the restaurants in town, visits to the cozy Jernabi Coffehouse, and maybe catching a movie at the low-key Roxy theater. But, with each visit, there's more and more talk of my wife's parents potentially moving elsewhere once her dad retires, so we never quite know for sure whether our next visit to Potsdam will be our last.
So, just as I've done any time we've visited for an extended period, I plan on getting trackside at least a couple times.
Increasingly, my favorite shortline to visit up there is the Massena Terminal. Though the Massena Terminal doesn't have a lot of mileage, it's unique, especially considering the fact that it's a G&W-owned road whose engines still remain in their pre-G&W paint scheme. Add to that the friendly crews (unlike nearby "Welfare Road"-owned NYOG), and it's just a good, fun, relaxing time. I always find myself the only one trackside when I'm up there, too, which--while never a prerequisite--is certainly better than the mobs on roads like the Batten Kill. It's a throwback to my early years in the hobby, before Facebook revealed to everyone where everything was at any time.
Oddly enough, there wasn't any snow on the ground when I paid a visit to the Massena Terminal on a VERY cold Tuesday, December 29, 2020. However, it was a blue dome, and the cold temperatures led the crew to keep the normally-open radiator shutters on the engine closed, revealing the nice chevron striping on the nose. Here, MP15DC #14 has a healthy cut of covered hoppers in tow as it gives it everything it's got and rounds a curve just outside the Alcoa aluminum plant--the railroad's only customer and sole reason for its existence.

Today's trip to Glasgow kicked off with a 5am alarm call followed by a 40 minute drive to Heathrow, a rush through security and just enough time to grab an espresso in the lounge.
Wandering back to the car this evening after the return flight, I noticed the sunlight playing games on a handrail by my side.
I took another handrail shot a while ago - at the Tate Modern - and someone said the punctum was missing. I've been hunting for it ever since...
Most years, my wife and I travel up to Potsdam, NY to visit her family over Memorial Day Weekend. We've established a pattern where we'll take Thursday and Friday off, travel up on Thursday, and head home on Monday. The last few years, my wife has graciously been fine with me utilizing most of Friday as a railroad photography day. The Friday before Memorial Day 2020 turned out to be hands-down the most successful outing I've ever had in "The North Country": A blue dome, the NYOG running with VTR GP18 #801 between Norfolk and Norwood, CSX running Q620, Q621, and a weed-sprayer train all in daylight, and my first time catching the Massena Terminal. It was such a great day, I was inspired to do a "theme week" here on Flickr about it--a rarity for me due to work and parenting.
Fast forward to Memorial Day Weekend 2021, and it was clear when I woke up on Friday that I wasn't going to have a repeat--at least as far as the weather went. Furthermore, I had a plan that--if it went well, it could have opened up some more doors, but if it didn't go well I'd basically fall flat on my face. Well, the latter is what happened. I've been hoping to make a more personal connection with the NYOG guys since I've really become intrigued by that railroad, especially its history stretching multiple railroads and operators such as the Rutland, the Norwood & St. Lawerence, and the St. Lawrence & Raquette River. So--though with the clouds I didn't have much of an interest in shooting the NYOG to start the day since I cleaned up under sun last year--I still began my day by heading up to the engine house at Norfolk with a print and a dozen donuts in my hands. After parking in my usual spot at the end of the public road across from the engine house, I approached one of the guys, handed over the donuts and the print, and explained I was a photographer who only came up a few times a year and just wanted to finally introduce myself. The guy thanked me, turned to walk away, and I asked if they knew their plan for the day. "I can't tell you that, unfortunately," was the response. To say I was very embarrassed would be an understatement, lol. I went back to my car, then promptly left for the Massena Terminal which I had a cloudy-day angle or two I had been wanting to get.
The shot you see here was one of those goals, so I was at least able to check that box. Here, Massena Terminal MP15 #14 leads its train across the Massena Canal, just about to cross the last public road before entering Alcoa. I stress again that you can only do this angle from this side of the bridge on a cloudy day, so this is pretty much the best anyone can do here.
Getting this shot--followed by nice waves by the always-friendly Massena Terminal crew (maybe I delivered donuts to the wrong place...)--I felt satisfied. Unfortunately, the rest of the day only went downhill from there. I stupidly chased Q621 south from Norwood to DeKalb Junction (nothing special, especially not under clouds), then went on a wild goose chase trying to track the NYOG back down. Trying to find them between Norwood and Ogdensburg is like trying to find a needle in a haystack, with no EOT to hear over the scanner and no roads closely paralleling the tracks. I checked many crossings, stopped and listened for horns, etc. Nothing. Finally, I got back to Norfolk just in time to see the 801 solo trundling the last stretch of trackage to the engine house, and a check of the interchange at Norwood after that revealed that they must have made a round trip--with the 801 no less--between Norwood and Ogdensburg. All in all, it was one of those days that makes you consider "retiring" from the hobby, or at least stepping away from it for a while...

Buffalo NY Central Terminal, September 1989. I felt like "Indiana Bruce in the Temple of Transportation" while we wandered through this mega structure. This was one of the last great railroad stations built, opening in 1929, when rail passenger travel had already passed its peak. It never was used to capacity and was finally abandoned about 1980. Quite eerie to wander through its great concourse and along the weed overgrown platforms. Scan from 35mm slide.
The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, was the Central Railroad of New Jersey's waterfront passenger terminal in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was also serviced by CNJ-operated Reading Railroad trains, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and the Lehigh Valley Railroad during various periods in its 78 years of operation.
The terminal was built in 1889, replacing an earlier one that had been in use since 1864.
The headhouse was renovated and incorporated into Liberty State Park. The station has been listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places[5] and National Register of Historic Places since September 12, 1975.
58008 engages in a spot of shunting at Furzebrook. The tanks were split into 2 rakes and one half loaded with liquid Propane, the other with liquid Butane. Locomotives were not permitted to work fully into the terminal as it was deemed a Class I hazardous area, so loaded rakes were moved very slowly out of the terminal confines by a track based mechanism. These were slip workings, where a full load of empties were swapped for a full rake of loaded.

The night of my first and only day chasing UP 4014, I headed down to Denver to crash with a friend before facing the long drive back to Chicago. In the morning and early afternoon, I had barely just enough time to explore downtown Denver a bit- it was my first time there, and I'll definitely be back! Naturally, the first logical stop was Union Station.
Over the past several years or so, Denver Union Station has been transformed into a public space for Denverites to eat, drink, shop and meet, whether they're catching trains at the station's brand-new platforms or not. The former concourse really embodies the concept of train station as public meeting place, and it has proven very popular. The former ticket windows are now home to the Terminal Bar, which appears to be doing a pretty brisk business for an early Sunday afternoon.

Please enjoy an image of Fishermen’s Terminal, located along Lake Washington Canal in Seattle. This was taken during the one-day intermission of Seattle’s “Fog Affair” last month when the sun came out and yielded a very beautiful blue hour that transitioned into a very clear night, only to be accosted by the fog again a few hours later!
