This tablet is in memory of Sir Hugh Willoughby, Stephen Borough, William Borough, Sir Martin Frobisher and other navigators who, in the latter half of the sixteenth century, set sail from this reach of the River Thames near Ratcliff Cross to explore the Nothern seas.

St Mary's at Fownhope is renowned for it's Romanesque features; although most of the body of the church is the result of 13th & 14th century remodelling and enlargement the Norman central tower remains complete (and crowned by a shingled broach spire).
The most important Norman element however is the beautiful carved tympanum, now kept inside mounted at the west end of the nave. The subject is the Virgin & Child, shown frontally surrounded by the characteristic swirling foliage favoured by Romanesque artists, within which an eagle and a large and fierce looking winged lion are seen (two of the evangelists' symbols?). It is a fine example of the renowned Herefordshire School of carvers active in the 12th century, and was exhibited in London in 1984 where I first saw it.
The church's interior otherwise has some (non-figurative) fragments of 14th century glass reset in its east window and a collection of 17th century memorial tablets in the south aisle.

a tablet experiment to enhance the rough texture of the bricks. not entirely satisfying but i ran out of patience with it.

Description of work: Located between the Vistula River and the Warsaw Escarpment on a culturally and ecologically significant site, the library's design is based on a "city in the woods" concept and was the winning entry of the 1993 design competition for the building. The library is built within the existing topography of the landscape (two levels below grade and two levels above grade) and is constructed of reinforced concrete, steel, glass, and pre-patinated copper. The building's 5,000 square meter green roof is watered by a stormwater irrigation system and contains four thematic gardens, each of which is surrounded by massive skylights and connected by steel bridges. The roof gardens provide expansive views of the city and are integrated into the adjacent University Public Garden by grand staircases and linear water channels. "The library's interior is divided both functionally and physically by a glass enclosed street arcade, which serves to separate and connect the library stacks andleased commercial space.The copper facade along Dobra Street displays eight [4x7 meter] copper tablets containing six different alphabets, mathematical and chemical equations and musical and literary concepts."
