Grace O'Malley's Castle, Kildavnet, Mayo Co, Ireland

The Tower at Kildavnet, in the south-east corner of Achill Island, is a perfect example of a 15th century Irish tower house. The Gaelic Chiefs of the time copied a Norman design and constructed many such tower houses. The tower at Kildavnet is thought to have been constructed by the Clan O’Malley in about 1429, but is associated locally with a descendant of the original builders, Grace O’Malley or Granuaile. This legendary pirate queen is thought to have been born around 1530 and died in about 1603. The Tower at Kildavnet is one of a series of such strongholds that Granuaile established along the western seaboard (she is said to be buried in a similar tower on Clare Island) as she dominated the waters during the 16th century.

Located in the northeastern part of Yellowstone near Tower Junction, the fall plunges a stunning 132 feet. The unusual rock columns north of the fall were created by lava flow the cracked as it cooled. And interestingly enough, up until 1986, visitors could see a large boulder perched on the edge of where the fall drops. It fell victim to gravity in June 1986. You can hike down to see the river, but access to the falls from the bottom is not possible. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, May 2025

Devils Tower (also known as Bear Lodge) is a butte, possibly laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet (264 m) from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,558 m) above sea level. (9/28/2024)

I went up to Scrabo Tower tonight with the intention of capturing a few star trails. But the cold wind blowing at the top of the hill soon put stop to that idea.

Had to snag this one at night. didn't get much time to hit it up.

WW II era watch towers along the east coast of the US.

The tower is 560 feet (170 metres) high, and was opened in 2005. It has three observation decks just above 100 metres (the three sections enclosed in glass).

It has been sponsored in the past by Emirates Airlines, and more recently Macmillan Cancer Support.

On the lowest deck, there is a short walkway made of glass, so you can walk in the air above seemingly nothing.

I went through a phase of being addicted to tower defence games, and these sprinklers remind me of them so much. Pew pew pew!

The Chindia Tower (Turnul Chindiei) is a tower in the Royal Court (Curtea Domnească) monuments ensemble in Târgovişte, Romania, built in the 15th century. The tower was begun during the second reign of Prince Vlad III the Impaler over Wallachia, taking its final form during the 19th century. It initially had a military purpose, but during history it has been used as a guard point, a fire spotter and for storing and protecting the state treasury. Between 1847 and 1851, the Chindia Tower was completely restored by Gheorghe Bibescu, who added 5 metres (16 ft) to its height. The building in its current form has a height of 27 metres (89 ft) and a diameter of 9 metres (30 ft). (Wikipedia)

O tower of light, sad beauty

that magnified necklaces and statues in the sea,

calcareous eye, insignia of the vast waters, cry

of the mourning petrel, tooth of the sea, wife

of the Oceanian wind, O separate rose

from the long stem of the trampled bush

that the depths, converted into archipelago,

O natural star, green diadem,

alone in your lonesome dynasty,

still unattainable, elusive, desolate

like one drop, like one grape, like the sea.

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and has become an iconic symbol of London, resulting in it sometimes being confused with London Bridge, situated some 0.5 mi (0.80 km) upstream. Tower Bridge is one of five London bridges now owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation.

This industrial tower from the old L.W. Smith Building in Launceston's old wharf district, is something to behold. Standing 30 metres high and made entirely from red bricks it has been standing for nearly 100 years.

I have long been fascinated by Bill Brandt's industrial images from the 1930s and 40s. They are perfect black and whites, and often very dark. Here, despite the overcast sky, the light is still a real presence in those clouds. I've left the powerlines in there so as not to make the image too pretty.

This is a shot of the world famous Tower Bridge in London. It was taken from a tripod mounted on a railing on the river front.

I took this shot after me and my partner had gone on a long walk together around the river. This was shot before the golden hour. At some point I will be going back to get some shots whilst the bridge is lit up.

This looks much better in large press L to view it the way it was intended to be viewed.

The smaller of the two towers on Ynys llanddrwyn.

A smaller, conical tower, with a domed top, is located to the south-east, and may be an earlier structure. The walls are 6 feet 8 inches (2.03 m) in radius and 3 feet (0.91 m) thick, with a door to the north-west, and show signs of cracking to the rubble-filled walls on the west.

One of London's most recognisable sights, familiar from dozens of movies. Its Neo-Gothic towers and sky-blue suspension struts add extraordinary elegance to what is a supremely functional structure. London was a thriving port in 1894 when it was built as a much-needed crossing point in the east, equipped with a then-revolutionary stream-driven bascule mechanism that could raise the roadway to make way for oncoming ships in just three minutes!

This wonderful WW1 memorial clock tower is in Ulverstone Tasmania. The three pillars represent the armed forces - army, navy and airforce - linked together with the chains built over the original WW1 memorial. It looks great during the day, but at night it is quite special.

Our lives and all that lovin' means

Broadway Tower is a folly on Broadway Hill, near the village of Broadway, in the English county of Worcestershire, at the second-highest point of the Cotswolds (after Cleeve Hill). Broadway Tower's base is 1,024 feet (312 metres) above sea level. The tower itself stands 65 feet (20 metres) high.

The "Saxon" tower was the brainchild of Capability Brown and designed by James Wyatt in 1794, in the form of a castle, and built for Lady Coventry in 1798-99. The tower was built on a "beacon" hill, where beacons were lit on special occasions. Lady Coventry wondered whether a beacon on this hill could be seen from her house in Worcester — about 22 miles (35 km) away — and sponsored the construction of the folly to find out. Indeed, the beacon could be seen clearly.

Over the years, the tower was home to the printing press of Sir Thomas Phillipps, and served as a country retreat for artists including William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones who rented it together in the 1880s. William Morris was so inspired by Broadway Tower and other ancient buildings that he founded the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in 1877.

Today, the tower is a tourist attraction and the centre of a country park with various exhibitions open to the public at a fee, as well as a gift shop and restaurant. The place is on the Cotswold Way and can be reached by following the Cotswold Way from the A44 road at Fish Hill, or by a steep climb out of Broadway village.

Near the tower is a memorial to the crew of an A.W.38 Whitley bomber that crashed there during a training mission in June 1943.

In the late 1950s, Broadway Tower monitored nuclear fallout in England; an underground ROC Corps bunker was built 50 yards from the Tower. Manned continuously from 1961 and designated as a master post, the bunker was one of the last such Cold War bunkers constructed and, although officially stood down in 1991, the bunker is now one of the few remaining fully equipped facilities in England.
