Ollantaytambo is the best-preserved Inca village in Peru. It is located in the Valle Sagrado (Sacred Valley) at an altitude of 2800 meters. But the area was occupied by the Killke culture long before the Inca conquered the area around 1440. During Inca times, perhaps 1000 people lived here. Ollantaytambo also is the site of one of the few battles the Incas won over the Spanish. After Manco Inca had to flee from Cuzco he staged a temporarily successful rebellion against the Spanish from here and beat Hernando Pizarro's troops when they tried to take Ollantaytambo in 1537.

Our water utility is doing maintenance. They are going to turn off the regular mains under the street and use these temporary ones in the gutters for a while. The regular mains not only supply the houses on the street, they also supply the fire hydrants. So, we have a temporary fire hydrant!

"The station was originally opened in 1867 as part of the Great Northern Railway's line between Finsbury Park and Edgware stations. As part of their only partially completed Northern Heights plan, the London Underground started serving the station in 1941, using new platforms in tunnels beneath the surface station. The platforms of the surface station remain, but were last used in 1954, and the section of the line through them to Finsbury Park was lifted by 1972.
"Highgate station was originally constructed by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway in the 1860s on its line from Finsbury Park station to Edgware station. Before the line was opened it was purchased in July 1867 by the larger Great Northern Railway (GNR), whose main line from King's Cross ran through Finsbury Park on its way to Potters Bar and the north. The station opened along with the railway to Edgware on 22 August 1867.
"Because of the hilly terrain, the station was built in a deep cutting excavated from Highgate Hill adjacent to Archway Road. Tunnels penetrated the hillside at each end of the station, leading towards East Finchley to the north and Crouch End to the south. When built, the station had two side platforms, with three tracks between them, and a station building on the south side. A footbridge linked the two platforms.
A branch line was constructed from Highgate to Alexandra Palace by the Muswell Hill Railway (MHR) and opened on 22 May 1872. The new branch split from the original route north of the station in a wide arc around Highgate Wood. The next station on the branch line when it opened was Muswell Hill, and in 1902 an intermediate station opened at Cranley Gardens.
"In the 1880s, the station was rebuilt, with two tracks flanking a central island platform instead of the two side platforms. The island platform was accessed from a ticket office in the middle of the footbridge. In 1911, the MHR branch was taken over by the GNR. After the 1921 Railways Act created the Big Four railway companies, the GNR became part of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923.
"In 1935, the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) announced a proposal, which became known as the Northern Heights project, to take over the LNER lines from Finsbury Park to Edgware, High Barnet and Alexandra Palace, and link them to both the Northern line at East Finchley and to the Northern City line at Finsbury Park.
"To provide an interchange between the new deep-level platforms and the existing surface platforms, a subterranean concourse was constructed immediately beneath the existing station. The concourse was connected to the deep-level platforms with escalators and to the existing platforms by stairs. Street entrances to the concourse were provided from the south (Archway Road) and the north (Priory Gardens). At the same time, the buildings on the surface platforms were partly reconstructed and the footbridge was removed. Northern line services through the new tunnels to East Finchley started operating on 3 July 1939 although they did not stop at Highgate until later.
"After the war, plans to complete the Northern Heights project were reviewed. In early 1946, the conversion of the LNER line from Mill Hill East to Edgware was scheduled by the LPTB for completion between January 1947 and June 1948.
"After a temporary closure between October 1951 and January 1952, British Railways (the successor to the LNER) ended passenger services between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace permanently on 3 July 1954. British Rail freight traffic continued to pass through the station until 1964. After freight traffic ceased, the line continued to be used for occasional London Underground rolling stock transfers between Highgate depot and the Northern City line, with the stock being pulled over the unelectrified lines by battery locomotives. This ceased in 1970 because of the poor condition of some of the intermediate bridges, and the track was lifted through the surface platforms in 1972.
"One of the GNR's station buildings remains on the north side of the surface platforms, used as a private residence. Much of the route between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace now forms part of the Parkland Walk, although this bypasses the station site for safety reasons."

Cadet 3935 is going round wearing an incorrect registration mark on the back.
I don't often video buses - but this seemed a good opportunity to prove the mistake. You have to look carefully, but the back shows GY52 YUY.
Probably more interesting is that the bus is driving onto the wrong side of the road, being on a big diversion due to the cycle race. With much of Woking town centre closed off (Victoria Way between Lockfield Drive and Victoria Arch, and Guildford Road and station approach around the one way system, as well as Goldsworth Road and Church Street West), buses were having to divert to reach a temporary stop in the town centre.
Here, 3935 has diverted from the Triangle via Parley Drive, Lockfield Drive, Victoria Way, Chetsey Road, Stanley Road and the Broadway to reach the temporary stop by the station. It is on its way to Guildford on the 34, and has also run from the temporary stop via Locke Way and Duke Street, back to Stanley Road, Chertsey Road, Victoria Way, where it is seen here turning right onto Lockfield Drive. It will then continue via Parley Drive, Triggs Lane, Wych Hill Lane to normal route - though I don't know if they serve Claremont Avenue or not.
“Pork: Eat it, Don’t Spend it” was the theme of a bipartisan barbeque pork lunch hosted today by U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill and Republican Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona, to discuss the introduction of their bill to make permanent the temporary moratorium on congressional earmarks that McCaskill helped put into place in 2010.
At the lunch, which featured Arthur Bryant’s original Kansas City barbeque sauce and special guest former Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, the Senators focused on recent hearings in the House of Representatives to explore lifting Congress’ self-imposed, temporary ban on the practice of earmarking. McCaskill and Flake’s Earmark Elimination Act would permanently ban the practice.
“Earmarks are the Washington swamp creature that just never seems to die—emerging from the lower depths every few years in an effort to waste taxpayer dollars on politicians’ pet projects,” said McCaskill, who has never requested an earmark and has been the leading Democratic voice opposing them. “Our bipartisan bill would ban their return by permanently ending the practice of pork-barrel patronage so we can ensure Missourians’ taxpayer dollars are protected, and projects are prioritized on merit.”
“It’s time to stick a fork in congressional pork with a permanent ban on earmarking,” said Flake. “Republicans were beaten like a borrowed mule in the 2006 elections largely because of the corruption associated with earmarks. Let’s not test the voters again by leaving the door open for a return to the pork barrel politics that sent members of Congress to prison and saddled taxpayers with a bridge to nowhere, a teapot museum, and countless other wasteful pet projects.”
For years, the earmarking process was notorious for its secrecy and lack of oversight or accountability, with funding for politicians' pet projects often awarded based on political influence instead of on merit. McCaskill’s legislation would expand the ongoing temporary moratorium on earmarks to a permanent ban. Specifically, the legislation would ban all earmarks, and define earmarks as any congressionally directed spending item, limited tax benefit, or limited tariff benefit.
McCaskill, the Senate’s leading Democratic opponent of earmarking, has led the fight to permanently ban earmarks from the legislative process. In 2010, McCaskill worked with bipartisan colleagues to put in place the current moratorium on earmarks. Additionally, a provision included in a recent highway bill, based on legislation McCaskill introduced with Senator Flake, is allowing Missouri to claw back more than $72 million in previously unspent earmarked funds that would never have otherwise been used—giving the state the resources to spend on critically needed transportation and infrastructure projects within a 50-mile radius of the project site of the original earmark.

After a bizarre turn of events the other day left me temporarily childless, I decided to treat myself to a burger and fries at the shake shack. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shake_Shack I have been there a couple of times in the past, but I never had to wait on line for very long. This time, however, was a different story. I waited on line for like 40 minutes, no shit! Luckily I have no job, or life, or responsibilities, so I can kill time like that. Thats just how I roll these days. Anyhoo, the burger was great, the fries were pretty good, and I would trade it all to go "animal style" at in and out any day of the week.

Our resident Bewick's Wren rather embarassingly molted out all of its tail feathers, making it a really stubby little bird for several weeks!
Last October, a fire broke out at student flats next to where the Megabus drops off in Bristol. The Colston Street bus stop was unavailable for use and since then Megabus has been using a temporary stop on Bond Street. Many months on, perhaps it's going to become the permanent stop?
In any event, here we see one of their regular London bound services loading up.
