A Taoist walking Meditation
The simplest way to access transcendent reality is to walk.
Walk no where, with no purpose except to experience the walker in the process of walking .. one foot in front of the other ..
Look at no-thing .. don't become distracted by focusing on anything .. allow your vision to broaden .. and you will see everything .. all of the things you would have missed if your attention had become transfixed on some-thing.
Listen to no-thing .. don't become distracted by all of the sounds around you, but let them pass through you .. and as you do, you will hear things that you never would have before.
The same applies to your senses of feeling, taste, smell .. and the emotions that arise from within you ..
As you place one foot in front of the other, allow yourself to become aware of the whole mechanism of your walking - the pressure of the individual points on the ground, the flexing of the tendons and muscles, the movement of your skin, the way the weight transfers all of the way up your body and down again as you take another step ..
Even deeper results can be obtained by combining the sequence of the "breathing exercise" whilst you walk.
Be aware of the majesty of the inner orchestra responsible for each fluid motion .. and how each movement is part of the breath and each breath part of the beat of the Universal Heart.
Chaos only exists for those who do not understand The Streams of Consciousness that is Life_Be_ing_Life in the Moment of Living.
From blue to yellow. It wasn't blue, of course, but it looked too good to correct it back. And the yellow is pretty accurate.
The public art installation "Transcending" is one of the defining elements of downtown Detroit's public space at Hart Plaza. "Transcending" is the "Michigan Labor Legacy Landmark," and was financed by the UAW, the AFL-CIO, and other labor groups. It's the work of Detroit-area artists David Barr and Sergio de Giusti. The piece makes reference to Martin Luther King's famous phrase "the arc of history bends toward justice."
Behind it is the "One Woodward Plaza," a 28 story tower designed by the World Trade Center architect Minoru Yamasaki (1912-1986). It was completed in 1962, and was Yamasaki's first (and some would say most successful) high-rise structure.
Nestled in the heart of Tokyo, Pierre Gagnaire offers a culinary journey that transcends the ordinary, and this exquisite appetizer is a testament to the restaurant's commitment to excellence. This dish is a visual and gastronomic delight, meticulously crafted to tantalize the senses. The appetizer features perfectly cubed cheese, adding a creamy and slightly tangy element to the dish. Accompanying the cheese are delicate dollops of a smooth, white sauce, which provide a rich and luxurious texture. The vibrant green leaves with striking red veins not only add a pop of color but also bring a fresh, earthy flavor that balances the richness of the other components. The base of the dish is a luscious sauce, likely infused with herbs and spices, creating a harmonious blend of flavors that dance on the palate.
The presentation is nothing short of spectacular, with each element thoughtfully placed to create a visually stunning plate. The intricate design of the appetizer showcases a harmonious blend of colors and textures. The cracker provides a delicate crunch, while the edible flowers and herbs introduce a burst of fresh, aromatic flavors. Each bite is a symphony of taste, with the subtle sweetness of the flowers complementing the savory notes of the herbs. This appetizer not only tantalizes the palate but also captivates the eyes with its natural beauty.
The use of seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients ensures that every element of the dish is at the peak of its freshness. This appetizer exemplifies the artistry and innovation that Pierre Gagnaire is renowned for, making it a must-try for any food enthusiast visiting Tokyo. The combination of high-quality ingredients, expert technique, and creative presentation ensures that this dish is not only a feast for the eyes but also an unforgettable culinary experience. Whether you're a seasoned foodie or a curious traveler, this appetizer is sure to leave a lasting impression and set the stage for an extraordinary dining adventure at Pierre Gagnaire.
My Transcend buddy Kema was in town for the Phish shows, so we managed to link up for the afternoon and put a little wall together. I'm a little burnt and out of ideas at the moment.

This sculpture is named 'Transcending' and was a gift of Detroit's labor unions to commemorate the city's 300th birthday. The sculpture is located at the edge of Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit. I was in Detroit as one of many photographers participating in Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photowalk on August 23, 2008.
This shot was almost entirely processed in Lightroom 2. The only thing done in Photoshop was some additional sharpening and the addition of a small digital frame.
With its source high in the Monadhliath Mountains, 60 miles from the outflow at Findhorn on the Moray Firth, the River Findhorn is one of the longest rivers in Scotland and an attractive haunt of salmon fishers and kayakers, due to a succession of deep pools and fast runs throughout its length. It translates as the White River, which probably refers to its areas of rapid water, as otherwise its flow is black as hell’s waistcoat due to tannin seepage from surrounding heather moors. Nearby scenery is stunning and it is known as the River of Beauty as it cuts through great forests and outcrops of sculptured gneiss and granite, as it twists and turns towards the coast and freedom.
This image was accepted in August 2016 into the juried art show by Karen Divine, Emotion at A Smith Gallery.
Day 181 ~ Love Transcends Species
Cooper adores Curtis. Officially, he is Anna’s bird but Anna doesn’t spend as much time with him and I do or Curtis does. When Curtis’s beard is a little fuzzy, Cooper likes to get under his chin and scratch his head on Daddy’s beard. Sometimes, Cooper even gives Curtis a hug!
There was a time when I thought fear was my natural state and that I would just have to learn to live there. This image is about coming out of that dark place toward something brighter. The path is not yet cleared, and obstacles may lie ahead but there is a sense of determination and hopefulness now.
To create this image I had to face fears of failure, judgement, and loneliness. I almost conceded to failure before I even started because I couldn't find a place I was comfortable enough to even set up my camera. Determined not to fail, I set up despite the discomfort. At times, discomfort waned and I was able to feel free for the moments before the next hiker would walk by, so I'd pause as they passed. Then I realized that at the top of the hill there was an audience the whole time, watching, wondering, maybe even judging. Somehow it didn't matter anymore if people were watching, there was no where for me to hide. Accepting this, I became extremely determined to create what I'd set out to. I couldn't have all those people watch me acting foolish (or what I imagine it must look like from afar) and not actually create something from it. So I posed, danced, flailed, and flapped to the snaps of the shutter until the sun finally set.
Alone in the darkness I packed up my gear wishing I'd had someone to keep me company on my long walk back to my car. I drove home alone. Spent Saturday night alone at my computer. Alone, I edited. I was drawing inspiration from many brave artists (Leah Johnston, Brooke Shaden, Miss Aniela, Maryanne Gobble, and so many others) when I became aware of the fact that we are never truly alone in this world. With this, I became profoundly engulfed by the connection we share as artists, as humans, as spirit.
Thank you brave artists for baring your souls, clearing the path, and lighting the way.
When given roses, I let them dry naturally in vases. This one became my subject today because I am forcing myself to get over my resistance to using flash.
Setting shutter speed for ambient light exposure, aperture for flash reach, and flash settings for flash strength takes a bit of work (not to mention the pinning of a cloth outside my kitchen window amongst my bird feeders), but it is worth it.
Cheers everyone.

Transcending is an arch sculpture and the Michigan Labor Legacy Landmark. It is located west of the entrance to Hart Plaza near the intersection of Woodward Avenue and Jefferson Avenue and was dedicated on August 30, 2003.
In 2000, the Michigan Labor History Society established a project to create a monument that would celebrate Michigan's contributions to the labor movement. Funding was obtained from the United Automobile Workers, AFL–CIO, and other civic and labor organizations. Sculptors were invited to enter a competition and submit sketches of their designs; 120 artists entered the competition. The selection committee chose Transcending, by David Barr from Livonia, Michigan and Sergio de Guisti, an Italian sculptor living in Redford Township, Michigan at the time of the sculptor's selection. The two steel arcs, the work of David Barr, stretch 63 feet (19 m) into the sky and weigh 30 short tons (27 t). Barr saw them as an elegantly stylized gear emerging from the ground. They are not joined and many assume that it is to remind viewers of the unfinished mission of the American labor movement. However, at night, a light project from one of the arcs at its zenith to the other. The sculptors assumed that viewers would focus on that light. To them, this light symbolized the energy of workers.
At the base there are fourteen Vermont granite boulders, each 6 feet (1.8 m) in height. The bas reliefs on the boulders are the work of Sergio de Guisti. They are meant to symbolize the sacrifices and achievements of American workers. There are also more than a dozen plaques commemorating the accomplishments of the American labor movement such as the prohibition of child labor, free public school education and employer paid pensions and health care.
The monument stands close to where Martin Luther King, Jr. first gave his “I Have a Dream” speech on June 20, 1963, a speech that was repeated later that year at the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. One of Dr. King’s phrases - “The arc of history bends toward justice” - is included in the sculpture.

This is the monument to Michigan's Labor Legacy, dedicated August 30, 2003 on Hart Plaza near the Detroit waterfront. The two steel arcs reach a height of 63 feet. The tall building in the background is 150 West Jefferson. I took this photo on January 26, 2018 during the North American International Auto Show at the nearby Cobo Center.

"How to I anchor these experiences and solidify these changes when I leave the forest?" And that brings me full circle back to my art practice and the question of the art object. Every festival does this for me, but every once in a while there is a festival space that goes so far to the core of my being, that it transcends everything I held to be true, and everything changes for me. This year The Ritual did that for me. '' J.S ((( )))
