Warsaw's New Town is a neighbourhood dating from the 15th century. It lies just north of the Old Town and is connected to it by ulica Freta (English: Freta Street), which begins at the Barbican. Like the Old Town, the New Town was destroyed by the Nazis during World War II and rebuilt after the war.

The town hall in Gostyń was built in the mid-nineteenth century, and its modern shape was given by the reconstruction in 1910-1912. During World War II, there was a prison in the cellars. In the front wall of the town hall there is a plaque commemorating the victims of the Nazis with the inscription "From here they went to the death ramparts to give us victory, our dear heroes, October 21, 1939".
The three-sloped roof is covered with tiles, and a clock tower rises above the ridge.

Ratusz w Gostyniu powstał w połowie XIX wieku, a współczesny kształt nadała mu przebudowa w latach 1910-1912. Podczas II wojny światowej w piwnicach mieściło się więzienie. We frontowej ścianie ratusza umieszczono tablicę upamiętniającą ofiary hitlerowców z napisem "Stąd wyszli na szaniec śmierci, by nam dać zwycięstwo, bohaterowie nasi najdrożsi 21.X.1939 r."

The neo-Gothic town hall building in Sulechów dates back to the 16th century. It was reconstructed several times and rebuilt (mainly due to fires). Each time his appearance and style were changed, the tower was added.
The most intense changes were made in the second half of 19th century, almost completely obliterating the original stylish features of the building. The last renovation works took place in 2009.

Ostatnie prace remontowe miały miejsce w 2009 roku.
Cascais is a coastal resort town in Portugal, just west of Lisbon. It’s known for its sandy beaches and busy marina. The old town is home to the medieval Nossa Senhora da Luz Fort and the Citadel Palace, a former royal retreat. Nearby is the whitewashed Nossa Senhora da Assunção church, with glazed azulejo tiles. Paula Rego House of Stories shows the Portuguese artist’s paintings in a modern building.

Sticking with my recent home area theme: looking over the Alnwick rooftops from the Summerseats path, just up the hill from our house.

Town Hall - the first building of the fourteenth century, it was probably a wooden structure. During the great fire in 1541, was destroyed and rebuilt in the shape of a two-storey building with two towers. In the nineteenth century it was rebuilt: In 1827, pulled down one of the towers - north. The elevation developed in neostylowych forms referring to the Gothic and Renaissance, tower crowned with crenellations. In the basement are oldest preserved elements - stone and brick barrel vaults: cross-ribbed and starry.

Ratusz – pierwsza budowla z XIV wieku, była to budowla zapewne drewniana. W czasie wielkiego pożaru miasta w 1541 r. uległ zniszczeniu, odbudowany w kształcie budynku dwukondygnacyjnego z dwiema wieżami. W XIX wieku został przebudowywany: W 1827 r. rozebrano jedną z wież – północną. Elewację opracowano w neostylowych formach nawiązujących do gotyku i renesansu, wieżę zwieńczono krenelażem. W piwnicach zachowały się najstarsze elementy – kamienne sklepienia beczkowe oraz ceglane: krzyżowo-żebrowe i gwiaździste.

Shot at F11 or F16. The town of Dunstable (Bedfordshire, UK) does have a longer history, but in its street layout it is of medieval origin and grew around the large 12th century Augustinian monastery of which the Priory Church St. Peter is the main survivor. There is also the 15th century gateway leading into what were the grounds of the monastery (now a park).

A retirement apartment, two minutes walk from the town centre with fishing - appealing for many.
Fishing is one of the greatest hobbies practised religiously since ancient times. Some call it a sport while others consider it the art of life. Though this began as a means of survival for many.

“Tallinn, Estonia’s capital on the Baltic Sea, is the country’s cultural hub. It retains its walled, cobblestoned Old Town, home to cafes and shops, as well as Kiek in de Kök, a 15th-century defensive tower. Its Gothic Town Hall, built in the 13th century and with a 64m-high tower, sits in historic Tallinn’s main square. St. Nicholas Church is a 13th-century landmark exhibiting ecclesiastical art.”
We loved our short visit to Tallinn, and visited the sights mentioned above.

The Old Town section of Warsaw was completely leveled and destroyed during WWII. After liberation, the Polish people rebuilt this area from the rubble to look exactly as it once stood.
* This is my first post from Switzerland, not surprising as I have not been to the country since 1981. It was only a short train trip from Colmar to Basel, so it would have been absurd not to visit.
I was impressed with Basel; the Rhine goes through the city, and it has a superb Art Gallery with a fantastic collection of work. This is a shot of the part of the Altstadt (old town) of the city. It was in pristine condition as most of the buildings are seventeenth-century , the Basel authorities clearly do not allow commercial development to spoil the rather austere beauty of the area. At the end of the street, you can see the spires of Basel’s Münster.
I have to say this shot took me a long time to get the exposure right; the contrast in light and shade was difficult to manage. A good day out in Basel, but my word, compared to France, it is incredibly expensive. It’s only about seven miles to the border; I imagine a lot of the city’s residents do their shopping in France.
