"Sampling sanitary sewers for sulfide compounds believed to have been responsible for sending 45 children and 2 teachers to the hospital at a local high school in St. Croix. Build-up of reduced sulfur gases such as hydrogen sulfide can occur in poorly designed and poorly maintained sewer systems like the ones that plague the U.S. Virgin Islands. Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic gas that not only smells bad (rotten eggs) but can, at elevated concentrations, cause adverse health effects from skin and eye irritation to death. I often am tasked with investigating toxic chemical releases in the hopes of preventing future occurrences that can adversely impact public health and/or the environment. - Photo by David Rosoff
