I must have dropped this crocus bulb on the patio bricks last fall when I was planting my planters. What a persistent little beauty .... an example of the tenacity of life.

I know this shot is messy and distracting, but I love it a lot because it describes very well the way life feels right now. Chaotic. Frustrating. Like trying to suck nutrients out of a rock. (A rock that slightly resembles an alligator in the right light)
Also, I'm beginning to think that aloe vera plants are some of the coolest ever.

Valor is usually forced to wear a lifejacket when we visit any body of water because he does not appear to have a strong sense of self preservation. Or it is at least completely overruled in the face of an object in need of fetching. When a Dane, a Mastiff, and three Goldens decided this large stick was too far out in the river to be retrieved Valor scoffed at them all and went after it himself.
I finally achieved my dream of visiting a Civil War battlefield. I spent the day wandering the grounds of the Stones River National Battlefield in Murfreesboro, TN. Man, what an amazing experience and location.
Battle of Stones River, also called Battle of Murfreesboro , (December 31, 1862–January 2, 1863), bloody but indecisive American Civil War clash in Tennessee that was a psychological victory for Union forces. General Braxton Bragg’s 34,700-man Confederate army was confronted on Stones River near Murfreesboro by 41,400 Union troops under General William S. Rosecrans, who had orders to drive Bragg out of eastern Tennessee. After the first day’s bitter, seesaw battle, the battered Union army was on the verge of retreating, but Rosecrans decided to hold fast. On January 3, Bragg’s equally exhausted Confederate forces withdrew southward. Rosecrans’s tenacity thus averted a potentially serious Union defeat. Union casualties numbered 12,906; Confederate losses totaled 11,739. Stones River National Battlefield (established 1927) commemorates the battle.
This is an Adlumia fungosa (Allegheny vine, or bleeding-heart vine, as I like to call it) from a seed that made its way into in the sparse soil of our front steps.
