Just trying out some outfits on Portobello and Tanith today. :)

Tanith Lee. DAW #184, 1979 printing.

Cover by Enrich.

I love this. When Katherine saw it she said that it looked like a still from an upcoming gritty teen drama (BBC). I think she's absolutely right!

The light on this is being diffused through a frosted plastic window in the ceiling of a gutted old building in Newcastle. We had walked to a dead end and when I turned, I saw the light on her, the doorway framing her and it was just perfect.

I am very happy with this picture. Very happy indeed.

There's more about this shoot (and another picture) on the blog.

Since Tanith's looked so good I thought I'd do some of me :)

I have been trying to capture a suitable self portrait for my website. This isn't it, but I suppose I like it enough to put it here at any rate. I was going for a low key/high contrast Bill Brandt feel but I kind of missed the mark a bit.

Nevertheless this is a bit different to my usual style. This was also my fist test with my remote trigger, and that makes self portraiture a whole load easier let me tell you!

I'd be interested to receive any critiques/comments.

This reminds me of Beauty and the Beast, I think because of my hair. I don't know. Haha.

Anyways, I was tagged, so I'll tell you 10 things about me. :]

1. This summer I'm going to disneyworld, the harry potter theme park, leakycon, vidcon, and disneyland, all in about the same month.

2. With that being said, I'm a huge nerd.

3. I'm horrible at beating video games, but i'm pro at starting them.

4. Anything nautical makes me happy.

5. I'm craving more tattoos.

6. I lose everything. I've lost two memory cards already.

7. I'm currently reading three books: Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, White as Snow by Tanith Lee, and Life Without Limits by Nick Vujicic. I recommend them all.

8. I'm nervous for school to start, Mondays and Wednesdays i'll be in school from 9am to 7pm.

9. My pictures are going to suffer, I can tell.

10. I'm in a phase lately where I need to be listening to music as much as possible. Nothing can quench my musical thirst. :P

If I tagged you then you are either a daily inspiration of mine, or a new one. :]

And I know there's more. I'm just forgetful. >.<

This place was one of the three main highlights of my travels around Asia. We hiked up to the top of Bokor Hill being snared by bees, vicious plants (I have scars, seriously!), blood sucking leeches and other things besides. In addition to this when we reached the top we couldn't explore straight away because it was dusk and we therefore had to avoid the tigers. The next day... my god it was worth it!

The opportunity to explore such a fantastic place before it is destroyed by the Chinese - Sokimex want to re-vamp the place rather than leave it in all its glory - should be taken by anyone who has the opportunity and the strength to climb over 3000 feet in 100 degree heat and 100% humidity.

Picture taken on Bokor Hill near Kampot in Cambodia which is famous for being the setting of the Korean horror movie R-Point as well as City of Ghosts.

An attempt at a son of Sek.

Each one of the enemy warriors was massive. Their upper bodies, shoulders and arms were thick with muscle, making them look slightly comical and top heavy. There was nothing comical about the speed or determination with which they were advancing. The bright yellow hue of their battledress contrasted, with an aposematic punch, against the gloss black of their body armor.

Emblems of Ruin were welded to their chest plates, and long strings of beads and amulets rattled around them. Their heads were shaved and bare, and stained or dressed with white pigment over which delicate black designs had been inscribed across the cranium and brow. Their body armor rose up onto a broad neck guard which concealed their mouths behind a lip fashioned from black iron to resemble a cupping hand, as if they each had a hand placed over their mouths....these were the Sons of Sek.

I may give him bare arms and put some designs on his head.

I'm currently engaged in an extremely nerdy project to make Lego models of the Tanith First and Only from Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series. Yeah, this is gonna end well ;)

Tanith (right) was my birthday dolly, and she has a tale to tell!

She was first sent out from USA in January, but was lost for several months without trace. Suddenly in July she arrived back with the sender without any obvious reason for the delay, so she was shipped out again a few weeks ago.

However, again she disappeared within the USPS system, only to be returned to the sender once again following a glitch.

So, third time lucky! She was shipped along with Portobello via FedEx, and they arrived here a just few days later!

The Postcard

A postcard that was photographed and published by Tilley & Son of Ledbury. They state on the back of the card that it is an

entirely British production.

The card was posted in Malvern on Friday the 19th. September 1947 to:

Miss Webber,

50, Roxeth Hill,

Harrow,

Middlesex.

The pencilled message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"c/o Mrs. Erskine,

School House,

Malvern College,

Malvern.

Dear Miss Webber,

Just a few lines hoping

they will find you quite

well.

Thank you very much

for the magazine. Will

you let me know how

much I owe you then I

will send it on.

This is the back part of

the college".

Malvern College

Malvern College is an independent co-educational day and boarding school in Malvern, Worcestershire. It is a public school in the British sense of the term, and is a member of the Rugby Group and of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference.

Since its foundation in 1865, it has remained on the same grounds, which are located near the town centre of Great Malvern. The campus, now covering some 250 acres (101 ha), is near the Malvern Hills.

There are currently about 650 pupils enrolled at the school, aged between 13 and 19. Additionally, there are about 310 pupils aged from 3 to 13 at The Downs, Malvern College prep school, in nearby Colwall in Herefordshire.

Among the alumni of the college are at least two Commonwealth prime ministers, two Nobel laureates, an Olympic gold medalist, and many other notable persons from various fields. The novelist C. S. Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia, was a pupil of the school.

The college has five overseas campuses, Malvern College Qingdao, and Malvern College Chengdu, both in China, Malvern College Egypt in Cairo, Malvern College Hong Kong, and Malvern College Switzerland in Leysin.

The Malvern College War Memorial

Near the steps is the college war memorial. It features a statue of St. George, and is inscribed 'To Our Brothers'.

The memorial was unveiled on the 8th. July 1922 in the presence of Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdee. It is protected and listed on the National Heritage List for England maintained by Historic England.

The memorial commemorates the 462 individuals who attended Malvern College and who died due to the Great War. Altogether 2,833 are known to have served during the conflict.

There was not a month from August 1914 to November 1918 when an Old Malvernian did not become a casualty, with 6 being killed on the first day of the Battle of Loos on the 25th. September 1915, and 13 being killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on the 1st. July 1916.

The vast majority of casualties occurred in France and Belgium, with 31 names recorded on the Menin Gate at Ypres, and 23 at Thiepval. There were also 23 casualties in Turkey due to the Gallipoli Campaign, and 16 in Iraq, including 2 near Kut.

They were in a wide range of regiments including 26 in the Royal Field Artillery, 13 in the Royal Engineers, 12 in the Worcestershire Regt, 11 in the Canadian Inf., 11 in the East Kent Regt. (The Buffs), and 5 in the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force.

Most were officers, with 133 Captains, 126 2nd. Lieutenants, 114 Lieutenants, 26 Majors, and 15 Lieutenant Colonels.

29 received the MC, 10 the DSO and 1 the DCM, as well as 3 knighthoods.

A Meeting in Atlantic City

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, on the 19th. September 1947, the National Association of Broadcasters meeting in Atlantic City adopted a code which reduced broadcast advertising, banned dramatic presentation of "controversial issues", and set standards for the treatment of certain topics including race, religion and marriage.

Tanith Lee

The day also marked the birth in London, England of the science fiction, horror and fantasy author Tanith Lee. Tanith died in 2015.

Ray Cooper

Another birth on the 19th. September 1947 was that of Raymond 'Ray' Cooper. Ray, who was born in Watford, Hertfordshire is currently (2021) 74 years of age.

He is a session and road-tour percussionist, and occasional actor, who has worked with numerous musically diverse bands and artists including George Harrison, Billy Joel, Rick Wakeman, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd and Elton John.

Incorporation of unusual instruments (for rock drummers of the time) such as cowbells, glockenspiel and tubular bells, along with several standard kit elements, helped create a highly varied setup.

Continually modified to this day, Cooper's percussion set offers a large array of percussion instruments for sonic diversity such as the tambourine, congas, crash cymbals, rototoms, gongs, snare drum and timpani.

Ray Cooper's Musical Career

In addition to percussion, Cooper studied classical piano, strings and woodwind, as well as theatre. He joined the band Blue Mink, and as a session musician, he played on records for artists such as America, Carly Simon and David Essex.

He played on and co-produced the album Somewhere in England by former Beatle George Harrison in 1981.

Ray Cooper has long been associated with Elton John's career, playing on more than 90 recordings, and performing in more than 800 concerts with Elton, both as a duo and in various band configurations.

His first appearance with Elton John was during the sessions for Madman Across the Water, and he played his first live show with him in early 1972.

Cooper had a short stint with The Rolling Stones, playing percussion for their 1974 It's Only Rock 'n Roll album. After contributing to various Elton John albums, Cooper joined the Elton John Band full-time in 1974, and spent the next two years recording and touring with the group.

During Elton John's semi-retirement in the late 1970's, Cooper played on various singles and albums for John, and recorded with George Harrison, the Kinks, Wings and Art Garfunkel. In 1977 and again in 1979, Cooper toured with Elton John as a duo in which Elton would play a solo set and then be joined by Cooper on percussion for the second half of the concerts.

Cooper's relationship with the Rolling Stones continued into the 1980's. In 1981, he contributed to Bill Wyman's third solo album. In 1983, he participated in a short tour for the Ronnie Lane ARMS Charity Concert along with Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and other artists, including Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts.

In the 1980's, Cooper continued to record and tour periodically with Elton John. In 1986, he joined Elton's touring band for the Tour De Force concerts in Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, augmenting Jody Linscott, who was the band's percussionist on the rest of Elton John's world tour.

Cooper showed up on Christine McVie's self-titled solo album in 1984. In 1985, he appeared on both Mick Jagger's She's the Boss album and Bill Wyman's Willie & The Poor Boys. Also in 1985, Cooper performed as percussionist for a number of artists during the charity event Live Aid. In 1997, he guested with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings for Struttin' Our Stuff.

In every tour during 1990, Eric Clapton and the band played "Sunshine of Your Love", which then flowed into a short one-minute drum solo by Steve Ferrone (drummer for Clapton's band on the tour), then into a seven-minute percussion solo by Cooper on the tambourine, congas and gong.

On the 16th. January 1992, Ray played percussion for Clapton's instalment of the MTV Unplugged television series.

During 1994 and 1995 Face to Face tours with Billy Joel, and during Elton John's tours in 1995, Elton John played "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", which then flowed into a solo by Cooper on percussion.

In the 1995 "Evening With Elton John and Ray Cooper" tour, the two men performed in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Costa Rica. On the 15th. September 1997, Cooper was the principal percussionist along with Phil Collins at the Music for Montserrat fund raiser concert in Royal Albert Hall.

Cooper was also part of the band at the Concert for George, the memorial concert for George Harrison, held at the Royal Albert Hall in 2002. He also contributed to the tribute concert for Jim Capaldi in January 2007, and worked on Katie Melua's album Pictures in 2007.

Ray Cooper's Film Work

Towards the end of the 1980,s, Cooper became involved in film as a musician, actor and producer. His work in film production included work for HandMade Films, which was owned by his friend George Harrison.

Cooper has played small roles such as the preacher in Robert Altman's feature film Popeye (1980), starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall.

He has performed music in several of Terry Gilliam's productions, appearing on-screen in quirky roles like the technician who swats the beetle at the beginning of Gilliam's 1985 film Brazil, and as the functionary whispering in the ear of Jonathan Pryce's Right Ordinary Horatio Jackson character in 1989's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

He appeared in the Concert for Cascara in the 1985 film Water, and appears as a street commercial for The Zero Theorem.

Ray Cooper's Recent Work

Ray Cooper has continued recording and performing with Elton John on various albums and tours, including Elton's The Million Dollar Piano show in Las Vegas.

In 2009, John and Cooper performed a small exclusive series of shows, mostly in the UK and Europe, the first time since 1995 that the two had toured together without a band. Amongst their performances was one at the Royal Albert Hall to raise funds for a new organ which the Royal Academy of Music would assemble in their Duke's Hall.

They raised further funds with a further performance at the Royal Opera House in 2011. The organ has been named the Sir Elton John and Ray Cooper Organ, and was heard for the first time on the 7th. October 2013.

In a greeting to Cooper on his 70th. birthday, John's website stated that when Elton composed the song "Tambourine" for his 2016 Wonderful Crazy Night album, he made sure to bring in Cooper to play the instrument on the track. In June 2019, Cooper toured with Elton John as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road farewell tour.

Instruments Played by Ray Cooper

Cooper is known to have played tambourine, congas, maracas, bongos, cymbals, wind chimes, bell tree, triangle, timpani, bells, tubular bells, shaker, vibraphone, marimba, gong, Rototoms, jaw bone, cowbell, finger cymbals, timbales, crotales, güiro, glockenspiel, whistle, drum kit, snare drum, keyboards, piano, and guitar.

I think fruit bats must be so-called because when they are hanging from the trees in their large numbers they look like fruit from a distance. Noisy fruit.

I took many pictures of these little/huge guys but this was my favourite because he is looking straight at me. He's also very cute. And fluffy.

Today was my first 'Cherish the Dress' shoot, which is a nicer and much more English version of the original American Trash the Dress shoots.

Aside from a tiny bit of photoshopping to ease out a couple of fine lines on Kerry's forehead there is no other editing done on this picture. I'm very pleased with it and hope to have some more edits done soon.

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,

Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,

Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs

And towards our distant rest began to trudge.

Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots

But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;

Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots

Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,

Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;

But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,

And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .

Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,

As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,

He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace

Behind the wagon that we flung him in,

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,

His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est

Pro patria mori.

Through its unique programming, FSH empowers young girls by combining educational, artistic, and fitness opportunities through the discipline of skating. As always, the proceeds from this year’s gala are vital. FSH is constantly growing to meet the needs of the girls it serves and has set its sights on expanding to a new Leading Edge Skating and Education Center of their own.
