* This is my first post from Switzerland, not surprising as I have not been to the country since 1981. It was only a short train trip from Colmar to Basel, so it would have been absurd not to visit.
I was impressed with Basel; the Rhine goes through the city, and it has a superb Art Gallery with a fantastic collection of work. This is a shot of the part of the Altstadt (old town) of the city. It was in pristine condition as most of the buildings are seventeenth-century , the Basel authorities clearly do not allow commercial development to spoil the rather austere beauty of the area. At the end of the street, you can see the spires of Basel’s Münster.
I have to say this shot took me a long time to get the exposure right; the contrast in light and shade was difficult to manage. A good day out in Basel, but my word, compared to France, it is incredibly expensive. It’s only about seven miles to the border; I imagine a lot of the city’s residents do their shopping in France.

The first church in the town of Grimstad was built in 1849 on a prominent hill overlooking the harbour. That church was not very large, so it was quickly outgrown by the town. Originally, there was a cemetery surrounding the church, but just like the original church, it quickly filled up and it is no longer used. A new cemetery was opened in Frivoll in 1872 and it has been in use since that time. In 1881, the church building was disassembled and moved to the nearby parish of Nedenes and it was rebuilt to become the Engene Church (in present-day Arendal). A new, much larger church was built in Grimstad and it was consecrated on 7 April 1881.
All that remains of the town. Between 1870- 1880 the population was 100 with 2 stores, a hotel/tavern, a tailor, wagonmaker, 2 carpenters, a cabinetmaker, shoemaker, 2 blacksmiths, a school, 2 churches, 2 sawmills, a quarry, a lime kiln and a brick maker. By 1890 the population stagnated and did not grow.
The post office lasted until 1914 when rural route delivery came to the village. The Methodist church was demolished in 2005, the school is now a home, and Christ Church, built lovingly by the residents in 1874, still has services in the summer. Most of the pioneers are buried here.
Most of the area has reverted back to farmland.
The town hall is the central representative building in the historic town centre. The building, which is set far back, forms the design centre with the Old Market, the peripheral buildings and the brick-faced, red district court. It was built between 1818 and 1821 in the classicist style as a half-timbered building with a balcony. The so-called functional half-timbering was painted a plain grey to give the building a more noble appearance with the appearance of a solid building.
Until the completion of the district court in 1881, court hearings also took place in the town hall. For this purpose, the city set up several heated prison cells on the town hall floor, which can still be seen today. These were still used as holding cells until the 1950s. After structural changes were made to the town hall at certain intervals, the restoration of this building in accordance with the preservation order began in 2004.
After years of decay, one of the oldest and most historic houses on the island was returned to its original use.

This is Elizabethtown or E-Town as they refer to it down here in extreme southern Illinois on the Ohio River. Things don’t change much in these quiet, sleepy little southern river towns. The old buildings and old hand painted signage remind you of a much earlier time. Hollywood should come down here with their cameras and do a retake on To Kill A Mockingbird or some other old southern themed novel. The first time you come rolling down the hill and the town itself unfolds before your eyes, be prepared to be stunned by a strange feeling that you’ve been suddenly transported back into the 1930’s or 40’s. I think I actually gasped, the feeling was so great. Your camera will feel hot within your hand as you are suddenly faced with so many photogenic objects at once to consider. No joke! Coca Cola better get down here while the signage is all still intact. I’ve never seen so much in one small place. Plan a trip and be sure to stay in the old Rose Hotel which is one of the oldest buildings in Illinois and has a magnificent view of the beautiful Ohio River. It doesn’t get any better than this. St Peter and St Paul’s church from a narrow lane in the seaside town of Cromer from an early morning visit to the town.
My favourite town is finally getting a major upgrade along the most neglected and underappreciated areas, Front Street and the waterfront, can hardly wait until its all finished.
