Tea tree flowers, Wilsons Promontory NP

Wild stands around the junction of the Jimboomba - Mandolin Road and Ann Street, Jimboomba.

These stands of M. irbyana occur only in a geographically limited patch of southeast Queensland; on heavy, cracking clays developed from Mesozoic, Cainozoic and Quaternary sediments with impeded drainage, in Beaudesert, Boonah, Esk, Ipswich, Laidley and Logan Local Government Areas. The species has paperbark type bark, and the weepiness of the branchlets varies from tree to tree.

Her ovipositor is so long, that Ron's nickname of a flying stick seems to describe her very well :-)

Adhering to this week’s theme 'Freedom', Maude worked in a champagne glass in celebration of ‘Freedom’ maybe a fraction premature but let’s get prepared. The tonal colours of the Flapjack and the Lacy Double Tulip are soothing, while the few sprigs of Teatree look like champagne bubbles rising.

Unknown species of Leptospermum. I find Tea Trees quite confounding, though I do love them for the sheer number of insects they attract when in flower! [Mount Kaputar National Park, NSW]

Tea Tree (Leptospermum sp.) with large flowers. Best guess is the Woolly Teatree (Leptospermum lanigerum) though very open to hearing other suggestions if I am wrong. [Kanangra-Boyd National Park, NSW]

Botanical name: Kunzea ericoides

Common name: Tea Tree (white)

Maori name: Kanuka

Kanuka is common throughout lowland and mountain scrub and along forest margins in the North and South Islands, from sea level to 900 metres. Kanuka can grow up to 15 metres tall with long strips of loose, papery bark and small leaves that feel silky when young. Flowers are small, to 5 mm, have a musty, heady scent, white with purple centre, long stamens and are formed in clusters, they quite often smoother the tree like a white blanket throughout summer.

Kanuka oil was used by Maori and is now sold in New Zealand and other countries as Teatree oil for its anti-worm, antibacterial and insecticidal properties. Maori also used pounded kanuka seed capsules to make a poultice for running sores.
