I don't know how his multi-tasking would go if, say, three fish bit at the same time. I suppose he wouldn't fret an unlikely disaster like that.

Fifteen New York Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa received their United States citizenship during a historic naturalization ceremony at the United States Embassy in Djibouti, Mar. 10. The Soldiers, all belonging to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team are in the midst of a 9 month deployment to CJTF-HOA conducting security and crisis response operations, and are slated to return to the U.S. this summer. The ceremony is the first of its kind in the newly constructed U.S. Embassy, and is a historic event for CJTF-HOA, who has never before seen so many of its members become naturalized citizens at once. Maj. Gen. Jami Shawley, the CJTF-HOA commander, and the honorable Jonathan Pratt, the United States Ambassador to Djibouti, spoke at the ceremony and were among the first to congratulate the new citizens. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the king's horses and all the king's men

Couldn't put Humpty together again.

In order to become once more a participant in society, Philoctetes must leave behind both the spiritual and physical contours of the savage Lemnian landscape. The task, however, is not one-sided. Society must also be reshaped to receive the hero whom it once so cruelly rejected. The social order conceived by Odysseus is based on success in achieving specific goals irrespective of individual protest or suffering. This cannot be the spiritual home of the pain-wracked outcast, nor could Philoctetes accept a place in such a world.

Charles Segal, Tragedy and Civilisation: an interpretation of Sophocles, ch.10.

Damage in individuals can take so many forms. Sometimes it's simple and physical, like the ripped-up piece of paper, Humpty Dumpty's fall and Philoctetes' snake bite. Or, it can be emotional/social, like Philoctetes' exile on Lemnos. In either case, trauma involves the severance of the individual from what until then appeared to represent order. At the least, the instantiation of damage is evidence that damage actually can occur. It is a vivid - and more often than not, unwanted - reminder that our hold on the things we cherish and believe to be invulnerable is so immensely frail. At worst, some traumata set the individual entirely apart from his society, thereby robbing him of those integral parts of being human that cannot be lived except in a community of men.

Philoctetes' story is highly metaphorical. A Greek soldier during the Trojan wars, he suffers a snake bite that becomes infected. To save themselves of the bad stench and the bad luck he is supposed to bring, the Greeks leave the ailing Philoctetes on Lemnos and abandon him. Years later, Odysseus and Achilles' son Neoptolemus return to Lemnos, to goad him into giving up Heracles' bow, which has been his sole possession on his island exile. His story is about damage - the damage he suffered from the snake bite, but also the damage he suffered by being exiled, severed from his community, degraded into a primitive forager dwelling in a cave, his great deeds as a hero and archer unrecognised, his social role all but annihilated. But more profoundly, his story is about healing. It is about his return to society, his reintegration into his former role, and the healing of the physical wounds that represent his deeper, innermost pain.

Some loss can never be healed. Sometimes a torn piece of paper can never be perfectly reunited, and even if it can, it will never be perfect. Sometimes Humpty Dumpty can never be put back together again. But more often than not, there is a chance for healing and restoration. Maybe not perfect restoration to the pre-trauma state, but to a 'different, new kind of normal'. There's always the hope of healing, the hope that with God's help, the threads once severed will be reunited once more. And if there's anything to being human, it is the belief in those miraculous, crazy, improbable, wonderful moments when just that happens.

Philoctetes: Farewell, thou chamber that hast shared my watches, farewell, ye nymphs of stream and meadow, and thou, deep voice of the sea-lashed cape—where, in the cavern's inmost recess, my head was often wetted by the south-wind's blasts, and where oft the Hermaean mount sent an echo to my mournful cries, in the tempest of my sorrow!

But now, O ye springs, and thou Lycian fount, I am leaving you—leaving you at last—I, who had never attained to such a hope!

Farewell, thou sea-girt Lemnos; and speed me with fair course, for my contentment, to that haven whither I am borne by mighty fate, and by the counsel of friends, and by the all-subduing god who hath brought these things to fulfilment.

Sophocles, Philoctetes
