Value And Service

The NATO phonetic alphabet is used to communicate words, spelled one letter at a time, over radio or telephony devices. The alphabet was devised so that similar sounding characters, such as P and B, could be distinguished—over the radio or telephone—where the conse–quences of misinterpretation could be disastrous.

There is something about the clarity and simplicity of this system which reminded us of the Nokia Pure typeface and its role in ‘Connecting People’.

In our poster NOKIA PURE is spelt out using the Finnish version of the NATO phonetic alphabet, which is mainly comprised of Finnish Christian names.

The poster is printed from wooden plates—which were cut by computer—in a contemporary take on wood block printing. Reproducing letterforms which will mainly be experienced through the interfaces of mobile devices in a decidedly pre–digital way.
