This is the Air Bar at the Interncontinental Koh Samui Resort.
The resort is located on a coastal hillside in Taling Ngam on the west side of Koh Samui (Samui Island), overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. In fact, you cannot drive up to the hotel itself. You park in a lot about 500 meters below the hotel, and then are taken up in a golf cart.
The resort - and especially the bar - is known for its sunset views.
Capturing a sunset is a time sensitive task, as the sun won't wait for you. So, I wandered along the deck, looking for the best shot, when I came across the bar.
I love the silohouttes of the bar tenders and wait staff, with the sun setting in between some bottles on the far end of the bar, the sun also reflecting the green of the bottle of Tanqueray in the foreground.
If you ever find yourself on Koh Samui, I highly recommend stopping in at the Air Bar. You do not have to be a guest (we weren't - this time).

Gin by Tanqueray No 10. Not a reference to our current dire political system, but that is enough to turn anyone to drink.

From Expert Reviews:
"This very-small-batch London dry gin is citrussy, fresh and full-bodied; arguably, it’s the best martini gin around. Made from pink grapefruit, orange and lime, as well as chamomile flavours and other botanicals including coriander, angelica and liquorish, it’s named after Charles Tanqueray, who made the world’s first gin back in 1830, later creating this one which is distilled four times. It’s the only gin in the world-renowned San Francisco Spirits Hall of Fame, which tells you all you need to know about its standing in the world of spirits. A magnificent gin."

The Rangpur lime is believed to have resulted from a cross between the lemon (Citrus limon) and the mandarin or tangerine (C. reticulata). It is more cold hardy than the lemon or lime and every bit as sour as either. The tree is fast growing to 15 or 20 ft (4.5 or 6 m) tall, with spreading and somewhat drooping branches. Thorns are small and few. The very pretty flowers are tinged with purple and as fragrant as any orange blossom. The fruits are deep reddish-orange and look like mandarins (a.k.a. satsumas, tangerines), but they taste like limes. Fruits peel easily to reveal 8-10 easily separated bright orange segments with a few greenish seeds. They are quite juicy. Rangpur lime bears abundantly from November through winter, and the fruits persist on the tree in good condition.
Carne anaranjada; jugosa. Abundantes semillas, pequeñas, altamente poliembriónicas, y ligeros cotiledones verdes. La fruta cuelga en el árbol por un largo periodo.

Photo taken at home during Germany’s second hard lockdown: A bottle of Dalwhinnie Winter's Frost House Stark, part of Diageo’s Game of Thrones Single Malt Collection. Photographed in Georgensgmuend, Franconia (Bavaria)
Some background information:
Goofing around with my camera and some bottles of whisky on New Year’s Day during lockdown no. 2: I tried out different camera settings at low light and I also tried out an all-grey background. But all results weren’t to my full satisfaction. The all-grey background was too homogenous and hence, also too boring to my mind. So I tried out the bookshelf as a background.
The two photos uploaded on Flickr are probably the best results I got, but unfortunately, the colour of the whiskies in the bottles isn’t really discernable. Well, at least the labels are. I could have made the pictures brighter of course, but in that case the books in the background would have been too dominant. Well, I guess I will have to give it some more tries with different backgrounds. By the way, a black box might be fitting here, but unfortunately I have none and I am no good do-it-yourselfer as I am all thumbs.
The Game of Thrones Single Malt Collection is a limited collection of nine Single Malt Whiskies from nine different distilleries. It was released in 2019 by the British beverage alcohol concern Diageo together with the American pay television network HBO, which produced the series. The collection features seven whiskies dedicated to the Great Houses of Westeros, one whisky dedicated to the Night’s Watch and another whisky dedicated to the Six Kingdoms resp. the Three-eyed Raven.
In particular the collection includes:
• the Dalwhinnie Winter's Frost House Stark
• the Lagavulin House Lannister, nine years old
• the Cardhu Gold Reserve House Targaryen
• the Royal Lochnagar House Baratheon, twelve years old
• the Talisker Select Reserve House Greyjoy
• the Singleton of Glendullan Select House Tully
• the Clynelish Reserve House Tyrell
• the Oban Bay Reserve The Night’s Watch
• the Mortlach Six Kingdoms, fifteen years old
I have bought them all, not only because I like both the Game of Thrones series and Single Malt Whiskies, but also because it is a limited collection and I hope for an increase in value. However, if that shouldn’t happen, anyway. It would still be a nice collection with beautiful bottles and good Single Malts.
Dalwhinnie distillery is a Single Malt Whisky distillery situated in the Highland village of Dalwhinnie in Scotland. It refers to its own whisky as a Highland Single Malt Whisky, as the distillery is located a bit to the southwest of the nearby Speyside region, where the distilleries often label their whiskies Speyside Single Malt Whisky. So in fact, Dalwhinnie distillery doesn’t sit in the Highland region of Speyside, but off in the Highlands.
The site for the distillery was chosen for its access to clear spring water from Lochan-Doire-Uaine and abundant peat from the surrounding bogs. Set in splendid mountain scenery, Dalwhinnie is the highest distillery in Scotland with a visitors centre at 352 metres (1,154 feet) above sea level. The name Dalwhinnie is derived from the Gaelic word Dail Chuinnidh, which means meeting place, referring to the meeting of ancient cattle drovers' routes through the mountains.
Dalwhinnie is owned by Diageo. Diageo plc is a British multinational beverage alcohol company, with its headquarters in London. It operates in more than 180 countries and produces in more than 140 sites around the world. Until the company was overtaken by China's Kweichow Moutai in 2017, it was the world's largest distiller.
Today, Diageo is still a major producer of beer and the biggest Scotch whisky company. Currently, Diageo owns 28 Single Malt distilleries in Scotland and the sale of Scotch whisky represents 23% of the company’s total net sales. Diageo’s beverage brands include famous names like Johnny Walker, Bell’s, Bulleit, Smirnoff wodka, Captain Morgan rum, Tanqueray gin, Baileys liqueur and Guinness Irish stout beer. The company has almost 28,000 enployees and is both listed in the London Stock Exchange and in the New York Stock Exchange.
Dalwhinnie’s history dates back to the year 1897. Back then, John Grant of Grantown-on-Spey, George Sellar of Kingussie, and designer Alexander Mackenzie, also of Kingussie and already the designer of a distillery there, put up an estimated £ 10,000 to build the Strathspey Distillery at Dalwhinnie between the Great North Road and the Highland Railway.
In 1898, production began and in 1905, the distillery was bought by Cook and Bernheimer, at that time the largest distillers in the United States. In 1919, after prohibition had hit America, Dalwhinnie returned to Scottish hands. In 1934, a fire closed the distillery for four years and in 1938, Dalwhinnie reopened after having been refreshed and rebuilt.
In 1968, Dalwhinnie’s own maltings ceased production. Since then the barley is brought from specialist maltsters for greater control over peatiness and alcohol yield. In 1987, the distillery became part of United Distillers. United Distillers was a newly formed Scottish company combining the businesses of Distillers Company and Arthur Bell & Sons, both owned by Guinness.
In 1989, Dalwhinnie 15 year old has become one of the Six Classic Malts of Scotland. In 1997, Diageo was formed from the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan. As a consequence, Dalwhinnie has become an essential part of the drinks giant’s portfolio.

"Meet you downstairs in the bar and hurt
Your rolled up sleeves and your skull t-shirt
You say: What did you do with him today?
And sniffed me out like I was Tanqueray
'Cause you're my fella, my guy
Hand me your Stella and fly
By the time I'm out the door
You tear men down like Roger Moore
I cheated myself
Like I knew I would
I told you I was trouble
You know that I'm no good
Upstairs in bed with my ex-boy
He's in the place, but I can't get joy
Thinking on you in the final throes
This is when my buzzer goes
Run out to meet ya, chips and pita
You say: When we married, 'cause you're not bitter
There'll be none of him no more
I cried for you on the kitchen floor
I cheated myself
Like I knew I would
I told you I was trouble
You know that I'm no good
Sweet reunion, Jamaica and Spain
We're like how we were again
I'm in the tub, you on the seat
Lick your lips as I soap my feet
Then you notice likkle carpet burn
My stomach drop and my guts churn
You shrug, and it's the worst
Who truly stuck the knife in first?
I cheated myself

I told you I was trouble

. . for the task ahead......
..... and that is, catching up on your streams, right now (but I guess it may take me a few days).
Pleased to be home and see the kids, boy has this been a fun day! This image was shot in the bar at the Renaissance Montura, LA, en route from there to OKC last Saturday night (I really did not get too many chances for photo-ops).
Have a great week y'all.
Well they closed down the auto plant in Mahwah late that month
Ralph went out lookin' for a job but he couldn't find none
He came home too drunk from mixin' Tanqueray and wine
He got a gun shot a night clerk now they call'm Johnny 99
Down in the part of town where when you hit a red light you don't stop
Johnny's wavin' his gun around and threatenin' to blow his top
When an off duty cop snuck up on him from behind
Out in front of the Club Tip Top they slapped the cuffs on Johnny 99
Well the city supplied a public defender but the judge was Mean John Brown
He came into the courtroom and stared young Johnny down
Well the evidence is clear gonna let the sentence son fit the crime
Prison for 98 and a year and we'll call it even Johnny 99
A fistfight broke out in the courtroom they had to drag Johnny's girl away
His mama stood up and shouted "Judge don't take my boy this way"
Well son you got a statement you'd like to make
Before the bailiff comes to forever take you away
Now judge judge I had debts no honest man could pay
The bank was holdin' my mortgage and they was takin' my house away
Now I ain't sayin' that makes me an innocent man
But it was more 'n all this that put that gun in my hand
Well your honor I do believe I'd be better off dead
And if you can take a man's life for the thoughts that's in his head
Then won't you sit back in that chair and think it over judge one more time
And let 'em shave off my hair and put me on that execution line

After working in Hollywood for a number of years, Anna May Wong moved to Europe in 1928, and appeared in German and British films as well as on the London stage. This beautiful image is from that period. Recto: Signed "To Alee Rose, With every good wish Anna May Wong," with Chinese characters below. "Paul Tanqueray, London" printed in the lower left corner.
FIRST ASIAN AMERICAN STAR!
Written by PHILIP LEIBFRIED
Her complexion was described as "a rose blushing through old ivory;" she was beautiful, tall (5'7"), slender, and Chinese-American. The last fact kept her from attaining the highest echelon among Hollywood's pantheon of stars, but it did not affect her popularity, nor keep her from becoming a household name. She was Anna May Wong, nee Wong Liu Tsong, a name which translates to "Frosted Yellow Willows," and she was born, appropriately enough, on Flower Street in Los Angeles' Chinatown on 3 January 1905, above her father's laundry. Anna May Wong's contribution to show business is a unique one; she was the first Asian female to become a star, achieving that stardom at a time when bias against her race was crushing. With determination and talent allied to her exotic beauty, she remained the only Asian female star throughout her forty-year career, never fully overcoming all prejudices in maintaining that position. Perhaps the rediscovery of her art will elevate her star to the pantheon of great performers and serve as a guiding light to Asian performers who still struggle to find their rightful place. Anna May Wong's life and career is something that is important for all who value greatly the Asian / Asian Pacific American communities' many artists and what we can all contribute!
Excerpt from : That Old Feeling: Anna May Wong
Part II of Richard Corliss' tribute to the pioneer Chinese-American star.
Daughter of the Dragon. Paramount 1931.
Based on a Fu Manchu novel by Sax Rohmer.
Daughter of the Dragon extended the curse sworn by Dr. Fu on the Petrie family to the next generation. Fu Manchu (Warner Oland), long ago injured and exiled in an attempt on Petrie Sr., returns to London and confronts the father: "In the 20 years I have fought to live," he says in his florid maleficence, "the thought of killing you and your son has been my dearest nurse." He kills the father, is mortally wounded himself and, on his deathbed, reveals his identity to his daughter Ling Moy (Wong) and elicits her vow that she will "cancel the debt" to the Fu family honor and murder the son, Ronald (Bramwell Fletcher)... who, dash it all, is madly infatuated with Ling Moy. Ronald has seen "Princess Ling Moy Celebrated Oriental Dancer" perform, and the vision has made him woozy. "I wish I could find a word to describe her," this calf-man effuses. "Exotic that's the word! And she's intriguing, if you know what I mean." In a near-clinch, Ling Moy wonders if a Chinese woman can appeal to a British toff. When he begs her to "chuck everything and stay," she asks him, "If I stayed, would my hair ever become golden curls, and my skin ivory, like Ronald's?" But the lure of the exotic is hard to shake. "Strange," he says, "I prefer yours. I shall never forget your hair and your eyes." They almost kiss ... when an off-camera scream shakes him out of his dream. It is from his girlfriend Joan (Frances Dade), and the societal message is as clear and shrill: white woman alerting white man to treachery of yellow woman. Ling Moy, a nice girl, previously unaware of her lineage, might be expected to struggle, at least briefly, with the shock of her identity and the dreadful deed her father obliges her to perform. But Wong makes an instant transformation, hissing, "The blood is mine. The hatred is mine. The vengeance shall be mine." Just before his death, Fu mourns that he has no son to kill Ronald. But, in a good full-throated reading, Wong vows: "Father, father, I will be your son. I will be your son!" The audience then has the fun of watching her stoke Ronald's ardor while plotting his death. When she is with him, pleading and salesmanship radiate from her bigeyes. But when an ally asks her why she keeps encouraging the lad, she sneers and says, "I am giving him a beautiful illusion. Which I shall crush." As a villainess, she is just getting started. Revealing her mission to Ronald, she tells him she plans to kill Joan "Because you must have a thousand bitter tastes of death before you die." (The ripe dialogue is by Hollywood neophyte Sidney Buchman, whose distinguished list of credits would include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Here Comes Mr Jordan and The Talk of the Town.) She soon ascends on a geyser of madness as she decides on a new torture: "My vengeance is inspired tonight. You will first have the torture of seeing her beauty eaten slowly away by this hungry acid." An aide holds a hose gadget over Joan's soon-to-be-corroded face, and Ronald cries for Ling Moy to stop. Very well she says. "Ling Moy is merciful." She barks at Ronald: "Kill her!" He must decide if his favorite white girl is to be etched with acid or stabbed to death. Great stuff! Melodrama is the art of knowing how precisely too far to goThe film is a triangle: not so much of Ling Moy, Ronald and Joan as of Ling Moy, Ronald and a Chinese detective, Ah Kee, played by Sessue Hayakawa, the Japanese actor who in the teens was Hollywood's first Asian male star. He's not plausibly Chinese here, and he is in a constant, losing battle with spoken English. But he is a part of movie history, in the only studio film of the Golden Age to star two ethnically Asian actors. And he gives his emotive all to such lines as "It is the triumph of irony that the only woman I have ever deeply loved should be born of the blood that I loathe." And in the inevitable double-death finale neither the villainess nor the noble detective can survive the machinations of Hollywood justice he gently caresses the long hair of the lady he would love to have loved. "Flower Ling Moy," he says, a moment before expiring. "A flower need not love, but only be loved. As Ah Kee loved you."
The Personal Anna May Wong
This 5'7 beauty loved to study and could speak in an English accent, as well as being fluent in German and French with more than a passing knowledge of other tongues including Italian and Yiddish. For exercise she rode horses, played golf, and tennis. She liked to cook and regaled her guests with succulent Chinese dishes at frequent dinner parties. She preferred casual clothes, wearing slacks and sweaters at home, but cultivated an oriental motif in her very smart formal wardrobe. She studied singing with Welsh tenor Parry Jones before she participated in the film Limehouse Blues as George Raft's mistress. Anna loved to dance to contemporary music. Anna was quoted as saying, "I think I got my first chance because they thought I was peculiar. But, now I like to believe that the public are fond of me because they think I'm nice."
The story of Anna May Wong’s life traced the arc of triumph and tragedy that marked so many of her films. Wong's youthful ambition and screen appeal got her farther than anyone else of her race. But her race, or rather Hollywood's and America's fear of giving Chinese and other non-whites the same chance as European Americans, kept her from reaching the Golden Mountaintop. We can be startled and impressed by the success she, alone, attained. And still weask: Who knows what Anna May Wong could have been allowed to achieve if she
had been Anna May White?
Anna May Wong passed away on Feb. 3rd 1961 she was 56 years old.

Cameronbridge is the largest grain distillery in Europe and can also lay claim to be the oldest, having been established in 1824 by John Haig. In 1865 Haig joined in an alliance with eight other grain distillers and in 1877 this was formalised into the Distillers Company Limited [DCL]. DCL would, in time and after many mergers, evolve into Diageo. Cameronbridge produced both grain and malt whisky using a combination of pot stills and column stills until 1929, when it shifted exclusively to grain whisky production. In 1989 Cameronbridge changed from being solely a large-scale grain whisky distillery into a ‘dual-purpose’ site, when United Distillers' Grain Neutral Spirit operation was transferred to Fife from Wandsworth in London. Now GNS for white spirits and ‘sweetened products’ such as Archers, Pimm's, Smirnoff, Tanqueray and Gordon's Gin are also produced alongside grain spirit used in the Johnnie Walker, J&B, Bell's, Black & White, Vat 69, Haig and White Horseblended whisky brands owned by Diageo.
Gin is more popular now than it has been for several decades.
I suppose the Parrot signified something exotic, wild, colourful and desirable? It makes for a nice advert anyway.
