The penultimate sunset at Concordia research station in Antarctica marks the beginning of a very exciting time for the 12-member crew: the coming of Antarctic night and the winter-over.
ESA sponsored medical doctor Hannes Hagson and his crew mates are finally embarking on their ‘real’ mission in Antarctica: living and work in isolation for six months in the name of spaceflight research.
The Italian-French outpost Concordia is located 3233 m above sea level where temperatures can drop to –80°C in the complete frozen darkness outside. The sun disappears behind the horizon for four months. No supplies or people can be flown in during the winter months; and the high altitude causes the crew to experience chronic hypobaric hypoxia or lack of oxygen in the brain.
These conditions are as close to living on another planet as humans can get on Earth.
For this reason, Hannes is facilitating biomedical experiments on himself and his crewmates to understand how humans cope with living in extreme isolation. From sleep studies to gut health measurements to mindful practices, the crew are poked and prodded to help researchers understand and overcome the challenges extreme environments, like space, pose to present and future explorers.
This image was taken by Hannes on 3 May. The last full sunset took place the day after but appeared only as a thin sliver in the sky.
Follow Hannes during his winter-over on the Chronicles from Concordia blog.

"Telling the story about how he makes the best wine .... about picking the grapes.... stepping on them ..... mushing them all up and squeezing out the best of them..... to get a great drink. Why they want to drink it I don't know.... who knows where those feet have been before they stomped the grapes!"
"Anyway.. that's the story behind the photo Radcliffe.. aren't you glad I made you take off your sunglasses so you could see the page? ...""

In the St. Marx Cemetary (German: Sankt Marxer Friedhof, also called Biedermeierfriedhof St. Marx), which was used from 1784 until 1874 and is a park now. It's located in Landstraße, the 3rd district of Vienna.
On the tombstone on the left we are told that the lard dealer and landlord Michael Schaller died on January 20 1867 at the age of 80, one month after his 70-year-old wife Anna. He had married her, when she was a widow. Her son, Michael Schaller's stepson Friedrich Kaden, died 15 days after his mother had died at the age of 37. Thus there were three deaths in this family in a period of one month.
The persons mentioned on the tombstone in the middle died much younger than Mr. Schaller and his wife. The innkeeper's wife Marie Schmidtleitner died in 1862 at the age of 21. On August 4 1866 a one-year-old boy with the name Franz Schmidtleitner died. On March 9 1869 the innkeeper Franz Schmidtleitner died at the age of 51. He was in all probability the boy's father, but who was the boy's mother?
On the tombstone on the right we are told that in 1862 the parents of Adolf and Aloisia Plischke lost their three-year old son and their one-year-old daughter within five days. Perhaps the two children died of smallpox. In the 18th century lots of people, mostly children, died of this disease during epidemics. With the introduction of smallpox vaccine at the beginning of the 19th century the disease was reduced considerably. But it wasn't defeated for good, because there was much skepticism and fear in connection with vaccination among Vienna's population. From 1830 until 1860 there were several smaller smallpox epidemics in the city, but in the 1860s the number of deaths began to increase strongly again. After the smallpox pandemic at the beginning of the 1870s, which caused 3,334 deaths in the city in the year 1872 and 1,410 deaths in 1873, cumpulsory vaccination for school children was introduced. Thus the disease was virtually vanquished by the end of the century.

I had a chance to watch a debate on "Bottle Feeding vs BreastFeeding". It was interesting that both sides pointed out the advantages.
I heard many good things that breastfeeding benefits to both Mother and Baby.
I can remember my Mother and My Wife said "I breastfed and I'm proud of it"
I'm happy to be a part of the story.

After a couple years of occasionally telling a friend 'hey lets plan a FGLK chase' we finally put down a date, that being May 1st. GS-2 is seen here between Geneva and Waterloo with three Geeps and 10 cars for CSX in Solvay. After finishing the day they would only have picked up three gons in Auburn and returned with 12 cars to Gevena.
Seem to have a thing for finally getting out to see shortlines and they have short trains. Oh well
whenever I caught Hazel and Hayley alone together they always seemed like they were "up" to something.
I was a little disappointed with this shot because both of them have more intense lips / blush than it appears here. Difficult to capture in daylight.
Linus was jealous when I was taking photos of Fynn with his Christmas bandana. After a while Fynn had pity with Linus and decided to lend him the precious bandana but not without telling him that wearing a Christmas bandana is a great responsibilty. Linus was very proud of his new accessory although red is probably not the best colour for him and the bandana is slightly too small for such a big cat.
My app was telling me all weekend that I had "a 0% chance of seeing the northern lights in [my] current location." It was wrong every night.
Better this way to show you all the story =) Yes it was a big and a very beautiful moth! And it wasnt the first time i saved one!
Giant and Tiger Swallowtails have started returning to the backyard. The males always seem to show up first and they flit about furiously looking for a lady. This Giant beauty decided to take a break and fuel up so if a lady does drop in he will be ready to swoop her off her wings. Unless this is a lady that snuck in... I have a difficult time telling the giant boys from the girls unless the wings are open.

Spring maintenance also begins... Wow, there are a lot of oak leaves to rake and set out at the curb for the yard waste guys. I used to use oak leaves as a natural mulch but mosquitos love that so I don't do it anymore. The yard waste guy probably don't appreciate me in the spring but I sure appreciate them.
Of course I have a lot more to maintain than just fallen leaves. It's time to cut everything that needs a trim. I keep saying I am going to hire someone to assist me but I never follow through with that. I'm afraid they will not be as careful as I am when it comes to inspecting items prior to cutting them. I don't want a chrysalis to get accidently tossed out. And I am accustomed to watching my step in the yard so I don't step on a caterpillar that is on a journey, but others might not watch their step. Apparently I'm a worrywart when it comes to the critters in my yard.
Company will soon be here and I want everything to be beautiful :) If I were a Genie I could blink my eyes and all would be perfect. Then again, I would not get to spend the time in the yard so that might not be a good thing :) I love my yard time. Perhaps I should recruit my company to carefully assist.
May your day be beautiful and your wishes come true. Happy snapping.
This astronomical clock was was first installed in 1410 in what is now called the old town hall in Prague, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working. At the top of every hour, hundreds of people gather to see, here and photograph the display at the top of the clock.
And yes, I can spell stories, but the title of this photo is a play on words, as I thought that each of the apartments in this block of flats could reveal a story or two. Some people in town will be pleased to see the back of the soon to be demolished bus station, but in reality, it is eye-sores such as this that will blot the landscape for decades to come. 10th March 2015
The Imperial Treasury houses an extraordinary collection of insignia, coronation vestments and mementos telling the long story and tradition of the House of Habsburg as one of the most influential dynasties of the Christian Occident.
Its key pieces include jewels and relics of the Holy Roman Empire as unique representatives of a millennium of European history. They evoke important political events and the culture and world of thought of times and forms of government long gone.
The Crown of Rudolf II, which he had made in 1602, is dazzling in its material and artistic wealth. Some 200 years later it became the official Crown of the new Austrian Empire.
Other highlights include mementos of Napoleon and his son from his marriage to the Austrian Archduchess Marie Louise as well as pieces of jewellery that belonged to Habsburg empresses and archduchesses, including Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”).

The general idea behind Graffiti Underworld was to collect the wildest graffiti related stories in the voice of the writers themselves and compile them into a book. Each writer’s section reads as if they were sitting face to face with you telling their tale. These stories are meant to put you into the world of the graffiti writer, crawling through train yards, locked in jail cells, running down fire escapes and other forgotten corners of our cities.
I ended up with far too much content to fit into a 200 page book. The following are some outtakes from my interview with HOUR Pigs Crew.
Hour:
I was staying in Oregon for a while, Eugene, Oregon. The first crew I was ever in was called PHO. Putting Heads Out. A lot of the members had gotten in trouble in New Mexico and they bailed to Oregon. They were like you could come up here. They all had a house. You should come up here and stay with us. I was trying to get out and go to Seattle. I ended up going to Oregon. We stayed at this house. It was like a two bedroom house and there were like eight or nine people that lived there. None of us had jobs. We would just party every night. We would just hustle, get money and paint and all that shit. We’d do cart runs of food and cart runs of paint. This chick always let us have parties at her house. We had this three day rager at her house. We racked all this food and beer. In Oregon we would steal beer and return the bottles and buy more beer. So these kids are talking shit to my friend. I go get a couple more people.
They all start piling into this SUV, it’s got rims, it’s brand new, it’s got TV’s, nice as fuck. I see this kid pull open the door and jump in the car. I run across the street and there’s these dudes standing there. They’re like we don’t know what the fuck is going on leave us alone. I told one of my boys to stand in front of the car. I reach over the passenger to the driver and I tell him that’s my fucking brother you run him over and Ima fucking kill you. He’s like “I don’t know what’s going on?” I grab him by the hair and slam his head into the window. I was like “That’s what’s going on!” I tried to pull his keys out of his ignition but I was kind of anxious, so I didn’t turn the key first. So I’m like ripping at the keychain. I bent up the key and it fucked up the ignition. He’s like what the fuck you doing to my car. His CD player was down and I fucking punched down on the CD player and broke it off. I reach back in the back seat and his TV was there open and I folded it backwards so it hit the roof the wrong way and snapped off. I’m like “That’s what the fuck I’m doing!” My friend was pounding this dude nasty. Both his eyes were black. All these chicks were in the car and all these dudes were in the car screaming like chicks and they’re like “Go! Go! Drive the fucking car!” He was like “I can’t this dude’s gonna kill me if I run over his friend.” I left the car and right outside the car there was this house for rent with the metal for rent sign. It was one of the big ones not like the plastic red and white ones. I picked it up out of the ground and started belting the side of their car like sick, putting dents and holes. The whole back of the suburban was filled with all this shit and I start breaking the windows out of the side and I broke the window out of the back and all the shit started falling out. They started freaking out even more. I started putting holes in the other side and they ended up skirting and bailed out. When they bailed more shit started falling out. One of my friends started picking shit up that had falling out. A brand new Playstation in the box had fallen out with a whole book full of games.
We sold that the next day for a couple hundred bucks. That got us some food for a little while. When we we’re leaving, the cops starting piling in. The whole block started filling up. I put my arm around this girl that I had never even met before and we just walked down the block like I was trying to avoid all the confrontation. We had a party the next night at that same house and I killed a handle of Jose Cuervo and a case of beast and ended up fighting all my friends. I got my nose broke. It felt like my friend blackened both my eyes, broke my nose, and busted my lip in one hit. It brought me to my knees, brutally. I was supposed to go to the bus station to go to Seattle to meet up with some kids and they wouldn’t let me on the bus. I was like “Can I still get on the bus?” They were like “What are you kidding me, we can smell the alcohol on your breath and your covered in blood. We can’t let you on the bus.” I was like fuck that I need to get out of here. Let me on this fucking bus. I started to get on the bus and one of the dudes grabbed me, and pulled me off the bus. I was like “What the fuck, you wanna end up looking like me!?” They called the cops on me and this girl that took me to the bus station was like “Leave him alone he’s drunk.” I stumbled down the block and ended up passing out on the street and she drug me by the ankles into her little Honda Civic hatchback and took me back to the party and I just passed out on the couch. My boy who broke my nose woke me up the next morning with a sandwich and a beer and was like my bad.

I was struggling with the title for this picture I took at Goldfishmarket located on Tung Choi street in Hong Kong. I could have chosen street-photography. But for me it is more than that. In this image there is so much going on: the "merchandise" in all it's forms and colours, the lady walking, the rain, the traffic, "who's living in the apartments on the left?", "what are the girls in the background looking at?" etc, etc...
I like to tell stories. IRL, but also in my images. So I came up with a this new (?) genre.
Have a great weekend!!
