Something Else Tour 2013
Performing in his hometown, Kansas City at the Midland Theatre on October 30th, 2013
I'm doing some product shots - some mealworm companies wanted some shots of Bluebirds eating mealworms. The high tech feeder shown here is a pill bottle top on the end of a stick. They might want a slightly different shot.
I had to move the man cave 50 yards down to the lower 40 to get the weedy area in the shot.
For those people that worry about mealworms chewing their way out of the birds from the insides, let me just say that most of the birds seem to recognize that this may be a potential problem. Bluebirds tend to beat the podwads out of the mealworms on some hard surface while other birds, like Cardinals, move the worm back and forth in their beaks several times, basically biting it about 20 times all over its body.
These are the same two birds from last year. They have eaten a lot of mealworms and seem to be happy about it. I limit how many they get each day, so that they have a varied diet, but when food seems scarce, I up the amounts. Now that their chicks are ready to fledge and are eating everyone out of house and home, I let them have as many worms as the whole family will eat in half an hour twice a day. Once in the morning, and again in late afternoon.
They don't feed them to the chicks at all for about the first two weeks after the babies hatch. During that time, they feed them mostly Wolf Spiders, Caterpillars and Katydids.
Two batches of House Wrens should be hatching any day now, and there is a Great Horned Owl in the tree across the street hooting (a bit odd for this time of year).

In 2009, I was asked by Indiana Tech's women's soccer coach to photograph soccer games. It was my first paying gig and it was pretty sweet. These are some of my favorites.
Tech Cocktail 5 at John Barelycorn's in Wrigleyville. Sinlgehop supplied the green glow mugs and kept the drinks flowing.
Tech Cocktail always seems to happen on the 12th of the month. This was the 1st Anniversary of the Chicago networking event.
On the 12th of the month. I post 12 photos of my day.
I forgot my normal camera and used my camera phone
Another successful KAP session for World Wide KAP Week 2014, this time at Michigan Technological University. I could not have asked for a nicer spring day to fly. Winds were largely reliable, though whenever I'd get close to the big trees it'd begin to slacken and threaten my camera. The winds know when the danger is highest!
Photo taken by a camera suspended from a kite - kite aerial photography, or KAP for short
Unsurprisingly (as with the two leisure batteries) the RT's engine one was knackered too ...
To avoid any more load than necessary in the engine starting one when camping I have moved powering the stereo to the leisure batteries.
