Upcycled.
This top was made using parts of three original garments:
a) a big and loose indian multicolor dress donated by my aunt and whose top had been later torn in the back (by Amelia, our cat!) I've made an A-line skirt with the bottom part of the dress (I'll upload it later).
b) a green eddie bauer cotton knit top, 3/4 sleeve, donated by a former neighbor.
c) a green thrifted vest that was too tight and I deconstructed to upcycle.
This is what I came up with.!

Quilt for my eldest son - orders were red and black only but snuck a teeny bit of green in there and luckily he likes it. Pieced by machine with a mixture of conventional and liberated piecing. Now to decide how to quilt it?
"In 1858, Francis Cook contracted James Knowels Jr. to design the pavilion that he wanted to build in Monserrate. The architect found that he was restricted in various ways however, since he had to work with the existing structures of DeVisme’s old small Neo-Gothic Castle.
But the construction followed Knowels’ plan and the building proved to be original and highly eclectic. The three bodies of the pavilion – topped by bulbous red cupolas - have facades opened by doors and windows of soft Gothic curves. Preceding the entrance is an equally Neo-Gothic portico with a cincture of large entablatures. In the cornice are alternate modillions of trilobite spirals and arches, and emerging from the central body is a balcony with arches ornamented with decorative tiles imitating the mudejar style, which overlooks a leafy park. Inside the palace, the exuberant decoration of the plaster and domes accentuates the oriental style of the pavilion, particularly in the gallery and the “Music Room”, where a profusion of Indian and classical themes permeates the ensemble with its own dynamic, creating a unique aesthetic effect. The superb gardens around the royal building were designed and created by Stockdale and Thomas Gargill, who used the micro-climate of the mountain to create a magnificent park where more than three thousand exotic species can still be seen today."
This top was made from the front of some worn out linen trousers (the upper part) and the an old linen/silk shirt belonging to my other half.
I spent hours considering this media project and if giving it a go made any sense. While I'm not a #dmp student, I've been lucky enough to see some of their work. Rather than wondering, for better or worse, this is my attempt at completing @davidsilver's class project.
The choice of stairs, and specifically the library stairs, began with an off-hand comment someone made when they saw another photo of the same stairwell... The comment was something like "if you've seen photos of the library stairs before, they all kinda look the same." Well, I wondered about this. If the stairs should look familiar to anyone, its me - I've been up and down this particular set (42 steps total) thousands of times since 1995 when I started at USF as an undergraduate. Between my time here as a student and now as a member of the faculty at Gleeson Library, I've been on campus for more than 10 years. Yikes.
What pushed me over the edge in selecting stairs was a website all about stairs. My guess, if a bunch of folks all over the globe could find inspiration and beauty in stairs, well, I'd try too.
This first photo is of the top rail, on the 3rd floor landing. I chose this as the anchor for the set because its an angle I had never seen photographed. Other things I like is the focus on a few tiny welds. While I'm sure they don't hold up the railing, the welds were made by someone, speaking to the craft of building things by hand. The orange is also important - the day I took this photo was the same day as the SF Giants were playing the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS (game 3 in SF). And well, I just like orange. The blurry bits are just how my camera decided to focus this shot - the image was not retouched in any way.
