Yesterday Dracula and I worked together to put up this vinyl stick up wallpaper in the built in shelves in the kitchen. It had been on the to-do list since August. We had to pattern match down the center as the vertical pattern wallpaper wasn’t wide enough for this space. I was dreading it, but with a good plan in place to make this easier we got it done in no time really. We’ve been hanging a lot of wall art and giving away art we don’t think we’ll hang here. It’s slow going because we’re trying to be very deliberate with our choices (and we know we have some more wall painting to do in some rooms that we’re also putting off, lol). I have been fantasizing about a new rug in the kitchen, but I think that will wait till next year as rugs are pricey. The whole house felt so cozy yesterday and Dracula made us a delicious tofu scramble for breakfast and an incredible chili for dinner. I am so happy to be home.
Sculpted in 1883 by Jean Turcan, this artwork depicts the characters from a poem by Jean-Pierre Claris de FLORIAN. Both named "L'aveugle et le paralytique" (The blind and the paralytic), it narrates how a blind offered a lame man to carry him. This way they would never be alone again, and they would complement each other.
This sculpture is exposed in Arles, inside the old archbishopric. You can see dozens of bird feathers laying around ... I don't know what happened, but it must have been one hell of a fight !
Here is the poem I mentioned for those who want to read it :
L'aveugle et le paralytique
Aidons-nous mutuellement,
La charge des malheurs en sera plus légère ;
Ils demandaient au Ciel de terminer leur vie ;
Mais leurs cris étaient superflus,
Ils ne pouvaient mourir. Notre paralytique,
Près du malade se trouva ;
Que je ne puis faire un seul pas ;
Vous-même vous n'y voyez pas :
A quoi nous servirait d'unir notre misère ?
- A quoi ? répond l'aveugle ; écoutez.
Vos yeux dirigeront mes pas mal assurés ;
Bring swimsuits -- or at least a change of clothes -- if you want to experience the Casey Jr. Splash 'n' Soak Station! Just like the name indicates, you will be completely soaked after playing in the water here!
Be aware that even guests who sit around the perimeter of this attraction may find themselves the target of a stray water jet, so protect your cameras and other electronics accordingly.

A group of small ants (probably Messor sp.), working together in order to accomplish a task that would be impossible for any single one of them: carry a big dead moth to their nest, over a vertical surface! "Ισχύς εν τη ενώσει" (translation: union is strength)
Best viewed Large, On Black.
I converted it to b&w, because there wasn't much color to it anyway (the ants were mostly black, the moth mostly white, and the surface is white marble), and I think it lets the viewer better concentrate on the concept I wanted to illustrate (teamwork), rather than being distracted by glimpses of color here and there.
Have a wonderful week! :-)
Mr.Steve took the photo on my camera, with my equipment, and my instructions (he never used filters before), and I edited the photo afterwards.

Ok! The pool company showed up today to acid wash my pool and put in a new pump so I'm going to use this one for my teamwork assignment. And, I also have a picture of the electricians putting in my new patio lights...lots of stuff getting done today, 17 months after Hurricane Wilma destroyed it all!
Preparing manioc meal involves many steps: soaking and grating manioc roots, pressing out excess liquid and roasting the meal.
Despite the poor light, it was great to watch a group of feeding cormorants in Christchurch harbour, working together, surfacing and diving like a team of well-drilled synchronised swimmers!
I'm not much of a horseman. I've gotten close to horses, but never have actually ridden one. Considering that humanity has worked with horses for so long, I find it not totally surprising how the rider and the horse in this photo seem to work so effortlessly together. There's something archaic and wonderful about humans working with animals in such a way. Whether they be hunters or shepherds, we have shaped and have been shaped by our animal friends
