Trans*plant: May the Chlorophyll be with /in you / Quimera Rosa (ES/AR/FR) by Ars Electronica

“Trans*Plant: May the Chlorophyll be with/in you” is a mix-media installation project, that aims to present the work behind the Trans*Plant project, initiated three years ago, it combines biomedical research, performance and speculative fiction. It is a piece based on haptic and hybrid low-technologies, where leftovers from the past and the future get entangled. Videos, written narratives, scientific excerpts, mycorrhiza interacting with the audience, and DIY/DIWO biotechnological materials are part of the elements that establish the connection between the theme and the transdisciplinary and experimental form of this lab installation.

Die internationale Tagung Be.Bop 2012 beschäftigt sich mit Black European citizenship (Schwarzer europäischer Staatsbürgerschaft) und betrachtet Beispiele aktueller Praxis aus den Bereichen moving-image und performance. Die Hierarchisierung der menschlichen Existenz nach "Rassen", deren Grundlagen in der Renaissance gelegt und im Zuge der Aufklärung gesetzlich festgeschrieben wurden, hat die heute in Europa vorherrschenden (weiß–männlich–heteronormativ–christlich–westlichen) Vorstellungen davon etabliert, wer als Mensch gilt und wer auf einer niedrigeren Stufe dieser Hierarchie steht. Dekoloniale Theorien decken auf, wie solche Vorstellungen von citizenship (Staatsbürgerschaft/Staatsangehörigkeit) mit Rassifizierungen verbunden sind. Tagungssprache ist Englisch.

  

This international screening program and transdisciplinary roundtable is centered on Black European citizenship in connection to recent moving image and performative practices. The framework of this meeting is circumscribed within decolonial theories which expose how the idea of citizenship is linked to current racializing configurations and hence with the limits of humanity. In that sense, the racial hierarchy of human existence, originating in the Renaissance and prescribed legally during the Enlightenment, established current (white-male-heteronormative-Christian-Western) European notions of who is Human and who is lower in that hierarchy, thereby designating citizenship, one of the most important legacies of modernity. The time-based positions discussed at this meeting have been selected because they contest (racializing) fantasies on European citizenship. This meeting is motivated and theoretically embedded to Decolonial Aesthetics and more specifically to Decolonial Diasporic Aesthetics, a term coined by curator, Alanna Lockward. In the spirit of the transformative and liberating qualities of performance art, this event is free and open to the public. The meeting is held in English.

Elizabeth, daughter of prime Minister Herbert Asquith, Earl of Oxford married prince Antoine Bibesco, a Romanian diplomat in London and friend of Marcel proust who was their daughter's godfather and who said about Elizabeth at her wedding: "Miss Asquith, who was probably unsurpassed in intelligence by any of her contemporaries ... looked like a lovely figure in an Italian fresco."

Asked about PM Asquith about the extent of his estates in Romania, the future son-in-law was reputed to have answered; "It takes the Orient Express one day to go through me."

Elizabeth Bibesco's writings include some great aphorisms such as: “Irony is the hygiene of the mind.”

Renaissance is an exhibition of audio-visual installations produced in collaboration by the duo of digital artists from the Robert Turner Collective and the electroacoustic jazz music duo INFLUUT. Works of algorithmic abstraction offer a synesthetic immersion, inviting introspection and meditation.

 

Each day presents an event for which the invited artists, scientists or collectives propose an intervention that resonates with the themes of the exhibition. Performances, conferences, installations, and a festival of nights with sound punctuate the Renaissance complex.

 

Transdisciplinary in nature, this exhibition aims to provide a sort of demystification of the general notion of the algorithm. She deals in a sometimes didactic, sometimes playful, sometimes organic way with themes that may still be difficult to access with a positive and inclusive attitude.

Co-commissioned with LifeSpace Science Art Research Gallery, this exhibition considers the protocols for propagation of genetically modified plants as memorials. The speculative design project fuses biotechnology with botany, and employs University collections and research to re-tell stories of scientific discovery and genetic inheritance.

 

Spirit Molecule I is support by University of Dundee’s Botanic Garden and Science Center, Philadelphia USA.

 

About the Artists

Heather Dewey-Hagborg is a transdisciplinary artist and educator who is interested in art as research and critical practice. Her controversial biopolitical art practice includes the project Stranger Visions in which she created portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material (hair, cigarette butts, chewed up gum) collected in public places.

 

Heather has shown work internationally at events and venues including the World Economic Forum, the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennale, the Van Abbemuseum, Transmediale and PS1 MOMA. Her work is held in public collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the New York Historical Society, among others, and has been widely discussed in the media, from the New York Times and the BBC to Art Forum and Wired.

 

Heather has a PhD in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is an artist fellow at AI Now, and an affiliate of Data & Society.

 

She is also a co-founder and co-curator of REFRESH, an inclusive and politically engaged collaborative platform at the intersection of Art, Science, and Technology.

 

Phillip Andrew Lewis is an artist working in a variety of media including photography, video, objects and sound. His creative research often responds to historical events, psychology, and phenomenology. This work consistently examines duration, perceptual limits and attentive observation. Lewis is actively involved in collaboration with artists and various groups.

 

Phillip has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally. He received a 2012 Creative Capital Grant in Visual Art for his ongoing long-term project entitled SYNONYM. He has also received generous support for his research from the Headlands Center for the Arts, Culture and Animals Foundation, Center for Creative Photography, Foundation for Contemporary Art in New York, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Midway Contemporary Arts Fund, Tennessee Arts Commission, University of Tennessee, and the Urban Arts Commission. In 2005, Phillip co-founded Medicine Factory, an independent arts organization in downtown Memphis committed to supporting installation-based works. He currently teaches at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.

Die internationale Tagung Be.Bop 2012 beschäftigt sich mit Black European citizenship (Schwarzer europäischer Staatsbürgerschaft) und betrachtet Beispiele aktueller Praxis aus den Bereichen moving-image und performance. Die Hierarchisierung der menschlichen Existenz nach "Rassen", deren Grundlagen in der Renaissance gelegt und im Zuge der Aufklärung gesetzlich festgeschrieben wurden, hat die heute in Europa vorherrschenden (weiß–männlich–heteronormativ–christlich–westlichen) Vorstellungen davon etabliert, wer als Mensch gilt und wer auf einer niedrigeren Stufe dieser Hierarchie steht. Dekoloniale Theorien decken auf, wie solche Vorstellungen von citizenship (Staatsbürgerschaft/Staatsangehörigkeit) mit Rassifizierungen verbunden sind. Tagungssprache ist Englisch.

  

This international screening program and transdisciplinary roundtable is centered on Black European citizenship in connection to recent moving image and performative practices. The framework of this meeting is circumscribed within decolonial theories which expose how the idea of citizenship is linked to current racializing configurations and hence with the limits of humanity. In that sense, the racial hierarchy of human existence, originating in the Renaissance and prescribed legally during the Enlightenment, established current (white-male-heteronormative-Christian-Western) European notions of who is Human and who is lower in that hierarchy, thereby designating citizenship, one of the most important legacies of modernity. The time-based positions discussed at this meeting have been selected because they contest (racializing) fantasies on European citizenship. This meeting is motivated and theoretically embedded to Decolonial Aesthetics and more specifically to Decolonial Diasporic Aesthetics, a term coined by curator, Alanna Lockward. In the spirit of the transformative and liberating qualities of performance art, this event is free and open to the public. The meeting is held in English.

Fashion and Circular Economy Symposium by College of Health and Human Sciences

The 2023 Fashion and Circular Economy symposium brought scholars and practitioners together to explore topics that drive forward an inclusive circular economy agenda related to the fashion industry. Hosted in the Nancy Richardson Design Center, the event was an exciting and creative platform to design transdisciplinary approaches that facilitate developing a robust teaching, research and engagement agenda focused on Circular Economy and sustainability.

The short movie shows different scales of the human body, from digitized microscopic lymphoma tissue examined with the molecular cytogenetic technique Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect abnormal changes in DNA, to 3-D reconstructions of a liver as well as a whole-body MRI. At a simultaneous launch at Ars Electronica’s Festival and Media Art Nexus NTU Singapore, we will talk with Ina Conradi and Mark Chavez in a live video call about how art can contribute not only artistry and a sense of awe to removing barriers for engagement with severe health topics, but also as a transdisciplinary approach to innovation in digital medicine. The movie marks the beginning of the cooperation of Media Art Nexus NTU Singapore and Fraunhofer MEVIS, which will provide techniques, tools, scientific expertise and an educational environment for students from NTU Singapore in Bremen, Germany.

Bioretention Gardens in Detroit by University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability

On May 18, 2016, Garden project partners, community leaders, neighborhood residents, and local students celebrated the transformation of vacant lots to gardens specially designed to capture and soak up the rain and beautify neighborhoods in Detroit Michigan.

 

A University of Michigan Water Center research team collaborated with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD), the Detroit Land Bank Authority (DLBA), and Cody Rouge neighborhood organizations to create an innovative form of green infrastructure (GI) for vacant properties in Detroit.

The Award of Excellence is the Society’s highest award for scientific achievement. It recognizes original and outstanding scientific contributions in the fields of fisheries and aquatic biology. Today we recognize Dr. Scott Hinch.

 

Dr. Hinch is an outstanding leader, who has conducted and inspired innovative and groundbreaking science, much of which has strong application and relevance to fisheries management. Nearly all of his research has been conducted in British Columbia but has influenced scientists around the globe. He is a professor and leader of the Pacific Salmon Ecology and Conservation Laboratory at the University of British Columbia. He is a world-renowned expert in salmon ecology with a transdisciplinary research program linking ecology, behaviour, physiology, genomics, and the social sciences. He also serves as the Pacific Ocean lead investigator for Canada’s Ocean Tracking Network. As an outstanding mentor, Dr. Hinch has trained many students and post docs who have gone on themselves to become influential members of the aquatic science and management communities.

捷克共和國最重要的博物美術館：Národní Museum國家美術館的策展人Pavlína Vogelová確定於今年九月來台策畫展覽。由於近年來非常廟藝文空間在國際交流上的努力耕耘，成果受到國際藝術圈的關注與肯定，此次榮幸獲得與歐洲國家級美術館策展人的合作機會，於VT展出重量級藝術家Milena Dopitová的個展【My Body is a Temple】以及暢銷音樂家Peter Wagner的表演。

 

Milena Dopitová是捷克境內最受國際認可的當代藝術家之一。Art in America雜誌中由藝評家David Ebony撰寫的文章曾評論Dopitová的創作“深沉而且動人！”她曾獲在紐約、捷克獲得Pollock-Krasner、Tranzit、Michal Ranny等獎項，作品獲邀參加多次威尼斯雙年展，並於英國、愛爾蘭、荷蘭、捷克、芬蘭、波蘭、斯洛伐克、巴西、奧地利、瑞典、德國、美國、法國、義大利、葡萄牙等地展出。她的作品更得到布魯克林美術館、卡內基美術館、布拉格市立藝廊、布拉格國家藝廊、奧地利銀行藝術基金會等機構的典藏。除了藝術創作，Dopitová也是一位優秀的藝術教育者，她曾在皮爾森的西波西米亞藝術學院、布拉格的材料學院任教，目前則受聘於布拉格藝術學院，擔任系主任的職位。

 

Petr Wagner是一位以獨奏聞名的古典音樂家，曾受邀於捷克、義大利、法國、墨西哥、以色列、日本等地的大型藝術節表演。Wagner也長期與BBC合作，錄製的音樂出現在各大廣播、電視節目以及近40張CD裡，目前幾乎每年固定發行一張唱片活耀於市場上，是國際音樂界公認的才子。此次Dopitová與Wagner將難得地在展覽中的跨界合作，在捷克國家美術館策展人的策劃下，藝術家展出攝影、裝置以及錄像作品；音樂家以音樂介入視覺影像，以取代文字敘述的聲音，將那些日常生活中外在於個人的肢體動作、表情、聲音與內在的思想、靈魂共譜成抽象的藝術音調。

Pavlína Vogelová, curator of the most important museum of the Czech Republic¬: ” Národní Museum” (National Museum), has confirmed her upcoming plan to curate an exhibition in Taiwan in September. As a result of our dedication and efforts on international exchanges in recent years, the VT Artsalon has received attention and recognition from the international art community. As such, VT is truly honored to collaborate with this European first-rate curator in presenting the solo exhibition My Body is a Temple of artistic heavyweight Milena Dopitová and the performance of best-selling musician Peter Wagner.

 

On this occasion, visual artist Dopitová and musician Wagner will have an unprecedented transdisciplinary cooperation. Curated by Pavlína Vogelová, the artist will present her photographic, installation and video artworks, while the musician will involve his music in the visual images to replace the voice of narration, orchestrating an abstract art symphony composed of the outer part (bodily movements, facial expressions, voices) and the inner part (thoughts and soul) of individuals.

 

Milena Dopitová is one of the most internationally recognized contemporary artists in Czech. David Ebony’s article in Art in America has commented Dopitová’s works as “thoughtful and affecting!” She has received several prestigious prizes such as Pollock-Krasner, Tranzit and Michal Ranny in New York and Czech. Her has been invited repeatedly to exhibit her works at the Venice Biennale and in England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Czech, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Brazil, Austria, Sweden, Germany, the United States, France, Italy and Portugal. Her works can be found in the collections of Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, Prague City Gallery, National Gallery in Prague and Bank Austria Art Collection. Apart from being an artist-creator, Dopitová is an art educator par excellence. She used to teach in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague. She currently serves as a department head at the latter institution.

 

Famous manily for his solo performance, Peter Wagner is also a virtuoso on classical music. He has been invited to numerous major music festivals in Czech, Italy, France, Mexico, Israel and Japan. He has also engaged in a long-term cooperation with BBC. The recordings of his music have appeared on the broadcasts, television shows and nearly 40 CDs. Active in the market, this internationally recognized musical talent releases nearly one album per year on a regular basis.

 

The exhibition draws its title from the latest video artwork by Milena Dopitová, corresponding to the Christian cultural concept that the human body is the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells and we are obliged to bring glory to God by manifesting our bodies. Treating this time-honored European interpretation of human body as the point of departure, the artist not only questions her self-existence but also explores the relations and gaps between the individuals and the society. Her works draw an analogy between “I” and an independent site for seeking the meaning of the spirit, and meanwhile adopt implied, unfinished stances to open up the meaning of “I” towards countless metaphors and unexplainable incidents.

Renaissance is an exhibition of audio-visual installations produced in collaboration by the duo of digital artists from the Robert Turner Collective and the electroacoustic jazz music duo INFLUUT. Works of algorithmic abstraction offer a synesthetic immersion, inviting introspection and meditation.

 

Each day presents an event for which the invited artists, scientists or collectives propose an intervention that resonates with the themes of the exhibition. Performances, conferences, installations, and a festival of nights with sound punctuate the Renaissance complex.

 

Transdisciplinary in nature, this exhibition aims to provide a sort of demystification of the general notion of the algorithm. She deals in a sometimes didactic, sometimes playful, sometimes organic way with themes that may still be difficult to access with a positive and inclusive attitude.

Alice Cocéa (née à Sinaia, Roumanie) s'installe en France à l'âge de treize ans

Trois années plus tard, elle suit des cours au Conservatoire d'Art Dramatique.

Elle apparaît dans un premier film en 1917 mais c'est la scène qui ne tarde pas à lui apporter la consécration.

C'est en tant que grande vedette du théâtre parisien qu'elle revient à l'écran en 1930.

Elle tient alors des rôles principaux dans "Mon gosse de père" (1930), "Atout-cœur" (1931), "Delphine" (1931), "Marions-nous" (1931), "Nicole et sa vertu" (1931) et "Le greluchon délicat" (1934).

Ces six productions constituent sa principale contribution au Septième Art.

En effet, elle accorde sa préférence aux planches et le cinéma reste pour elle une activité toute secondaire.

Directrice du théâtre des Ambassadeurs de 1940 à 1944, elle se voit, dès la guerre terminée, reprocher son attitude durant l'Occupation.

Mais cela ne signifie pas la fin de la carrière de l'actrice qui, par après, figurera encore dans bon nombre de pièces.

Dans les années 60, elle fait un bref retour à l'écran en tenant des petits rôles dans deux films.

Before Us Lies Eternerdy / Fraunhofer MEVIS (DE), Media Art Nexus NTU Singapore (SG) by Ars Electronica

The short movie shows different scales of the human body, from digitized microscopic lymphoma tissue examined with the molecular cytogenetic technique Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect abnormal changes in DNA, to 3-D reconstructions of a liver as well as a whole-body MRI. At a simultaneous launch at Ars Electronica’s Festival and Media Art Nexus NTU Singapore, we will talk with Ina Conradi and Mark Chavez in a live video call about how art can contribute not only artistry and a sense of awe to removing barriers for engagement with severe health topics, but also as a transdisciplinary approach to innovation in digital medicine. The movie marks the beginning of the cooperation of Media Art Nexus NTU Singapore and Fraunhofer MEVIS, which will provide techniques, tools, scientific expertise and an educational environment for students from NTU Singapore in Bremen, Germany.

Trans*plant: May the Chlorophyll be with /in you / Quimera Rosa (ES/AR/FR) by Ars Electronica

“Trans*Plant: May the Chlorophyll be with/in you” is a mix-media installation project, that aims to present the work behind the Trans*Plant project, initiated three years ago, it combines biomedical research, performance and speculative fiction. It is a piece based on haptic and hybrid low-technologies, where leftovers from the past and the future get entangled. Videos, written narratives, scientific excerpts, mycorrhiza interacting with the audience, and DIY/DIWO biotechnological materials are part of the elements that establish the connection between the theme and the transdisciplinary and experimental form of this lab installation.

Co-commissioned with LifeSpace Science Art Research Gallery, this exhibition considers the protocols for propagation of genetically modified plants as memorials. The speculative design project fuses biotechnology with botany, and employs University collections and research to re-tell stories of scientific discovery and genetic inheritance.

 

Spirit Molecule I is support by University of Dundee’s Botanic Garden and Science Center, Philadelphia USA.

 

About the Artists

Heather Dewey-Hagborg is a transdisciplinary artist and educator who is interested in art as research and critical practice. Her controversial biopolitical art practice includes the project Stranger Visions in which she created portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material (hair, cigarette butts, chewed up gum) collected in public places.

 

Heather has shown work internationally at events and venues including the World Economic Forum, the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennale, the Van Abbemuseum, Transmediale and PS1 MOMA. Her work is held in public collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the New York Historical Society, among others, and has been widely discussed in the media, from the New York Times and the BBC to Art Forum and Wired.

 

Heather has a PhD in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is an artist fellow at AI Now, and an affiliate of Data & Society.

 

She is also a co-founder and co-curator of REFRESH, an inclusive and politically engaged collaborative platform at the intersection of Art, Science, and Technology.

 

Phillip Andrew Lewis is an artist working in a variety of media including photography, video, objects and sound. His creative research often responds to historical events, psychology, and phenomenology. This work consistently examines duration, perceptual limits and attentive observation. Lewis is actively involved in collaboration with artists and various groups.

 

Phillip has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally. He received a 2012 Creative Capital Grant in Visual Art for his ongoing long-term project entitled SYNONYM. He has also received generous support for his research from the Headlands Center for the Arts, Culture and Animals Foundation, Center for Creative Photography, Foundation for Contemporary Art in New York, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, Midway Contemporary Arts Fund, Tennessee Arts Commission, University of Tennessee, and the Urban Arts Commission. In 2005, Phillip co-founded Medicine Factory, an independent arts organization in downtown Memphis committed to supporting installation-based works. He currently teaches at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.

捷克共和國最重要的博物美術館：Národní Museum國家美術館的策展人Pavlína Vogelová確定於今年九月來台策畫展覽。由於近年來非常廟藝文空間在國際交流上的努力耕耘，成果受到國際藝術圈的關注與肯定，此次榮幸獲得與歐洲國家級美術館策展人的合作機會，於VT展出重量級藝術家Milena Dopitová的個展【My Body is a Temple】以及暢銷音樂家Peter Wagner的表演。

 

Milena Dopitová是捷克境內最受國際認可的當代藝術家之一。Art in America雜誌中由藝評家David Ebony撰寫的文章曾評論Dopitová的創作“深沉而且動人！”她曾獲在紐約、捷克獲得Pollock-Krasner、Tranzit、Michal Ranny等獎項，作品獲邀參加多次威尼斯雙年展，並於英國、愛爾蘭、荷蘭、捷克、芬蘭、波蘭、斯洛伐克、巴西、奧地利、瑞典、德國、美國、法國、義大利、葡萄牙等地展出。她的作品更得到布魯克林美術館、卡內基美術館、布拉格市立藝廊、布拉格國家藝廊、奧地利銀行藝術基金會等機構的典藏。除了藝術創作，Dopitová也是一位優秀的藝術教育者，她曾在皮爾森的西波西米亞藝術學院、布拉格的材料學院任教，目前則受聘於布拉格藝術學院，擔任系主任的職位。

 

Petr Wagner是一位以獨奏聞名的古典音樂家，曾受邀於捷克、義大利、法國、墨西哥、以色列、日本等地的大型藝術節表演。Wagner也長期與BBC合作，錄製的音樂出現在各大廣播、電視節目以及近40張CD裡，目前幾乎每年固定發行一張唱片活耀於市場上，是國際音樂界公認的才子。此次Dopitová與Wagner將難得地在展覽中的跨界合作，在捷克國家美術館策展人的策劃下，藝術家展出攝影、裝置以及錄像作品；音樂家以音樂介入視覺影像，以取代文字敘述的聲音，將那些日常生活中外在於個人的肢體動作、表情、聲音與內在的思想、靈魂共譜成抽象的藝術音調。

Pavlína Vogelová, curator of the most important museum of the Czech Republic¬: ” Národní Museum” (National Museum), has confirmed her upcoming plan to curate an exhibition in Taiwan in September. As a result of our dedication and efforts on international exchanges in recent years, the VT Artsalon has received attention and recognition from the international art community. As such, VT is truly honored to collaborate with this European first-rate curator in presenting the solo exhibition My Body is a Temple of artistic heavyweight Milena Dopitová and the performance of best-selling musician Peter Wagner.

 

On this occasion, visual artist Dopitová and musician Wagner will have an unprecedented transdisciplinary cooperation. Curated by Pavlína Vogelová, the artist will present her photographic, installation and video artworks, while the musician will involve his music in the visual images to replace the voice of narration, orchestrating an abstract art symphony composed of the outer part (bodily movements, facial expressions, voices) and the inner part (thoughts and soul) of individuals.

 

Milena Dopitová is one of the most internationally recognized contemporary artists in Czech. David Ebony’s article in Art in America has commented Dopitová’s works as “thoughtful and affecting!” She has received several prestigious prizes such as Pollock-Krasner, Tranzit and Michal Ranny in New York and Czech. Her has been invited repeatedly to exhibit her works at the Venice Biennale and in England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Czech, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Brazil, Austria, Sweden, Germany, the United States, France, Italy and Portugal. Her works can be found in the collections of Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, Prague City Gallery, National Gallery in Prague and Bank Austria Art Collection. Apart from being an artist-creator, Dopitová is an art educator par excellence. She used to teach in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague. She currently serves as a department head at the latter institution.

 

Famous manily for his solo performance, Peter Wagner is also a virtuoso on classical music. He has been invited to numerous major music festivals in Czech, Italy, France, Mexico, Israel and Japan. He has also engaged in a long-term cooperation with BBC. The recordings of his music have appeared on the broadcasts, television shows and nearly 40 CDs. Active in the market, this internationally recognized musical talent releases nearly one album per year on a regular basis.

 

The exhibition draws its title from the latest video artwork by Milena Dopitová, corresponding to the Christian cultural concept that the human body is the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells and we are obliged to bring glory to God by manifesting our bodies. Treating this time-honored European interpretation of human body as the point of departure, the artist not only questions her self-existence but also explores the relations and gaps between the individuals and the society. Her works draw an analogy between “I” and an independent site for seeking the meaning of the spirit, and meanwhile adopt implied, unfinished stances to open up the meaning of “I” towards countless metaphors and unexplainable incidents.

Detlef F. Sprinz is a Senior Scientist with the Research Domain “Transdisciplinary Concepts & Methods” of PIK -- Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research. He has taught international relations, international and European environmental policy, and social science methodology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI; the Faculty of Economics and Social Science, University of Potsdam, Germany; in the international joint MA program in International Relations of the Free University Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, and the University of Potsdam; as well as in the Master of Public Management and the Master of Global Public Policy programs of the University of Potsdam.

Renaissance is an exhibition of audio-visual installations produced in collaboration by the duo of digital artists from the Robert Turner Collective and the electroacoustic jazz music duo INFLUUT. Works of algorithmic abstraction offer a synesthetic immersion, inviting introspection and meditation.

 

Each day presents an event for which the invited artists, scientists or collectives propose an intervention that resonates with the themes of the exhibition. Performances, conferences, installations, and a festival of nights with sound punctuate the Renaissance complex.

 

Transdisciplinary in nature, this exhibition aims to provide a sort of demystification of the general notion of the algorithm. She deals in a sometimes didactic, sometimes playful, sometimes organic way with themes that may still be difficult to access with a positive and inclusive attitude.

Bioretention Gardens in Detroit by University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability

On May 18, 2016, Garden project partners, community leaders, neighborhood residents, and local students celebrated the transformation of vacant lots to gardens specially designed to capture and soak up the rain and beautify neighborhoods in Detroit Michigan.

 

A University of Michigan Water Center research team collaborated with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD), the Detroit Land Bank Authority (DLBA), and Cody Rouge neighborhood organizations to create an innovative form of green infrastructure (GI) for vacant properties in Detroit.

"She is arrested in the streets of Bucharest, in 1949, just as the communist terror is being unleashed by the gang of Ana Pauker, who was schooled by the NKVD, in Moscow. Ten years into her prisons, Madeleine learns about her mother’s demise, a loss which has a profound effect on her psyche: this event triggers an extraordinary process, as she decides to ‘write’ a book, in French, without pen and paper, something which was denied in communist jails. In order to do this task, she recites every day the paragraphs, which she had composed the previous day, before new chapters are being added. In this way, Madeleine learns by heart a whole book. The personages of her story are a mixed bunch of real and fictitious characters, amongst whom figure her brother Jean-René, also in jail and her husband. Such people are all assigned the role of ‘puppets on a string’, that keep her company during her jail years, hence the title of her imaginary book -‘The Jailed Puppets’.

 

In 1964, after fifteen long years in prison, Madeleine’s first cousin, Helen O’Brien (q.v.) pays the communists a huge ransom for Madeleine and her brother Jean-René to be freed and allowed to leave Romania. Jean-René Cancicov was a distinguished economist who took his doctorate in Paris. The same year both Cancicov siblings take the road of exile, to settle in London, Madeleine is now 60, as she leaves her native Romania, completely destitute, with her life shattered. She spends the last years of her life writing her book, which she memorized in the communist jails and she dies in 1985. Some of her correspondence is to be found in the Library of Princeton University.

 

Madeleine outlived her jail sentence to tell her deeply moving story in the notorious women’s prison at Miercurea Ciuc, in Transylvania, also described by Oana Orlea (q.v.). Sadly, her memoirs were published only posthumously, in France, under the title: ‘Le cachot des marionnettes: quinze ans de prison en Roumanie, 1949-1964’. The publication caused quite a stir in Paris and was reviewed by the prestigious ‘La Quinzaine Litteraire’ being awarded the Prize of Francophone writers. Although awarded posthumously, this literary accolade had vindicated Madeleine Cancicov hope that confining for posterity her prison memoirs may not have been all in vain."
