A Canterbury Tale - Dreadzone
There are more ways than one of getting close to your ancestors.
Follow the old road, and as you walk, think of them and of the old England.
You’re only seeing what their eye saw. Ford the same rivers.
The same birds are singing.
When you lie flat on your back and rest, and watch the clouds sailing, as I often do, you're so close to those other people, that you can hear the thrumming of the hoofs of their horses, and the sound of the wheels on the road, and their laughter and talk, and the music of the instruments they carried.
The red rose cries, She is near
And the white rose weeps, She is late
The larkspur listens, I hear
And the lily whispers, I wait
The red rose cries, She is near
And the white rose weeps, She is late
The larkspur listens, I hear
And the lily whispers, I wait
What I’d give to grow old in a place like this….
On my recent journey to Sweden I found myself in the solitary footsteps of Swedish artist, John Bauer. My attempt was to find the places that are illustrated in his imagery and document them. As I was walking through the deep parts of the forest, among the mysterious and magical places I discovered a landscape that belonged to another world, one of serenity, quiet and beauty.

On the way to Leh. Ladakh
In the past Ladakh gained importance from its strategic location at the crossroads of important trade routes, but since the Chinese authorities closed the borders with Tibet and Central Asia in the 1960s, international trade has dwindled except for tourism. Since 1974, the Government of India has successfully encouraged tourism in Ladakh. Since Ladakh is a part of the Kashmir dispute, the Indian military maintains a strong presence in the region.
The largest town in Ladakh is Leh. A majority of Ladakhis are Tibetan Buddhists and the rest are mostly Shia Muslims. Some Ladakhi activists have in recent times called for Ladakh to be constituted as a union territory because of its religious and cultural differences with predominantly Muslim Kashmir.
Contemporary Ladakh borders Tibet to the east, the Lahaul and Spiti to the south, the Vale of Kashmir, Jammu and Baltiyul regions to the west, and the trans–Kunlun territory of East Turkistan to the far north. Ladakh is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture. It is sometimes called "Little Tibet" as it has been strongly influenced by Tibetan culture.

Tibetan prayer wheels (called Mani wheels by the Tibetans) are devices for spreading spiritual blessings and well being. Rolls of thin paper, imprinted with many, many copies of the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, printed in an ancient Indian script or in Tibetan script, are wound around an axle in a protective container, and spun around and around. Typically, larger decorative versions of the syllables of the mantra are also carved on the outside cover of the wheel.
Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying this mantra, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion.
My moc tells the story of Rumpelstiltskin from Grimm's fairy tale. In the upper chamber you can see the miller's daughter in front of the spinning wheel. Surrounded by straw and gold.
At the bottom left you can see Rumpelstiltskin dancing around the fire.
My moc was part of the "Rogue Bricks" community display at the 12th Berlin Steinewahn exhibition in October 2023. Each book there told its own fairy tale.
Some spots in Central Park can look like they're straight from a fairy tale. Gapstow Bridge is definitely one of those spots.
You must wonder, why winter tale? Because this picture, like every other picture out there has a story to tell. Maybe some of you just shoot, whithout looking to say something through the image you capture, but for some of us, with a greather imagination, when we press the trigger we try to capture a feeling, a mood, a senzation.
Now, imagine that the road behind the fence can lead anywhere you whish to, you just have to dare to follow it. And, as the white color simbolizes "a new beggining", I think we should try. What do you say?!
Enjoy the ride!
